(ACT) Germany's ACT label seems to be on a mission to introduce the world to Europe's rising new jazz-classical pianists. Polish pianist Leszek M。。。żer is classically trained, but discovered jazz in his late teens. His solo debut for the label is, fittingly, a homage to one of Polish music's legends, the short-lived jazz pianist and movie-score composer Krzysztof Komeda. All eight pieces are Komeda's, and M。。。żer gives them a romantic sheen (though one that's abraded by a dissonant urgency) the composer would have understood. The opening Svantetic develops from brightly dancing lines to demonic chordal percussiveness. Low, booming resonances softly boil beneath the tricklingly poignant, then threateningly spiky Sleep Safe and Warm (written for Polanski's film Rosemary's Baby), while the skipping, boppish Cherry is a rare upbeat number. M。。。żer's swaying swing and slow-melody nuances suggest Keith Jarrett at times, but his outbursts of percussive playing, flinty treble-note sparks and staccato drum-pattern sounds are all his own. The pianist stops dead in the midst of the closing Moja Ballada, as if in acknowledgement of Komeda's sudden (and mysterious) death in 1969, at the age of 38. My friend and colleague Dariusz Butowski, who has died of cancer aged 48, was a caring GP at Sherwood House surgery in Edgbaston, Birmingham.Dariusz was born in Gdynia, Poland, and was brought up in the seaside town of Sopot. He spoke fondly of his early years, particularly of time at summer scout camps. The family lived close to the Gdansk shipyards in the early years of Solidarity, and after being good citizens for many years suddenly fell foul of the authorities. In 1979 they fled to Germany, were granted political asylum and remained in an internment camp for nine months. Dariusz, who at this point spoke only rudimentary German, learned the language and finished his baccalaureate in German.After a year reading economics, he was delighted to change to medicine at the university in Hamburg and submitted a doctorate on the biomechanics of the knee. He had to work to fund his studies and took on a variety of jobs including being a nurse and a film extra. Compulsory unpaid internships were difficult for an immigrant without independent means, so he moved to the UK, first to the military hospital in Aldershot and then to work in A&E in Glasgow, where he learned most of his English. After the usual hospital rotation, he moved to Birmingham for his general practice training and then worked for 10 years at Sherwood House.In 2008 he developed gastro-oesophageal cancer and underwent arduous and intensive treatment. The avalanche of cards and messages from staff, patients and friends kept him going through some dreadful low points, and that November he achieved his ambition to return to work. He continued to work and teach fourth-year medical students until a recurrence of cancer in March 2010. Despite further intensive treatment, he never recovered his former fitness. Producer of Pier Paolo Pasolini's early filmsThough an enterprising film producer, often ahead of his times, Alfredo Bini, who has died aged 83, is best remembered for having given the poet Pier Paolo Pasolini the chance to make his debut as a film-maker with Accattone (1960), when no other film company was prepared to back it. Bini produced more than 40 films, including all the features made by Pasolini up until 1967, including Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to St Matthew, 1964). Among his other films were many starring his wife, Rosanna Schiaffino.Bini was born in Livorno, Tuscany, and, during the second world war, ran away from home to join the army. He was wounded and got a medal, but went back to finish his studies in biology. He soon gave up the idea of a scientific career and in 1945 moved to Rome, where, after taking on various jobs, he managed a theatre group. While working as an extra at Cinecittà film studios in Rome, he made friends with Pietro Germi, who gave him a small role in his 1952 film Il Brigante di Tacca del Lupo (The Bandit of Tacca del Lupo).For most of the 50s, Bini worked as a production manager. After various attempts to form a co-operative – unheard of in those years – he finally succeeded in 1960 with a company called Film 5, in which his partners were the scriptwriters Furio Scarpelli and Age (Agenore Incrocci), and the directors Mario Monicelli and Luigi Comencini. They made A Cavallo Della Tigre (On a Tiger's Back, 1961), directed by Comencini, an offbeat prison escape drama in which one prisoner reluctantly involved (Nino Manfredi) would have preferred to stay behind bars as he knew his wife was cuckolding him. Italian bass renowned for his portrayal of Mozart's Don GiovanniDuring the 1950s and 60s, Cesare Siepi, who has died aged 87, was the most sought-after of Italian basses, renowned for his Don Giovanni, a role he undertook in most of the world's major houses. He was indeed the natural successor in the part to the legendary Ezio Pinza, and like Pinza he graced the stage of the Salzburg Festival with his portrayal.There is a permanent record of the occasion in the film made at the festival in 1953 (now available on DVD), with Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting Mozart's opera. In it, as at Covent Garden a few years later in Franco Zeffirelli's famed production, Siepi held the stage as a handsome figure, in the mould of Errol Flynn with the attendant sex appeal, although the interpretation overlooked the more saturnine side of Giovanni's nature so prominent in today's performances of the part.Milan-born, Siepi joined a madrigal choir, devoted to Monteverdi, there when he was 14, and made his concert debut when only 17. He went on to study at the Milan music academy, after winning a scholarship, while earning his keep as a bank-teller. He made his stage debut as early as 1941, as Sparafucile in Rigoletto at Schio, near Vicenza. He fled to Switzerland in 1943 to avoid being conscripted by the Nazi occupying forces. Returning to Italy in 1945, he sang Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco that year at Venice, and the following year took the same role in his auspicious debut at La Scala in his home city.
