Suicide bomber hits memorial for slain Afghan general AFGHANISTAN - A SUICIDE bomber detonated his explosives near a memorial for the assassinated police chief of north Afghanistan on Friday, killing at least three policemen and wounding several, a spokesman for the provincial police chief said. Athletes Who Died So We Can Be Free Always think about the great Ted Williams on Memorial Day. Served twice for his country. John Glenn's wing man. Amazing when you think about how selfish and self-serving we have become as a nation.
When Pat Tillman, the hard-charging safety for the Arizona Cardinals, relinquished a multi-million dollar contract to join the Army with the professed goal of making it as a Ranger, he immediately became an anomaly: In this era of pampered, million-dollar ballplayers, he is a throwback to an earlier age, when the best athletes in America gave some of the best years of their professional careers to serve in the Armed Forces during a time of war.I deserve this. I deserve that. Everything should be free. Today's politicians have us trained well.

Learning more of Jewish London My plan when I went out Running London yesterday was to complete my exertions on reaching the Stanmore and Canons Park synagogue and take a quiet breather nearby, contemplating lessons from the past. Sadly, I fell behind time and had to head home by Tube before reaching my intended destination. Even so, my journey achieved part of its goal in that, on Holocaust Memorial Day, it focused my mind on London's part in Jewish history and how my knowledge of it needs improving. Perhaps readers can help me with that task. What I do know I mostly owe to social historians and the old Lefties I became friends with in my earliest days as a Londoner at the start of the 1980s. William J Fishman, a Cable Street veteran, is the scholar whose works the latter introduced me to, and I keep his East End Jewish Radicals: 1875-1914 beside my desk. The other vital information a learned comrade imparted was that Bloom's restaurant in Whitechapel served the finest salt beef sandwich in the capital. I don't know if that was true, but what David Schneider said after the Whitechapel Bloom's closed in 1996 strikes a chord: We used to go and eat salt beef sandwiches with that delicious kosher mustard. I don't know if they count as sandwiches because the meat to bread ratio was so large. That was the joy of them.As you'll notice if you read this piece about Bloom's from the Jewish Chronicle, which includes Schneider's recollection, it was getting a bad press by the end. But, like some of its critics, I'm sad it's gone and also glad a Jewish influence endures in the East End despite the migrations north to Stamford Hill, home of Europe's largest Orthodox community and, of course, to the suburbs beyond. The Stanmore and Canon's Park synagogue has the largest membership of any in Europe. I'll make sure I
Mary Rosser Hicks obituary My wife, Mary Rosser Hicks, who has died of cancer aged 73, often found herself in the eye of a leftwing political storm. She began working for the Morning Star in 1976, taking charge of the fighting fund, which raised much-needed money from supporters. The following year she became chief executive of the newspaper, working with grassroots supporters as well as leading trade unionists and politicians in the UK and abroad.During the struggles for control, brought about by divisions within the Communist party, she played a key role alongside the editor, Tony Chater, in ensuring its continued existence. In 1988, just before the demise of the Communist party of Great Britain, Mary took part in the re-establishment of its successor, the Communist party of Britain. After 10 years, she was one of almost 50% of executive committee members of the Communist Party of Britain who were virtually forced out of office and membership during a time of sharp political differences. She faced crises with determination and courage, characteristics which had already found expression when, in the late 1960s, she took the radical step of leaving the Catholic church and joining the Communist party. This was a challenging move for Mary, who was born to a Catholic family. It represented a fundamental change in the direction of her life. Educated at a convent school in Bournemouth, where she had been born Mary Hanlon, she received a rigorous education which enabled her to develop the writing and rhetorical skills which enhanced her political activism. From 1965 Mary was a member and, for many years, chair of the Marx Memorial Library in Clerkenwell Green, central London. In this time, the building was restored, the collections developed and the finances stabilised. Mary took part in Marxist-Christia

Poland marks anniversary of president's death in Russian air crash People fill churches and cemeteries while large crowd gathers in front of presidential palace to remember Lech KaczynskiChurch bells have been rung across Poland to mark the first anniversary of the death of President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others in a plane crash in Russia.Poles filled churches and cemeteries and a large crowd gathered in front of the presidential palace, where Kaczynski and his wife, Maria, lived until their deaths in the crash, which happened near Smolensk. The crowd fell still at 8:41 am. Sirens were sounded in central Warsaw, while church bells pealed elsewhere.Earlier, the loved ones of many victims gathered for a private mass at Warsaw airport, to which the coffins of the 96 victims were returned last year.At the time, Poland experienced a short period of national unity amid the shock of losing the president, the first lady and many ranking military and civilian leaders. The disaster, however, quickly deepened political and social divisions and, in an indication of those divisions, separate commemorative events are being held. The prime minister, Donald Tusk, the president, Bronislaw Komorowski, and other politicians placed candles at a memorial plaque to the victims in a Warsaw military church. But Kaczynski's twin brother, Jaroslaw, marked the anniversary separately, placing a large wreath in front of the presidential palace.Kaczynski and many of the others killed belonged to the nationalist conservative Law and Justice party, which Jaroslaw Kaczynski heads. That camp blames Tusk's government for selling out Poland's interests by allowing Russia to lead the main investigation into the crash. Earlier this year, Russian investigators concluded that Poland bore full responsibility for the crash, sparking outrage. The plane crashed while trying to land in

Memorial Day and How War Films Have Changed Yesterday was Memorial Day. The day when, as Albert Brooks joked, we barbecue ribs in honor of people who fought for freedom. So I've been thinking about how we think about heroism and sacrifice, how our perceptions of war have changed over time, and how this is all reflected in our films about warfare.
Queen's visit to Ireland: Garda foil plans to disrupt Dublin events Irish bomb squad defuse 'viable' pipe bomb found on a bus as police contain dissident republican demonstratorsRepublican dissident attempts to disrupt day one of the historic royal visit appeared to have been thwarted.Hours before the Queen arrived, a viable pipe bomb was found on a bus with 30 people on board and was made safe by the Irish Defence Forces bomb disposal squad. The bus had been travelling from Co Mayo in the west of Ireland and was outside a hotel in Maynooth, Co Kildare when the device was found.Later two separate demonstrations against the Queen's presence at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin failed to breach Irish police lines.A massive security operation kept some 200 republican protesters, who were split between two locations, far away from the royal entourage.Apart from a few missiles hurled at police officers near the city's Rotunda maternity hospital in Parnell Square, there was little street disorder as the Queen laid a wreath at the memorial built originally to honour the fallen of Irish republicanism. The radical republican group 。irígí could only muster around 150 demonstrators at the southern end of Parnell Square. At the northern end, close to the garden, just 60 protesters turned up to a rally of Republican Sinn Féin, the party linked to the terror group Continuity IRA.Seven people were arrested after they attempted a sitdown protest in O'Connell Street prior to the Queen's cavalcade sweeping up Dublin's main thoroughfare around 3.15pm.Meanwhile bottles, rocks and fireworks were thrown at Garda lines in North Frederick Street a couple of hundred metres north of the Garden of Remembrance. The police said that 21 people had been arrested in connection with the violence, but it was not on the scale expected given that around 5,000 officers we
Armenia remembers massacres amid Turkey impasse Armenians on Sunday marked 96 years since the mass killings of their ancestors under the Ottoman Empire amid apparent deadlock in the process of normalising relations with modern Turkey.Armenia contends the killings were genocide -- a label supported by some countries but vehemently opposed by Turkey -- and the controversy has poisoned ties between Yerevan and Ankara to this day.Thousands of people marched though Yerevan to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial dedicated to the victims of the killings, which overlooks the capital, dominated by a needle-shaped stele.
Eric Strach obituary My father, Eric Strach, who has died aged 96, was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St Helens and Whiston hospitals, Merseyside. He specialised in the treatment of children with spina bifida, and designed appliances which improved their quality of life, including the Strach-Edney calliper and a shunt to drain fluid from the head, for those affected by hydrocephalus.Eric was a keen amateur astronomer and built a solar observatory in his garden. His observations and drawings of solar flares and prominences were meticulously executed and published in the journal of the British Astronomical Association.Eric was born into a close-knit Jewish family in Brno, Czechoslovakia, where his father owned an umbrella shop. After graduating in medicine from Prague University in 1938, Eric went on holiday to France. As the situation in Europe deteriorated, his parents dissuaded him from returning. Eric tried desperately to arrange a visa for his older sister, Ilse, and her children. He always thought he could have done more to save them.He arrived in the UK in 1940 with the Czech army and resumed his medical career, becoming the senior house surgeon at Wigan Infirmary. He married Margaret Forshaw in 1945. After the war, he returned to Czechoslovakia to help with the typhus epidemic in the Terezin concentration camp. He and Margaret intended to live in Czechoslovakia but, when Eric discovered that his family had perished in concentration camps, decided to settle in the UK.Until the fall of the iron curtain, Eric did not return. After the establishment of the Czech Republic in 1990, Eric set about having a memorial stone erected in the Jewish cemetery in Slavkov, near Brno, where his grandparents had lived, and renovating the synagogue there. Tucson memorial: Obama's moment | Editorial It was his finest speech as president, while the Republicans dug themselves even deeper into the hole they have climbed intoBarack Obama has just made the finest speech of his presidency. It is not just that, in performing the role of pastor to the victims of the shootings in Arizona, he shed his professorial reserve and became the empathetic head of state that everyone who crammed the National Mall on his inauguration expected him to be. Nor did his speech contain memorable phrases. It was that, after two bruising years in power, Mr Obama has at last found his voice. He did so by rediscovering the themes that made him an outstanding presidential candidate. If he can set a tone not just for Tucson and the aftermath of Saturday's dreadful events, but nationally and for the rest of his presidency, this will be the change we can believe in.The Republican camp, by contrast, dug themselves even deeper into the hole they have climbed into. If Mr Obama's tone was inspired, Sarah Palin's was calamitous from the perspective of a party knowing it has to capture the centre ground to return to power. Not only did she sound defensive and angry (undoing the effect of the presidential props on and behind her). In rifling through her pill case for yet another dose of hyperbole, she stumbled over the concept of a blood libel.Blood libel? Can a Fox News commentator in the 21st century, in any conceivable way, compare her situation as a victim of a slur to that of Jews who were persecuted, forced to convert and massacred in 12th-century England as religious fervour during the Crusades reached its peak? If she did not know what she was talking about, she should have shut up. If she did, she displayed such a lapse of judgment in choosing this particular analogy as to rule out her candidacy
Top 10 Mobile TV Moments: Michael Jackson's Death, World Cup Lead MobiTV released an interesting list yesterday that sheds light on what kinds of live events drive people to watch television on their phones. Turns out it's really not that different from what drives humanity in general: Death, sex and soccer. Or as Mobi put it:

The result is a list of the ten most-viewed live events in MobiTV’s history, among them a major mea culpa, the biggest soccer match in four years, one wedding and a funeral:

Coverage of Michael Jackson's death and memorial took spots 1 and 4, respectively. The United States vs. Algeria 2010 World Cup Soccer match was 2. Other notables: President Obama's inauguration took a high spot, but the Sarah Palin vs. Joe Biden debate beat out Obama vs. McCain. In the marriage vs. divorce category, Tiger Woods' confessional press conference beat out last month's Royal Wedding.

Close Guantánamo and let the 9/11 suspects receive a fair trial | Andrea LeBlanc I lost my husband on UA flight 175. The group of victims' families I belong to wants the rule of law and American justice restoredOn 11 September 2001, I lost my husband. He was a passenger aboard United Airlines flight 175 when it was flown into the south tower of the World Trade Centre. He was a professor of cultural geography and would have been the very person his family, colleagues, friends and students would have sought out on 9/11 to help us better comprehend the events of that horrific day.As a colleague said at his memorial service, because he had devoted his life to trying to know and understand the perspectives of others, he would have been able to help us understand the grievances of some against our government, grievances that they obviously felt justified the violent and terrible taking of the lives of more than 3,000 civilians. Unlike those who attacked us, Robert believed in the importance and necessity of seeking justice, but not in revenge.I, along with the members of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, support the position that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the four detainees charged with 9/11 crimes should be tried in federal courts and not in military tribunals. This was the promise made to us by Barack Obama throughout his campaign, and by Attorney General Eric Holder, as the justice department began its inquiry into the process of closing Guantánamo Bay. Then, closing Guantánamo Bay was a promise to keep faith with the American people that we are a nation of laws, laws that determine and reflect our best qualities, laws that we aspire to live by.Since 9/11, criminals have been successfully prosecuted in our civilian courts, yet we continue to detain human beings outside of our borders, outside of our view and outside of our Constitution.

The MCB's Wonderland election | Madeleine Bunting The vote for a new leader of the Muslim Council of Britain points up worrying fissuresImagine an election with only one declared candidate running … and he is not going to win. It may sound like a form of democracy better devised in Alice's Wonderland, but unfortunately it's home-grow n: this is how the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) is due to decide on its next leader this Sunday.Over the past few years, the MCB has been repeatedly lambasted in the media; its sins range from tolerating hate preachers, officers who embroil the organisation in the complex politics of the Middle East, failing to educate its affiliate mosques in the rules of inter-faith relations and an intermittent refusal to attend Holocaust Memorial Day. Under this barrage, the MCB has been relegated to the sidelines of British public life. The Labour government, after initial enthusiastic patronage, pointedly turned its back and cut all links until it could get its house in order.Meanwhile, the other side of the story are the deep divisions that exist within the MCB. The tiny team in the Tower Hamlets office walk a tightrope, placating their 500-odd membership who are as reluctant to pay their dues as they are demanding of the MCB to stem what they see as a rising tide of Islamophobia. The resulting combination of high expectations and precarious finances does much to explain the kind of caution and nervousness that seems to weigh down the MCB officials. They have that appearance of hunkering down, always fearful of the next storm that could shipwreck the whole outfit. While some parts of the media seem to see the MCB as an Islamist front, part of a powerful network on the march for Europe-wide domination, the reality is rather more prosaic, struggling to pay for tea bags and the telephone bill, and in _NULL_

More must be done to stop cyberbullies | Christina Meredith Progress has been made in protecting children online, but the death of Phoebe Prince in the US shows there is still much to doPhoebe Prince moved with her family from Fanore, Ireland to Massachusetts in September 2009. She died only months later after killing herself. Prince was 15. Her death occurred after a relentless campaign of bullying by a group of students from her school, South Hadley high school. The bullying she endured was both face-to-face during school hours as well as online on her Facebook page. After her death, the hounding did not end and malicious messages were posted on the Phoebe Prince Facebook memorial page.Although the bullying was witnessed by school staff, they did not intervene – even during school hours. I don't believe there is any reason why overt bullying should not be confronted, but the more insidious form of online abuse – or cyberbullying as it is known – is more covert and difficult to challenge. With the rapid growth of new forms of communication and social networking technology comes the potential growth of abuse perpetrated on such systems.Experts define cyberbullying as a young person being repeatedly tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, or otherwise targeted by another child or teenager using text messaging, email, instant messaging or any other type of digital technology. The practice is not limited to children but distinction in age groups is usually marked by a different choice of words: the adult experience of online abuse is usually referred to as cyberstalking or cyberharassment. The National Centre for Social Research undertook a study on cyberbullying in November 2009, involving 15,000 children. The study examined the characteristics of bullying victims in secondary schools in England between the ages of 14 and 16,

Michael Tomasky: Escape from politics I was glad that Obama went down to West Virginia for the memorial service for the miners yesterday, and I was especially glad that the event was completely devoid of politics. If you remember the campaign, you'll remember that Obama got slaughtered there by Hillary Clinton. He appeared in the state just once, in the capital of Charleston, flying in and flying out. In the general, John McCain beat him handily. In the county in which Obama appeared yesterday, Raleigh, he received just 36% of the vote in 2008.That was two years ago. In the intervening months, a toxic campaign designed to persuade people like those in Raleigh County that the president isn't even really an American has taken hold. Between that and the general state of the economy and suspicion about Democratic environmental goals, I can't imagine what Obama's approval rating is down there. And yet, West Virginians rose to the occasion and showed him the respect due a president making such a voyage. They were grateful that he came and demonstrated that important people who aren't from the state cared. I hope he learned that those hard-working people are fundamentally good hearted, and I hope they learned that he cares more about them than they thought. The problem in the future will be that the corporate interests that run the state will, after a decent interval of respectfulness, revert to form. Right now, the people of the state want a transparent and honest investigation. There's no reason this administration shouldn't want to give them that. And if it does, and if it finds what many folks suspect it might find, Blankenship and company will start screaming about how Obama is mounting a frontal assault on their livelihood and way of life. It never ends with people like that. But at least it was in cessation for

Lost Gandhi ashes to be scattered at sea in S.Africa Some of the last of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes, kept in secret for decades by a family friend, will be scattered at sea off South Africa's coast on Saturday, 62 years after his assassination, his family said. After a radical nationalist shot Gandhi on January 30, 1948, he was cremated according to Hindu custom.Normally, ashes are immersed in rivers or the sea within days, but for Gandhi, his remains were divided to many urns and sent around India and across the globe so his followers could hold memorials.
Roy Greenslade: Remembering Lasantha Wickramatunga The Frontline Club is hosting a memorial to mark the first anniversary of the murder of Sri Lankan journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga (also spelt Wickrematunga). He was shot while he was on his way to work on 8 January last year in an attack by four gunmen. His killing caused an international outcry, not least because he anticipated the likelihood of his own death in an editorial in the newspaper he edited, The Sunday Leader. It was published three days after he died. In blaming the Sri Lankan government for abuses of human rights, he wrote: Murder has become the primary tool whereby the state seeks to control the organs of liberty... Countless journalists have been harassed, threatened and killed. It has been my honour to belong to all those categories and now especially the last. The Frontline Club's memorial starts at 7pm on Thursday. Taking part will be former Financial Times journalist Edward Mortimer, chair of the Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace & Justice and Roma Tearne, the Sri Lankan-born author of Brixton Beach, the novel that deals with the horror of her country's civil war. There will also be a video contribution by Sonali Samarasinghe, Wickramatunga's wife, journalist and human rights campaigner. It is sobering to reflect that no suspect has ever been arrested for Wickramatunga's death. Moreover, Sri Lanka is now rated by the international press watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, as one of the worst countries in terms of press freedom. In September last year, Dileesha Abeysundera, a journalist working for the Sinhalese-language weekly Irudina, was the target of a kidnapping attempt. To get some idea of the current situation, see this video clip of Sunanda Deshapriya talking about the lack of press freedom in Sri Lanka.
Will Self, Sebald, the holocaust | Andrew Brown Does holocaust memorial day diminish and trivialise our response to unimaginable evil?I wasn't taking notes during Will Self's W.G. Sebald memorial lecture on Monday night, so I don't have anything verbatim to quote, but he did argue that Britain should not have decided to observe holocaust memorial day. He thought that Germany absolutely should do so; but that British (and by extension, American) observation of the day was corrupted by smugness. After all, an important point about the holocaust, when considered from a purely British point of view, is that we didn't do it.But a true and awful lesson of the genocide (I think Self meant) is that we, or any other nation, might have done it ourselves. The example he gave, with supporting evidence from Conrad, was boring little Belgium and its horrendous crimes in the Congo; but there are some episodes in British history where we were at best complacent about avoidable mass killing, though they did not often involve war and the only ones that I can think of were a couple of famines and the African slave trade. But any nation prepared to use nuclear weapons against civilian populations in a first strike cannot be said to have set its face against genocide in principle. Genocide, as Self said, is something that humans have quite often done to other humans. None of this should suggest that he was talking down the evil of what had happened. On the contrary, his point was that our smugness, our own relief that we were not the perpetrators, acts itself to diminish the horror and the put it out of its proper, towering proportion. His argument would certainly apply as much against the competitive victimology of some Muslim and anti-Israeli rhetoric.I think he's right. It seems to me that the moral significance of the holocaust is no _NULL_
