    • Letters: From Grunwick to Gate Gourmet
In November 2009, in one of her last public appearances, Jayaben Desai (Obituaries, 29 December) attended a seminar at the Women's Library in London, where we organised an exhibition entitled Striking Women: Voices of south Asian women workers from Grunwick to Gate Gourmet, and talked about her memories of the Grunwick strike. She told the audience of her satisfaction that, although the sacked workers at Grunwick were not reinstated and the workers were still not able to join a union, conditions and benefits of many migrant workers have improved since the 1970s, though she was well aware of the need to continue to organise and stand up for one's principles and dignity.Since 1978, there have been a number of other high-profile labour disputes in the UK in which south Asian women have played a vanguard role. One of the most recent involves the sacked workers at the Gate Gourmet catering firm at Heathrow airport, where some 60 workers are still protesting what they claim was unfair dismissal. In September 2007 Jayaben sent a message of solidarity and a cheque to these women on the occasion of their anniversary rally and fundraising event. Although the Grunwick strike was over 30 years ago, Jayaben was a powerful figure until the last.Professor Ruth Pearson University of Leeds, Professor Linda McDowell University of Oxford, Dr Sundari Anihta University of LincolnWomenWomen in politicsGenderguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds Grunwickから南アジアの女性労働者の声をゲートグルメに:2009年11月に、彼女の最後のパブリック出演のいずれか、Jayaben Desaiさん(訃報年12月29日)私たちが女性を叩くと題する展覧会を開催し、ロンドンの女性の図書館でセミナーに参加、およびGrunwickストライキの思い出について語った

    • A long to-do list at Heathrow
Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, said that he won't be accepting his bonus this year. Jolly good, but why was he expecting to get a bonus? BAA, it would seem, was prepared to reward financial achievements in the first 11 months of the year regardless of the misery suffered by passengers at Heathrow in the 12th. That does not sound like a formula designed to encourage management to plan for the worst. Add it to the long list of things to fix at Heathrow.BAAAirline industryAir transportNils Pratleyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Paul and Rachel Chandler were released on Sunday after being held captive by Somali pirates for 388 daysPaul and Rachel Chandler arrived back in the UK tonight after being held captive by Somali pirates for more than a year.Their return brings to an end a 388-day ordeal that began in October 2009, when their yacht was seized by armed pirates as it sailed from the Seychelles towards Tanzania. The couple, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, landed at Heathrow Airport aboard a Virgin Atlantic flight from Nairobi. They left the plane separately from other passengers and, looking tired and pale, walked quickly to a waiting car and were driven off. They were released on Sunday and handed over to local officials in the Somali town of Adado after a ransom of up to £1m (£620,000) was reportedly paid to their kidnappers. The Chandlers were then flown to the capital Mogadishu and on to Nairobi, Kenya. They learned after their release that Paul Chandler's father, Alfred, had died while they were being held.Piracy at seaSomaliaguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds ポールとレイチェルチャンドラーは、388 daysPaulのソマリア海賊に囚われて、Rachelチャンドラーはyear. Theyは、彼らがseaSomaliaguardian.co.ukでheld.

    • Tim Hodlin obituary
Tim Hodlin, who has died aged 64 of a lung disorder, was an exceptional father, friend and grower of roses. He was also a talented writer and television producer with a delightfully anarchic streak that frequently tested the nerve of the organisations for which he worked. He grew up in Malvern, Worcestershire, but when his family moved to London he was transferred to Latymer school in Hammersmith, where his passion became acting. One of his contemporaries there was Alan Rickman, and they later toured together with the National Youth Theatre. He was playing Edmund in King Lear at Lancaster University when he met his wife, Sue. They married in 1967 and went off together to Thailand with Voluntary Service Overseas. When he came back, Tim enrolled at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University to do an MA thesis on Burmese hill people, while earning money on the side with BBC radio. This pattern of eclectic brilliance continued throughout his life.I met him in 1981, by which time he had become a television researcher whose special asset was a good working knowledge of Farsi. He had picked the language up a few years earlier when working for the British Council in Tehran, and when the revolution made it almost impossible for western journalists to operate in Iran, his market value soared. I was editor of Panorama at the time, and he was an irresistible signing: funny, frank, quick-witted and supremely confident that he could deliver the impossible.I sent him off to Iran with a crew, and a few weeks later he rang from Heathrow to say the film was on its way and he would be back in a couple of hours to start editing. It turned out to be a couple of days before he arrived, with a story of preposterous extravagance about being kidnapped on the way from the air

    • BAA airport strike: travel advice
Advice for people using BAA airports, including information about insurance and package holidaysWhich airports are affected? If the strike goes ahead, BAA would be forced to shut its six airports: Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton. When are the strikes?Members of the Unite union voted today for strike action, but the union must give seven days' notice before going on strike. Its leaders will meet on Monday to decide when the walkout will begin and how long the action will last. The earliest a strike could begin is 23 August. It is thought Unite could target the August bank holiday weekend, which starts on Saturday 28 August, as this is likely to be a very busy period for the airports. Why is this happening? The strike action has been called over a pay dispute. BAA is offering staff a 1% pay rise plus another 0.5% linked to changes to the current agreement on sickness. But Unite wants more for its members, partly because staff had a pay freeze last year. There is also disagreement over performance-related bonuses worth £1,150, which staff will not receive this year. What are the chances of the strikes not happening?BAA says no previous union action has ever completely shut down its airports. In the last planned walkout in 2002, the strike was cancelled after the company made an improved offer to the union. What should you do if your flights are cancelled? When airlines have previously been affected by strike action not carried out by their own employees, they have generally offered passengers a refund or an alternative ticket – unless a flight can be found that is within two hours of the original scheduled time of departure, or within four hours of the original scheduled arrival time.If your flight is set to be affected, you should contact your a

    • Letters: High-speed rail plans should benefit us all
Simon Jenkins (High-speed rail will bleed us all for a few rich travellers, 6 January) argues that upgrading existing lines is sufficient to improve north-south rail connections, and a new high-speed line is unnecessary. London already experiences the benefits of high-speed rail to the continent, having cancelled the northern connections, and Jenkins appears reluctant to extend the privilege northwards. For many years we have endured line closures to squeeze every last drop from existing lines, which run close to full capacity. Meanwhile access is restricted by high fares designed to create profit in a model for franchising established in another era.I can now travel to Preston in two hours, but without stops for my connection at Wigan (or anywhere else), and the stopping train that Jenkins advocates takes 30 minutes longer. Perhaps funding for the Crossrail project, itself rendered obsolete by the crash of the City and the unpopular third runway at Heathrow, should transfer to an HS2 project, also designed to carry articulated trailers by night, which will regenerate northern manufacturing industry.Dr Jim Ford Southport• At last, a sensible appraisal of the high-speed rail bandwagon. Why is shaving minutes off already fast rail connections so important? London to Manchester in two hours, and to Edinburgh in four and a half, is already competitive with air travel. It is the rest of the system that needs to be modernised. When Plymouth to York takes six hours, and Truro to Liverpool takes eight, it's clear why regional air travel is still attractive.Michael ThornHelston, CornwallRail transportTransportTransport policyRail travelBusiness travelguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Terrorists don't stand still, and neither can we | Chris Huhne
If they are effective and available, body scanners at airports should have been rolled out by the government years agoNo one wants to have full body scanners in airports. No one wants to be electronically strip-searched at the start of their holidays. It is an invasion of privacy we would all rather avoid. But the foiled bombing attempt on a Detroit-bound plane over Christmas demonstrates that terrorists still have an unhealthy addiction to air travel, and we have to move with the developing threat. Terrorists do not stand still, and neither can we. The government's assessment is that there would have been a 60 percent chance of identifying the explosive on Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had he been scanned.I agree that the timing of the government's announcement is not great. In the aftermath of an attack or an attempted attack, such policies are a visible way for a government to demonstrate that it is taking action. However, four of these £100,000 machines have lain in storage in Heathrow despite successful trials over the last few years. Seventeen of these machines remain mothballed in Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, where the would-be bomber Abdulmutallab stopped off in transit. The government has been in no rush to introduce what we are now being told is an effective way of detecting would-be bombers. This is not acceptable. If they are effective, tested and available, they should have been rolled out years ago, and not as a knee-jerk reaction to an attempted terrorist attack in the United States.Too often, the immediate response to terror attacks or the threat of terror attacks has been disproportionate. For example, there was the proposal for 90 days detention without charge, the Belmarsh provisions locking people up by ministerial fiat, control orders imposing house ar

    • Iceland volcano - UK flights resume
Airlines have begun to return thousands of stranded passengers home after air safety officials agreed to lift volcanic ash restrictions on UK airspace. Follow the latest on the resumption of flights and the recriminations over the government's handling of the crisis8am: Airlines have started the huge logistical operation of trying to return their flights schedule to normal after six days of restrictions were suddenly lifted last night. The first passengers arriving at Heathrow have described their relief at returning to the UK, but stranded passengers and those with bookings have been warned that the phased resumption of flights could takes days and even weeks. There are lots of questions to answer and issues to be resolved including:• Were the volcanic ash restricitions necessary?• Is it safe to resume flights? • Did the airline bosses bully the officials into lifting the ban?• How long will it take to get stranded passengers home? • What happened to all those passengers who were told to head for Calais? • With planes out of position and restriction still in place, how long will it take for air traffic to return to normality?• How damaging has the crisising been to the airline industry?• Did the government do enough to help stranded passengers? • And how will we remember the days of quiet skies? As the recriminations begin the advice to passengers is to check with their airlines about flights.Iceland volcanoAir transportBritish AirwaysIcelandAirline industryMatthew Weaverguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • British Airways strike: have your say
How is the BA cabin crew strike affecting your travel plans, and where do your sympathies lie in the dispute? If you're among the tens of thousands of passengers flying with British Airways over the next couple of weeks, the chances are that you will face severe disruption due to the cabin crew strikes which began today.BA said 65% of passengers would still be able to reach their destination during this first three-day strike, although 1,100 of the 1,950 scheduled flights would be cancelled. Heathrow is expected to be the worst-hit airport, with 60% of long-haul flights and only 30% of short-haul flights expected to fly.The strikes follow an increasingly acrimonious dispute between the airline and the Unite union over plans by the company to cut staffing levels on every flight by at least one crew member.Another four days of industrial action are set to begin on 27 March and further action is expected from mid-April unless the deadlock is broken. The union has accused the company of wanting a war over the dispute, while the company says costs and outmoded working practices need to be tackled. How has the strike affected your travel plans?
