When you combine Michele Bachmann, one of America's most strident politicians, and Matt Taibbi, one of its more scorching polemicists, you know things are going to get intense. But the reaction Rolling Stone got for Taibbi's new profile of Bachmann wasn't exactly the one it was hoping for: The magazine is now facing allegations that it used another outlet's reporting in a way that disguised how little legwork Taibbi did of his own.

    • Kitty Empire's best pop of 2010
The Observer's pop critic reviews a year in which teen pop triumphed over rockFor those listening out for high notes in a withering music industry, the arrival of Take That's Progress album provided some succour. The reunion between Robbie Williams and his erstwhile bandmates sold a much-trumpeted 235,000 on its first day, making it the fastest-selling album so far this century in the UK.But before we raise a toast, it's worth contrasting these with the first day sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops. This shoot-em-up video game had sold 1.4m copies on its first day one week earlier, wiping the floor not only with all music, but with many blockbuster movies as well.Hand-wringers might have had cause to despair of end times thanks also to the rise and rise of Justin Bieber, a US teen-pop moppet seemingly constructed entirely from tweets. Pop ruled; rock sold poorly – unless you're counting all those Kings of Leon mega-gigs, and the stubborn cultural presence of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The Stones had their first No 1 album in 16 years with the re-release of Exile on Main Street, and Keef's autobiography garnered much traction by pointing out some uncharitable things about Mick. The two Apples – Corps and Inc – finally worked out how to digitally juice the Beatles' back catalogue. But surely we have evolved beyond a mindset in which the rude health of music is equated with a preponderance of guitar bands. In many ways, 2010 felt like a groundhog year – 2009, slight return. Homegrown urban music flourished in 2009; 2010 produced a new star in Tinie Tempah. Lady Gaga was omnipresent again, pimping steak tartare couture and touring here twice, even though she released no new music in 2010.Giving music away for free had its cultural moment with Radiohead's In Rainbows in

    • General Stanley McChrystal to retire from US military | Richard Adams
Stanley McChrystal, after stepping down as Nato's top commander in Afghanistan, is to retire from the US militaryGeneral Stanley McChrystal, who was forced to resign in dramatic circumstances last week as commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan, has told the army that he will cut his ties with the institution he has spent his adult life serving.McChrystal's career came to an abrupt halt after embarrassing revelations from a profile in Rolling Stone magazine. It reported the general and his aides making disparaging remarks about civilian leadership, including President Obama and the vice-president, Joe Biden. An army spokesman said McChrystal, 55, has told notified the army of his plan to retire, but he has not yet submitted formal retirement papers.McChrystal's decision was not unexpected. One of his predecessors, General David McKiernan, was fired as the top commander in Afghanistan in 2009 and left the Army shortly after.A poll conducted over the weekend found that most Americans agreed with President Obama's decision to relieve McChrystal of his command after the article's publication. The survey of 1,000 adults found that 53% agreed with Obama's decision to accept McChrystal's resignation, while 28% disagreed and 18% were undecided.McChrystal's retirement pension might not be as lucrative as it could have been. Because he didn't serve long enough as a four-star general, his pension will be based on his previous three-star rank. McChrystal graduated from the West Point military academy in 1976, and has spent his entire career in the army.On Tuesday, the Senate armed service committee holds confirmation hearings for McChrystal's replacement in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus. McChrystal。。

    • Michael Tomasky: McChrystal resigning, says CNN
Just breaking right now, 5 pm east coast time:General Stanley McChrystal has submitted has submitted his resignation, an unnamed source has told Time magazine. CNN tweeted news of the resignation. More details to follow.Apparently Joe Klein told CNN this around 4:40 pm. Joe would know, I'd think. He's been heavy on top of all things Afghanistan. Here's a page from CNN's blog with a little bit more. It's a break for Obama in that it obviously saves Obama having to make the call. Of course maybe he did make the call in private. Whether the White House told the general that he was going to be canned and they'd let him save face by resigning, we don't yet know.Remember - this is all happening right on the verge of the supposed big Kandahar offensive. The best argument against McChrystal leaving was that, and the general parlous condition of an effort that isn't going well and is supposed to end, or start ending, within a year. They need to get someone in that job fast, and someone who doesn't need to spend another three months reviewing the situation. This is certainly one for the history books. It's not quite up there with Truman and MacArthur, because MacArthur was far more subordinate over a longer period. But it's close. Maybe it will lead to some kind of more general reassessment of the civ-mil balance of power, which has tilted strongly in the military's direction in recent years because Democrats are too timid to take them on and Republicans are less inclined to. We'll see. In the meantime, a stunning day. And certainly one of the biggest deals in the history of Rolling Stone magazine, up there with their Patty Hearst coverage, or bigger.Obama administrationAfghanistanMichael Tomaskyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subj
