Today, to mark the first anniversary of the imprisonment of three prominent human rights defenders from Western Sahara, we are calling on the government to increase diplomatic efforts with Morocco to ensure that the activists receive a free and fair trial. The three – Brahim Dahane, Ali Salem Tamek and Saleh Labihi – have committed no crime. They were arrested by Moroccan police on 8 October 2009 after returning to Casablanca from a visit to the Saharawi refugee camps in the Algerian desert, where tens of thousands have been forced to live since Morocco's unlawful annexation of Western Sahara in 1976. They were accused of treason, a charge punishable by death, and were held without trial. Last month they went before a military tribunal which in turn referred it to the civil court. Few leaders in the region have escaped its heat. Algeria has evacuated more than 3, 800 of its citizens from Libya which has been swept by the two- week protest against Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year rule, state-run APS news agency reported Saturday.

Is the uprising in Tunisia likely to happen in other similar countries? Most remarkably the political pressure has brought with it a more democratic system, albeit with trouble along the way. We ask: how similar are Tunisia's neighbouring countries? I visited the exhibition on images of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Face to Faith, 7 August) at the Quaker Friends House in London on Hiroshima commemoration day (6 August) after attending a moving ceremony that included speeches from a survivor of the city's atomic immolation, former London mayor Ken Livingstone, Labour peace activist MP Jeremy Corbyn, and the CND chair, Dr Kate Hudson. Rowena Loverance is right to draw attention to the searing shock of the trauma represented in the photos as well as the poignancy in the objects recovered from the atomic aftermath. However, I did notice one odd thing in the Quaker exhibition, which also told of the atomic age from the first test explosion, at Socorro in the New Mexico desert in July 1945, to today: it lists Israel as a one of nine nations that have tested nuclear weapons.It is now accepted that Israel has around 200 nuclear warheads, although Tel Aviv declines to confirm its atomic weapons status. But, despite the fact that Israel has undoubtedly received considerable atomic assistance from the US, as is told in detail in Seymour Hersh's excellent 1991 expose, The Samson Option, there are no published details of Israel actually testing a nuclear device.The only possibility I have come across is that Israeli nuclear scientists were present at France's atmospheric tests in Reganne in Algeria in the early 1960s, or else the post-test calibration data were shared with Israel by France. Polish discovery reveals that the ancestors of all birds were small, light and four-footedFossil footprints have a special place in scientific research. They are testimony to bygone life in action. New research today in a journal gnomically known as Proceedings of the Royal Society B reveals that dinosaurs were alive and scuttling about the planet millions of years before the first evidence from fossilised bones. Sets of footprints beautifully preserved in the mountains of Poland confirm that pioneers of the lineage were already afoot in the Triassic around 250 million years ago, soon after the calamitous Permian extinction that wiped out 90% of life on Earth. Fossil footprints freakishly preserved in ancient mud provide concrete evidence of the size, gait and identity of their makers. These tracks, the largest no more than 40mm, were made by little creatures now called dinosauromorphs, ancestors of the birds. A set of ancient hominid footprints preserved 3.6 million years ago in volcanic ash in Laetoli, Tanzania, are so clear that palaeontologists have been able to argue that they might have been made by a couple, perhaps holding hands. The world changed for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe when a naked human footprint in the sand showed that he had company on his desert island. Every footprint tells a moving story, and the Polish discovery reveals that the ancestors of all birds were small, light and four-footed.
