Committee announces awards celebrating achievement in journalism, art and letters – but notably not fictionThe Huffington Post, a website arguably better known for its news aggregation and celebrity photo galleries than its serious reportage, has picked up its first Pulitzer Prize. In an announcement that underlined the changing shape of journalism, the Pulitzer committee gave HuffPo its prestigious award for national reporting for its breathtaking series Beyond the Battlefield. Also notable was the fact that the web-based political journal Politico also won its first Pulitzer – for editorial cartooning. The 2012 Pulitzer Prizes, announced Monday, celebrate achievement in newspaper and online journalism, literature, nonfiction and musical composition. - US debt and China: a tale of two deficits | Dean Baker
Deficit hawks are manipulating mistaken fears about the dollar and the US trade gap to push a highly partisan cuts programmeIn the movie Philadelphia, the lawyer played by Denzel Washington is shown repeatedly telling his clients to explain their case to him as though he were a 9-year-old. This is a good rule to follow in explaining issues to economists and policy analysts, since they seem to get confused easily in discussing economics. One of the lines frequently repeated by the deficit hysterics is that if we don't get the deficit under control, then there could be a run from the dollar. This is a great line for getting little boys and girls and reporters at elite news outlets very scared. After all, the prospect of the dollar becoming worthless is pretty scary. One of the other lines pushed by this same crew is that we are borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from foreigners, with the Chinese also being cited for special mention. The prospect of the Chinese holding trillions of dollars of US government debt is also scary to little boys and girls and reporters at elite news outlets. The problem with these two scary stories is that they actually are in direct contradiction to each other. The only plausible way that we can stop borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars a year from those nasty Chinese is by having the dollar fall in value against the currencies of our trading partners. This decline probably would not take the form of a scary run that ends in the dollar being worthless, but more likely a substantial and sustained decline that makes US goods much more competitive in international markets. The reason that we are borrowing from abroad every year is that the United States has a trade deficit of the order of $550bn a year, or just under 4% of GDP. - Charles Oberdorf obituary
I first met Charles Oberdorf, who has died aged 70 after suffering from emphysema, more than 30 years ago when we were both associate editors at Weekend Magazine in Toronto, Canada. A supplement distributed as part of various newspapers, the magazine was untypically cosmopolitan: the art director and his assistant were British while Charles was from Pennsylvania. He smoked heavily, seemed – even then – avuncular, and he twinkled.Charles was the eldest of four children of a Coca-Cola salesman and a housewife. He studied theatre at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), Pittsburgh, and became a producer for an NBC affiliate in Philadelphia. He went to Canada in 1967 and was widely thought to be avoiding the draft. In fact he served with the National Guard, protecting the reserves at Fort Knox. He got a job on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's show This Hour Has Seven Days and then graduated to Take Thirty, presented by Adrienne Clarkson, who later became governor general of Canada. He moved into print, first as a travel editor, and then in the late 1970s as an editor at Weekend. When Weekend folded shortly afterwards, he became a freelancer, specialising in food and travel before serving as executive editor on City and Country Home and ultimately joining Ryerson University, Toronto, as a lecturer.Charles was good at teaching. He loved the job and his pupils, yet still found time to indulge in occasional forays into print, sometimes with his German wife, Mechtild Hoppenrath, whom he married in 1977. Together they wrote a guide to the best restaurants and hotels in Canada, entitled First-Class Canada.Although he gave up smoking in the early 1990s, Charles contracted emphysema about a decade ago. - Osama bin Laden's diary: 'Consider Los Angeles, spread out the targets'
Personal, handwritten journal and collection of computer files reveal his hand at work in every recent major al-Qaida threatOsama bin Laden kept pressing followers to find new ways to strike at the US while he was in hiding and his terror organisation was becoming battered and fragmented, officials have said, citing his private journal and other documents recovered in last week's raid.Bin Laden suggested that they attack smaller cities and target trains as well as planes. Above all, he urged them to kill as many Americans as possible in a single attack.Though he was out of the public eye and al-Qaida seemed to be weakening, Bin Laden never yielded control of the worldwide organisation, US officials have said. His personal, handwritten journal and large collection of computer files reveal his hand at work in every recent major al-Qaida threat, including plots in Europe last year that had travellers and embassies on high alert, two officials said.Analysts are continuing to review the documents. The information shatters the government's conventional thinking about Bin Laden, who had been regarded mostly an inspirational figurehead whose years in hiding made him too marginalised to maintain operational control of the organisation he founded.Bin Laden was in reality communicating from his walled compound in Pakistan with al-Qaida's offshoots, including the Yemen branch that has emerged as the leading threat to the United States, the documents indicate.Though there is no evidence yet that he was directly behind the attempted Christmas Day 2009 bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner or the nearly-successful attack on cargo planes heading for Chicago and Philadelphia, it is now clear that they bear some of Bin Laden's hallmarks.Don't limit attacks to New York, he said in his writing

- New to nature No 71: Potamotrygon tigrina
The beautiful markings of the tiger ray have made the freshwater species popular with fishkeepers, but scientists still have a lot to learn about itThe tiger ray is a beautifully coloured freshwater species found in Peru in the Nanay river, a moderately sized tributary of the Amazon. Although specimens of the tiger ray have been sold in the aquarium trade under this common name for at least 13 years, almost nothing is known about its biology. The species was not given a scientific name until 2011, when Marcelo de Carvalho of the University of São Paulo and his co-authors Mark Sabaj Pérez of the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University in Philadelphia and Nathan Lovejoy of the University of Toronto published their official description of it in the journal Zootaxa. To date, there are more rumours than facts about the species, including unconfirmed collections from the Putumayo river in Peru and specimens reaching a full metre in body width. It is likely that many specimens showing up in the aquarium trade originate in the ornamental fish market in Iquitos. Fishkeepers report that the tiger ray is more difficult to maintain in captivity than other commonly kept ray species. Even though de Carvalho and his colleagues suspect the species may be widespread in the upper reaches of the Amazon drainage, so little is known about its population and reproductive habits that it is impossible to say what its status is in the wild. The photograph shows live colouration of the type specimen of P. tigrina when it was freshly captured. The swirling tan-to-bright-yellow-or-orange irregular, curved and convoluted pattern against the brown-to-black dark background colour is nothing short of spectacular and the bands on the apical portion of the tail remove any doubts about the appropri null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Global markets take fright at the return of the zombie banks
Two and a half years ago, financial markets rallied strongly on the assumption that the worst of the slump was over - now the talk is over a double-dip recessionThe activities of financial markets are often irrational. Prices go up for no apparent reason and then suddenly the mood changes. What's worrying about the latest spasm that has convulsed bourses in Europe, Asia and North America is that the sell-off is grounded in real and ever-more pressing concerns. Make no mistake, something serious is going on here. That something can be divided into three parts. The first cause for anxiety is the global economy, and in particular the United States. The report released on Thursday by the Philadelphia Federal Reserve covers only a small part of the Eastern US but it has a good track record for charting the ups and downs of the world's biggest economy. The Philly Fed's barometer has just plunged deep into recession territory. There are also simultaneous slowdowns going on in the rest of the world. Europe's economy has slowed to stall speed, the UK is still operating way below its pre-recession level and activity has come off the boil in China, even though to western eyes growth still looks amazingly strong in China. Two and a half years ago, financial markets rallied strongly on the assumption that the worst of the slump was over. There was relief that Great Depression 2 had been avoided. Now the talk is over a double-dip recession.Concern number one has re-ignited fears about the health of the global financial system. Again, markets have been operating for the past couple of years on the assumption that large dollops of financial help from the taxpayer and a return to growth have made the global banking system immune from a fresh collapse. - Photographer Eve Arnold dies aged 99
Philadelphia-born photographer famous for Marilyn Monroe portraits dies three months before centenaryThe photographer Eve Arnold, one of the most distinctive and admired of the 20th century, has died aged 99, just months short of her centenary in April.Equally renowned for her portraits, fashion and photojournalism, she was born in Philadelphia, a star photographer for Life magazine and a member of the famous Magnum agency since the 1950s, before she made London her permanent home in the 1960s.Her work is in major museum collections including the National Portrait Gallery in London, but she is perhaps best known for sensitive images of Marilyn Monroe taken throughout her career, including a series taken on the set of her last film, The Misfits, in 1961.PhotographyUnited StatesMaev Kennedyguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - Big Data Unleashes the Electric Equivalent of a Free Keystone Pipeline
So I find myself in a refurbished Cold War bunker just north of Philadelphia where the future of the long-haul electric business is on full display. Literally. Massive data flows are collected, analyzed, modeled, forecast and presented on displays the size of several Imax screens. This is a nerve center to manage electricity coursing across thousands of miles, transporting as much energy in equivalent terms as two Keystone pipelines. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Snatch This Bargain Dividend Stock Even Cheaper Than Chairman & CEO Rosenkranz Did
There's an old saying on Wall Street about insider buying: there are many possible reasons to sell a stock, but only one reason to buy. Back on June 14, Delphi Financial Group, Inc.'s Chairman & CEO, Robert Rosenkranz, invested $1,356,754.40 into 50,000 shares of DFG, for a cost per share of $27.14. Bargain hunters tend to pay particular attention to insider buys like this one, because presumably the only reason an insider would take their hard-earned cash and use it to buy stock of their company in the open market, is that they expect to make money. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Vladimir Zakian obituary
My father, Vladimir Zakian, who has died aged 75, lived his life in several countries. He was born in Cairo where his early life was not easy. As an insurgency raged, Vladimir's Italian mother hid her children in the loft of their house to save them from any murderous intruders. The family left Egypt, hitching a lift on a crocodile skin trader's truck which took them through wartorn Sudan to a new life in East Africa. In 1950 Vladimir was sent to the Prince of Wales school in Nairobi, Kenya, where he quickly had to master English. He was an all-rounder: the captain of his house athletics team, a participant in a gymnastics show staged for the visiting Princess Elizabeth and an entertainer, playing songs on his guitar (one of his fellow pupils was the singer Roger Whittaker). His grandfather was one of the principal engineers on the first Aswan Dam, and Vladimir went to Cardiff University to study civil engineering in preparation for running the family business. But with the Mau Mau uprising taking place in Kenya, his family decided to leave Africa. In 1957 Vladimir married my mother, Valerie. After completing his PhD, he was a lecturer in electrical engineering at Loughborough University, and in control systems – a branch of engineering and mathematics – at Manchester University. Vladimir excelled as an academic and a teacher and had the ability to make complicated ideas accessible. The suburban solace of our Cheshire home was Vladimir's antidote to his unsettled upbringing. But his wanderlust remained. Inspired by that alternative bible The Whole Earth Catalog, he announced in the 1970s that we were moving to New Zealand to live in a geodesic dome. The ideas kept coming, but – apart from a sabbatical in Philadelphia – we stayed put.In his field of control systems, he made null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Flyers, Penguins Show Why NHL Teams Shouldn't Pay For Goaltending
If someone told me that Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia by a score of 10-3 last night, I would normally say that it was impossible; the Steelers don't play the Eagles until October. But it's no lie: the Penguins scored a whopping ten goals en route to defeating the Flyers and forcing a fifth game. More shocking is how easy it's been to score throughout the series: through four games the teams have averaged 11 total goals per game. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - The customs of the country | Sarahi Uribe
The paradox of Thanksgiving in this land of immigrants is the way it reunites us – our families fractured by painful absencesMy family celebrated Thanksgiving much like other families. Well, sort of. We ate turkey and mashed potatoes – with a side of Spanish rice and tamales. We watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, after dancing to cumbias and salsa. My cousins and I played Pogs on the floor, while our parents poured steaming cups of rum and punch. I don't remember a time without Thanksgiving. By the time I was born, in Los Angeles, this American holiday had become a tradition for my extended Mexican immigrant family. Just like other families, for us, Thanksgiving was a time to break bread (or pan dulce) and simply be together. Over time and with age, the holiday became not only about celebrating family, but also recognising its absence. For me, Thanksgiving marked the absence of my father, who was deported to Mexico when I was in high school. The empty seat at the dinner table is a reality in most American households, whether that absence is the result of distance, unresolved drama or the inevitable death in the family. This absence in immigrant families is all the more present this season, when the country's collective memory ignores the immigrant narrative inherent to its founding and intrinsic to this holiday. My celebration of Thanksgiving evolved when I embarked on my own immigration journey of sorts – from Los Angeles to Yale University. Seriously, it's that different. Over Thanksgiving break, I was welcomed into the homes of friends with strange assortments of food and relatives. One year, I ate turkey and lasagna in New Jersey with the Cammarata family. Another year, I ate turkey and matzo ball soup in Philadelphia with the Stamieszkins. And this year, I'm buy null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40
- The Triangle Fire: Remembered A Century Later.
In 1909, New York City’s garment industry was beset by a series of strikes that started when the Triangle Waist Company locked out its employees for union organizing activities. Sympathy walk-outs hit the garment industry and the ranks swelled into tens of thousands of employees as the strike spread to Philadelphia and Baltimore. The Uprising of the 20,000, a now somewhat forgotten labor strike, was largely fueled by female, Italian and Jewish immigrant garment workers, who still lacked the right to vote. When the workers struck for higher pay, shorter hours, and safer workplace conditions, public opinion was decidedly against them.
Who were these foreigners to demand more money or to complain about their work conditions? They should be thankful for having a job and living in our country. Hard work never killed anyone. Better they should learn to speak English than waste their time with that union nonsense. Nothing but a bunch of socialists, communists, and anarchists. 1909年、ニューヨーク市の衣。産業は、トライアングルウエスト当社は、組合組織活動のための従業員をロックされているときに起動ストライキ一連の抱えている

- Sarah Palin's bus tour: what will be the next stop?
The Alaskan politician is keeping her itinerary a secret, but here's where we think she might visitBy refusing to divulge her itinerary to the media, Sarah Palin has turned her weird East Coast battle bus tour into a giant guessing game, closely mirroring the fevered speculation that attends her electoral ambitions. So far she's been to: Washington DC; Mount Vernon (home of George Washington); Gettysburg; Philadelphia and New York, where she met Donald Trump, the one-time presidential aspirant whose share of the Idiot Vote is up for grabs. She's heading north, but that's all we know. Where will she end up next? Here are some options:Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Connecticut This Indian reservation is home to what's left of the much-massacred Pequot tribe, but it's also the site of the enormous Foxwoods resort and casino, which demonstrates how a proud and determined people can rebuild their lost nation by taking the money of fools and addicts – a notion as quintessentially American as processed cheese. If she drops in on Sunday she'll be in time for the anniversary of an attack on a Pequot village by colonists in 1637. Also, the Go-Gos are playing. Exit 92 off I-95.Boston, Massachusetts Almost certainly on Palin's double-secret itinerary, it being the birthplace of the American revolution and home of the original Boston Tea Party – where colonists dressed as Indians dumped tea shipments into the harbour, a protest against British taxation that ultimately led to Americans drinking a lot less tea. This historical event has since been co-opted and misrepresented by the rightwing tax cranks of the Tea Party movement, and Palin is their uncrowned Queen. It follows the collapse of a $139m (£107m) takeover bid for the title and its tabloid stablemate, the Daily Post. A consortium that included an investment firm and a banking group had hoped to buy the papers, but the deal was conditional on reaching various agreements with 16 unions, and it was scuttled by a dispute with drivers over pension arrangements. The papers were acquired for $515m (£332m) by public relations executive Brian Tierney from the Knight Ridder group. - Storms around the world
Floods and landslides caused chaos across Colombia last week as the worst rainy season in decades continued. At least 136 people have been killed and 205 injured since the onset of the rains in June, with more than 200,000 homes destroyed in 27 of the country's 32 provinces. The floods, which have affected the lives of 1.2 million people, have been attributed to the current La Niña episode in the tropical Pacific.Heavy rain also hit New South Wales, Australia, with 87mm of rain falling across Dorrigo in the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, the town's wettest November day in 13 years. Up to 120mm was recorded elsewhere. In the north-east US, severe thunderstorms left a five-mile path of destruction across Baltimore, Maryland, during the early hours of Wednesday. Downburst winds and a tornado damaged trees, cars and buildings, and left more than 200,000 customers without power, while more than 350 homes were damaged. The squall-line that produced the storm also flipped eight planes at a New Jersey airport and caused major damage to a shopping mall in Philadelphia. In southern Minnesota, freezing rain on Saturday night and Sunday morning left roads coated in ice, causing hundreds of crashes. Calgary, Canada, awoke to its first major blast of winter last Tuesday, when 20cm of snow hit the city, leaving 15,000 people without power, and icy roads and poor visibility caused 170 accidents.WeatherColombiaSouth AmericaColombiaAustraliaAustralasiaAustraliaCanadaCanadaNorth and Central Americaguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- More power to conservative Democrats | Michael Tomasky
I was struck by Vicious Misanthrope's little anecdote in the previous thread:Yesterday I went to a couple of my local working-class guys to get them to put Manchin signs up in their yards. They've always supported Joe strongly in the past. Not now. Both gave the same reason---he supported the health care bill, and they are going to be forced to take health insurance or the government will be after them. And there was no use in arguing the point with them unless you just wanted to burn bridges or something stupid.Well, let's see. First of all, if it does end up that these gentlemen have to buy insurance, it seems to me likely there will come a day when they're glad they have it. But one can't really expect them to see that now, I suppose. In the nearer term, there is no denying that Democrats in tough states and districts are running away from healthcare and the bailouts and Obama, and politically they have to. Here we have Jonathan Weisman in today's Wall Street Journal:DOYLESTOWN, Pa.—Rep. Patrick Murphy, a fresh-faced rising Democratic star and loyal backer of President Barack Obama's agenda, is facing the fight of his life in a suburban Philadelphia district Mr. Obama won easily two years ago.Across Pennsylvania, another Democrat, Rep. Jason Altmire, is competing in a district Republican John McCain took by a wide margin. Mr. Altmire is running away with it, by running away from the president. In their contrasting fates lie broader lessons for the coming midterms: Live by the president and you could die by the president. Democrats who have been thorns in the president's side are doing well in some of the toughest districts for their party, from Alabama to the steel belt of western Pennsylvania. But swing-district Democrats who have voted with the president in Congress are 私は以前のスレッドでヴィシャス孤客 - ミザントロオプの小さな逸話に感銘を受けた:昨日私は彼らが常にpast.Not強くJoeをサポートされている交流のyards.They。。

- New Yorkers battle third heaviest snowstorm on record
US National Weather Service says city's total snowfall for the month is approaching a metreNew York ground to a virtual halt on Friday after a ferocious winter storm brought nearly 60cm of snow into the city and the surrounding region.Commuters battled to make it into the city as train and bus services struggled slowly through the weather and motorists were warned against driving on dangerously icy roads. The United States National Weather Service said more than 50cm (20in) of snow had fallen so far, and that the storm was set to become the third heaviest on record. The storm is the latest in a series to hit America's north east, and it took New York City's total snowfall for February to more than 91cm (36in).In eastern Long Island, residents were warned to stay indoors as winds of up to 60mph blew through the area, while Philadelphia declared its fourth snow emergency of the winter.Among the storm's casualties was a 46-year-old man who died when a snow-laden tree branch fell on him in Manhattan's Central Park. The roof of a home in suburban New Jersey collapsed under the heavy snow. The slow-moving storm began on Thursday and was predicted to last through Saturday, with several more inches of snow forecast for New York City. It is the third heavy storm to hit the region in a month.According to Reuters, more than 1 million homes and businesses across the regions suffered blackouts on Thursday, and about 700,000 remained without power on Friday. Many businesses and schools shut for the day while hundreds of flights in and out of New York, Newark and Philadelphia were either delayed or cancelled.United StatesNatural disasters and extreme weatherNew YorkAnil Dawarguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions

I'm traveling today, taking the kid out to see her grandparents in California for the first time, but I did want to scribble down these quick thoughts.I know that the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee issued a rather icy statement about Christine O'Donnell's win in the Delaware Senate primary, which indicates that she's probably not going to get much money from them. And I know that liberals are happy, as her win gives Chris Coons a far better chance to take the seat in November. But if this were a football game, this is exactly where the coach would warn his players, don't get cocky, as we call it in the US (strutting, like a cockerel, presumably). Coons is not exactly a household name. He's a county executive. Yes, Delaware has only three counties, and the one over which he executes is by far the largest in population terms (I know it's the rules and it's fair, but isn't it just a little weird that O'Donnell won the nomination with just 30,000 votes, in a whole state?). So he has a base. And voter registration figures in the state have moved dramatically in the Democratic direction over the past decade, from a 45,000-enrollee advantage to one of about 100,000. That's a lot of votes in that state, and Coons should win on it alone.Whatever the official GOP does, O'Donnell is going to get massive money and time from tea party people around the country. Doesn't take much money to run in that state anyway. You do have to buy some air time in the Philadelphia market, which is expensive, but the state is small enough that you can drive it in 90 minutes, so you can meet every single voter if you want to.I also think liberals are going to go overboard in making fun of her view that masturbation equals adultery, as Rachel Maddow did last night.

- Profile: The Teamsters
Teamsters union has a long and rich history - linked to organised crime in the past it is still a powerful force in the USThe 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters is one of the largest unions in the US. Formed in 1903, the union began by organising gravel haulers, beer-wagon drivers and milk and bakery deliverymen. In coming decades it organised truck drivers, and in 1912 organised one of the first transcontinental freight deliveries, a 91-day haul of soap from Philadelphia to San Francisco. In the decades that followed, the union was linked to organised crime and its reputation suffered when its high-profile former president Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in 1975 on his way to meet with a mob figure and another union official. Hoffa had been jailed after his conviction on jury tampering and bribery charges, and federal officials believe the mob killed Hoffa to prevent him from regaining control of the union. In the 1980s, the US justice department accused the union of being under the control of organised crime and sought to take it over. The union persisted, and by the 1990s was the nation's biggest and most powerful labour organisation. Under the leadership of Ron Carey, the union led a 15-day strike in 1997 against delivery giant UPS over its use of part-time workers. The teamsters triumphed, winning substantial pay rises and pension benefits for 185,000 workers. The union is now led by James Hoffa Jr, son of Jimmy Hoffa.Recently the Teamsters has pushed for trucking firms to lower exhaust-pipe emissions at US ports, and has campaigned for government action against FedEx over the status of its drivers.TransportBritish AirwaysTrade unionsUS economyMafiaUnited StatesDaniel Nasawguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content トラック運転手組合 - 組織犯罪には、過去はまだUSThe 1400000のメンバーチームスターズの強力な力が1つは、米国最大の労働組合であるにリンクが長いと豊かな歴史があります
