    • Music Weekly podcast: Protest songs special
As a new book about the history of protest songs is released, we look at the past, present and future of the genre. Why isn't Chris Martin protesting against the cuts in song? We find that despite arguments that protest songs are still being written, modern examples tend to be less explicit.Dorian Lynskey talks to Alexis Petridis about his new book 33 Revolutions Per Minute, which tells the history of protest music through 33 tracks. We also hear from the Agitator's Derek Meins, who supports contemporary protest groups such as UK Uncut and the university occupations with his music; and singer Hannah Peel covers the Doors anti-Vietnam war song Unknown Soldier.Plus: Michael Hann joins Dorian and Alexis to profile the story behind tracks by Ramones, Machine and Nina Simone.Leave your reviews of those tracks and any other comments below, or on our Facebook page or by talking to us on Twittter.

    • A return to the gold standard would solve nothing
Robert Zoellick's proposal may seem to offer inflation security, but there are too many strong reasons against itFor its die-hard supporters, the call from Robert Zoellick for a return to the gold standard was like manna from heaven. For years, decades even, they have been hankering after the certainty and inflation security that linking currencies to gold at a fixed parity would provide, and now they have a champion with real clout. Zoellick, the president of the World Bank, is an international policy maker of great seniority. He has steered the bank into calmer waters after Paul Wolfowitz's troubled presidency, and was previously Washington's chief negotiator at the Doha trade talks. And, without doubt, a return to gold has some attractions. The international currency system is in turmoil; countries are adopting beggar-my-neighbour devaluations; the gold price has soared to just shy of $1,400 (£868) an ounce and this week's G20 meeting in South Korea is shaping up to be an ill-tempered affair. It's possible to trace the causes of the turmoil all the way back to the break-up of the Bretton Woods system in 1971, when the twin cost of the Vietnam War and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society spending programmes proved too much for the United States, lynchpin of the post-war fixed exchange rate system. In the 1970s, the major currencies floated freely; in the 1980s there were attempts through the G7 Plaza and Louvre deals to manage them; over the past 15 years a quasi-Bretton Woods system has developed in which some countries like China have pegged their currencies to the dollar but others have floated. None of the alternatives to the original Bretton Woods has proved successful. There is, therefore, a pressing need for a new international currency agreement that can help reduce th

    • Connecticut contest gets easier for Richard Blumenthal | Richard Adams
The chances of Richard Blumenthal winning in Connecticut increase after Republican Vietnam veteran rival withdrawsRichard Blumenthal, the Democratic nominee for the Senate seat in Connecticut up for grabs in November, received a boost today with the news that his Republican rivals have been whittled down. Blumenthal, you may recall, was in hot water last week after the New York Times – in a prominent but flawed investigation – exposed him exaggerating his thin military service to suggest he served in Vietnam. To make matters worse for Blumenthal, one of his Republican rivals was Rob Simmons, an actual decorated Vietnam war veteran. But today Simmons announced he was withdrawing from the Republican primary contest – leaving the way open for the leading candidate, Linda McMahon, to cruise to the nomination. Simmons had been the frontrunner but couldn't compete with McMahon's deep pockets.Polling after the news about Blumenthal's Vietnam record broke showed him slipping slightly against McMahon but still with a firm lead. But Simmons would have been a stronger candidate in the circumstances than McMahon, who made her money as a co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment.Yesterday Blumenthal finally issued a formal apology for his Vietnam errors. Lucky for him, the NYT's poor job and the excitement over Rand Paul's victory in Kentucky deflected attention from his claims.US CongressConnecticutRepublicansDemocratsObama administrationUS politicsUnited StatesRichard Adamsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Letters: WikiLeaks, secrecy and extradition
There seems to be an assumption that any US attempt to extradite Julian Assange will have to take place after Sweden's European arrest warrant has been disposed of (The US embassy cables, 18 December). I'm not so sure. Hidden away in part 5 of the UK's Extradition Act is section 179. This appears to deal with the situation where an EAW is in process and an extradition request is received from a category 2 country, such as the US. When this happens, it is the home secretary who decides which goes first. That decision is based, in part, on four criteria, one of which is the relative seriousness of the offences concerned. Doesn't this imply that the home secretary, after weighing a request to an interview by the Swedish police against a US grand jury indictment for espionage, could order a halt to the EAW and let the US extradition request go ahead first?Mike PowellVictoria, British Columbia, Canada• Some people assert that diplomatic negotiating is impossible without the secrecy that is breached by WikiLeaks. Yet the opposite is the truth. Negotiations are made difficult by mismatches of knowledge between parties, which force them to gamble and bluff in the face of uncertainties. A key factor in the causation of wars is discrepancies of information. For instance, Stalin's ignorance of Hitler's intentions in 1941 and Hitler's ignorance of the defensive capabilities of the USSR led to war on the eastern front. If we'd had WikiLeaks-type unsecrecy back then, that biggest conflict in history might not have happened.Robin ClarkeBirmingham• Comparison has been made between WikiLeaks and the Pentagon papers during the Vietnam war. But one can go much further back. In 1645, after King Charles I's defeat at the battle of Naseby in the English civil war, his letters were captured

    • Guangxi in major push for regional trade
Fangchenggang port on the south coast of Guangxi was built in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam war to ship military supplies to the conflict-torn country. The cities of Nanning , Chongzuo and Fangchenggang reaped the benefits of that lengthy battle. Today, these same cities in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are involved in more peaceful pursuits with the Southeast Asian country.
