    • They mean business on the GOP side | Michael Tomasky
As you know, GOP senator Lisa Murkowksi recently lost the Alaska senate primary to Joe Miller. She has been mulling a third-party candidacy of some sort. Today, Roll Call reports:Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) will likely be forced out of her party leadership position should she decide to launch a write-in or third-party candidacy, a Senate Republican said Wednesday. Murkowski, who conceded the GOP primary last month to Fairbanks lawyer Joe Miller, could announce as soon as Thursday whether she will continue her campaign for re-election as a write-in candidate. She has also held talks with the state's Libertarian Party leaders about running under their flag. Although Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and other GOP leaders have not yet formally discussed what to do if Murkowski does run, the Senate Republican said there is likely no scenario in which she would be allowed to remain Republican Conference vice chairwoman. According to this source, Murkowski could simply resign her position, or McConnell and other leaders could press her to resign. The conference could also formally vote to strip Murkowski of her leadership mantle.Okay now. Think back to 2006-2007. Remember what I'm talking about?Then-Democrat Joe Lieberman lost a primary, to Ned Lamont, who became the Democratic nominee for US Senate. Lieberman, of course, ran as an independent. And he won. What did the Democrats do? They sweet-talked him and made sure he retained his chairmanship of a powerful committee! Then, in 2008 - oh yes, there's more - Lieberman endorsed John McCain for president. • New York Yankees mourn the old-school sports hero who helped usher in a more cynical new era
George Steinbrenner turned a dormant power into a world-beating baseball team. But his worldwide legacy may well prove to be even more significantIt has been a tale of two very different sports heroes in America in recent days, with one marking the passing of an era and the other becoming the cynical symbol of a new one.On the one hand last week New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner succumbed to a long illness, dying at the age of 80. Irascible and outspoken, combative and brutal, the Boss turned the Yankees from a dormant power to the dominant giant of modern baseball. Loyalty to the team was his watchword. It was impossible to imagine him having anything to do with any other baseball club.Which is, unfortunately, exactly what fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team thought of their own hometown hero, LeBron James. A supremely gifted player and Ohio native, James was worshipped by Cavaliers fans: a rare example of a native son playing out his career for the local team. Until last week, that is, when James held a live special broadcast on sports network ESPN to announce he was moving to Florida to play for the Miami Heat. The reason? Well, there were 110 million of them in the shape of the dollar value of his new contract. At a stroke James went from heroic athlete to media-obsessed egotist, cashing in his loyalty cheque to the highest bidder. He is now the symbol of what many say is wrong with modern sports worldwide: money is the boss.Yet perhaps Steinbrenner and James are not quite poles apart. In creating a team of world-beaters, Steinbrenner also created a ruthless business, dragging other baseball teams in his wake. He bought the Yankees in 1973 for just $8.7m. Now they are worth $1.6bn, with their players' wage roll alone costing $206m a year.

    • Giorgio Torraca obituary
He helped preserve the Sistine Chapel and the Leaning Tower of PisaThe Italian conservation scientist Giorgio Torraca, who has died aged 83 of complications from pneumonia, was a brilliant chemist and teacher who devoted his career to the preservation of historic buildings, monuments and archaeological sites. He helped co-ordinate international responses to the flooding of Florence in 1966, was consultant from 1992 for the cleaning of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and was a member of the committee for the stabilisation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (2004-09).A frequent visitor to Britain, Torraca gave technical advice concerning the Rose theatre archaeological site, near Shakespeare's Globe theatre on the south bank of the Thames in London. In the 1990s, an office redevelopment was redesigned to allow continuing access to the remains of the Rose theatre beneath it. Up to his final illness, he was working as a consultant on the Herculaneum Conservation Project run by the British School at Rome, and advised the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles on research to improve grouts to consolidate friable historic frescoes.Torraca was born in Padova, northern Italy, the son of Vincenzo Torraca, a journalist who became a longstanding impresario at the Eliseo theatre in Rome. His mother was president of the Italian Women's Union. Giorgio graduated from Rome University with a degree in chemistry in 1950 before taking his master's at the Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1953.He undertook postgraduate work in the engineering faculty at Rome University until 1958, and during this time became a consultant to the renowned Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome. • What's John Boehner's crying game? | Suzanne Goldenberg
So why do we get misty-eyed about male politicians who tear up? If a female pol cries, she's seen as either soft or schemingYou'd think that John Boehner would have seen enough drunks blubbering into their drinks at his dad's tavern to be wary of easy tears. You know, that humble boyhood tavern in Ohio Boehner is always talking about, where he mopped floors and waited tables, until he eventually worked his way up to becoming the third most powerful man in America after Tuesday's epic Republican midterms victory.Whereupon Boehner, telling a story he must have told hundreds of times in his career, choked up in tears recalling his own accomplishments.Politicians do cry in public. The Bushes, father and son, have been known to shed a tear. Bill Clinton wells up. Barack Obama cried at a rally on the eve of the 2008 elections, when he learned the grandmother who had raised him had just died of cancer.I might be less offended if Boehner had been crying about a 9.6% unemployment rate, or the tens of thousands of people who lost their homes at the stroke of an auto-signature pen in the wrongful foreclosure scandal. But there is something unsavoury about seeing a well-off, white, middle-aged male overcome when the subject moving them to tears is their personal career track.Rahm Emanuel, a man notorious for once sending a dead fish to a political enemy and shreaking obscenities at co-workers, plumbed the same teary depths at his White House leaving ceremony last month, when he choked up at mention of his family's sacrifices. But Boehner is tearier than most when the cameras are on. He has cried accepting awards, at an unveiling of a statue of Ronald Reagan, and at a rousing chorus of America the Beautiful. Is it genuine? That's between Boehner and his handkerchief. But it's interestin

    • The margins of House races | Michael Tomasky
There's no getting around that that was just a total shellacking every way you look at it. Democrats and liberals who spend today looking for silver linings are deluding themselves. The thing I am most struck by as I scroll through individual House races is how large some of the margins were in elections that were judged to be close. Take Ohio 18. That's Democrat Zach Space. I discussed this race on a video. I had it close, with Space slightly ahead, as did most people. He lost by 14 points. Next door in Ohio, Democrat Charlie Wilson was maybe supposed to win and lost by five. One of my four bellwethers was Indiana's 9th, with Democrat Baron Hill. He lost by nearly 10. Although it does seem that Oregon's Kurt Schrader held on, as did (apparently) Arizona's Gabrielle Giffords. But a lot of the margins were crushing. Alan Grayson in Orlando, held out by the liberal blogosphere as an example of a liberal who voted bravely and gave 'em what-for in a swing district and would prove that it could be done? Walloped by 20 points. And of course a number of races went Republican that weren't generally expected to.All these numbers tell us something about who turned out. I haven't looked deeply into that yet. I do know that young voters made up less than 10% of the electorate, whereas they were 18% in 2008. It appears that except for in a few states, like Illinois, Democrats didn't get their vote out. I expected a higher-than-anticipated Democratic turnout in Illinois in particular, which is why I pegged Giannoulias to upset Kirk. And he came closer than expected by most, but came up short.Flordia governor is still not called, and that's one to watch. The Republican, Rick Scott, is ahead slightly. And of course Alaska senator, which Murkowski evidently has won, though it won't be kno

    • Carl Paladino: gay pride marches and 'brainwashing' children
Republican candidate for New York governor criticises rival for marching in gay pride parade• Carl Paladino, Republican candidate for New York governor, sometime forwarder of racist and pornographic emails, launched an attack on gay pride marches while addressing Orthodox Jewish leaders in Brooklyn yesterday.I didn't march in the gay parade this year - the gay pride parade this year. My opponent did, and that's not the example we should be showing our children. You can see his entire take on homosexuality in the video below. It's all about its impact on the children, he says. Key quote:And don't misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way, that would be a dastardly lie. My approach is live and let live. I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don't want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option - it isn't.Paladino beat establishment Republican candidate Rick Lazio for the party's nomination for governor last month. • Treasures from Budapest | Visual art review
Royal Academy, LondonIt is understandable that publicists for this exhibition chose to put Egon Schiele's 1915 work Two Women Embracing on the posters. Sex sells, and drawing does not come any sexier than Schiele's transfixing image, whose ultimate provocation is the way one of the women looks around at the artist to show that she is gratifying his fantasy. But there is more to the foregrounding of this erotic masterpiece than commerce: it exemplifies a theme that runs through this once-in-a-lifetime show. From the first room, where Hungarian gothic altarpieces are juxtaposed with Italian Renaissance delights, to the last, where Schiele gives you a final thrill, the art of central Europe is richly mingled with extraordinary works from the west that are in Hungary's public collections. I've never seen such a generous loan from one country's museums – by comparison, the Hermitage exhibit at the RA was quite cautious. This is a true blockbuster, practically a museum in itself, stuffed with surprises and marvels. Highlights include a portrait by Frans Hals that proves him the equal of his contemporary Rembrandt, a pair of working-class heroes painted by Goya, a Raphael homage to Da Vinci and, oh yes, a couple of Leonardo's own greatest designs. And that merely scratches the surface. The thread that connects it all is a vision of Europe. Western Europe's artistic development has been written as a march of progress since the Renaissance. Hungarian collectors fully subscribed to that version, and bought some supreme Italian works. But here you see those paragons alongside carved wooden saints from Hungarian churches in a way that expands your sense of the variety and greatness of the continent's heritage. European art through Hungarian eyes is a landscape made new.

    • Sri Lanka, no Indian Ocean paradise | Robert Mahoney
The country is trying to lure back tourists after the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, but its poor human rights record hasn't improvedBritons are again flocking to Sri Lanka. Tourist arrivals surged 47% last month from a year earlier and sun-seekers from the UK form the largest single group. That's an astounding turnaround for a country that for more than a quarter of a century had been a case study in ethnic warfare, terrorism and brutal repression. This week the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, buoyed by recent wins in presidential and parliamentary elections, marks the first anniversary of its military victory over the separatist Tamil Tigers. In the past few months Sri Lanka has been trying to burnish its image as an Indian Ocean paradise. And with some success. In January, the influential travel section of The New York Times slapped a picture of Colombo's colonial-era Galle Face hotel on its front page and put Sri Lanka at the top of its 31 Places To Go in 2010 list. And a western tourist sipping palm wine on a white sand beach or Ceylon tea in a plantation hill station might agree. The weather's balmy, the people smile, and the price is oh-so right. What visitors might not notice is that broad swaths of the mainly Tamil north and east of the country are still effectively closed military zones, and tens of thousands of Tamil civilians displaced by last year's army onslaught are still held in camps. Visitors would have a hard time finding independent reporting on these stories in the Sri Lankan media. But not to worry. So would Sri Lankans.Peace may be bringing a dividend for tourism and other business, but not for free speech. The Tamil press has long been intimidated and is extremely wary of being the first to break news critical of the government or the militar

    • Ann Widdecombe is not cut out to be Vatican ambassador | Andrew Brown
Making Ann Widdecombe our woman at the Vatican would be a diplomatic disasterIf Ann Widdecombe is really a serious candidate as the next British ambassador to the Vatican, should we next expect the appointment of Melanie Phillips as ambassador to Washington? They are not as different as they may seem – both of them intelligent and energetic women, wildly out of step with majority British beliefs on the things they really care about, and neither known ever to express someone else's opinion. These are qualities that make for good columnists, but the role of a diplomat is a little different. The British ambassador to the Holy See is someone whose job is to understand and mutually interpret the attitudes of the Vatican and the British government and to broaden their mutual sympathy. I can't easily imagine Widdecombe expressing anyone else's opinions, yet that is one of the central skills of diplomacy. Purely as a piece of symbolism, there is something in this appointment to upset most people. For the Vatican, there is the fact of a woman who won't hesitate to tell them what to do; but she won't, when she does so, be representing any significant strand of British opinion. Since she left the Church of England in principled disagreement over women priests, she clearly represents a minority opinion among British Christians. Her contempt for Anglicanism doesn't really fit her to explain the religious landscape of this country. For secularists she is anyway anathema, rather like the post she is proposed to fill. Within the Catholic church, as a prominent straight single lay conservative, she forms part of a minority of, oh, about two. She is certainly not the candidate of the Bishops' conference, but she has also been attacked by the conservative Damian Thompson, who calls her th

    • 2012 US election calendar begins to take shape | Richard Adams
Republicans choose the city of Tampa in Florida as the site of the party's 2012 presidential nominating conventionJust to show that it's never too soon to be thinking about the 2012 presidential elections, the Republican party today named Tampa as the site of its 2012 convention – meaning that the GOP convention will be hot stuff in all senses. The Republican convention will take place in the St Pete Times Forum on the week beginning 27 August. Florida in August? Tampa has an average daytime temperature of a toasty 90 degrees in August, with high humidity. It's also reputed to be the lap-dancing capital of America.Another major contender was Phoenix, Arizona, and the heat there in August is furnace-like, so between that and the immigration law controversy the RNC made a smart call.Conventional wisdom has it that the site of its convention gives that party a boost in that state during the following election, although the evidence is mixed. But Florida remains hugely important in US politics and is a genuine swing state, so it's worth a shot. The Democratic party convention – a far less exciting prospect with a sitting president – is the following week, from 3 September, but the DNC hasn't decided on a venue yet. The contenders are said to be St Louis, Cleveland, Houston and Charlotte, according to various reports. Houston in August would make Tampa seem bracing. Being in Ohio, Cleveland would match Florida in the crucial swing-state stakes. The Republican primary calendar is the one to watch, and the party's sexily-named temporary delegate selection committee is said to be recommending that no contests be held prior to 1 February, and that only Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina be allowed to hold their primaries and caucuses before the start of March.
