    • The continuing disgrace of John McCain | Michael Tomasky
The vote tally on the Start treaty is now posted. Twelve count 'em 12 Republicans voted for it, and in the spirit of the season, let's give them propers: Lamar Alexander, Tennessee; Robert Bennett, Utah; Scott Brown, Massachusetts; Thad Cochran, Mississippi; Susan Collins, Maine; Bob Corker, Tennessee; Johnny Isakson, Georgia; Mike Johanns, Nebraska (interesting, the only one surprising to me; helps give Ben Nelson cover in 2012, no?); Dick Lugar, Indiana; Lisa Murkowski, Alaska; Olympia Snowe, Maine; George Voinovich, Ohio. Kind of amazing. All Democrats voted for. Even Ron Wyden made it back from prostate surgery.Missing from the list? A certain McCain fellow. He really has now just degenerated completely into being a hack. Who can possibly take the man seriously anymore? You just know he's lying through his teeth when he ladles that praise on Sarah Palin. And as for Start, it's exactly the kind of thing he used to be in the Senate to help put his stamp on.In truth, McCain has always had a reputation for standing on the sidelines, throwing stink bombs, then sweeping in at the end to gobble up credit. Except on campaign finance and a couple other things on which he genuinely did do the work. But now he's just a complete joke. I can understand if you're a conservative you'd have preferred him as president. But for the rest of us...God forbid. Meanwhile, this session of Congress...geez. Obama could lose an election tomorrow and still be one of the most active and successful presidents of the modern era. Things are going to get pretty tough again next March, when he and the Republicans start fighting over the budget, but for now, enough complaining, liberals!US CongressJohn McCainMichael Tomaskyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content [スタート]条約の投票の集計は、現在掲載されています

    • The Malcolm X Republicans | Michael Tomasky
The political scientist Jonathan Bernstein, writing at the New Republic site last week, made a point about the Senate and Supreme Court nominations that hadn't occurred to me and caught me in my tracks:Meanwhile, the real question here is what will happen in 2011-2012. As I said, five Republican Senators -- Collins, Graham, Lugar, Snowe, and the retiring Judd Gregg -- defected [voting for Elena Kagan]; Ben Nelson also defected [voting against], but said he would vote for cloture. The obvious question is: what would have happened if there were only 52 or 53 Democrats in the Senate, or for that matter 48 or 49. Elena Kagan appears, by all accounts, to be a mainstream Democratic nominee; she certainly wasn't on the short list of liberal advocates, although she was broadly acceptable to most of them. Can any Obama nominee be confirmed to the Supreme Court next year? The problem here is that compromise is almost impossible to imagine over the Court. Does anyone believe that Thune, DeMint, and the other Senators who may be running for president next year could accept any nominee from Barack Obama? And, after Bob Bennett and the rest of the primaries this year, does anyone believe that more than a handful of Republicans will stand up to the threat of a primary?I don't really expect a full-blown train wreck over the budget, or over any must-pass legislation next year, no matter how well the GOP does in November. But if there's a Supreme Court opening, and if the Democrats hold fewer than, say, 55 seats in the Senate, I think the odds of a real train wreck, a total stalemate, have to be well over 50/50. And, again, if the Democrats fall below 55 Senators, I'll be surprised if the Senate manages to confirm very many Appeals Court nominees. In other words, imagine, say, the cancer- 政治学者ジョナサンバーンスタイン、ニューヨーク共和国のサイトで先週の書き込み、上院と最高裁の指名について、私に発生していなかったと私のトラックで私を捕まえポイント:した一方で、本当の問題はここで何が起こるでしょう2011年から2012年

    • Missing US balloonists' bodies found
Remains of Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rhymer Davis discovered in Puglia by Italian fishing boatAn Italian fishing boat has discovered the bodies of two American adventurers missing since their balloon disappeared over the Adriatic in September during a race that began in the UK.The boat hauled in a balloon gondola off the coast of Vieste in southern Puglia this morning, said a local port official, Guido Limongelli. Inside was two bodies and documents confirming them as Richard Abruzzo, 47, and Carol Rymer Davis, 65.The pair had taken off from Bristol to take part in the 54th annual Gordon Bennett gas balloon race, in which competitors attempt to fly as far as possible from the UK city. They lost contact with their support team on 29 September during thunderstorms over the Adriatic.Rescuers spent a week looking for the pair before concluding that their balloon had most likely hit the water at 50mph and were unlikely to have survived. When the fisherman realised what was in the trawler's net they alerted port officials in Vieste, who sent a patrol boat to escort the vessel back to port, Limongelli said.A coroner was performing an autopsy and officials were investigating to determine what might have caused the balloon to crash.Abruzzo and Davis were described as very experienced fliers, who won the 2004 Gordon Bennett event, the world's oldest balloon race. Richard Abruzzo was the son of Ben Abruzzo, who was in 1981 part of the first team to cross the Pacific Ocean by balloon.Competitors in the race set off from Bristol on 26 September, with most teams getting no further than the south coast of France. • 9:00 pm thoughts, mine and yours | Michael Tomasky
I'm updating columns for editions of the print paper, but I thought I should check in with my regular crowd and see what you think. We appear to be headed toward around 50 in the House and seven or eight in the Senate. I guess it could be more. Hard to say yet. Watch Kentucky-6, Democrat Ben Chandler's district. Neck-and-neck, wasn't supposed to be. If the Republican challenger prevails there, it could mean a few more pick ups. It looks like the R's beat Rick Boucher in Virginia, and that's one the D's were counting on holding. In Florida, Republican Daniel Webster has clobbered Democratic incumbent Alan Grayson. Clobbered. This is one liberals need to pay attention to. Here's a guy the liberal blogosphere limned as a hero, and he got his clock cleaned. The exit polls had Reid-Angle neck-and-neck, at 47 apiece (there's a third candidate in the race, on the right). Also Illinois is reportedly neck-and-neck. In Colorado, Democrat Michael Bennet was a couple of points ahead of Ken Buck. If those flip toward the D's, it's not a bad night in the Senate at all, with loses as few as five. Joe Manchin already won in West Virginia. But five is unlikely. Seven, like I said. It's way too early to know a lot of things, but it's not too early to know one thing. Speaker Boehner. Probably the functional end of Nancy Pelosi's career. I guess that's two things, even if they amount to the same thing.Sound off.US midterm elections 2010Michael Tomaskyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds 私は、印刷用紙の各エディションの列を更新するんだけど、私は私の定期的な群衆に確認してください、あなたがthink.We上院で下院で約50 7または8に向かって進むように表示されるかを参照してくださいと思った

    • Michael Tomasky: Pennsylvania Senate, and the question of analogies
Pennsylvania Democrats will vote next Tuesday in a crucial Senate primary between Arlen Specter, the Republican-turned-Democrat who's trying to hold on to his incumbency, and Joe Sestak, the House member and Navy veteran challenging him. The winner will face GOPer Pat Toomey, a pretty hard-right anti-tax candidate.TPM has a good summary of the state of play here. Basically, some polls just came out showing that Sestak might be ahead. Other polls looking toward the general show that Sestak has at least basically caught up with Specter against Toomey, though both trail him by a few points.Sestak released an ad that you can watch here about Specter's party switch. If seeing George W. Bush again makes you want to drink strychnine, it's pretty devastating. Specter couldn't possibly look more oleaginous. This ad will be shown to budding future politics as a reminder that in this day and age they need to watch every word they say and watch how they say it.If Sestak wins, the media will draw instant parallels with what just happened to Bob Bennett in Utah, on the mere basis that it's another incumbent being tossed out by moblike angry primary voters. It's a pretty superficial comparison, I think, because it's just not as if Pennsylvania Democrats - who as we recall from the 2008 primary are not flaming liberals but largely blue-collar, moderate-to-liberal voters - are the left-wing equivalent of the tea party. It's a totally different dynamic. And this raises this larger question of comparisons and analogies. It's one of the running clashes on our comment threads, as you know, that I write something about the right, and conservatives always counter with some vaguely similar thing about the left, but usually the two aren't really very similar upon inspection.I'd like to lift this

    • David Baddiel on The Infidel: 'I'm not worried about a backlash'
My film is a buddy movie, and it comes from a place of love, warmth and affectionThe Infidel is really a buddy movie: to begin with, both Omid Djalili's character Mahmud, a Muslim, and Jewish cabbie Lenny are pretty racist, with very set ideas about each other's culture. But then Mahmud discovers that he was born a Jew and asks Lenny for help finding out about the religion. As they begin to like each other, their old ideas break down. The idea for the film came, in part, out of my own ethnic ambiguity. At school, a lot of people thought I was from Pakistan; I was bullied by racists both for being Pakistani and for being Jewish. Then, when I started out on TV, I got fanmail from Indians saying I was the best Indian comedian they had ever seen. Now that the two communities are so politically polarised, The Infidel's body-swap premise feels timely.I'm sure there might be some people out there who want to be angry about the movie, but I'm not worried about a backlash: we've shown it to groups of very devout Muslims, and so far they've been very positive. The important thing is that the film has a normal British Muslim family at the centre of it – they're both likable and flawed, and not defined only by their religion. There are some things that might upset Jewish people – such as a satirical scene in which Mahmud goes undercover at a bar mitzvah, and two divorcees hand him a petition in support of Israel. The big drama also comes when Mahmud and Lenny fall out over Israel – but that scene reflects the fact that Israel really is the elephant in the room in relations between Muslims and Jews. We've sold the film to 62 countries – Israel is the only one that hasn't taken it.It's not my job to promote interfaith dialogue and tolerance – I'm not a community relations officer

    • Letter: Veil ban debate
Raphaël Liogier is right to point out the problems with France's proposed ban on the veil (Comment, 27 January, which will pave the way for similar moves against other visible expressions of religion. Shutting down the right to choose to wear the veil will only further embolden Islamophobia, the far right and fascist parties. The debate has had the net effect of demonising a minority of Muslim women, who number less than 2,000 in France. It will mean the only option for many of these women will be to stay confined to their homes. All this, ironically, in the name of integration and the liberation of women. We are one society and many cultures; respecting and allowing all cultures freedom of expression, as long as this does not impinge on the rights of others, means all communities can fully contribute to society. The debate in France is already impacting here, with Ukip calling for a ban on the burka and niqab.
