    • Watch out for the Brics … and for the Next 11 | Larry Elliott
The British simply don't get the transformation being wrought to the global economy not just by the four big Brics but by 11 smaller briquettesJim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs claims credit for thinking up the mnemonic Brics, which is now universally used as shorthand for the four fast-growing economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China.Speaking at an Institute for Economic Affairs conference in London on Thursday, he said that in the UK we simply don't get the transformation being wrought to the global economy not just by the four big Brics but by 11 smaller briquettes following in their wake.O'Neill's point is a good one. There has been so much navel-gazing going on in the west since the start of the financial crisis three and a half years ago that there has been a tendency to underestimate the shift in the economic balance of power that is now under way. Here are some of the relevant facts. The Brics and the so-called Next 11 (Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, the Philippines and Vietnam) have a combined population of 4.5 billion, almost 75% of the global total. They are growing much more rapidly than the advanced countries of North America and Europe, with O'Neill predicting that the new Growth 8 (the Brics plus Korea, Indonesia, Turkey and Mexico) will grow four to five times as quickly as the United States between now and the end of the decade. China alone will account for half this growth.O'Neill drew three conclusions from these trends. First, it is no longer really tenable – and in fact a bit disrespectful – to call a country like China an emerging economy. As the second biggest economy in the world, it has emerged.Second, the events witnessed in north Africa and the Middle East in recent weeks are part of a movement tha

    • I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky | Theatre review
Theatre Royal Stratford East, LondonJohn Adams, the contemporary composer whose works include Nixon in China and The Death of Klinghoffer, believes that the Broadway musical is art, not just entertainment. So it's intriguing to see his 1995 song play, which takes its title from a comment made by a survivor of the 1994 Californian earthquake, being treated as musical theatre by a Theatre Royal team that is tirelessly probing what a musical can be in the 21st century. Alas, it's no West Side Story, even though it touches upon issues of racial conflict and persecution of immigrants. It's the tremors of the heart and the faultlines that run through society rather than geology that are under consideration as former gang leader Dewain is arrested by LAPD cop Mike and faces a return to jail. But public defender, Rick, the son of Vietnamese boat people, is determined to get him off, despite antagonism from newsreporter Tiffany. Throw in a romance between a womanising preacher, David, and his reluctant love, Leila, and the stage is set for some seismic upheavals.Or it should be. It's easy to see why in 1995 some turned up their noses at a score that owes more to pop than contemporary music, but several of the songs display the tunefulness and natural, move-the-story-on drama that any good musical number requires. They are well sung, too, by a game cast. But the tediously earnest book and lyrics lack narrative clarity and impetus, and the production never finds a way to match the impressionistic restless quality of the score with something as visually expressive. You keep wondering why these people are gazing at their navels and singing rather than offering first aid. About 2.5 on the Richter scale. Until 17 July. • Larry King has gone – and primetime TV itself could follow him
Larry King's audience dropped 36% and US news shows are losing viewers too. Is it the end of 24/7 television?Larry King gives up his CNN show after 25 primetime years and a nation (allegedly) weeps. But look for the bigger picture as well as a hankie. The Larry interview show has lost 36% of its audience in a year. The Campbell Brown show that preceded it is no more: Ms Brown watched 35% go and decided to spend more time with her children. Last April, John King, who starts CNN evenings, attracted only 109,000 viewers under the age of 54. Puny numbers. Cue advertisers spending more time with their navels.CNN is in trouble – trouble that recruiting Piers Morgan as the new Larry may not assuage. But then, if you change channels, the Fox Report is 12% below its best, too – and MSNBC's Hardball has just seen 8% of its audience disappear. Is this a failure of the programmes the cable kings mount? Or something more: the beginning of inexorable decline as news-on-demand from your laptop supplants repetition on your TV screen? In short, is the entire 24/7 TV genre past its prime?Television industryLarry KingUnited StatesCNNPeter Prestonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds ラリーキングの観客は36%減、米国のニュース番組も視聴者を失っている

    • Fashion show defies Taliban in Pakistan's Peshawar
Days after bombers tried to storm the US consulate, models defied the Taliban to sashay down a catwalk in Pakistan's troubled city Peshawar, flashing navels and exposing shoulders.Organisers told AFP that the private fashion show, arranged by a private university in the northwestern metropolis of 2.5 million, was intended as a stress reliever in a city that has been hard hit by bomb and suicide attacks.
