    • Andres Serrano's Piss Christ is the original shock art
Christian protesters who attacked the work have risen to the artist's bait and misunderstood his sincerityBefore sharks swam in formaldehyde, there was Piss Christ. With this work in 1987, Andres Serrano created what is surely the visual manifesto and original prototype of the use of shock in contemporary art.Other 1980s artists, including Robert Mapplethorpe and Richard Serra, ran into controversy, but Piss Christ is distinguished by its calculated offence and rhetorical nature – the way it sets out to be unmissably outrageous and adopts that offence as part of its meaning.I mean, it's called Piss Christ and is said to be made using the artist's own urine. It is far more polemical than, say, a Mapplethorpe photograph of sadomasochist rites where the artist portrays what he found beautiful and causes offence almost accidentally. As such, Piss Christ is one of the most influential works of art of the past 30 years, the model for a strategy that has transformed the public impact of art.Yet the joke on the latest protesters to take Serrano's bait – hey look, Christians, I've urinated on the son of God! – is that Piss Christ works well as a modern work of religious art. I don't know if the curators of the Vatican museum have considered buying a print, but it possesses a richly traditional dimension. The passion of Christ has always been associated with bodily fluids – it is true that artists traditionally stressed blood rather than urine, but they scarcely stinted on the revulsion of Christ's fleshly death.Piss Christ can be legitimately compared to the horrible sores and green pus on the body of Grunewald's Christ in the Isenheim altarpiece, or painted wooden statues in baroque churches with their lifelike gore and jewelled tears, or Caravaggio's Saint Thomas sticking his 仕事を攻撃、キリスト教のデモ隊がアーティストの餌に上昇している、ホルムアルデヒドの彼のsincerityBeforeのサメの泳ぎを誤解して、尿キリストがあった

    • Italy shuts out Sex and the Vatican | John Hooper
A book about priests' sex lives, their mistresses and their children has been met in Italy with a wall of embarrassed silenceIt promised to arouse discussion and create a bit of commotion, said a dispatch from the Italian agency, Ansa, on April 18.And, indeed, that is the way it seemed when Carmelo Abbate's book, Sex and the Vatican, was published last month. The book grew out of an investigation by the author, published last year by Panorama news magazine, into the double lives of some gay priests in Rome. But Sex and the Vatican goes much further. It looks at such taboo issues for the Roman Catholic church as the women who become priests' mistresses and the children they have (and those they abort). It details allegations of the rape of nuns by priests. And it concludes that large parts of the clergy are leading double lives because of the crushing burden placed on them by the Vatican's insistence that they lead lives of celibacy and chastity.Spicy stuff, I think you'll agree. The French edition shot to number 12 in Amazon.fr's non-fiction bestseller list as the initial print run sold out in under a week. Abbate was interviewed at length on one of France's prime-time current affairs programmes. There have been articles about him and his book in various French dailies. Now there is a television documentary in the making for French television, based on his disclosures. In Italy, by contrast, the publication of Sex and the Vatican has been met with a wall of embarrassed silence. It is as if it had never happened. Before writing this article, I did a search on the Factiva newspaper database to check my subjective impression. It indicated that, apart from Ansa's dispatch (and an extensive preview in Panorama), the only article on Sex and the Vatican in the Italian press appear 聖職者の性生活、その愛人とその子供たちについての本は、4月18.Andで、イタリア代理店、アンサから派遣を議論を喚起し、作成する騒ぎのビットを約束して恥ずかしそうsilenceItの壁にイタリアで満たされている、実際のところ、それはそれはカーメロ大修道院長の本は、セックス、バチカンは、先月出版されたときに見えたの方法です

    • Father Austin Smith obituary
The Catholic church of St Anne's in Liverpool was full to overflowing for the funeral of my friend Father Austin Smith, who has died aged 82. He was a complex, learned man, acutely aware of the political climate and yet rooted in his native city which had suffered the decline and dismantling of communities. In October 1971, Austin established the Passionist Inner City Mission in Toxteth. He continued to be a much loved and active presence in the Liverpool 8 district for the following 40 years. His influence extended far beyond. For many years, Austin was assistant chaplain at Walton prison. It was only ill-health that forced his retirement after 14 years' service.Born in Liverpool, one of two sons of Jim and Josephine Smith, he was educated by the Christian Brothers, and joined the Passionist religious order in his early teens. Pursuing his interest in philosophy and church social teaching, he began to earn a national reputation as a preacher and lecturer and was closely involved with Young Christian Workers and Young Christian Student movements in the 1960s.Then, encouraged by the fresh vitality after the Second Vatican Council, Austin made the choice not to settle in the comfort of monastic life, but began to articulate and propose new ways to reach out to people in places stigmatised as marginal. With the blessing of his congregation, he established the Passionist mission in Toxteth. His contribution to the struggle to overcome racism is well documented. Significantly, in 1981, during the Toxteth riots, Austin played a positive and pivotal role in articulating the deeper issues that were at play. He was uniquely placed to act as a go-between for the local community, the church hierarchy and the city leaders. He was a modest man, unimpressed by power or authority, sensi リバプールのセントアンズのカトリック教会は82歳で死亡した私の友人の父オースティンスミス、の葬儀のためにあふれに満ちていました

    • Vatican recognises sighting of Virgin Mary in Wisconsin
Shrine in Champion where Mary is said to have appeared in 1859 becomes first US site with official sighting statusThe Vatican has recognised that a chapel in Champion, near Green Bay in north-east Wisconsin, is the location of an official sighting of the Virgin Mary. It is said to be the only site in the US with that distinction. David Ricken, the bishop of Green Bay, says the Virgin Mary appeared there three times to Belgian immigrant Adele Brise in 1859. People have since visited the site to pray for miracles. Ricken has investigated the events and three theological experts have checked his work. After two years, experts decided the claims were true. • Letters: Pope should quit over abuse cover-up
Despite everything – and everything is a lot – Madeleine Bunting (Comment, 6 September) is right that Pope Benedict deserves a hearing. If the supreme pontiff wanted to restore the moral credibility of his church, he could do even better than that. He could, as Jesus did, take the sins of his brethren on himself. He could quit, whether personally responsible for the global cover-up that has put Roman Catholicism into an unprecedented crisis or not. That there is no precedent for a papal resignation would make it totally remarkable, even saintly. In secular terms, the holy father would, however, be doing no more than any CEO of an international corporation in a comparably disgraceful situation. He would be forced by his chairman to go. God has abdicated that kind of authority and left even a pope with free will. There is, as it happens, a recent Protestant precedent. When the Lutheran bishop of Hamburg learned of a serious case of child abuse within her jurisdiction, though not directly responsible, she promptly resigned. Anything less, she said, would not suffice. Perhaps a woman's moral sensibility is stronger. Were that, per impossibile, to happen at the Vatican, a successor would be set free to embark on the new reformation that would need to centre on vital issues of gender and sexuality.Canon Paul OestreicherBrighton, East SussexPope Benedict XVICatholicismChristianityguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds すべてにもかかわらず - 、すべては多くの - マドレーヌバンティング(コメント、6〜9月)右にローマ法王ベネディクトは、聴覚に値する

    • Pope's visit: stylewatch
Armed with his favourite red loafers, Pope Benedict showed he can style an accessory like no other faith leaderUnsurprisingly Benedict XVI opted to wear his favourite red leather loafers yesterday. And no, as the Vatican has tirelessly insisted over the past few years, they aren't by Prada but by Adriano Stefanelli, a little-known Italian cobbler. They also clearly serve as a sartorial comfort blanket: when playing to an uncertain crowd, it's often best to stick to a wardrobe you can count on.Benedict did show he can style an accessory like no other faith leader. Other older men might have draped the tartan rug across their knee, but that would have been too close to nursing-home chic. Instead the pontiff slung it casually across his shoulders, suggesting he was immediately at home in the popemobile. His only wardrobe malfunction? He should have perhaps applied a dash of Touche Eclat concealer under his eyes to hide his dark circles.Pope Benedict XVICatholicismChristianityReligionFashionguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • What is the Catholic future? | The question
Have the abuse scandals marked a turning point? After the dust has settled, what will be the future for the Roman Catholic church? Will it have one at all? Depending on whom you read, this is the worst crisis since the reformation, or merely since the Modernist convulsions of the early 20th century. Inside the Vatican, however, everyone seems confident that the right measures have been put in place; the guilty will be punished, and the scoffing infidels left behind.Suppose this month's scandals have not been a turning point. In that case they have certainly accentuated trends which were already under way: the shrinkage and declining prestige of the celibate priesthood in the west; the hostility of secular opinion; the breakup of Catholic Ireland; Benedict XVI's conviction that it is the modern world that is out of step with reality. Are all these developments inevitable or will there be some other turning point?CatholicismChristianityguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • A Vatican PR catastrophe | Andrew Brown
A coming revision of Vatican rules yokes together women priests and child abuseOne thing in favour of organised religion is that it could be used to to drive spin doctors insane. Suppose you were charged with PR for the Vatican, and learned of an upcoming revision of the code of Canon Law, which would make plain that child abuse is classified as amongst the gravest offences a priest can commit – that's the good news. Then you read on, and discover that the same revision will add to this list of dreadful offences the attempted ordination of women. Really. One can see how this happened. The serious offences here being classified are divided into moral and sacramental ones; roughly speaking those which anyone might commit, and those which only a priest can, by virtue of his office. So the moral offences include child abuse, the use of child pornography, and so forth. The sacramental offences are things like violating the seal of the confessional, desecrating the eucharistic Host – and taking part in a ceremony where a woman is ordained. The sacramental offences are only of concern to the Catholic hierarchy, whereas the moral ones are almost certain to be crimes under the civil law as well. But the important thing from the point of a Vatican lawyer is that the most serious of all these cases, of whatever sort, are dealt with in Rome.Obviously, if what you are trying to do is to maintain a functioning priesthood, then ritual or sacramental crimes are just as capable of destroying it as moral ones. So from that perspective it is makes perfect sense to have a list which combines the two, and I don't think (though I may be wrong) that any official Catholic would maintain that assisting at the ordination service of a woman is morally comparable to child abuse. • Vatican bank chief investigated over money laundering claims
In unprecedented move, judge freezes €23m held in account at financial institution with close church linksThe head of the Vatican bank has formally been placed under investigation in an inquiry into a suspected violation of Italy's money-laundering laws, judicial sources said today. At the same time, a judge in Rome ordered a freeze on €23m (£19.5m) held in an account opened by the Vatican bank, the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), at another financial institution in the Italian capital. It was thought to be the first time such action had been authorised against the IOR in Italy.Since last September, the Bank of Italy has classified the Vatican bank as a non-EU institution whose dealings with other banks are thus subject to especially close scrutiny. The sources said that last Wednesday, on the eve of Pope Benedict's departure for Britain, a unit of the Italian revenue guard alerted prosecutors to an anomaly in an account owned by the IOR at the Rome branch of Credito Artigiano, which has close historic ties to the Catholic church.Of the €28m deposited, €23m was destined for transfer to JP Morgan in Frankfurt and another €3m to another Italian bank. But in neither case, it is alleged, had the Vatican's bankers supplied details of the individual or corporation for whom they were acting, as required by a 2007 legislative decree. The sources said the president of the IOR, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, and another senior executive were under investigation. It was not immediately clear whether there was any connection between this inquiry and another in which the Vatican bank has been named, which concerns suspect property dealings. The Vatican has a long history of withholding co-operation from Italian investigators seeking access to its bank's books. • An Orthodox-Roman rapprochement | Hugh O'Shaugnessy
Pope Benedict's recent visit to Cyprus embodies the growing warmth between the churches, after centuries of poor relationsThere can't be much longer to wait, as the visit of Pope Benedict to Cyprus this month has shown. The Roman church and the independent Orthodox churches who acknowledge the leadership of Bartholomew, patriarch of Constantinople, are moving as swiftly as ecclesiastical bureaucracies will allow, to reunite. Not before time, they are setting aside the theological niceties backed by strong doses of odium theologicum which poisoned relations among them over a millennium of scandalous division. The presence of Benedict in Nicosia and a warm relationship he cemented with the Cypriot orthodox Archbishop Chrisotomos, is the latest of an increasing volume of contacts which date back to 1964 when Paul VI met and greeted the patriarch of Constantinople Athenagoras. The mutual anathemas launched on each other by the Vatican and the patriarchate in Constantinople over the centuries have been solemnly been rescinded and a formal patching up of the wounds and declaration of renewed unity cannot be long delayed. Soon the first ever meeting of the leader of the western church, Benedict in Rome and the Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill in Moscow will take place. In Moscow Kirill oversaw the publication in Russian and Italian in December of a volume of Benedict's works with an introduction written by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. A bishop who could be called the foreign minister of Russian Orthodoxy, Hilarion headed a delegation to Benedict in Rome the other day as the Vatican was bringing out a volume of the writings by Kirill on the dignity of man and human rights. • Even atheists should welcome Benedict's visit | Kevin McKenna
Despite his uncuddly image, the pope has a message for believers and deniers alikeYou know the world's natural order has settled down again when the Free Church of Scotland has voiced its disapproval of a papal visitation.Several months have elapsed since it was announced that Benedict XVI would be embarking on a pilgrimage to Britain, yet in vain have I waited for them to denounce this man of perdition. There hasn't even been a reference to the whore of Rome, nor hint of Beelzebub's Footstool. In the name of the half-shut tabernacle door, what has been afflicting the Free Kirk, my favourite other Christian denomination? Finally, and to my relief, they broke cover and questioned the UK government's decision to invite the old bead-rattling idolator as a head of state, perhaps forgetting that, being the chief of the Vatican state, Benedict does indeed qualify for such a courtesy. The members of the Free Church are the admirable and stout-hearted yeomen of the Lord's regiments. Long have they attracted a disproportionate share of the sophisticated world's derision and opprobrium for their adherence to the unsullied word of Christ. It is natural that their lips must curl in disdain at we Romans' fondness for the trinkets and the ephemera of our gilded worship which can seem to dilute the pure Gospel truth. But I fear they may just have to thole our scarlet triumphalism for a day or so and then it will be all over for another generation. The Wee Frees' angst was occasioned by the formal confirmation of Benedict's itinerary on 16 September. Concerns over a perceived lack of enthusiasm among Catholics for the visit and the continuing furore over the church's sex abuse scandal had cast doubt on the visit's viability. The Catholic church has agreed to meet half the bill of the two

    • The pontiff is not so potent | Andrew Brown
The shape of the world's oldest living bureaucracy, the Catholic church, is very much misunderstoodOne of the things that both the pope and his enemies agree on in the current crisis looks completely obvious: the Catholic church is a global organisation. It may be the instrument of the salvation of the world, or it may be, in the words of one excited online commenter, the greatest criminal conspiracy in history; but either way it matters, and the pope runs it. What he says goes, and what he believes is what all Catholics ought to believe.I think that both camps are wrong. Whether or not the church should work like that, it doesn't. At the end of this crisis, this will be still more obviously true: whatever form the church does survive in, it will be more decentralised. But in the meantime, the belief that the Catholic church is an efficient organisation, in the sense that Google or Toyota might be, simply misleads everyone involved.Because the Catholic church appears to be one global body, the crimes of any Catholic priest anywhere, or at any time, appear to contaminate all of them; the inaction or complicity of any bishop is taken to be the policy of the whole church. To judge from the coverage of the last few months, you would think that in 1970 an Irish orphanage was a more terrible place than a Romanian one. This is clearly absurd, but it is an absurdity that arises naturally from the way that the Catholic church is taken to be a single moral entity in which every part is responsible for the crimes of every other part, and all is centrally directed by the pope. The Catholic church is certainly the world's oldest living bureaucracy. The Vatican departments are still known by the name of their equivalents in the early years of the Byzantine empire. • Oops, we forgot Jesus's women | Stephen Tomkins
The pope's new book, The Friends of Jesus, doesn't mention any of his female associates. It's a telling omissionWas it a hilarious howler or does he simply not like women? The pope's new children's book, The Friends of Jesus, tells the stories of 14 of Jesus's closest friends, but omitted to include any women, despite Jesus's celebrated friendship with several of the less Catholic sex, especially Mary Magdalene. On the plus side, there is something refreshing about the Vatican's attitude to PR and spin, which is either that they are the machinations of Beelzebub, or they simply haven't heard of them yet. You can't imagine the head of any other west European state publishing a book without teams of Malcolm Tuckers scribbling all over it in red marker pens to bring it on-message.Benedict may not be a law unto himself exactly, but he clearly doesn't have his work shredded by a filter of tick boxes. One of the many benefits of not needing anyone's votes ever again. We saw the same thing earlier this year when the Vatican newspaper published a list of the 10 greatest albums ever, all long hair and guitar solos. No inclusivity, no internationalism, no coolness, and outside of Fleetwood Mac, what do you know, not a single woman. It was clearly not a PR exercise, just a bunch of stuff that some old duffer in the Vatican actually liked. But when you get past the retro charm of Rome's attitude to inclusion, it reminds you that there was and is a point to political correctness, which is that it discourages people from being ignorant idiots. Musical lists are a harmless enough pursuit, but the attitudes of world religions to sex and the sexes is rather less harmless. Top 10 albums are one thing, but when Rome compiles lists of the top one sex, the exclusion bites rather deeper.Inclusi 法王の新しい本は、友達イエスの、いずれかの彼の女性の仲間の言及していない

    • Enter the pope, to a clash of news agendas
TV coverage of the pope's visit will have to tread a fine line between the demands of the pews and the newsOne of my childhood TV memories is from the coverage of President Nixon's 1969 visit to Britain: an image of a shadowy Richard Nixon adjusting his tie as he was glimpsed through the oval door-window of Airforce One.At that time, it was common for the BBC to clear the schedules for the arrivals, speeches and departures of foreign heads of state. That convention has largely lapsed, although a Clinton, Obama or Bush can command long stretches on the 24-hour news channels. Now, the only foreign leader who can expect to kick out property and game shows when his jet lands here is the star of The Pope's Visit, which claims many hours on BBC1 and BBC2 next week. There's another parallel with that presidential drop-in: as Nixon was a controversial figure, footage shows a large police presence, aimed at preventing protests. The tension between two genres of television – ceremonial and journalistic – became so marked that the BBC made an official apology for acerbic commentary by the young David Dimbleby. That potential clash of agendas will be present again during Benedict XVI's trip: the pressure, in this case, between the demands of the pews and of the news. Although Pope John Paul II came to Britain in controversial circumstances (Britain was at war with Argentina over the Falklands), he did not risk protests against his presence. But anger over the Vatican's handling of clerical abuse scandals means the traditional model for covering state visits – pomp and circumspection – will be severely tested. Acknowledging this, the BBC has unusually scheduled two critical warm-up documentaries: Monday's Panorama: What The Pope Knew and Wednesday's Benedict: Trials of a Pope. Museum named after 16th-century astronomer to display fingers removed from corpse by admirersTwo of Galileo's fingers, removed from his corpse by admirers in the 18th century, have gone on display in a Florence museum now named after the astronomer. The Museum of the History of Science had shut down for two years for renovations. It reopened on Tuesday, calling itself the Galileo Museum.Last year, the museum director announced that the thumb and middle finger from Galileo's right hand had turned up at an auction and were recognised as being the fingers of the scientist, who died in 1642. The fingers are now displayed in slender, glass cases. Also on display is his tooth. A third finger was already in the museum. In 1737, admirers of Galileo Galilei removed the three fingers, plus the tooth and a vertebra, from his body as it was being moved from a storage place to a monumental tomb – opposite that of Michelangelo, in Santa Croce Basilica in Florence. The vertebra is kept at the University of Padua, where Galileo taught for many years. The tooth, thumb and middle finger were held in a container passed from generation to generation in the same family, but in the early 20th century all traces of the relics disappeared. The container turned up at auction late last year, and detailed historical documents and the family's own records helped experts to identify them, according to museum officials.A wooden bust of Galileo tops the container in which the relics had long been kept.Visitors can also view what the museum says are the only surviving instruments designed and built by Galileo, including two telescopes and a lens he used to discover Jupiter's moons. The Vatican condemned Galileo for contradicting church teaching, which held at the time that the Earth, not the sun, was the c

    • Papal visit: Bad tripper, good trip | Editorial
There are powerful arguments against Benedict XVI's visit – but the head of the Catholic church is a force that cannot be ignoredThe Vatican is no ordinary state, and the pope's trip to Britain this month will be no ordinary state visit. No other leader who comes to these shores takes time out between the official meetings and dinners to conduct a beatification, as Benedict XVI plans to do. None, probably not even the president of the United States, would expect to draw the same crowds, attract the same adulation – or stir the same resentment. It will be a big deal. The gathering storm over the cost of £10m or so to the taxpayer needs to be placed in that context. Proselytising atheists are encouraging public resentment against the expense of policing the pope's visit, and yet the same gang are inflaming these costs by suggesting that they will try to arrest him. The financial argument is a distraction, a mere veil for deeply held feelings about whether or not it is right for Whitehall to roll out the red carpet for the world's greatest theocrat. The moral case against Benedict is powerful – and persuasive. For all the admirable work against poverty that Roman Catholicism inspires around the world, the church directly aggravates the plight of vulnerable people. It rails against IVF giving children to the childless, against stem-cell research giving hope to the sick, and against the use of condoms – even as a means of preventing the spread of HIV. Its rigid views on homosexuality and the role of women are not unique in world religion, or even within Christianity, but the extent of child abuse for which its priests have been responsible has been shocking, as has its tendency to close ranks in response to the scandal. The other is less well known: it is Francis Campbell, the British ambassador to the Vatican who was one of Blair's favourite officials in Downing Street. The former prime minister, who is planning to expand his faith organisation across the US, recalls his incredulous response when officials told him that it would not be possible to appoint Campbell as ambassador to the Holy See because he is, er, a Catholic.Campbell, 39, is from Northern Ireland and worked as Blair's private secretary between 2001-03 before leaving to work as a diplomat and then for Amnesty International after feeling uncomfortable about the Iraq war. He was appointed ambassador to the Vatican in 2005 after an open competition. This is what the former prime minister told a BBC One documentary about Campbell that has been aired in Northern Ireland and is still available on the iPlayer:One of the funny things about the Yes, Prime Minister show is that if you have actually done the job you realise it is parody but, my goodness, it is parody close to the truth. One of the great Sir Humphrey moments was when the ambassadorship to the Holy See became vacant.Blair recalls the following conversation with officials:TB: Well, Francis would be a great person to do that.Official: Well, I don't know whether you know this prime minister but actually we don't really have this open to Catholics.TB: Sorry, how do you mean? We're talking about the Vatican.Official: Yes I know, not a Catholic there.TB: It's the Vatican. I mean are we talking about the same thing? • The Catholic church's gender delusion | Joanna Moorhead
If the church had women in senior roles, I feel sure it would have avoided this crisisHow, asked a friend the other day, can you still be a Catholic? You call yourself a feminist – but look at this organisation you're part of: it has to be one of the most outrageously sexist institutions on the planet. Not only do women have no equality, there's not even a real movement towards genuine equality. Women in your church have no voice, no influence and no political clout whatsoever. He was, of course, right: with each day that goes by, it seems to get harder to defend my decision to hang on as a churchgoing Catholic. For the last 20 years I've tried, through my work as a journalist both inside and outside the church, to argue for a greater and more equal role for women. Over the same period, women's rights as an issue seems to have all but disappeared – partly because there hasn't been enough will at the top (the present pope did say in 2007 that there should be more women in positions of power – but we're still waiting); and partly because, set against almost any other institution you could name, its stance on women seems more out of date and out of touch than ever.Despite Benedict's pledge, there is still only one woman, a Salesian nun, in a senior post in the Curia, or Vatican civil service (Sister Enrica Rosanna, a junior minister). Any woman stalking the corridors of power in Rome is likely to be there because of her ability at shorthand or deftness with a cappuccino machine. All of which is why I feel – at a parish and institutional level – as if I'm in a time warp. My church is stuck in the 1950s, in a world where it is perfectly all right for men to decide what is best for the whole community without any need to consult its majority – its women. In the decades since th

    • Ann Widdecombe is not cut out to be Vatican ambassador | Andrew Brown
Making Ann Widdecombe our woman at the Vatican would be a diplomatic disasterIf Ann Widdecombe is really a serious candidate as the next British ambassador to the Vatican, should we next expect the appointment of Melanie Phillips as ambassador to Washington? They are not as different as they may seem – both of them intelligent and energetic women, wildly out of step with majority British beliefs on the things they really care about, and neither known ever to express someone else's opinion. These are qualities that make for good columnists, but the role of a diplomat is a little different. The British ambassador to the Holy See is someone whose job is to understand and mutually interpret the attitudes of the Vatican and the British government and to broaden their mutual sympathy. I can't easily imagine Widdecombe expressing anyone else's opinions, yet that is one of the central skills of diplomacy. Purely as a piece of symbolism, there is something in this appointment to upset most people. For the Vatican, there is the fact of a woman who won't hesitate to tell them what to do; but she won't, when she does so, be representing any significant strand of British opinion. Since she left the Church of England in principled disagreement over women priests, she clearly represents a minority opinion among British Christians. Her contempt for Anglicanism doesn't really fit her to explain the religious landscape of this country. For secularists she is anyway anathema, rather like the post she is proposed to fill. Within the Catholic church, as a prominent straight single lay conservative, she forms part of a minority of, oh, about two. She is certainly not the candidate of the Bishops' conference, but she has also been attacked by the conservative Damian Thompson, who calls her th

    • Timothy Radcliffe on the crisis | Andrew Brown
More Catholic thoughts on the abuse crisis, from the admirable Dominican Timothy RadcliffeAlso this morning, Timothy Radcliffe writes in the Tablet on why he is still a Catholic. He is one of the most personally impressive Christians I have ever known; I don't like to write about that sort of thing partly because of an old joke which says that the superego is that part of the personality dissolved by alcohol. Well, goodness is that part of the personality which dissolved in journalism and any attempt to describe or testify to it results in absurdity or worse – cf Malcolm Muggeridge. However, I listen carefully to anything Timothy Radcliffe has to say, and his defence of the Vatican is interesting as well as well-informed: It is generally imagined that the Vatican is a vast and efficient organisation. In fact it is tiny. The CDF only employs 45 people, dealing with doctrinal and disciplinary issues for a Church which has 1.3 billion members, 17 per cent of the world's population, and some 400,000 priests. When I dealt with the CDF as Master of the Dominican Order, it was obvious that they were struggling to cope. Documents slipped through the cracks. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger lamented to me that the staff was simply too small for the job.People are furious with the Vatican's failure to open up its files and offer a clear explanation of what happened. Why is it so secretive? Angry and hurt Catholics feel a right to transparent government. I agree. But we must, in justice, understand why the Vatican is so self-protective. There were more martyrs in the twentieth century than in all the previous centuries combined. Bishops and priests, Religious and laity were assassinated in Western Europe, in Soviet countries, in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Many Catholics still s 立派なドミニカ共和国ティモシーRadcliffeAlsoから虐待の危機に関するさらに詳しいカトリック考え、今朝、ティモシーラドクリフは、タブレットで、彼はまだカトリック理由に書き込みます

    • The Catholic church should free its priests from celibacy | Editorial
Pope Benedict XVI needs to break with tradition and allow priests to marrySpare a thought for the typical Catholic priest. His image has been blackened by successive child abuse scandals, first in Ireland and America, now in Germany, Holland and Italy. His vocation is vanishing – only seven men were ordained in England and Wales last year – and as a result, his work-load has multiplied. With several parishes to tend, his isolation grows. Hardly the kind of vibrant and healthy culture to inspire men with the strength to deal with society's ills.Clearly this is unsustainable. The church needs to grapple with the issue at the heart of its scandals: sex. Rome must review its position on celibacy and an all-male priesthood. When a priest is locked into a solitary lifestyle as part of his contract with his church, rather than with his God, resentment will surely follow. In a lonely and sometimes hostile environment, that resentment will fester. It is now an open secret that many priests have live-in lovers, with parishioners sympathetically keeping quiet. Priests involved in homosexual relations have been more covert, but anonymous polls have repeatedly showed that homosexuality is common among the clergy. These shadow-lives need to be allowed into the open. There is now hope that they will. The arch-traditionalist cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna is calling for an urgent examination of the celibate priesthood. The issue of women priests should also get an airing. As we report today, the Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, has published an analysis that links systemic cover-up of scandal to the dearth of women in the hierarchy. Allowing women priests, as the Church of England has done for over 15 years, would blow open the doors to an establishment canthat, in its ローマ教皇ベネディクト16世の伝統を打破し、祭司は、典型的なカトリックの司祭のことを考えmarrySpareすることが必要です
