Though that requires you to stretch the definition of enterprise as much as a pair of bicycle tights on a sumo wrestler. [More...] In fact, you could argue that some of the iPad 2's new features would actually put off enterprises, as IDC analyst Bob O'Donnell did. There was nothing specific there for the enterprise. Indeed, some companies don't want the new cameras because of privacy and security concerns. I won't go that far. But I will argue that Apple, as is its wont, basically chose not to devote its engineering prowess on the enterprise front. No encryption - as the iPhone has; no improvements to iTunes for easier enterprise security and management; no true multitasking, as analyst Jack Gold argued. Not that it will matter - my prediction is that adoption of the iPad by businesses will only accelerate from its impressive debut year (80% of Fortune 100 testing/deploying, 366 documented mass rollouts). Why? Let's go through my list - oh how I love my lists - of reasons: 1) The Bring Your Own Device phenomenon. According to IDC, half of the iPads used at work are being brought in as individually-owned devices. The other half are being deployed by organizations who have calculated that the productivity gains from equipping executives, salespeople, business analysts and others with iPads outweigh the inability to lock them down with hundreds of group policies, the typical overkill on a corporate PC. 2) It's the software, stupid. IT knows that any meaningful upgrade to the iPad's enterprise-worthiness will be delivered via improvements in iOS. iOS 4 released at last year's WWDC was huge because it opened up lots of APIs for third-party vendors to add their own enterprise and security controls. Speaking of the ecosystem... 3) The iOS ecosystem is hu-uge. Besides Sybase and our mobile device management and app development platform, there are plenty of competing firms (though our position is that most of those are less integrated solutions that will, for large or growing firms, create more cost in the long run). There are even plenty of firms solving one of the iPad's less-obvious but nagging problems - its lack of enterprise storage capability, such as the ability to connect natively with SharePoint. Turns out there are plenty of vendors offering solutions. 4) Low price. As widely noted, the iPad starts at a significantly lower price ($499, not including the temporary $399 price for the original iPad) than its rivals, and not just the unapologetically enterprise-oriented rivals like the Cisco Cius. That's important because, as noted, half of the iPads in business use today are being brought in by consumers. So even if IT is not particularly price-conscious, consumers are. 5) Apps. I've always found that my satisfaction from a restaurant meal can be expressed by this formula: Tastiness + Portion Size + My Hunger At That Moment / Price = Satisfaction If I were to create a similar formula for user satisfaction for a tablet, it might look like something like this: Hardware Sexiness + User Interface + Apps / Upfront Price + (Long-term Cost of Ownership, i.e. mobile subscription / 2) = Satisfaction The point here is that apps matter, both the quality and the quantity. Apple wins hands-down on both counts. --------------- Do you buy my argument that iPad's enterprise uptake this year won't be a function of its enterprise features?

Martin Moore's study, Shrinking world: the decline of international reporting in the British press, has rightly received a fair amount of attention (examples here and here and here). And there are many others. Plus, he wrote a goodly piece in Monday's print section.I am sure the commenters are sincere in their appreciation of the study. But we need to exercise caution because they are journalists lamenting the state of journalism. So they are parti pris. I have no quarrel with the study itself, though I do consider it misses one significant point by choosing 1979 as its starting point. The amount of space given to international news was in decline well before that.As I argue in my London Evening Standard column today, the missing key factor is the final collapse of the British Empire.Nearly all the foreign news in British papers before, say, 1960 was about incidents, usually violent, involving the colonies. I largely agree with the validity of most of Moore's other explanations for the falling away of international reporting: stretched editorial budgets, the termination of the cold war, the growth of 24-hour news broadcasting, the rise of the internet, and the globalisation process that merges foreign and home stories, particularly in business coverage.But I'm altogether less taken with his claim of a lack of editorial confidence. It has much more to do with a lack of readers' interest. Editors cannot afford to devote precious space to stories that do not engage their audiences. And they are more aware than ever - due to website monitoring - what does and does not gain readers' attentions.I wish it were different. My husband, Paul Olive, who has died suddenly aged 67, was a quiet visionary. Born into a Jewish Communist family in Chelmsford, Essex, he grew up with the dream of a fairer world, where each individual could lead a fulfilled life. The dream evolved, and he worked tirelessly to turn it into reality.On leaving the King Edward VII grammar school in Chelmsford, Paul read philosophy at Edinburgh University. He devoted time and energy to political causes, including the anti-apartheid movement and a local community newspaper. Throughout the 1970s, Paul worked full-time for the Communist party, editing its fortnightly magazine, Comment. He also contributed to Marxism Today.Paul was a key figure in the Eurocommunist faction, arguing for a more open and democratic strategy. His scholarly demeanour, deep and resonant voice, and his gentle, courteous manners lent him the air of an Oxbridge don rather than a communist revolutionary. From Comment, he moved to the party's daily paper, the Morning Star, and later edited the journal of the local government union Nalgo.In 1988 Paul joined the Guardian, where he became chief sub-editor on the foreign desk. His colleagues remember his gentle insistence on the highest possible standards and his infinite patience.Paul and I met in 1977 through our local Communist party branch and married 25 years and two children later, in 2002. Paul retired in 2008 to devote himself mainly to music, playing the trombone in a local orchestra. Still in pursuit of his dream and mindful of the capacity of music to bring people together, he leafleted and knocked on doors in search of amateur musicians.The results were extraordinary: first our street and then our area developed its own band. The site is equally revered by Buddhists, and pilgrims of both faiths traipse up in proof of the country's admirable religious tolerance.They come to worship at the Goddess of Fire temple, where a flame of natural gas flickers undyingly next to a stream of water. They call it, rather unsurprisingly, the eternal flame. It lures the sadhus and devotees from as far afield as southern India, the richer ones flying in by helicopter to the temple's helipad.Far more interesting are the 108 spouts of water lined along a semi-circular wall, all shaped like animal heads and representing the Hindu deities. Krishna dutifully cups water in his hands at each and wets his hair. Even better, a trio of Nepali teenagers arrive, strip down to their underwear, and then run and duck under the spouts, screaming shrilly at the iciness of the mountain runoff. Obviously none of the things mentioned by Jinnah are new for modern-day Pakistan but they have had time to seep into and dent the national character and abilities in a big way.Over the years, more and more people have assumed positions of relative power and authority because of connections or outright bribes. Once employed, they hone their skills of sycophancy and develop connections to assure promotions and/or lucrative appointments.Quintessentially Pakistan has always been run by a permanent bureaucracy. My father, Richard Sanderson, who has died aged 63 after a hernia operation, exemplified the best qualities of a general practitioner. He was devoted to his patients, of whom there were tens of thousands over his 30 years in the same surgery in Drayton, Hampshire.Richard was as focused on their health as emotional beings as he was on their physical problems. His dedication was admirable – not a single copy of the British Medical Journal arrived without being studied, annotated and filed.He was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and emigrated to London with his family as a child. Richard managed to assimilate into British culture while still maintaining a distinctively Aussie laid-back attitude to life. He was educated at Christ's Hospital school, near Horsham, West Sussex, and then Trinity Hall, Cambridge.Coming from august medical stock – his father Kenneth Sanderson was a professor of dermatology at St George's hospital, London – Richard forged his own path, treating people, not diseases. He was also a considerate and demanding trainer of young doctors, and many benefited from his guidance over the years. He was much admired by colleagues and patients and no other doctor's Christmas could have been blessed with so many bottles of Harvey's Bristol Cream.Medicine was not his whole life. He was an accomplished musician (following in the footsteps of his mother, Ronda Gehling, who was one of Australia's most renowned pianists in the 1950s), who loved and feared his cello in equal measure. The first president of Trinidad and TobagoThe lawyer and diplomat Ellis Clarke, who has died aged 93, played a leading role when Trinidad and Tobago became an independent country in 1962. While governor general from 1972, he was involved in drafting the republican constitution that in 1976 broke ties with the British monarchy while retaining membership of the Commonwealth. As the Caribbean republic's first president, appointed under that new constitution by an electoral college, he helped guide it from 1976 to 1987.When Eric Williams, prime minister and founder of the People's National Movement (PNM), died in office in 1981, Clarke appointed his successor, George Chambers. Around 40% of the country's population of currently around 1.3m people are Afro-Trinidadian, 40% Indo-Trinidadian, and 20% mixed, white or of Chinese descent. Clarke was more at home with the Afro-Trinidadian-based PNM, and when the Indo-Trinidadian-based opposition National Alliance for Reconstruction came to power in 1986, there were problems, notably a disagreement between the president and the prime minister, ANR Robinson, over powers of appointment. While Clarke won a court case over one such issue, a second dispute deterred him from seeking re-election for a third term.His time in office had coincided with a period of relative prosperity and social stability. The bar of success is being lowered.The war has become both a magnet for, and training ground of, no less than two generations of jihadis, each more determined than the last. It is the rallying cause for terrorist acts against civilian targets across the world. Enormous military resources are being devoted to fighting the Taliban on both sides of the border – there are 140,000 Pakistan military in the tribal areas alone. Yet all that has been accomplished is a larger battlefield and a more intense battle. The Pentagon's initial optimism that a surge of US troops would push the Taliban out of Helmand and Kandahar has faded, even before troop levels have peaked. Thus it becomes yet more evidence of the extent to which the country is overrun by dark-skinned migrants, especially over-fertile Muslims.But if things were really that simple, why did other outlets: this one, the Sun, the Times, the Independent, go with the boys' name officially deemed most popular, Oliver. Well they listened to the ONS, which made the point that the names are listed on the basis of what is written on the birth certificate. The statisticians don't aggregate the variants and privately, they're aggrieved at those who do so to make a fairly cheap political point.But they could aggregate: and then we would see the Jameses added to the Jims, and the Thomases to the Toms and the Tommys and the Tommies, because all are basically the same name. How does Black to play save himself?DK: A cartoon once depicted the arch-rivals Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov as wizened elderly men sitting on a park bench, still animatedly discussing chess variations, and it is this image that comes to mind while reading Kasparov vs Karpov 1988-2009 (Everyman Chess £30), the latest volume in Kasparov's increasingly grandiose series, and my final nomination for our book of the year.This is the third tome Kasparov has devoted to their games, and reflects how much thought the former world champion still gives to his bitter rivalry with Karpov. The two Ks played a total of 167 serious games against each other, locked in combat for hours and hours and devoting even more time in preparation for these encounters. Perhaps it is no surprise that, in spite of their differences, this stressful intimacy created a curious symbiosis, evident from Kasparov's descriptions of their sometimes lengthy postmortems: who else can they turn to if they want to work through these games?This is a serious book and it deserves serious attention. Every one of their encounters between 1988 and 2009 is documented in detail, practically every move and thought analysed, not just in terms of the game itself, but with reference to their past meetings, so that following the annotations is sometimes like looking into a hall of mirrors. In previous volumes the analysis has been offset by a compelling narrative away from the chessboard, with the shadow of Soviet politics above their every move. This time Kasparov mainly focuses on his struggle with Fide, and at times my eyes glazed over. There is too much self-justification. He helped preserve the Sistine Chapel and the Leaning Tower of PisaThe Italian conservation scientist Giorgio Torraca, who has died aged 83 of complications from pneumonia, was a brilliant chemist and teacher who devoted his career to the preservation of historic buildings, monuments and archaeological sites. He helped co-ordinate international responses to the flooding of Florence in 1966, was consultant from 1992 for the cleaning of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and was a member of the committee for the stabilisation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (2004-09).A frequent visitor to Britain, Torraca gave technical advice concerning the Rose theatre archaeological site, near Shakespeare's Globe theatre on the south bank of the Thames in London. In the 1990s, an office redevelopment was redesigned to allow continuing access to the remains of the Rose theatre beneath it. Up to his final illness, he was working as a consultant on the Herculaneum Conservation Project run by the British School at Rome, and advised the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles on research to improve grouts to consolidate friable historic frescoes.Torraca was born in Padova, northern Italy, the son of Vincenzo Torraca, a journalist who became a longstanding impresario at the Eliseo theatre in Rome. His mother was president of the Italian Women's Union. Giorgio graduated from Rome University with a degree in chemistry in 1950 before taking his master's at the Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1953.He undertook postgraduate work in the engineering faculty at Rome University until 1958, and during this time became a consultant to the renowned Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome. - Letters: Cancel Pakistan's debt to aid relief
It's moving that the British people have been so generous in response to Pakistan's terrible disaster (Editorial, 23 August). But politicians internationally also have a duty to respond – and with more than money. For many years Pakistan was run by undemocratic regimes kept in power with western support, including through large loans which did little for ordinary people. This reckless lending means Pakistan repays its loans at a rate of $3bn a year. Indeed, part of the recently announced assistance to Pakistan includes nearly $3bn of new loans from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. This will only add to Pakistan's unsustainable $49bn debt.Pakistan should not have to mortgage its future by being forced to borrow for relief. We are calling for the immediate cancellation of Pakistan's unpayable and unjust debts, and the use of grant aid, rather than loans, to help Pakistan back on its feet. Free-jazz trumpeter with a hypnotic, slow-moving soundThe trumpeter Bill Dixon, who has died aged 84, worked extensively with the pianist Cecil Taylor, the saxophonist Archie Shepp and many of the post-60s European free-jazz fraternity. He was a dedicated representative of the movement that fashioned its own language, owing little to the great American songbook, or any songbook.When he came to play with Taylor and the percussionist Tony Oxley at the Royal Festival Hall in London six years ago, Dixon brought gravitas to a show sometimes in danger of capsizing under the weight of Taylor's dissonant blizzards of notes. Unaccompanied, he delivered a hypnotic trumpet performance, throwing breathy long notes against electronic echoes, paying respect to space and silence.It was typical of his disciplined and rigorous work from the 1960s onwards, when he steadily deepened his reliance on the expressiveness of timbre and tone-colour, and evolved a signature sound of slow-moving, low-end melody lines, often expressed through understated half-valve slurs, expressive growls, vocalised sounds and dramatic vibrato. Like Taylor, Dixon was fascinated by dancers – he had a long creative relationship with Judith Dunn – and his music frequently seemed to suggest the graceful, weightless movement of dancers in space.He was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, but grew up in New York, where his family relocated during the Depression. As a high-school student, he played the trumpet but was more dedicated to visual art. He devoted himself to formal music studies after his return from military service in Germany in 1946. I was glad that Obama went down to West Virginia for the memorial service for the miners yesterday, and I was especially glad that the event was completely devoid of politics.If you remember the campaign, you'll remember that Obama got slaughtered there by Hillary Clinton. He appeared in the state just once, in the capital of Charleston, flying in and flying out. In the general, John McCain beat him handily. In the county in which Obama appeared yesterday, Raleigh, he received just 36% of the vote in 2008.That was two years ago. In the intervening months, a toxic campaign designed to persuade people like those in Raleigh County that the president isn't even really an American has taken hold. Between that and the general state of the economy and suspicion about Democratic environmental goals, I can't imagine what Obama's approval rating is down there.And yet, West Virginians rose to the occasion and showed him the respect due a president making such a voyage. They were grateful that he came and demonstrated that important people who aren't from the state cared. I hope he learned that those hard-working people are fundamentally good hearted, and I hope they learned that he cares more about them than they thought.The problem in the future will be that the corporate interests that run the state will, after a decent interval of respectfulness, revert to form. Right now, the people of the state want a transparent and honest investigation. There's no reason this administration shouldn't want to give them that. And if it does, and if it finds what many folks suspect it might find, Blankenship and company will start screaming about how Obama is mounting a frontal assault on their livelihood and way of life. Italian bass renowned for his portrayal of Mozart's Don GiovanniDuring the 1950s and 60s, Cesare Siepi, who has died aged 87, was the most sought-after of Italian basses, renowned for his Don Giovanni, a role he undertook in most of the world's major houses. He was indeed the natural successor in the part to the legendary Ezio Pinza, and like Pinza he graced the stage of the Salzburg Festival with his portrayal.There is a permanent record of the occasion in the film made at the festival in 1953 (now available on DVD), with Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting Mozart's opera. In it, as at Covent Garden a few years later in Franco Zeffirelli's famed production, Siepi held the stage as a handsome figure, in the mould of Errol Flynn with the attendant sex appeal, although the interpretation overlooked the more saturnine side of Giovanni's nature so prominent in today's performances of the part.Milan-born, Siepi joined a madrigal choir, devoted to Monteverdi, there when he was 14, and made his concert debut when only 17. He went on to study at the Milan music academy, after winning a scholarship, while earning his keep as a bank-teller. He made his stage debut as early as 1941, as Sparafucile in Rigoletto at Schio, near Vicenza. He fled to Switzerland in 1943 to avoid being conscripted by the Nazi occupying forces. Returning to Italy in 1945, he sang Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco that year at Venice, and the following year took the same role in his auspicious debut at La Scala in his home city. Belgians are just like the EU with its eurozone crisis: neighbours united by history and politics – and mutual resentmentFor a long time, it seemed as if Belgium was the cuckoo in the nest of the European Union: the state that could muster neither a hard core of cohesive national pride like most of its neighbours, nor the will to split apart, as the Czechs and the Slovaks did. But as the financial crisis has devolved into the euro crisis, it is becoming clear Belgium is actually emblematic of the EU, as a polity of diverse groups of people bound together by history, law, politics, common sense and mutual need – who fundamentally do not like each other.The euro crisis can be seen either as an economic problem with geopolitical implications, or else as a geopolitical problem with economic consequences. On the whole, politicians and commentators have stuck firmly with the former interpretation – which is hardly surprising since they have largely been quoting economists. It is also easier to believe the problem is just a matter of austerity measures, shock-and-awe bailout packages, and market turbulence. Charismatic and eloquent, their call for an authentic western Islam has resonated with their young audiences.They are likely to emphasise their commonalities next week, but Yusuf and Ramadan approach religious revival from different traditions and locations. Our friend Gillian Sandford, who has died of cancer aged 54, was one of those women journalists in the 1980s whose independent spirit took them to far-flung corners of the world to report with distinction from danger zones. In later years, she worked for aid agencies in Darfur and Afghanistan.Brought up in Bath, Gillian began her career as a news reporter for provincial newspapers in Devon, then the north-east, soon gaining a name nationally and securing scholarships to Japan, Iceland, France and Germany. Her first lengthy overseas job was in the US, where she worked as a reporter for a news agency and later as a staff reporter for US News and World Report in Washington.Gillian covered the Balkans for several years. She worked for a spell as a war correspondent for Time and also for the Guardian. Based in Belgrade, she led a small team reporting on the Kosovo conflict. Six years ago she was engaged by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (the international media development charity) and trained Afghan journalists in Kabul. She supported them on stories that were part of a weekly internet-based news service that were also translated into Dari and Pashtu and printed by Afghan papers. A year later, she was employed as a communications specialist to the director of ACT-Caritas, one of the biggest aid operations in south and west Darfur.During her time in the UK, she was foreign editor of the Yorkshire Post for five years, and deputy news editor of the now-defunct European newspaper. My film is a buddy movie, and it comes from a place of love, warmth and affectionThe Infidel is really a buddy movie: to begin with, both Omid Djalili's character Mahmud, a Muslim, and Jewish cabbie Lenny are pretty racist, with very set ideas about each other's culture. But then Mahmud discovers that he was born a Jew and asks Lenny for help finding out about the religion. As they begin to like each other, their old ideas break down.The idea for the film came, in part, out of my own ethnic ambiguity. At school, a lot of people thought I was from Pakistan; I was bullied by racists both for being Pakistani and for being Jewish. Then, when I started out on TV, I got fanmail from Indians saying I was the best Indian comedian they had ever seen. Now that the two communities are so politically polarised, The Infidel's body-swap premise feels timely.I'm sure there might be some people out there who want to be angry about the movie, but I'm not worried about a backlash: we've shown it to groups of very devout Muslims, and so far they've been very positive. The important thing is that the film has a normal British Muslim family at the centre of it – they're both likable and flawed, and not defined only by their religion.There are some things that might upset Jewish people – such as a satirical scene in which Mahmud goes undercover at a bar mitzvah, and two divorcees hand him a petition in support of Israel. The big drama also comes when Mahmud and Lenny fall out over Israel – but that scene reflects the fact that Israel really is the elephant in the room in relations between Muslims and Jews. El Salvador finally honours its heroic Jesuits, but is this a fillip for Central America's liberation theologists, or an epitaph?This weekend, the government of El Salvador will issue a formal apology for its persecution of the Jesuit order during the bloody civil war of the 1980s. This comes a couple of months after the honouring six priests, killed 20 years ago. For all the murdered priests, nuns, catechists and ordinary churchgoers it's all a little late, but it's still pretty incredible news given the scale of the search for reconciliation and justice that this country still faces nearly 20 years since the shooting stopped.The Jesuits have been torch bearers of liberation theology in Latin America, and in a wider sense the accolade was a recognition of not just them, but their controversial belief system. Emerging in the 60s as a fusion of socialist theory and religious devotion, liberation theology put the poor at the heart of the church's mission. It aimed to remake society in the image of Christ's example, confronting injustice and inequality. It offered utopia, the construction of a socialist paradise on earth. But while filming in Central America for a documentary looking at the religious map here, despite the belated recognition for the Jesuits, I've had to ask the question: what has become of those hopes?For a brief period in the early 1980s, it looked like liberation theology might be on the verge of creating the just, egalitarian society it envisaged. The revolutionary Sandinista government that took power in Nicaragua in 1979 included several liberation theology priests. Veteran communist politician who nearly became prime minister of IndiaJyoti Basu, who has died aged 95, was one of the last Indian politicians whose careers started before the end of British rule. He was a stalwart of the much-fractured communist movement, but his devout socialism was tempered by pragmatism and an unerring political instinct. He was chief minister of his beloved West Bengal state for more than 23 continuous years – longer by far than any other chief minister of any Indian state.That remarkable tenure was made possible by Basu's towering popularity, the result of seven decades of public and political service, most of it in Kolkata (or Calcutta, as it was known for most of his long life). He could have gone to the very top, as India's first communist prime minister in the mid-1990s, but his chance evaporated when his Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) decided to boycott the United Front coalition, which went on to rule under HD Deve Gowda of the Janata Dal. Basu thought the boycott a calamitous mistake, but true to style he remained steadfastly loyal to his party.Jyoti Kiran Basu (the middle name was quickly dropped) was born into a well-to-do Hindu family. His father, a respectable doctor, was later horrified by Jyoti's choice of a political career, and even more by his choice of party. But the boy's early years were comfortably uneventful. He was educated in private schools and graduated from Presidency College, Kolkata, before sailing to Britain in 1935 to study law.There, he became fascinated by leftist theory and practice. He attended lectures by Harold Laski, and got involved with the Communist Party of Great Britain. I will do everything I can to secure a referendum to let the people decide on electoral reformThere is a paradox at the heart of our politics today. Never has the need for politics to effect change been greater, but never has trust in politicians and the political process been at a lower ebb. People across Britain are still outraged by the expenses crisis, and by what they regard as a betrayal of trust by some of their elected representatives. Many of our citizens either do not vote at all or have been tempted by the fringes and the extremes. That is why I believe that the way we do politics needs to change. And it is why I believe now is the time to take action.Since 1997, we have delivered devolution to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We have provided a mayor for London. We have created the independent supreme court, and guaranteed individual liberties through the Human Rights Act. We have created an independent regulator for parliamentary standards. Next we are ending the outdated hereditary principle in the House of Lords. These are important changes of which progressives can be proud. But the cause of renewing our politics has been put back by the damage of the expenses scandal.That is why I want to launch a rallying call for a new progressive politics. To be blunt, we need to give politics back to the people. We need the people to know it's their parliament, not ours. As part of this I believe it is time to look afresh at the electoral system.
