jun'ichiro uemae, well known in japan as the author of the book yomu kusuri (the medicine of reading), introduced his readers to the practice method of noriaki kiguchi, the 57-kilogram weight class a11-japan universitv wrestling champion, called the plus-one rule. ' kiguchi teaches at three universities, including his own alma mater, hosei university, and always says that it is no good trying to do exercises dozens of times from the start, whether it is training the abdominal muscles or bending and stretching.what is essential, he says, is to do the exercises ten times on the first day and then stop, while still feeling you could actuallv do many' more. the next day, do
them eleven times, then on the next day twelve, and so on. this way even a nonathletic type can work up to one hundred reptitions a session. this method emphasizes the importance of continuity. thus this episode, too, with its cannotation of “perfuming” teaches the importance of reptition in deligent practice. kiguchi has another “plus one”training method. on the first day, you take the morning newspaper into your outstretched hands and then hold your breath for thirty seconds. on the second day, have gained conciderable physicalstrengs, and after thirty days you can hold one month's supply of newspapers quiteeasily. this contrasts with how hold two newspapers, on the third day three, and so on. by the fifteenth day you will most of us go about physical training, buying machines and weights with great determination, but probably very soon letting our practice slide.if repetition and perseverance are important for physical training, they are equally so when training the mind. we cannot physically see the mind being perfumed, and so it is all the easier to neglect its training. indeed, this is what influences whether people are happy or unhappy. therefore, it is of great importance that we do a little bit each day, as the plus-one method advises, placing our hands togethar before the buddha and perhaps reciting just one chapter of a sutra or encouraging others with a friendly smile and affectionate words.

in thee i bear so dear a part, by love so firm, so firm am thine, that each affection of thy heart by sympathy is mine. 貴方の中で私はこれほどいとおしく一部分を担っています、 愛によってこれほど堅固に貴方のものとなるのです
- カルメル気付き事項記録(9/3と4)
i feel toward you only deep and tender affection. but i am no longer that little lamb. i am now a daughter of carmel, who will suffer for your sake, and whom i now ask you to accept, once and for all, as a companion in battle. for we are going into battle, each in our own way; and mine has its risks and its dangers, the same as yours.
