My friend Gordon Strachan, who has died aged 76, was a maverick theologian, a Church of Scotland minister who loved to turn ideas inside out and challenge orthodox assumptions. His studies led him from history at Oxford to theology at New College, Edinburgh, where he did his PhD on Edward Irving, a 19th-century Scottish divine denounced as a heretic.In between research, Gordon was active in the Iona Community, spending summers helping rebuild the ruined medieval abbey on Iona in the Inner Hebrides. He became a minister in Dalmarnock in the East End of Glasgow, engaging his parishioners in the kind of inspiring activities integral to his character.Gordon had a wicked sense of humour and occasion. No one who was there will ever forget him dressed as Merlin at the pageant organised in celebration of the launch of his book The Return of Merlin (2006), when friends became a vast cast of characters from the Arthurian legends, with Gordon's son Christopher and friends as the knights of the Round Table.Tall and striking in looks, Gordon was a pied piper figure, particularly for the many students he taught in 25 years of tutoring Edinburgh University's Lifelong Learning courses. He led groups on Merlin quests to Glastonbury; Ruskin walks, imbued with nature poetry; and pilgrimages to Chartres, to explore links between architecture and sacred geometry.He came into his own when he met his wife, Elspeth, in the early 1970s across a crowded New College library. They went on to run the Netherbow Arts Centre in Edinburgh for six years, establishing a crucible of creativity involving artists, poets, musicians, ecologists and feminists. Originally published on 1 February 1983The driving habits of a life-time were changed overnight for more than half the motorists in the country yesterday as they bowed to the inevitable and started wearing seat belts.Over the country more than 90 per cent of drivers and passengers were wearing belts compared with about 40 per cent before it became compulsory.Surveys by the Automobile Association showed Teesside drivers topped the league, with 97 per cent wearing belts. Cardiff and Edinburgh were at the other extreme with only 64 and 65 per cent. Other towns surveyed fell mostly near the top of the two extremes. Bournemouth and Cove。。try, 96 per cent; Merseyside, 95; Grea。。er Manchester, 93; Glasgow, Inverness, Nottingham and Newcastle, 92; Leeds and Truro, 90; London, 86.Most of the potential offenders blamed absent-mindedness rather than defiance when questioned, and at a service station many of the people driving off after filling up had forgotten to put on their belts again.The delivery driver loophole in the new law was manifest in town centre traffic. Eliminating vehicles like milk floats and vans obviously carrying out very local deliveries, who are exempt, it appeared that something like 35 per cent of van drivers who should have been belted were not, including a van loaded with building materials, immediately behind a police patrol car.The unbelted driver and passenger of a hearse seen heading for the Golders Green Crematorium may have been counting on the defence that they were involved in the collection and delivery business too. The survey found that Luanda is three times as costly as Karachi. From the survey, London (rank 17) is the UK's most expensive city, followed by Aberdeen (149), Glasgow (155), and Birmingham (158). Belfast (182) is ranked as the UK's least expensive city. The survey covers 214 cities across five continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. New York is used as the base city for the index and all cities are compared against New York. With no clear winner, the people's verdict is a plague on the old politics. Now is the time for real reform of our broken systemSo now the real fight begins. If, as seems almost certain, we are to have a hung parliament, the UK's locked-down politics has suddenly been flung wide open. For the first time in living memory, we have a chance to smash our antediluvian system. If we can seize the opportunity a hung parliament offers, to deliver proportional representation and party-funding reform, we will change politics in the UK for ever.Now we have the chance to be counted: metaphorically and literally. Our votes need never be wasted again.But it won't happen by itself: nothing ever does. We will change this system despite most of the men and women who have just taken seats at Westminster, not because of them. Radical constitutional reform will happen only if we demand it, so loudly and so doggedly that parliament and government, whatever their composition might be, can no longer fend us off.The fight starts tomorrow, with rallies in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, Middlesborough, Oxford and possibly other cities. It is being coordinated by the kind of wide-ranging coalition we've needed for years, as almost all the major reform campaigns – Power2010, Make Votes Count, Unlock Democracy, the Electoral Reform Society, Ekklesia, Compass, Hang 'em, Vote for a Change and others – have settled their differences and come together. (The only name missing from the list is 38 Degrees, which appears to have decided that its real enemies are other democracy campaigns.) Why is it that so many Islamic terrorists have studied engineering?Whatever else Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is – privileged young Nigerian, pious introvert and all the other details in those journey-to-jihad profiles – he is also a graduate in mechanical engineering from University College London. That slots the Detroit plane bomber into a gruesome tradition: Islamist terrorists who trained as engineers.There are plenty more. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Mohamed Atta, 9/11 mastermind and ringleader respectively: both engineers. Imam Samudra, plotter of the Bali nightclub bombings: an engineer. Kafeel Ahmed, who tried to bomb Glasgow Airport in 2007: an MPhil in aeronautical engineering from Belfast.That link is more than coincidental. Analysing data on 284 jihadis from across the Muslim world, Diego Gambetta and Steffen Hertog found that 69% had been to university – which, if borne out generally, suggests al-Qaida is better educated than the British workforce. And 44% went into engineering, with Islamic studies a distant second at 19%. Put another way, engineers in Muslim countries were between three and four times more likely to become violent extremists than other graduates.Why? It's not just a case of being handy with explosives – sadly, terrorist bombs are relatively easy to make. And it isn't simply because engineering is a very popular degree in developing countries – nearly 60% of graduate Islamic radicals in the west are also engineers. The link has something to do with economics. A good student in Cairo, say, might expect to go on to a well-paid job – yet graduate employment across the Middle East is hard to find. Frustrated ambition is often a catalyst for radicalisation – just ask Jean-Paul Marat.
