    • Dariusz Butowski obituary
My friend and colleague Dariusz Butowski, who has died of cancer aged 48, was a caring GP at Sherwood House surgery in Edgbaston, Birmingham.Dariusz was born in Gdynia, Poland, and was brought up in the seaside town of Sopot. He spoke fondly of his early years, particularly of time at summer scout camps. The family lived close to the Gdansk shipyards in the early years of Solidarity, and after being good citizens for many years suddenly fell foul of the authorities. In 1979 they fled to Germany, were granted political asylum and remained in an internment camp for nine months. Dariusz, who at this point spoke only rudimentary German, learned the language and finished his baccalaureate in German. After a year reading economics, he was delighted to change to medicine at the university in Hamburg and submitted a doctorate on the biomechanics of the knee. He had to work to fund his studies and took on a variety of jobs including being a nurse and a film extra. Compulsory unpaid internships were difficult for an immigrant without independent means, so he moved to the UK, first to the military hospital in Aldershot and then to work in A&E in Glasgow, where he learned most of his English. After the usual hospital rotation, he moved to Birmingham for his general practice training and then worked for 10 years at Sherwood House. In 2008 he developed gastro-oesophageal cancer and underwent arduous and intensive treatment. The avalanche of cards and messages from staff, patients and friends kept him going through some dreadful low points, and that November he achieved his ambition to return to work. He continued to work and teach fourth-year medical students until a recurrence of cancer in March 2010. Despite further intensive treatment, he never recovered his former fitness. • German elections: Green shoots | Editorial
Unless Merkel can engineer a recovery, the German government faces a period of weakness when Europe needs German strengthEurope has seen many examples of electorates delivering the order of the boot to governments that have led them into recession and financial misery. Weekend state-level election results in Germany, however, suggest that voters who stayed in work and funds throughout the recession are just as unimpressed with the parties of power as those who have fared far worse. In the prosperous state of Baden-。ürttemberg, where the local economy is growing by an enviable 5.5% and unemployment is a mere 4.3%, voters this weekend threw out Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right CDU for the first time in half a century. In its place, they handed power to what is likely to become Germany's first Green party-led state coalition. Meanwhile in Rheinland-Pfalz, the CDU could not muster enough support to oust a tired state government led by the unpopular centre-left SPD; here again, a strong Green performance tipped the balance against Mrs Merkel's party. These are sensational results, particularly by German standards. The humiliation for the CDU is a huge one, with the loss of Baden-。ürttemberg following hard upon a bad defeat in Hamburg last month. The Green success is the third great step in the party's electoral history, following election to the Bundestag in 1983 and to coalition government in 1998. The results are a mixed bag for the SPD, which will be a party of government in both states even though its vote fell in both. But the real loser is Mrs Merkel's junior coalition ally, the liberal FDP. Its poor showing will increase the pressure on its leader Guido Westerwelle, the current foreign minister. None of this is immediately threatening to Mrs Merkel's government

    • Somali 'pirates' go on trial in Hamburg
Ten men accused of hijacking a German ship in the country's first piracy trial in 400 yearsTen Somali men went on trial in Hamburg today on piracy charges for allegedly hijacking a German container ship. The men sat in the state court, each with two attorneys, as their trial opened on charges of attacking maritime traffic and kidnapping.Three translators were present, and the courtroom was packed with reporters to witness the opening of the first piracy trial to be held in the northern port city in nearly 400 years.Prosecutors were unable to determine the ages of three of the men, so the trial is being held in a youth court. They face a possible 15 years in prison if convicted. The men were captured aboard the MV Taipan in the Gulf of Aden by Dutch marines on 5 April. The suspected pirates were extradited from the Netherlands to Germany in June. When the ship was attacked, the crew sent an emergency call and locked themselves in the vessel's security room for several hours. The 15 crew members from Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Sri Lanka stopped the ship's engine, making it impossible for the pirates to take the 140-metre-long (460-ft) Taipan to their Somali home port. After a short exchange of fire, a Dutch anti-piracy unit freed the ship, capturing the 10 suspected pirates and seizing five machine guns, two missile launchers and ammunition. None of the crew members was harmed. While there has not been a piracy trial in Germany for hundreds of years, Hamburg has a centuries-old tradition of sentencing pirates. Between 1390 and 1600, at least 533 pirates were sentenced and executed in the city. The last piracy trial is said to have taken place in 1624, according to the Museum of Hamburg History.

    • Is Hollywood finally over 9/11?
From the angry Fahrenheit 9/11 to the depressing Hamburg Cell, films about September 11 have journeyed through the five stages of grief. Now with weepies Dear John and Remember Me, the movies have come to terms with the defining event of our ageEverything is peachy at the beginning of Dear John, Lasse Hallstrom's new weepie about a soldier's star-crossed romance with a college student. That's because it's spring 2001, a time when the idea of hijacked planes slamming into the twin towers was as far-fetched as a black president or airport body scans. Midway through the film, of course, the planes finally hit, forcing Channing Tatum to leave Amanda Seyfried and do his bit for God and country. That's right, people. In just nine years, the defining event of our age has become the reason why the guy from Step Up can't be with the girl from Mamma Mia!According to Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's book On Death and Dying, the five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. By and large Hollywood seems to have gone through something similar with regards to 9/11. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy nobody dared address the event itself; it was too raw, too seismic, too hard to grasp in its entirety. The best the movies could do was to acknowledge its impact, in films like The Guys (in which journalist Sigourney Weaver helped fire captain Anthony LaPaglia pen eulogies for his fallen comrades) or The 25th Hour (which opened with shots of the towers of light that marked the half-year anniversary in 2002).If that was Tinseltown in denial, it took Michael Moore to provide the anger in his 2004 documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, which saw the portly film-maker accusing Bush and his cronies of turning the tragedy to their own advantage. In time, however, thoughts tu 怒っている飛輪海9 / 11は、気のめいるようハンブルクセル、9月11日についての映画に悲しみの5段階を経て旅をしている

    • Ole Schmidt obituary
Danish composer and conductor with a reputation for championing the unfamiliarAlthough he was best known as a conductor, Ole Schmidt, who has died aged 81, first came to public notice in his native Denmark as a composer of ballets, composing three in fairly rapid succession in the 1950s: The Fire-maker (Ildmageren, 1952), Behind the Curtain (Bag 。æppet, 1954) and Fever (Feber, 1957). Schmidt's outstanding talent on the conductor's rostrum – he had studied with Sergiu Celibidache and Rafael Kubelik – was showcased at the premiere of the third of these and the following year he took up the post of conductor at Copenhagen's Royal theatre, which he relinquished only in 1965.Following posts with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra (1969-70) and the Danish Radio Sinfonietta (1971-73), Schmidt made the leap to international prominence as a conductor in 1974 when he recorded the six Nielsen symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra for the London-based record label Unicorn. These revelatory recordings, much reissued and still available, remain the benchmark for all later Nielsen cycles and won the Carl Nielsen prize in 1975.Engagements from around the world, the UK and North America not least, raised his profile further: he became principal conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in Denmark (1978-85) and later was permanent guest conductor of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and principal guest conductor of the Toledo Symphony in Ohio. However, Schmidt followed his own unconventional, maverick star, maintaining a reputation as a champion of the unfamiliar. In Britain this was shown by his 1980 performance with 800 musicians of Havergal Brian's first symphony, The Gothic (at the instigation of his composer friend, Robert Simpson, musical adviser on the Nielsen
