He joined the Knights of Saint John, a military order sworn to fight Islam, whose fortress on Malta had recently withstood a siege of macabre cruelty (heads fired from cannons, that sort of thing). On Malta he painted his greatest and most deathly work, a depiction of the murder of Saint John the Baptist in prison that anticipates every modern scene of torture and disappearance.Caravaggio's own death became his theme: he gave his own features to the decapitated Goliath in one of his very last pictures. His palette became darker, his paintings emptier and more sepulchral - The Burial of St Lucy that he painted in Syracuse is set inside a crypt that arches up in a brown void of abandonment. Producer of Pier Paolo Pasolini's early filmsThough an enterprising film producer, often ahead of his times, Alfredo Bini, who has died aged 83, is best remembered for having given the poet Pier Paolo Pasolini the chance to make his debut as a film-maker with Accattone (1960), when no other film company was prepared to back it. Bini produced more than 40 films, including all the features made by Pasolini up until 1967, including Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to St Matthew, 1964). Among his other films were many starring his wife, Rosanna Schiaffino.Bini was born in Livorno, Tuscany, and, during the second world war, ran away from home to join the army. He was wounded and got a medal, but went back to finish his studies in biology. He soon gave up the idea of a scientific career and in 1945 moved to Rome, where, after taking on various jobs, he managed a theatre group. While working as an extra at Cinecittà film studios in Rome, he made friends with Pietro Germi, who gave him a small role in his 1952 film Il Brigante di Tacca del Lupo (The Bandit of Tacca del Lupo).For most of the 50s, Bini worked as a production manager. After various attempts to form a co-operative – unheard of in those years – he finally succeeded in 1960 with a company called Film 5, in which his partners were the scriptwriters Furio Scarpelli and Age (Agenore Incrocci), and the directors Mario Monicelli and Luigi Comencini. They made A Cavallo Della Tigre (On a Tiger's Back, 1961), directed by Comencini, an offbeat prison escape drama in which one prisoner reluctantly involved (Nino Manfredi) would have preferred to stay behind bars as he knew his wife was cuckolding him. But last October, Giuseppe Fanfani, the mayor of the city, was told by an official it had been bought by a Russian gas magnate for €150m. Agreement was said to have been reached on 23 September, just days before the death of Count Giovanni Festari, the archive's owner.The mayor noted that the government order could be lifted in the future, and that unless the Italian state outbid the tycoon within six months, ownership of an irreplaceable fragment of Italy's history would be lost abroad. The announcement of the sale prompted an outcry from scholars and questions from art experts who said the archive was worth, at most, €10m.There was yet more confusion when a lawyer claiming to represent the unidentified buyer announced that his client too had died – in a car crash. Former Italian cyclist Franco Ballerini died on Sunday morning after an accident in a rally in Larciano, Tuscany, the Ansa news agency reported.Ballerini was acting as the co-driver for Alessandro Ciardi when the accident happened.
