- Mario Subacchi obituary
My father, Mario Subacchi, a gregarious man and a great raconteur, was a prominent member of the Italian immigrant community in Wales. As a restaurateur in his father-in-law Joe Chiappa's business in Aberystwyth town centre, Mario, who has died aged 88, served fish and chips to several generations of students at the University of Wales, as well as customers from the local area, where he was a hugely popular personality.Born in Bardi, in the province of Parma, Mario was educated at Cremona, where he learned the art of woodcarving. A member of the crack 8th Bersaglieri regiment of the Italian army during the second world war, he was wounded in action in the battles of Tobruk and El Alamein before being captured by the British Eighth Army. When hostilities with Italy ceased, he enlisted in the Pioneer Corps of the British army and continued his war service in Libya and Egypt. He returned briefly to his home town, finding it devastated by the effects of war, and his elder brother, a cleric who had been awaiting ordination to the priesthood, murdered by the retreating Nazi forces. Mario emigrated to Britain, settling with his uncle and aunt's family in Aberystwyth, where he was to remain for the rest of his life.In the late 40s and early 50s, he was a talented centre-forward for various local football teams, including Aberystwyth Town. He and his wife Joan, whom he married in 1953, were both stalwarts of the Roman Catholic church in the town.Following his retirement 23 years ago, Mario returned to woodcarving. He was a highly talented engraver and sculptor in wood, with a prodigious output, ranging from Welsh dragons to horses, chess sets, jewellery boxes and elaborate picture frames. In addition, he gave freely of his time to teach woodcarving skills to patients at the Gorwel
- Before the Revolution – review
The 22-year-old Bertolucci made an impressive debut in 1962 with The Grim Reaper, a Rashomon-style thriller about the murder of a prostitute scripted by his mentor, Pier Paolo Pasolini. But it was his second film, Before the Revolution (1964), now rereleased to accompany a well-deserved retrospective at London's BFI Southbank, that made his name. Semi-autobiographical, partly inspired by Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma, and set in 1962 in his native Parma, the film is deeply indebted to the French new wave and centres on Fabrizio, a 20-year-old introspective haut bourgeois student both attracted to and repelled by middle-class conformity and revolutionary Marxism. He has an incestuous affair with his attractive young aunt (a recurrent theme in Bertolucci's work), and it is altogether a dazzling film, both continually vital and something of a time capsule. I think, however, that his best movies are The Conformist, The Spider's Stratagem, the first part of 1900, and, with reservations, his version of one of my favourite novels, Paul Bowles's The Sheltering Sky.Bernardo BertolucciDramaRomanceWorld cinemaItalyPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Measuring risk: As the dust settles | Editorial
We remain in a state of confusion over the threat posed by volcanic ashHas aviation been grounded and tourism tripped up just as the holiday season is starting by European bureaucrats whose governing principle is to ban anything even remotely risky in case they should get blamed later on? Has the nanny state, in other words, been responsible for the fact that your nan has been stuck in Las Palmas? With an end to the ban in prospect because the eruption is subsiding, this is what some airline executives and a number of grumpy commentators have come close to saying. The truth lies elsewhere, and, while it does not reflect that well on governments here or on the aviation industry, this has not been a simple case of overreaction. We remain in a state of confusion over the threat posed by volcanic ash because the basic scientific and technical work needed to measure it more accurately has not yet been done. It has not been done in part because it has not been funded, and in part because competing scientific projects have taken precedence. There is as a result considerable uncertainty on the two fundamental questions of how to gauge more exactly the amount of volcanic material in the atmosphere, and, having gauged it, how to decide what amount aircraft can cope with and what presents a serious danger. That danger was first dramatised in 1982 when a British Airways 747 lost its engines flying over Indonesia during an eruption. Over the years since, an international institutional framework for early warning of volcanic events has been put in place, but progress on the satellite instrumentation needed for accurate measurement of volcanic clouds and on the testing of jet engines to see what levels they can tolerate has not been so rapid. It is perhaps symptomatic that Dr Fred Prata
- Ana Timberlake obituary
Our mother, Ana Timberlake, who has died aged 66 of the lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, was one of those rare women who proved that you can have it all. A successful businesswoman and loving mother of three, Ana was the founder of Timberlake Consultants Limited (TCL), a statistical consultancy firm, with particular applications in medical research and econometric modelling.Ana was born in Portugal, the daughter of a civil engineer. Her father, Armando da Palma Carlos, was at that time the resident engineer on the Pego do Altar dam construction site, Alentejo, where Ana spent her early childhood. Her family were no strangers to successful women. Her aunt, Elina Guimarães (whose husband, Adelino da Palma Carlos, was appointed prime minister following the 1974 revolution) was head of the National Council of Portuguese women and is considered to have been the first feminist in Portugal.Ana took her first degree, in mathematics, at Lisbon University, before coming to Britain in 1969 to do a master's degree in statistics and operational research at Southampton University. She then took up employment at PTRC (Planning and Transport Research and Computation), a small research unit in London. An early assignment at PTRC was to re-analyse the results of Robert Borkenstein's 1964 Grand Rapids study, upon which the British breathalyser test had been based in the mid-1960s. The original data had not been statistically adjusted and earlier analysis had suggested that driving improved with the intake of a small amount of alcohol. However, after Ana had standardised the data (for weather, vehicle age, driving experience, and so on), it became clear (much to the chagrin of the brewers) that alcohol intake did indeed make driving capability progressively worse. At PTRC, Ana com 特発性肺線維症66肺疾患の高齢者が死亡した私たちの母親、アナティンバーレイク、1人は、あなたがすべてあることを証明これらの貴重な女性だった
