- Apple's Retail Stores: More Than Magic
Among Apple’s many triumphs in the last decade has been the astonishing success of its retail stores. In 2009, when retail sales declined around 2%, Apple's retail sales rose roughly 7%. In 2010, Apple's retail sales, excluding online, jumped 70% to $11.7 billion, or about 15% of its revenues of $76.3 billion, compared to the overall retail industry's sales growth of 4.5%.
Can Apple’s success be emulated?
Most commentators dwell on the obvious but superficial features of Apple’s success including: the good design (airy interiors and attractive lighting, a carefree and casual atmosphere); attractive products (strong demand for the products) and focus (a single brand with far fewer products) scale (only a few hundred stores compared to Best Buy's more than 4,000) and clever marketing (the Steve Jobs factor). null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - iPhone 4S: Apple targets a wider audience
Apple's focus last night was on price: with iPod sales falling, and Google and Microsoft closing fast, it needs to sell more phonesApple's latest iPhone launch is all about putting the product into as many hands as already hold iPods. And to achieve this Tim Cook, officially handed the reins in August after Steve Jobs retired, has clearly decided he needs to let the iPhone become a little less premium. The focus at Tuesday's iPhone 4S launch was on price. The oldest iPhone not to be discontinued, the 3GS, will now be free with a two-year contract. The iPhone 4 range will be reduced to just one model, with a mere 8GB of storage – the biggest 4S has 64GB – but will cost just $99 on a two year tie-in.The changes to Apple's European smartphone market share for the first half of the year show why Cook needs a wider economic catchment. Samsung is gaining ground and fast. As Nokia committed hara-kiri by abandoning its Symbian operating system and letting its market share fall from over 40% in the first quarter of 2010 to 11% in the second quarter of 2011, research by analyst IDC shows that Apple did not benefit. Its share of sales fell from 25% to 21%. Samsung's rose from 2.5% to overtake Apple, with 22%. HTC gained too, rising from 8% to 14%.The east Asia contenders have allied their manufacturing expertise with Google's programming power, using the Californian company's Android operating system in an alliance that has dominated sales of mid range smart phones. It's hard to believe that Apple could be losing market share when so far this year it has sold 55m iPhones, more than twice as many as it did in the first nine months of 2010.The speed at which smartphones are being adopted can, as BlackBerry maker Research in Motion's sudden fall from grace has shown, make or break even t _NULL_

Apple's stock price has risen more than 9,000% since Steve Jobs returned in 1997, and doubled in the last two yearsNews of Steve Jobs's death drove the Apple share price down more than 5% in Frankfurt on Thursday morning. The visionary co-founder of Apple - regarded as the mastermind behind an empire of products that revolutionised computing, telephony and the music industry - died of a rare form of pancreatic cancer in California at the age of 56. He stepped down in August as chief executive of the company he set up in 1976 with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak.Apple shares are now trading 3.5% lower at €273, after hitting a low of €270 in Frankfurt. The shares are not traded in London. They are expected to open lower when Wall Street opens at 2.30pm London time.Apple was briefly the most valuable company in the world in the summer, knocking oil giant Exxon Mobil off the top spot. Revenues have soared from $7.1bn (£4.6bn) in 1997 to $65.2bn a year now.Jobs was ousted from the company in 1985 and went on to buy animation studio Pixar, before returning to Apple in 1997. It was near bankruptcy then and worth just $2bn. - Memo To CNBC: Real Titans Don't Whine
In a development that stunned Wall Street this morning, Steve Jobs made the following announcement from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, CA:
“After careful consideration, Apple has decided to postpone the launch of the iPhone 5 until 2013 because of excessive political uncertainty. We have concluded that the political landscape is too cloudy. As a result, it is impossible for us to proceed with the launch of our exciting new product. That’s because we don’t know what the tax rate will be or what our health costs will be. We are also offended that President Obama doesn’t seem to appreciate millionaires and billionaires. We recognize that Apple is sitting on more than $70 billion in cash. But don’t count on us spending any of this money any time soon. There will be no new Apple products until 2013. We expected more leadership from Washington. We cannot take any new initiative with such uncertainty.”
Just kidding!
Steve Jobs doesn’t whine
Apple’s launch of the iPhone will proceed, on schedule, in October. When genuine innovation that delights customers emerges, the political environment doesn’t matter. Real entrepreneurs embrace uncertainty and recognize that uncertainty emanating from Washington is among the least of the risks that businesses face. A much bigger risk in business is the failure to create and grasp opportunity. _NULL_

- Who's Afraid Of Radical Management? And Who's Not?
I wrote recently how Apple achieved extraordinary gains in terms of retail sales and product development by managing in a radically different way from 20th Century firms. This is not just because of Steve Jobs' magic. Apple has different management practices. The firm made more money by not aiming to make money. It sold more products by not aiming to sell more. It got more from its staff by not having sales quotas. Instead Apple focuses on delighting its customers and organizing work in such way that that goal becomes part of everyone’s job. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. What a crazy news week: Steve Jobs, the oracle of technology and creativity, died, leaving us all in a vacuum of innovation; Amanda Knox, the college student who had the worst semester abroad of anyone I know, was finally freed and returned to the United States; and, people (well, let me rephrase that: angry and/or unemployed people) are “occupying” Wall Street in protest of, umm, everything. And, just as Benjamin Lawsky (great name for the job) is about to assume the role of head of the New York Department of Financial Services, the newest regulator on the block (whose acronym sounds eerily too similar to DYFS), we hear some bizarre news about FINRA's power: they have none.

When I was nine years old, my father decided to make a major change in his career. He had been working at Hewlett Packard in their financial calculator group when he was approached by a young entrepreneur by the name of Steve Jobs with an offer to join a new company with an absolutely absurd name. Even at that young age I can remember the feeling of fear that came over me when I thought about my dad going to work for a company named after a fruit. This was in 1979. As director of software, my dad was the first person hired at Apple that officially reported to Steve Jobs. _NULL_

Even before the iPhone and the iPad, Jobs freed up graphic designers, editors, film-makers from the shackles of pre- and post-production, by adding new tools to their trade. Jobs leveled the playing field in the media industry. With the iTunes, he revolutionized multi-media, music and content-sharing. He was the drive behind many start-ups, including his own. - Apple iPhone4: an object of rare beauty that leapfrogs the competition
Jonathan Ive has designed his masterpiece, says Stephen Fry. And there's video-calling and the crispest display everJust as the frenzy of the iPad launch subsides, it is time for anti-Apple frothers to have a new device waved in their angry faces and for pro-Apple droolers to get verbally bitch-slapped in the blogosphere for falling once more for Steve Jobs's huckstering blandishments.A year ago, iPhone 3GS was released with a new operating system and now iPhone 4 arrives with iOS 4.0, offering an array of long-awaited functions. Since that 2009 3GS launch, the Taiwanese manufacturer HTC in particular has upped its game and risen to Apple's challenge, producing handsets for the Android OS that offer slews of features, including free turn-by-turn navigation, multi-tasking, removable batteries and highly customisable interfaces. What can Apple do to wrench back the crown? The iPhone 4 is an object of rare beauty. Noticeably slimmer but a trifle heavier than predecessors, its new heft only adds to the profound feeling of quality and precision that the device exudes. Sharper edged, it is girt by a stainless steel band which cleverly houses all the antennae required by a modern smartphone. Jobs himself made a comparison between iPhone 4 and a classic Leica. With this device in my hand, I feel that I am holding its designer Jonathan Ive's personal prototype, hand-machined as a proof-of-concept model. Ive is surely one of the most influential and gifted designers Britain has ever produced and the iPhone 4 may well be his masterpiece. The phone is available unlocked in the UK. Mine came with a Vodafone mini-SIM which I swapped for an Orange, the network change working perfectly straight away.
