- The Last Exorcism poster banned
ASA says it received complaints that the promotional images showed a girl who appeared to have suffered a sexual assaultThe Advertising Standards Authority has banned a graphic poster for the Eli Roth-produced horror film The Last Exorcism following complaints that it was distressing and unsuitable for public display. One promotional display for the film featured a young woman doubled over backwards with her dress covered in blood, while another showed her dishevelled and filthy in the top corner of a room. The movie, which is directed by Daniel Stamm and stars Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell, depicts a faithless evangelical minister who agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew, only to discover that this time, the subject may be genuinely possessed. It was released here in September. The ASA said most complainants found the images promoting the 15-rated film offensive, distressing and unsuitable for public display because the girl appeared to have suffered a sexual assault. The images appeared on buses and in the Cineworld's cinema chain's Unlimited film magazine. There was concern that the posters were likely to upset children because some posters were placed near schools and because the magazine was freely available. The film's distributor, Optimum Releasing, said it did not intend the posters to cause distress and had instructed its media agency to remove any ads displayed near schools once it learned of the complaints. The ASA ruled that the first ad was likely to cause offence and distress and agreed that the image of the young girl covered in blood was unsuitable to be seen by children. However, it said that because young children visiting the cinema were likely to be accompanied by an adult to see a 15-rated film, they were unlikely to see and ASAは、それがPR用の画像は、性的assaultThe広告標準局は、それが悲惨とパブリックディスプレイには不適であった苦情を次のイーライロスで生産ホラー映画の最後に悪魔払いのためのグラフィックポスターを禁止されている苦しんでいるように見えた女の子を示したの苦情を受けているフィルムの一つのプロモーションの表示は、別の彼女の乱れと不潔な部屋の上隅で示した中に若い女性が、後方に血だらけ彼女のドレスで倍増して紹介
- Amanda Knox appeals slander conviction in Meredith Kercher case
American student jailed but later cleared of Briton's murder in Italy says police made her wrongly implicate Patrick LumumbaAmanda Knox, the American woman cleared in October 2011 of murder by an Italian court, has asked an appeals court there to overturn her slander conviction as well.Knox family spokesman David Marriott said it was not immediately clear when the appeals court, based in Perugia, would consider that appeal or issue a ruling. He said the appeal was filed with the court on Monday morning by Italian lawyers for Knox, who remains in the US.The slander conviction stems from statements Knox made under police questioning in 2007 that falsely implicated bar owner Patrick Lumumba in the murder of her British housemate, Meredith Kercher. Knox, 24, later told the court she was pressured by police during a lengthy interrogation to accuse Lumumba. Lumumba was arrested in Kercher's murder and jailed for two weeks but ultimately cleared of involvement. He sued Knox for slander. An Italian court in October overturned Knox's 2009 conviction for murdering Kercher, 21, a brutal crime that prosecutors said was committed during a drug-fuelled sexual assault. Also cleared was Knox's boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, leaving Ivorian drifter Rudy Guede as the only person convicted in a killing that investigators believe was carried out by more than one person. Kercher's half-naked body was found with more than 40 stab wounds and a deep gash to the throat in the apartment she shared with Knox in Perugia. Knox, a former University of Washington student, is back living in Seattle where she has largely avoided the public eye.Amanda KnoxMeredith KercherRaffaele SollecitoUnited Statesguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - Letters: Strikes, marches and occupations
As students, we support workers and trade unionists in going ahead with their strike action on 30 November. Next Wednesday, on 9 November, students will be marching in London against the government's higher education white paper, fighting for their right to live in a world where education is a public service, free and accessible to all, and pensions, decent housing, jobs and benefits are not a thing of the past. Within the government's miserable compromise to the TUC was an attempt to generationally divide the anti-cuts movement: we would draw little comfort from the abolition of decent pensions as most of our members are turning 30. Students and workers must be willing to fight, united, for every inch of the welfare state, and not be swayed by the temptation of tame compromise.
This Company gig is kicking my arse. Soo proud of all involved. But I forgot how exhausting it is! ...

That's saying something from one the busiest and most energetic performers around. But a YouTube clip of a documentary made about the original production in 1970 might explain why this show is little above average in demand. Harris will be playing bachelor Bobby, the show's centerpiece around which five couples' stories revolve. One video review of Sondheim's music and George Furth's book said "The choral complexity of 'Company' brilliantly sets the stage for Bobby's emotional claustrophobia, and from there, it's one nugget of musical genius after another." _NULL_

- Old Bailey bomber charged over murder of British soldiers
Marian Price is alleged to have supplied mobile phone to gang who shot dead soldiers at Massereene barracksThe Old Bailey bomber and former IRA hunger striker Marian Price has been charged in connection with the murders of two British soldiers who were shot hours before they were due to leave Northern Ireland for Afghanistan.Price has been charged with providing property for the purposes of terrorism. It is understood that she is alleged to have provided a mobile phone to the gang responsible for the killings.Price, 57, who is in custody following the revocation of her release on licence, had been expected to appear before Belfast magistrates court for a preliminary inquiry on Friday. She was not produced after it emerged that her defence team wanted to cross-examine three witnesses, including two senior detectives. A date for the day-long committal hearing is expected to be fixed next month.Peter Corrigan, Price's lawyer, said she was first questioned 18 months ago about allegations of supplying a phone. He said a legal bid would be made to have the case against her thrown out as an abuse of process. The charge relates to the murders of Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey at Massereene barracks in Antrim in March 2009.The two soldiers were shot outside their base as they collected a pizza delivery. They were about to take a flight to Afghanistan and were already wearing desert fatigues. Two men, including the prominent Lurgan republican Colin Duffy, are due to stand trial accused of their murders later this year.Price, who is also known by her married name Marian McGlinchy, was jailed along with her sister Dolours and the current Sinn Fein minister Gerry Kelly for their roles in the IRA bombing of the Old Bailey in 1973. - Lib Dem donor on the run forced to surrender false passport
Michael Brown, the conman who gave the Lib Dems £2.4m, has passport seized after business dispute in Dominican RepublicThe Liberal Democrats' most generous donor, who is on the run from the British authorities, has been forced to give up the passport he used to escape from Britain.Michael Brown, who gave the party £2.4m before being sentenced in absentia to seven years' imprisonment for theft , has been hiding in the Dominican Republic for three years using documents issued in the name of Darren Patrick Nally. It can be disclosed that the passport is being held by the district attorney's office in the country's capital, Santo Domingo, following a dispute over an oil deal. Bank accounts in the name of Nally have also been frozen. The Guardian revealed last weekend that Brown had been hiding under his false name in Punta Cana, a resort in the east of the Dominican Republic. It means his options, as a man on the run from Britain and in need of a useable passport, have been curtailed. He cannot easily move to another country without it.Police are urgently seeking ways to bring Brown back to Britain, but their task is complicated because there is no extradition treaty between the two countries. The Liberal Democrats are continuing to refuse demands that they should return Brown's gift, given by Brown's company 5th Avenue Partners in the weeks before the 2005 general election. British courts were told that his company was wholly fraudulent and the gift was given to convince victims that he was a legitimate businessman.Brown's false passport is being held because of a dispute with another company over an oil deal.He established a company called Van Der Lay Holdings in November 2008 in the Dominican Republic, using the name of Nally. This company then approached a Dominican Republic _NULL_

- Botox, Big Macs and Mayo | Henry McDonald
One town in the west of Ireland is booming thanks to Botox while another hopes McDonald's can alleviate its economic miseryLast week I travelled back in time. Specifically to a land that the rest of Ireland has almost forgotten ever existed; to an Arcadia where there is prosperity, jobs, optimism, hope. But this is not a long lost idyll and I didn't need a time machine to transport me there. It just took a gruelling four-hour car journey westward to Ireland's Atlantic seaboard, to the home constituency of the Republic's prime minister, Enda Kenny, or more precisely to the town of Westport in County Mayo.Unlike the rest of Ireland this coastal town famous for its tourist attractions appears to be recession-proof. While most of the Republic's high streets are suffering from a collapse in consumer demand and remain in a depressed state Westport last Wednesday seemed to be thriving. My travelling companion and I even had to queue up to be seated in a charming little café in the centre of the town until a table became available. Business was booming – something you cannot say about the retail or catering trade in Dublin or any other urban area at present. But it is not the tourists who are responsible for the Mayo town being fireproofed from the worst ravages of Ireland's recession. The reason for Westport thriving is down to one word: Botox. The anti-ageing, wrinkle busting treatment that is injected into the face is manufactured at the Allergan plant on the edge of the town. Westport is the only place on the planet where Botox is made and exported all over the world.Last month the company announced it was expanding its workforce to 1,000 and building a new research and development centre within sight of Ireland's holiest mountain Croagh Patrick. The knock-on effects of this in null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - From the archive, 1 September 1888: Clanricarde estate resumes evictions
Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 1 September 1888DUBLIN, FRIDAY NIGHTThe evictions on the estate of the Marquis of Clanricarde were resumed to-day near Woodford, county Galway. Forces for the protection of the Sheriff and emergency men consisted, as on the previous days, of 180 men of the Scotch Fusiliers and 200 police, all in charge of Divisional Magistrate Byrne. A start was made early from Clondergoff Castle, the headquarters, and progress was made in the direction of Clonmooney, which is a considerable distance. The approach of the evictors was heralded all over the countryside by the blowing of horns and ringing of chapel bells. The march to the scene of action occupied until some time after midday. Meanwhile the country people gathered in a large crowd and followed. The first house visited was that of Patrick Kelly, of Clonmooney. The dwelling was barricaded, and when the emergency men approached they were met by showers of hot water thrown from the inside. The bailiffs and some constables came in for some of the showers, but as the water had not been heated to scalding point they were not injured. After some time the door was broken in, and the emergency men entered. The defenders of the house were then found to be four young girls, three of them the daughters of the tenant, and the fourth a girl named Annie Porter. They were taken into custody and marched off to Clondergoff Castle. It was stated that the great part of the holding, which is very poor land, had been reclaimed by the tenant. The rent was £10 a year and the poor-law valuation £11.A move was then made for Derrygill, some distance away, and after fording a small river John Fahy's house was reached. The agent offered to make the tenant a bailiff on the estate, but this offer was refus _NULL_
- David Grimes obituary
Our brother, David Grimes, who has died aged 60 from sporadic CJD, the neurodegenerative condition, was reader in African Meteorology at the University of Reading. In 1990 he joined the Tamsat (Tropical Applications of Meteorology using Satellite and other data) group, and led it from 1996, developing a unique rainfall database which is used extensively by African weather services. Its immense significance for vulnerable communities in African countries was recognised in 2010 by the Royal Meteorological Society, which gave Tamsat the IBM Award for Meteorological Innovation that Matters. Among many other academic achievements, David made a substantial contribution to the Open University science foundation course – gateway to a qualification for those new to science.Born in Consett, Co Durham, David attended St Bede's secondary school in Lanchester, where he showed all-round talents: scientific, artistic, literary and linguistic. While he chose to pursue a career in science, his passion and flair for the arts were interwoven throughout all aspects of his life and he was fluent in both Spanish and German. He married Trish in 1997 and, although they subsequently divorced, they supported each other in bringing up their son Patrick, now 14, who was the centre of David's life and of whom he was immeasurably proud.A profound commitment to social justice not only influenced David's academic work, but led to his tireless support for political groups and campaigning organisations which promote equitable development. He was passionate about the development of meteorological capacity among African scientists, and frequently expressed his exasperation with the bureaucratic barriers which prevented talented African students from obtaining postgraduate study visas.David's students have null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Shadow chancellor says emergency legislation will limit the amount the UK will lend to IrelandThe chancellor, George Osborne, will set out emergency legislation tomorrow setting a cap on a planned UK loan to help bail out Ireland – with a facility to increase that loan only subject to a further vote in the Commons. The legislation will last five years and then fall, he told the Treasury select committee. He said the interest rate on the £3.25bn loan, part of a wider £7bn European-wide package of help to the beleaguered Irish economy – is still subject to negotiation, partly since some of the international components have not yet been concluded. The interest rate will be within the rates set by the IMF and the European commission, he said.George OsborneEconomic policyIrelandBankingPatrick Wintourguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Guardipedia – we answer your questions during Wikipedia blackout - live
Suffering from Wikipedia withdrawal? Patrick Kingsley has a stack of volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Who's Who and is ready to answer your questions11.18am: So this is what the 90s was like! People must have had very sore thumbs.Anyway, exciting news: I have my first question. My colleague Andrew Gilchrist wants to know about a book called the King of the Gypsies, which is apparently by a bare-knuckle fighter called Bartley Gorman. Now for the crushing disappointment. Andrew, there is absolutely no reference to Bartley Gorman in Britannica, or in this dusty thing called the Biographical Dictionary I found in that library place upstairs.Sorry to let you down. And please forgive the time it's taken to get back to you. These books don't have hyperlinks. Weird.11.01am: This really is technological doomsday. Not only is Wikipedia down, but something seems to be wrong with our comments system. We're working on it, but in the meantime, tweet your pre-1989 factual questions to either @Guardian or @PatrickKingsley.Meanwhile: here's a great animation explaining what Wikipedia are protesting about.10.48am: It's the day the free world (well, students, journalists, and PR consultants) has been dreading: Wikipedia is down, in protest at proposed US anti-piracy legislation, and it'll stay that way until 5pm today. But fear not! Guardipedia is here to help. One of my senior colleagues has informed me of something called the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which seems to be some sort of paper book (I know!) containing all sorts of facts. The good news is, I've fetched it from the library upstairs - all 29 volumes of it - and I'm going to use it to answer any factual questions you throw at me via Twitter (@Guardian) or the comments section below. The bad news is it was published in 19 null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Guardian Election Daily: George Galloway targets another East End victory
The appearance of George Galloway on the ballot paper in Limehouse and Poplar has opened up the race in what was once a safe Labour seat. The Respect MP has moved from his former constituency, Bethnal Green and Bow, to fight a seat, with new boundaries, that encompasses the gleaming wealth of the banks in Canary Wharf and some of Britain's poorest council estates.Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick is the incumbent (and still the favourite), but with Galloway potentially splitting the vote for the left, the Conservative candidate Tim Archer is confident he can claim the seat for the Tories for the first time ever.Meanwhile, back in Westminster, Andrew Sparrow has been following the national campaign, where Nick Clegg has been talking about who he would side with in the event of a hung parliament. And in the highly marginal seat of Perthshire and North Perthshire, Severin Carrell has been finding out whether the Conservatives can pinch their top Scottish target seat from the Scottish National party.Michael WhitePhil MaynardAndrew SparrowSeverin Carrell

The cover story of the current issue of Forbes is on a subject near and dear to my heart: how the digital age is changing reputation control. Whereas I tend to focus on individual's struggles and successes in controlling how they're perceived in the age of social media and Google, David Kirkpatrick explores how big companies are grappling with it, suggesting that just as social media contributed to challenging regimes in the Arab Spring (and, though unmentioned, London), it could end up toppling a CEO. _NULL_

After last week's excursion onto the cricket pitch, we return to literary fiction this week to meet up with two leading novelists. As the fifth and final instalment of Edward St Aubyn's sequence of novels about his alter ego Patrick Melrose hits the bookshops, he joins the podcast to discuss families and funerals. We discuss the difference between memoir and biographical fiction, what it feels like to wave goodbye to a character he has lived with for two decades, and how drugs helped both him and his character to survive. - Letters: Car park cowboys
Grahame Rose (Letters, 20 August) is right to say that parking charge notices imposed by private car park operators are legally unenforceable. He is wrong, however, to suggest that the law should be tightened up in the contractors' favour. Many private operators already employ very dubious tactics to extort money from law-abiding citizens. They impose huge fines on drivers for the most marginal offences, supplying no evidence and providing no independent channel of appeal. Those who do not pay can expect to receive a stream of intimidating letters, demanding ever higher sums of money and threatening court action or visits from bailiffs. These people are simply scammers who operate through harassment and fear. What they would do with the law on their side doesn't bear thinking about. The government should change the law, yes – but only to prevent the DVLA freely selling drivers' details to cowboy operators who demand money.Edmund PatrickGodalming, SurreyTransportRoad transportguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Cambridge university students in scuffles with police at demonstration
Occupation of university and local council offices stagedPolice were involved in scuffles with students who staged an occupation of council offices in Cambridge last night, sparking a standoff which lasted for more than an hour. The students have also been occupying a room in the university's main administrative building since last Friday as part of a campaign against the rise in tuition fees.Although they vacated the council offices, the students have pledged to stay at the university until Sunday unless Cambridge officials agree to discuss their demands. At the request of the university management, senior representatives of the police, fire service and the university yesterday evening entered the Combination Room at the Old Schools site and told occupiers they should leave the building. Several more policemen blockaded the entrance to the building and prevented supporters of the occupation from entering for a period of time. The protestors, who are campaigning against the scrapping of EMA and the rise in tuition fees, say they would like to remain in occupation until Sunday - and are unlikely to leave unless the university officials meet with them to discuss their demands.A university spokesman said no discussion would take place until the occupation had ended. But he added there were no immediate plans to evict the protestors forcibly, even though a possession order has been in place since Monday.Tuition feesHigher educationStudentsUniversity of CambridgeProtestPolicePatrick Kingsleyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Ivory Coast's illegitimate president must go | Patrick Achi
Laurent Gbagbo has been voted out. Events in Egypt and Tunisia must show his African supporters the world has changedThere are few who would not argue that when the clear will of the people has been expressed at the ballot box and an incumbent president has been defeated, it is time for him to make way.On 28 November last year, Laurent Gbagbo, until that point the president of Ivory Coast, was decisively defeated in the second round of the presidential election. The result, announced by the independent electoral commission and verified by the international community and its observers, had Gbagbo trailing by nearly 10 percentage points.Since that time Gbagbo has refused to stand down and allow our new, democratically elected administration to take charge. Control of the army and the national broadcaster has enabled him to cling to power, and more than 400 civilians have been killed in street crackdowns as they demonstrated in support of their democratic rights. Gbagbo's militias have encircled the hotel where President Alassane Ouattara's new administration is being protected by UN forces. Gbagbo has used public funds to buy the support of American political lobbyists to try to build support across the world for his untenable position. And he has threatened to restart civil war and plunge Ivory Coast back into the years of conflict the recent election result resolutely rejected.Yet there are splinters in the African response to Gbagbo. A small number of African leaders have continued to publicly support him, and some even fund him, in total disregard for the democratic will of the Ivorian people. To those leaders who continue to assist in denying Ivorians what they have clearly expressed, this must be said: in the months since the election the world has changed, dramatic ローランGbagboアウト選ばれています

- Put race equality in mental health back on the agenda | Patrick Vernon
Key issues are being overlooked in the new mental health strategy, says Patrick Vernon of the Afiya TrustRacism in mental health institutions and wider society no longer appears to be an issue if the coalition government is to be believed. The impression given is that we are moving to a post-racial big society where 'state multiculturalism' is expunged from British values and public consciousness. This move is reflected in 'No health without mental health', the new cross-governmental mental health strategy. This builds on some of the aspirations of its predecessor New Horizons developed by New Labour in its last 12 months in power. At face value we recognise the new strategy's important focus on children and young people, anti-discrimination campaigns and the ongoing commitment to psychological therapies. However, the new strategy fails to address key issues around race and mental health, typified by the absence of any black and minority ethnic (BME) and service user-led organisations in its 'A call to action' document. In the strategy, the government talks about parity of esteem in recognition that mental health services should be on the same level as other major conditions such as cancer and stroke. But what we are left with is a disparity of esteem for BME communities. The overwhelming evidence, detention rates of up to 63.6% and higher than average rates of supervised community treatment orders, is clear. Yet no attempt at dialogue is being made to take forward the knowledge and experience of BME service users, practitioners and organisations on the need to develop culturally sensitive services.BME communities, particularly African, Caribbean and Muslim people, are still perceived either as a menace to society or victims of their own misfortune in terms of culture, fait 主要な問題は、新しい精神保健戦略の中で見過ごされているが、精神保健機関やより広い社会の中でAfiyaのTrustRacismのPatrick Vernonさんは、もはや連立政府は信じられるとされている場合の問題と思われると言います

- Journalist wanted in Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder case to be extradited
Irish court rules Ian Bailey should be handed over to French authorities for questioning over film-maker's death 14 years agoIreland's high court has ruled that an English former journalist can be extradited to France for questioning over the murder of film-maker Sophie Toscan du Plantier. The judgment was delivered by Mr Justice Michael Peart at the High Court in Dublin on Friday.Ian Bailey is wanted by authorities in Paris over the killing of Toscan du Plantier, who was beaten to death in Cork 14 years ago.The 39-year-old Frenchwoman was found dead outside her holiday home at Toormore, near Schull in west Cork, two days before Christmas 1996. Bailey, 53, was arrested twice over her murder but was never charged. He denies any involvement in her death.Under French law, authorities can investigate the suspicious death of a citizen abroad but they cannot compel witnesses to go to Paris for questioning.Investigating magistrate Patrick Gachon was appointed by officials in Paris to conduct an inquiry into Toscan du Plantier's death after the director of public prosecutions said nobody would be charged. A European arrest warrant was issued for Bailey.During a two-day hearing in December, Martin Giblin, senior counsel for Bailey, argued that there had been no new evidence against his client to support an extradition. He also maintained that the application was an insult to the Irish state and the country's director of public prosecutions.Bailey, who was born in Manchester, is a law graduate and lives in Schull with his partner. He worked as a journalist in Gloucester and Cheltenham before moving to Ireland in 1991.IrelandCrimeFranceHenry McDonaldguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Two of Gonzalez's co-defendants are scheduled to testify against him, Eddins said. But none of the couple's young children, who were home the night of the killings, are expected to testify about what they saw.Prosecutors say the couple were killed during a botched attempt to steal a safe. Their children were not physically harmed in the attack.Seven co-defendants have been charged with first-degree murder. Several could testify against Gonzalez to name him as the man who fatally shot Byrd Billings, who owned a company that financed used car purchases, and his wife. The Billings's were fatally shot in their bedroom. A safe that was taken from the family's home contained nothing of value, but a second safe that wasn't stolen had $164,000 (£104,000) in cash, court records show.United StatesGun crimeguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Police investigate gunman's death in Florida town of Celebration just days after its first ever murderAuthorities are investigating a violent death in the central Florida town built by Disney, just days after the first murder in its 14-year history was reported.A man apparently killed himself after shooting at police in Celebration.Craig Foushee, 52, barricaded himself in a house for more than 14 hours, according to Osceola county sheriff's office. Police found him dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Twis Lizasuain, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, said there was no connection with Foushee's death and that of Matteo Patrick Giovanditto, who was found dead in a housing complex on Tuesday. Giovanditto's murder was the first ever reported in Disney's master-planned community for 11,000 residents.Giovanditto lived alone and had been killed over Thanksgiving weekend, authorities said.Neighbours hadn't seen him for days, so they filed a missing person's report, then went into his apartment a day later and found him.FloridaUnited StatesGun crimeguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Five Stocks For St. Patrick's Day 2011
Many may not believe St. Patrick's Day is comparable to consumer-driven holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas as far as the stock market is concerned, but you may be surprised to learn just what kind of opportunities this Irish celebration presents. While it is true that there is very little emphasis on gift-giving or large-scale consumer purchases during this time, there are nevertheless some trading ideas for this holiday, as with most holidays. As a result, we decided to compile a list of five stocks that you will want to keep your eyes on in the days leading up to, and following, St. Patrick's Day 2011.

In a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Arbitration Statement of Claim filed in September 2009, Claimant Gilbert Kuta asserted numerous causes of action relating to what appears to have been a very acrimonious end to his employment with RBC Capital Markets LLC. Among Claimant Kuta’s allegations were fraud, breach of contract, and defamation. Claimant Kuta sought $37,760,232.00 in damages and attorney's fees; and he requested an expungement of his Central Registration Depository (the "CRD") Form U5. - Children's lives at risk from vaccine funding gap | Patrick Watt
As Sierra Leone rolls out the first vaccination programme against pneumonia, a report by Save the Children finds that further investment is needed from donors to bridge funding gap for vaccinesOver the coming days in Sierra Leone, motorbikes and vans will be loaded up with coolboxes before going into the countryside, carrying a new pneumococcal vaccine that has the potential to change the life chances of millions of children. Malaria, HIV and Aids dominate the headlines, but pneumonia kills 1.6 million children a year, making it the second biggest child killer, after neonatal complications and infections. In a world where budget constraints at home have made aid donors wary of new commitments, here is a development good news story. Last year, Sierra Leone lifted official charges for healthcare for mothers and children. Now, it is introducing its first vaccination programme for pneumonia, provided free through the public health system. Kenya, Guyana and Yemen are doing the same. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), the partnership between aid donors and the private sector which is financing this initiative, estimates that globally between 250,000 and 550,000 children's lives could be saved annually through the pneumococcal vaccine. Even at the lower end of this scale, the vaccine could represent a major step forward towards the millennium development goal of a two-thirds reduction in child mortality by 2015.GAVI's track record in reducing the lag between life-saving vaccines being developed and reaching children in developing countries has been impressive. But GAVI also faces a funding shortfall of $3.7bn (£2.3bn) between now and 2015. A pledging meeting in London in June will require some hard decisions to be taken if universal coverage of life-saving

- The victims of government-free Lebanon | Patrick Galey
The general population is used to living without politicians' help – but its most vulnerable members desperately need reformsLebanon once more finds itself without a government following the toppling of its coalition cabinet last week – an event that attracted consternation and speculation the world over. As international observers expressed disquiet at the potential for civil chaos, the collapse was greeted in Beirut with nonchalance rather than celebration or despair. In Lebanon, a country of 18 officially recognised religious sects, decisive and able government has always been something strived for rather than actually implemented. If Lebanese reaction to this seismic event has been subdued, it is because the country has become quite used to living without help from politicians. At street level, little has changed following the implosion of a government that failed time and again to meet the needs of its people. But it spells bad news for some already neglected members of society, whose misery is likely only to increase as the days without government lengthen.By the time the cabinet last met in December, its to-do list – an agenda containing sorely needed reforms and legislation – had swelled to more than 300 items. Included in these were draft laws designed to protect the rights of migrant workers, prisoners, asylum seekers and abused women. Amid all the wrangling about the international tribunal, not one of these items made the grade for discussion.Legislation to increase punishment and accountability for the use of torture during interrogation or detention was overlooked, leaving thousands of inmates in the country's overcrowded prisons facing the routine possibility of mistreatment by guards who are rarely brought to account.
- Singapore's policy keeps drugs at bay | Michael Teo
Many criticise using the death penalty against those in the drug trade, but our strategy has saved thousands from addictionDrug abuse blights modern societies. That is why many governments are focused on tackling addiction, preventing drug-related crimes and ultimately protecting their populations. Singapore's tough stand and use of strict laws and stiff penalties against those involved in the drug trade, including capital punishment, have sometimes come under criticism. The comment by Patrick Gallahue and Rick Lines of the International Harm Reduction Association prompted by the trial of a drug trafficker, Yong Vui Kong, and the imposition of the death penalty on him, is a recent instance.Singapore pursues a comprehensive national strategy to combat the scourge of drugs, comprising a high-profile public education campaign, treatment and rehabilitation of drug offenders, as well as strict laws and stiff penalties against those involved in the drug trade.Public education against drug abuse starts in schools. For abusers, our approach is to try hard to wean them off drugs and deter them from relapsing. They are given two chances in a drug rehabilitation centre. If they go through counselling, kick their drug habit and return to society with useful skills, they will not have any criminal record. Those who are still addicted go to prison, where they are put on general rehabilitation programmes to help them reintegrate into the community.Strong community support against drug abuse has been critical to our fight against drugs. Singapore society resolutely rejects drug abuse. Several voluntary welfare organisations run halfway houses to help recovering addicts adjust back into society. Many employers also come forward to offer reformed drug addicts employment opportunities.Dru 多くの批判者麻薬取引に反対死刑を使用して、しかし、我々の戦略は、現代社会を虐。虫害をaddictionDrugから何千人も保存されています

- More power to conservative Democrats | Michael Tomasky
I was struck by Vicious Misanthrope's little anecdote in the previous thread:Yesterday I went to a couple of my local working-class guys to get them to put Manchin signs up in their yards. They've always supported Joe strongly in the past. Not now. Both gave the same reason---he supported the health care bill, and they are going to be forced to take health insurance or the government will be after them. And there was no use in arguing the point with them unless you just wanted to burn bridges or something stupid.Well, let's see. First of all, if it does end up that these gentlemen have to buy insurance, it seems to me likely there will come a day when they're glad they have it. But one can't really expect them to see that now, I suppose. In the nearer term, there is no denying that Democrats in tough states and districts are running away from healthcare and the bailouts and Obama, and politically they have to. Here we have Jonathan Weisman in today's Wall Street Journal:DOYLESTOWN, Pa.—Rep. Patrick Murphy, a fresh-faced rising Democratic star and loyal backer of President Barack Obama's agenda, is facing the fight of his life in a suburban Philadelphia district Mr. Obama won easily two years ago.Across Pennsylvania, another Democrat, Rep. Jason Altmire, is competing in a district Republican John McCain took by a wide margin. Mr. Altmire is running away with it, by running away from the president. In their contrasting fates lie broader lessons for the coming midterms: Live by the president and you could die by the president. Activists waged campaign of abuse and intimidation against people linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences, court toldFive animal rights activists who waged a campaign of abuse, harassment and blackmail against staff linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences were sentenced to between 15 months and six years in prison today. The campaign included hoax bombs posted to the homes and offices of staff, criminal damage, threats of violence and abusive telephone calls.Sarah Whitehead, 53, Nicole Vosper, 22, Thomas Harris, 27, Jason Mullan, 32, and Nicola Tapping, 29, were all members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac).A sixth member of the conspiracy, Alfie Fitzpatrick, at 21 the youngest member of the group, received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years and was ordered to complete 100 hours of community work. The sentencing hearing at Winchester crown court was told that the six waged a wide-ranging international conspiracy of intimidation against a host of supply companies to force the closure of Cambridge-based HLS, using Shac as a front. Some company directors had leaflets distributed near their home falsely telling neighbours they were convicted paedophiles and others had used tampons sent through the post saying the blood was HIV positive. The activists daubed words such as puppy killer, murderer and scum on the houses, cars and nearby roads of those they targeted. The abuse would only stop when the company issued a capitulation statement on the Shac website and cut links with the lab.The total cost of the damage and increased security to about 40 companies targeted was £12.6m, the court heard. The six were part of a larger conspiracy involving the founder members of Shac, Gregg and Natasha Avery and Heather Nicholson, who used the organisation as a front to intimidate
- How Canada became an open data and data journalism powerhouse
The US and the UK might get all the attention but should we be looking to Canada for innovative open data initiatives?• Apps built with Toronto's dataImagine if you took the historic records of everyone who died in the first world war. Then you matched them to one area to see how it had been affected. Or if you wanted to see if one part of your city had an epidemic of bedbugs. Or if you wanted to find out where the most guns are. This is the work of data journalist Patrick Cain, quietly and methodically producing strikingly interesting maps of his home city of Toronto. It's the pinnacle of what data journalism is supposed to be about. And, if you're looking for innovative data journalism, vast open data resources and the latest open data apps, Canada is a good place to start.Enthralled by open data initiatives around the world, Canadians from Ottowa to Vancouver are embracing spreadsheets as never before – and producing great work which you don't often hear about outside the country.Patrick Cain works by doggedly pursuing datasets, often from official sources which don't want to know – but bolstered by a powerful freedom of information system:If something is uncontroversial (like dog licences by postal code) there are often no issues about releasing it. On the other side, we have the sex offender database, which I've been trying to get access to since the spring in 2008. Sometimes there is ineffective resistance, like the landlord and tenant appeal board that tried to get me to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Mostly I get things in the mail as the law demands … Everybody (including me) likes the rage-against-the-machine stories, but in the majority of cases the system works more or less as intended.Cain is one of the most established of the new breed. - What's all the fuss about Dollywood?
Three teenagers flew there on their own. What's the appeal to young people, exactly?Three Florida minors surprised authorities last week by taking a flight to Nashville without telling their parents. But perhaps what was most startling about their incredible adventure, was that they were trying to get to Dollywood, the Dolly Parton theme park. Liberty Love, who was taken there by her parents when she was 11, explains why it might appeal to young people.Dollywood is a great experience, but it's not somewhere I would choose to fly to with my friends. In fact, unless you're a diehard Dolly Parton fan, it's a slightly odd place to go as a teenager; it's nothing like Legoland. In many ways Dollywood is more like a museum. You see Dolly growing up: there are models of the house she lived in as a child, her school, and where she went to church. It also teaches you about the local way of life. You can see the blacksmith at work, and visit a replica of a classic American diner. It's a lot more beautiful than the average theme park, set in the Great Smoky Mountains and with shops painted in lovely pink and blue pastel shades. There are rollercoasters, but only about 10 of them, and they're all old-fashioned wooden ones.Dollywood is child-friendly, and entertaining, but it's really aimed at fans. You can try on Dolly wigs, see her glittery dresses, and watch interviews with her. And of course sing along to her music – there are loads of live shows and it is always blaring from the speakers. When we went, we saw a lot of older people. There were some teenagers, but they were with their families. If I was flying off somewhere out of the blue, I wouldn't pick Dollywood. I'd go somewhere hot and American – but not totally dedicated to Dolly Parton.Liberty Love was talking to Patrick K 3人のティーンエイジャーが、自分で飛んだ
- Judge jails animal rights arsonist Mel Broughton for 10 years
Jury convicts campaigner protesting against animal testing lab of attacking Oxford University with homemade petrol bombsAn animal rights activist was jailed for 10 years after being found guilty today of planting homemade petrol bombs at Oxford University.Mel Broughton, 49, put the devices under a portable cabin at Templeton College and on the roof of a cricket pavilion at Queen's College. The pavilion device caused damage put at £14,000, but two other bombs failed to go off. Broughton, who spearheaded animal welfare group Speak, was protesting against the building of an animal testing laboratory at Oxford.Judge Patrick Eccles QC sentenced Broughton, of Northampton, to 10 years in jail after the jury found him guilty of conspiracy to commit arson following a four-week retrial at Oxford crown court. Broughton was originally convicted of the offences by a jury in February 2009, and successfully appealed against his conviction in February this year. The Court of Appeal then ordered a retrial. - Phil Kelly
My friend Phil Kelly, who has died aged 59, was an extraordinary and gifted painter. His vibrant canvases have captured the imagination of collectors and supporters worldwide, including the poet Seamus Heaney, for whose wife, Marie, he completed a set of book illustrations, and the chef Rick Stein, for whose Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, Phil created a mural. Although raised in Ireland and England, he had lived in Mexico City since 1989 and became a Mexican citizen in 1999.Born in Dublin, Phil was educated at Rugby school, Warwickshire. He was expelled, and later attended college in Bath, where his artistic talent was immediately recognised. He moved to London, to Whitby, in north Yorkshire, and then to Portugal, subsidising his painting with a variety of occupations. His desire for light and colour took him in 1983 to Mexico City. He arrived with £50 in his pocket and no Spanish. He was on a visit to England in 1985 when an earthquake struck Mexico City, taking close friends and all of his Mexican work. He returned to work and exhibiting in London, but left for Mexico again in 1989, marrying Ruth Munguia, a cultural administrator, the following year. They had two daughters, Ana Elena and Maria José.His career was flourishing and he took up painting full time. Ruth was a major influence in this, organising exhibitions and promoting his work. After the art collector Patrick J Murphy happened upon his exhibition Babel Descifrada (Babel Deciphered), at Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art in 1996, shows followed in Dublin.Wherever Phil lived, there were always the same ingredients that reflected the man: drawings and colour trials taped to walls, good literature, blues or jazz music, wine, excellent food and paint. - Letter: Campus concern
We write to express our continued concern at the behaviour of Sussex University management towards students and staff on campus. Six students face a disciplinary hearing today (18 May) following an occupation of a campus building in protest against plans to make 112 staff redundant. Such protest actions have a long tradition at Sussex. The current management's response demonstrates an unprecedented degree of intolerance and narrow-mindedness with regard to legitimate forms of protest. It is clear that these six students are being victimised in an attempt to intimidate other students away from activism against higher education cuts. These six are being unfairly singled out for the actions of many.We call on those judging the case to ensure that no student is unfairly punished for taking part in legitimate protest.Caroline Lucas MP Green, Brighton Pavilion, Iain Pears Novelist and art historian, Michael Rosen Former children's poet laureate, Sally Hunt UCU general secretary, Tom Hickey UCU national executive, Jim Wolfreys King's College London, Biswadip Dasgupta King's College London, Jan Toporowski Soas, London, Richard Saull Queen Mary's, University of London, Michael Keefer University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Ian Patterson Queens' College, Cambridge, Steven Barfield University of Westminster, Patrick Devine-Wright University of Manchester, Isabelle Fremeaux Birkbeck, University of London, Esther Leslie Birkbeck, University of London, Ross Adamson University of Brighton, Jelena Timotijevic University of Brighton, Tom Wills President, University of Sussex Students' Union, Mark Bergfeld NUS national executive, James Heywood NUS National ExecutiveUniversity of SussexHigher educationUniversity fundingCuts and closuresProtestguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Lim 我々は、学生やスタッフのキャンパスに向かっサセックス大学の管理の動作で私達の継続的な懸念を表明する記述します
- Saving the lives of mothers and babies - did the G8 do enough?
The G8 made maternal and child health its major initiative for this year. It was big on rhetoric - but was the money enough and what will it all mean in the long-run?So what did the G8/G20 achieve? The feel-good note was intended to be the Canadian government's maternal and newborn health initiative. It's been much anticipated, but in the end, what matters from this sort of summit is not the rhetoric but the cash. So was the money enough?Patrick Watt, of Save the Children, says no. This is his verdict below. What do others think? The G8 summit ended with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's announcement of the Muskoka initiative on maternal and child health, promising an additional $5 billion of aid up to 2015. At first glance, the figures sound impressive: it's the job of G8 officials, going by the strange nomenclature of sherpas and yaks, to deliver an eye-catching big number in every summit declaration. But even a cursory examination of what's been pledged shows that it's very far from being the funding breakthrough needed to accelerate progress on maternal and child health. On the generous assumption that everything committed in the statement really is new money, and does materialise, it still only takes the G8 half way to meeting their fair share of the funding gap. The best estimates of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, of which Save the Children is a part, are that the G8 needs to double its bilateral aid in this area from $2 billion a year to $4 billion, with other non-G8 donors and developing countries also needing to step up to the mark. There's the further question of whether everything committed yesterday meets the strict definition of aid for maternal, newborn and child health, as set out by the Countdown group of global health organi G8は今年と子の健康その主要なイニシアチブ母体のために作ら

The general consensus appears to be that hopes of a deal between Labour and the Liberal Democrats are fading.Michael White joins the quest to find out the shape of Britain's next government with the help of the Guardian's political correspondent Allegra Stratton. On hand to offer their views we have former Downing Street insider Lance Price, Julian Astle of the Liberal Democrat think tank CentreForum, and founder of the Open Democracy website Anthony Barnett. Much of the debate and rumour has been originating from Portcullis House – the office complex adjoining parliament. We stake out the area and hear from Labour MPs including Hilary Benn, Austin Mitchell, Jim Fitzpatrick and Steven Pound. - 'It's just a great feeling' – amid Haiti's pain, a rescuer's story
A week after the earthquake devastated Haiti, killing up to 200,000 people, rescuers are, miraculously, still discovering survivors in the rubble. Here Patrick Thomas, a 23-year-old US air force rescue specialist, describes the battle to find and free the livingWe flew in on a C130 just 27 hours after the earthquake and were the first American team on the ground. We've been working around the clock, sleeping in the van between shifts. It's exhausting digging through the the rubble day after day but this is the sort of thing we constantly train for. This is what it's all about. Our team has done a lot of extractions of people trapped in buildings. You find someone and it's just a great feeling. When you start digging to get them out it can seem straightforward, but when you solve one problem, like clearing a piece of debris, you then find two other problems, and on it goes. You think it'll take 20 minutes but it takes five hours. It sounds weird but when a patient is released, and the pressure on their body is relieved, that's often when they pass out, or maybe even die. That's because if a muscle was constricted it burns up energy. Acid builds up and stays in that part of the body. Relieve the pressure and you release the toxins and that can damage the kidneys or heart. You've got to be ready to anticipate that. There was one guy we took out who lost both his legs. Everybody did what they were supposed to do and we flew him to a hospital ship but he still died. Not all our rescues have happy endings. There is tension between the American and French rescue teams, rivalry and political stuff. You could cut it with a knife. But it doesn't interfere with the job, we all get on with it.Right now we're backing up a French and Turkish team which is digging out a woman trapped on 1週間後には、地震、20万人を殺害ハイチ荒廃、救助隊が、奇跡的には、まだがれきの中から生存者を発見している
