- Sandra Bullock is highest paid female actor after $56m year
Oscar-winning star of The Blind Side out-earns rivals such as Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston, according to Forbes magazine listSandra Bullock has been named the highest paid female actor in the world after earning a mighty $56m (£35m) over the past 12 months.Bullock, who won the best actress Oscar in March for her role in drama The Blind Side, beat Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker to the top spot, according to Forbes magazine. Most of her money came from two films – the aforementioned The Blind Side, which took $310m across the globe on a budget of just $30m, and comedy The Proposal, which managed a haul of $320m from $40m. Bullock benefited hugely from the success of both movies, says Forbes, because in each case she had struck deals to take a profit share on top of her acting fee.Tied for second place on the list were Witherspoon and Diaz, with estimated hauls of $32m each. The former banked paychecks for upcoming films How Do You Know and Water For Elephants, while the latter received payment for her part in action comedy Knight and Day, opposite Tom Cruise, and the final Shrek film.Aniston, who last year topped the Forbes list along with Angelina Jolie, could only manage fourth spot this time around. She made an estimated $27m between June 2009 and June 2010. Jessica Parker rounded out the top five with $25m.In compiling its list, Forbes spoke to talent agents, managers, producers and lawyers, and took into account revenue from sales of perfume, clothing lines and advertising campaigns.Despite her Oscar win and topping the Forbes list, it has not been a perfect year for Bullock. - Toy Story 3 shows family films are the grown-ups of cinema | David Cox
Family films are succeeding because they deliver the warmth, wit and wisdom that other genres lackAfter what looked like being a bleak year in the cinemas, a generally acknowledged masterpiece has finally stormed our screens. In Toy Story 3, we at last have a film that's knocking dead both audiences and critics. Or perhaps not quite at last. Shrek Forever After did much the same kind of job. The performance of these two wasn't unexpected; nonetheless, other much-anticipated films have disappointed. Inception was baffling and Eclipse was vomit-inducing. Sex and the City 2 was a letdown. Even Woody Allen's long-awaited return to form failed to materialise.Look back over the year to date and a bit of a theme can be detected. The likes of Prince of Persia, The Wolfman, Clash of the Titans, Hot Tub Time Machine, The Bounty Hunter and Shutter Island made less of a splash than you might have thought they would. Punching above their expected weight were Alice in Wonderland, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang and How to Train Your Dragon. It's family films that seem to be doing the biz. This may become more obvious should The Karate Kid, The Last Airbender, Despicable Me and, one of the year's biggest surprises, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, do as well here as they have across the pond. Perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised by all this. Look back at last year's score sheet. Obviously Avatar ruled the roost, but the runners-up at the box office were Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ice Age 3 and Up, not The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen or The Hangover.Such indicia fly in the face of conventional wisdom. We've been led to believe the cinemas are in thrall to explosion-addicted teenage fanboys and their romance-besot 彼らは暖かさを、機知と知恵がどのような荒涼とした今年、映画館、一般的に認められた傑作にいるように見えた他のジャンルのlackAfterは最終的に私たちのスクリーンを席巻した配信のための家族の映画が成功している
- In praise of … Christopher Nolan | Editorial
Much like Tim Burton, he has showed his ability to break out from well-defined parametersDeja vu? Of course you have, but that is the whole point of a summer season monopolised by sequels and franchise cinema. To go the box office today is to see old favourites dressed up as new: Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, The Karate Kid (remake), Predators (remake). Not so much variations on a theme as electronic music on a loop. If for no other reason, Christopher Nolan's Inception is worthy of note, a high-octane blockbuster which is both original and thought-provoking. Nolan is no stranger to sequels and remakes. Insomnia was a remake of a Norwegian film of the same name, and of course there was Batman Begins. But much like Tim Burton, Nolan showed his ability to break out from well-defined parameters. Nolan's Batman series are not simply comic-book films. Stylistically, they have more in common with Heat and The Usual Suspects than they do with Spider-Man or Iron Man. Nolan has been likened to Stanley Kubrick, only to be knocked back as forced and elephantine. Both the accolades and the brickbats miss the point. In Memento, he toys with the complexities of a thriller shot backwards. In Inception he places a sci-fi heist inside the moving contours of a dreaming mind. The visuals, like the streets of Paris folding in on themselves, fights in zero gravity, or sending a train ploughing through a busy street, are dizzying. But the best moments are human ones, when one character panics with the realisation she could be in the dream of another. Nolan is emerging as a master storyteller.Christopher Nolanguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
