Animal rights activists jailed for harrassing lab suppliers Activists waged campaign of abuse and intimidation against people linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences, court toldFive animal rights activists who waged a campaign of abuse, harassment and blackmail against staff linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences were sentenced to between 15 months and six years in prison today. The campaign included hoax bombs posted to the homes and offices of staff, criminal damage, threats of violence and abusive telephone calls.Sarah Whitehead, 53, Nicole Vosper, 22, Thomas Harris, 27, Jason Mullan, 32, and Nicola Tapping, 29, were all members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac).A sixth member of the conspiracy, Alfie Fitzpatrick, at 21 the youngest member of the group, received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years and was ordered to complete 100 hours of community work. The sentencing hearing at Winchester crown court was told that the six waged a wide-ranging international conspiracy of intimidation against a host of supply companies to force the closure of Cambridge-based HLS, using Shac as a front. Some company directors had leaflets distributed near their home falsely telling neighbours they were convicted paedophiles and others had used tampons sent through the post saying the blood was HIV positive. The activists daubed words such as puppy killer, murderer and scum on the houses, cars and nearby roads of those they targeted. The abuse would only stop when the company issued a capitulation statement on the Shac website and cut links with the lab.The total cost of the damage and increased security to about 40 companies targeted was £12.6m, the court heard. The six were part of a larger conspiracy involving the founder members of Shac, Gregg and Natasha Avery and Heather Nicholson, who used the organisation as a front to intimidate

French lessons: pension protests | Editorial As the welfare state is rolled back all over Europe, a cause is being fought in France which we would do well to watchThere is at least one difference between May '68 and what has been happening in France for the last 11 days. In '68 the protest by workers and students erupted after a prolonged period of unprecedented economic growth. Today mass protest follows decades of high unemployment – particularly for the young. In the last two years it has risen by 17% for the under-25s. The social ladder in France is broken. Little wonder that among the millions of demonstrators who have turned out against President Nicolas Sarkozy's pension reforms – at one point one in 20 of all the people in France – tens of thousands are sixth-formers. Behind the pensions revolt is a deep fear of unemployment which will only be worsened by workers delaying retirement. Before we in Britain scoff too quickly at the French for racing to the barricades to preserve a pension system which, to our eyes, looks generous, it is worth being clear about what is being fought over and what is not. There is a broad consensus, and has been for at least seven years, that the French pension system is bust. In a pay-as-you-go system, too few active workers are paying for too many pensioners. As the number of pensioners is set to increase from 15 million in 2008 to nearly 23 million in 2050, the ratio of active workers to pensioners will reduce still further. Depending on both the rate of long-term unemployment and labour productivity, the deficit in the state pension system, currently running at €32bn or 1.7% of GDP, could explode in the next decade to reach something more like 3% of GDP. That is a lot for any state to pay on pensions. The issue is not whether this system should be reformed but how. Why can't we protest against cuts like the French? Many thousands have protested in France against cuts; we have a proud history of dissent in Britain, so why aren't we on the streets?A few years ago, the French president Nicolas Sarkozy told an interviewer that he knew the French better than most. Today they were admiring the good looks of his wife; tomorrow they would cut his throat. It hasn't quite come to that just yet, but the French – students and workers, men and women, citizens all – are out on the streets again. A rise in the pension age? Impossible. The barricades are up, oil supplies running out, trains and planes on a skeleton schedule and the protests are still escalating. More than three million people a week ago. Hundreds of thousands out this week and more expected this weekend. And what a joyous sight: school students marching in defence of old people's rights. Were there a Michelin Great Protest guide, France would still be top with three stars, with Greece a close second with two stars. What a contrast with the miserable, measly actions being planned by the lily-livered English trade unions. There is growing anger and bitterness here too, but it is being recuperated by a petrified bureaucracy. A ritual protest has been planned, largely to demonstrate that they are doing something. But is this something better than nothing?Perhaps. I'm not totally sure. But even these mild attempts to rally support against the austerity measures are too much for dear leader Ed Miliband. He won't be seen at them. The rot of Blairism goes deep in the Labour party. A crushing defeat last year might have produced something a bit better than the shower that constitutes the front bench. Balls the bulldog might have gone for the jugular but he has been neutered. Instead, the new front bench is desperate to prove that it could

Anglo-French defence pact: The two musketeers | Editorial Neither France nor Britain can afford the role they want to play in the world. Yesterday's deal was pragmaticBritain and France account for nearly half of all military spending in the EU, half of the total number of armed forces and 70% of military research and development. Together they make up a critical mass of Europe's military capabilities. But neither country can afford the role it has carved out for itself. Nor can they keep up with the Joneses – in this case the Americans. So it makes eminent pragmatic sense for the two countries to start pooling resources, which is what happened yesterday.Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron announced a deal in London which would create joint testing and developing centres for nuclear weapons, and a joint expeditionary taskforce. Considering how neuralgic the issue of Europe was to the Conservatives in opposition, it is ironic that a Tory prime minister has agreed to share aircraft carriers and squadrons of fast jets, and synchronise nuclear submarine patrols, with the very people that fellow Tories refuse out of principle to sit in the same European parliamentary group with.Of course Mr Cameron had to go out of his way to state explicitly what the Lancaster House deal was not: it was not about a European army, and the two countries were not going to share nuclear deterrents. The two countries will share the same super-fast computer to simulate a nuclear test, but not the data garnered from it, if one can believe that. Mr Sarkozy also had to perform a pas de deux around the issue of sovereignty. As co-operation develops and deepens in the next 50 years, the distinction between the two nations sharing military resources (currently a taboo word) and allowing operations on each other's aircraft carriers, or refuelling planes from eac

France loves sex, but not on the front page | Claude Soula The Frank Ribery affair has seen the French press nervously enter uncharted watersThe first thing I did last Thursday was grab the latest edition of Paris Match, one of the oldest names of the French press. It's a weekly magazine which has always tried to do things quite uncommon in France; that is mixing the serious and the not so serious. It has sex – but usually only when the people want to make things known – and also politics. It is here that people announce their wedding, but it was also here that we learned that Cecilia Sarkozy had left Nicolas for a certain Richard. This turned out to be a sad episode in the life of Paris Match, because even if that cover on the love life of our then soon-to-be-president offered one of its best sales ever, the chief editor was sacked by the owner for having dared to publish this story without asking the permission of Sarkozy himself. It says a lot about the French press that its freedom to write about sex and privacy is quite limited. There are two reasons for this. The first is that judges forbid us to write on privacy. But the second is that the editors who have the guts to try to publish put themselves at risk. Their owners go to the same clubs and went to the same school as politicians and no one wants to break the rules. So when Arnaud Lagardère, the owner of Paris Match, ousted the editor no one was surprised. No such thing as a tabloid exists in France because they won't publish anything too salacious. There has been no such thing as a sex scandal in France and so no politician was ever be put in danger by a prostitute. Our late François Mitterrand had his double life, his double family, his double children kept secret. And before him President Giscard d'Estaing had also mistresses and full discretion. Protest in France: Reform and reaction | Editorial This is a make-or-break moment for the unions and for Nicolas Sarkozy, who sees a pensions victory as the centrepiece of a range of reformsFrench unions were out on the streets yesterday hoping to repeat their past success in defeating plans to reduce the pension entitlement of French workers. After all, they forced a previous president, Jacques Chirac, to retreat on pensions, as well as bringing down one of his prime ministers on the issue. So this is a make-or-break moment for the unions and for Nicolas Sarkozy, who sees a pensions victory as the centrepiece of a range of reforms which will transform his faltering presidency. As the French assembly begins an extraordinary session to decide on changes to the pensions system, while the senate considers budget cuts, a new security law and a law to ban the burqa, there is a sense that France faces dangerous choices. If the reforms go through unmodified the country will have diluted welfare state achievements and cut its responsibilities to citizens, at the same time as it becomes a more hard-faced society for migrants and minorities. On the other hand, if Sarkozy's reforms are derailed, that could wreck what remains of his presidency and might even bring about the credit downgrading which all European governments fear so much.Sarkozy wants to raise the age at which workers can choose to retire by two years to 62 and the age when they get a full pension from 65 to 67. France's pension provisions are more generous than those of most of its neighbours. Trimming them a little might seem to outsiders not unreasonable, given that the pensions burden is steadily becoming less sustainable as the ratio of retirees to people in work worsens, which it is doing everywhere in Europe. But that is to ignore the French left's fear that an

More than a euro crisis | Dan Roberts With talk of the breakup of the single currency, global financial strife may be only just beginningFrance threatens to leave the euro. German savers hoard gold. The Bundesbank works on a plan B to restore the Deutsche Mark. It's fair to say even a $1 trillion bailout hasn't been enough to stop the rumour mill dogging the European single currency this week. How much truth there is to these rumours we'll probably never know. The Elysée was predictably playing down reports of Nicolas Sarkozy's threat yesterday. A spike in gold prices to more than ¤1,000 an ounce can only be partly due to Germans buying gold coins, and if the Bundesbank does have a plan B, it won't be telling the blogosphere first. But, for once, the conspiracy theorists may not be entirely off beam. The trouble with Europe's debt crisis is the same as the debt crisis everywhere: it just won't go away. And until it does, the future of the euro remains as uncertain as the rest of the global financial system. The Europe Union has responded to member states like Greece that can't afford to pay their debts in the same way world leaders responded to a crisis among bankrupt banks – by lending them more money. It doesn't take a financial genius to work out that this can only ever buy time. All the while, political protests rise. Last week riots in Athens killed three people. This week police blamed left-wing militants for planting two bombs. Across Europe, voters are either asking why they should be asked to pay for the rescue package, worrying whether they might be next to need one – or both.Paul Volcker, president Obama's top financial adviser, sounded particularly gloomy this week. Speaking at a lunch in London, he questioned whether political camaraderie in Europe was strong enough to contain these centrifugal for
David Cameron's Turkophilia faces an uphill struggle | Denis MacShane Key partners in the European Union are out of step with Cameron's positive stance towards the accession of TurkeyDavid Cameron's adoption of Tony Blair's Turkophile diplomacy in Ankara today should be welcomed. In 2004, in his last great surge of geopolitical activity, Blair single-handedly moved the European council to agree a start date for EU accession negotiations for Turkey.I was there as he patrolled the night-time corridors in the sterile Brussels office block where EU councils are held. He knocked recalcitrant heads together, helped by an able Turkophone diplomatist, Peter Westmacott, until his fellow EU leaders finally said yes to entry talks. Then, Blair had powerful allies. Germany and Spain were under left leadership and backed Turkey's bid. France's Jacques Chirac, true to the pro-Turkey tradition of General de Gaulle, also backed Blair.Today Cameron faces a different EU political landscape. German and French government politicians are hostile to Turkey joining the EU. Cameron's decision to walk out of the main centre-right political group where Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, plus most other ruling EU parties, confer means that Britain's voice is absent in the key EU political debate on Turkey. Cameron's main EU partner is the recently defeated Polish catholic nationalist, Jaroslaw Kaczynski. He fought to get the Lisbon treaty amended to include a reference to Europe's Christian origins. Such politics do not play well in Muslim Turkey. Moreover, Cameron has pledged a referendum on any major new EU treaty and a final decision to let Turkey in will require a significant new EU treaty. If that is submitted to a referendum, as Cameron and William Hague have pledged, the chances of it being passed are slim. The increasingly anti-Muslim Ukip is moving towards an
French niqab ban: Beneath the veil | Editorial The twin test must be, first, whether the measure has a legimate aim and, second, whether it shows proportionalityThe lower house of the French parliament passed a law on Tuesday which, according to the interior ministry, would directly effect fewer than 2,000 people out of a population of 64 million. This alone is worth digesting before considering that the people concerned are Muslim women who wear a full-face veil, or niqab. The authors of the legislation banning the wearing of the niqab in public directed their grandiloquent claims at this tiny target group. The French justice minister, Michèle Alliot-Marie, said on the eve of Bastille Day that the vote was a success for the Republic. France, she went on, is never so great, never so respected as when it is united around its values.Set to one side legal doubts about whether this law is compatible with guarantees of religious freedom and equality, as interpreted by France's constitutional council. In principle – and, indeed, in the forum of the European court of human rights – the twin test must be whether the measure, first, has a legitimate aim (public security or promotion of gender equality, perhaps) and, second, whether it shows proportionality. Is the measure proportionate to the aim being achieved? This, say legal experts, presents the sticking point. And cast aside, for one moment, questions about whether the niqab demeans women or whether the practice is inherently Islamic. (Some scholars say all that is required by Islamic law is modesty in dress, and there is no requirement to cover the face). President Nicolas Sarkozy said the niqab degraded women and many will agree. But that is not how the legislation has been framed. It makes the dress illegal on the grounds that it constitutes a challenge to public ord ツインテストは、最初に、かどうかを測定し、2番目かどうか、それは日が、内務省によると、直接2,000人のうちより少ない影響とする法律を可決フランス議会のproportionalityThe衆院shows legimate目的があるということがあります6400万の人口の
The Roma: Europe's pariah people The Roma lost out when Eastern Europe prospered after its release from Soviet dominationThe Roma, the EU's biggest ethnic minority, scattered across a dozen countries, are Europe's pariah people. Thanks to Nicolas Sarkozy, they are a lot less forgotten and ignored than they were a fortnight ago.The outrage stirred by France's policy of getting EU citizens to sign papers, give them 300 euros, have police escort them on to planes back to Bucharest and Sofia, and call them volunteers has shone a spotlight on the fate of the estimated 12 million Roma in the EU, the vast majority of them in the Balkans and central Europe. In the democratic revolutions that released that region from Soviet domination 20 years ago, the Roma were the big losers. For most people, democracy brought new liberties, higher living standards and integration with the west. It also brought populist Gypsy-bashing, scapegoating, ghettoes, forced sterilisation, and the sending of their offspring to schools for children with learning difficulties. With Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic all in the EU and all home to large Roma populations, the Gypsies are now EU citizens, too, and have the right to go wherever they like. Now eastern Europe's crisis is morphing into western Europe's Gypsy dilemma, increasing the chances of something being done about it. France is hardly alone. The Austrians, the Danes, the Swedes and the Italians have been expelling European Roma immigrants. The Germans are preparing to kick out 12,000.But much more quietly, not seeking to make political capital the way Sarkozy, his Rottweiler Europe minister, Pierre Lellouche, and others have been successfully stealing votes from the extreme right and improving their ratings by explicitly blaming the Roma for prostitu

Le Monde: Judgment of Paris | Editorial If there is one small consolation for a British press faced with declining sales – it is that things are worse in FranceIf there is one small consolation for a British press faced with declining sales, a generation going through schools and universities which is reading fewer newspapers, falling advertising revenues, and an uncertain internet future – it is that things are worse in France. The flagship of French journalism, Le Monde, is subsiding under the weight of a €100m debt and would not have been able to pay the wages next month unless a buyer was found. Le Parisien is up for sale; La Tribune is looking for a majority investor and Libération is facing a cash crisis.Of these, Le Monde is in the worst position. The newspaper has been controlled by its journalists for almost half a century, but that is not how an investment bank saw it recently. It valued its major assets as its website and its printing press at €67m and €63m respectively, and the newspaper where all of its editorial firepower lies at only €10m. Some commentators believe that, despite redesigns, the inclusion of pictures and the reluctant shedding of some of its many words, Le Monde journalists were something of a dying breed: over-reliant on public subsidy, slow to embrace the internet, sold on the myth that the brand was too beautiful to fail. And yet the quality of their journalism and coverage of international affairs would put many of their British colleagues to shame. With his own re-election coming up in two years' time, Nicolas Sarkozy showed an unhealthy interest in the ownership of Le Monde, summoning its editor-in-chief to the Elysée Palace. This proved to be one of the factors which convinced Le Monde's journalists to vote overwhelmingly for the bid that the president did his best to sink.

Chanel fashion show: iceberg chic sends chill down Paris catwalk Fake fur, crystal-edged chiffon and an iceberg from Sweden dazzle shivering fashionistas at autumn/winter extravaganzaIn the morning, Karl Lagerfeld received a phone call from President Nicolas Sarkozy informing him that he is to be made a commander of the French legion of honour, one of the highest decorations the French government can bestow. In the afternoon he was overseeing the small matter of having an iceberg shipped back to Sweden. In between he found time to stage a Chanel fashion show. But fashion show is perhaps the wrong title for the truly spectacular Chanel extravaganzas that have become a pivotal moment in each Paris fashion week. The audience arrived at the Grand Palais to find the vast, glass-domed building even colder than usual. The reason for this was concealed under a huge white box, which sat plum in the middle of the banks of seating. As the show began, the box was lifted to reveal a real iceberg. The licence to import it had been granted only on the basis that it was returned to its original spot intact. The iceberg – along with the polar bear sketched on to the front of the invitation – were a clue to the collection, which was dubbed Shackleton Chic by the time the audience filed out. Yeti boots and fur-trimmed coats made for a winter collection that looked distinctly attractive to the shivering audience, particularly once word spread that all the fur in the show was fake.Fur hotpants and tailored fur trousers will fail to appeal to most, even without ethical concerns, but this hardly matters: what you see on the catwalk is show business, and what you will see in the shop will no doubt be edited and refined. This was a particularly strong collection, with fringed wool shifts, extravagantly sculpted knits and crystal-edged chiffon cocktail dresses b
Siddharta at Opéra Bastille | Dance review Opéra Bastille, ParisThis new ballet about the Buddha from one of France's most distinguished choreographers, Angelin Preljocaj, has been sold out for weeks – and with good reasonParis Opéra Ballet premieres are must-attend events in the city's cultural calendar, and tickets for Angelin Preljocaj's Siddharta had been sold out for weeks when the piece opened on Thursday. The son of Albanian immigrants, 53-year-old Preljocaj is one of France's most distinguished choreographers, with a quarter-century of challenging and often luxuriantly beautiful works to his name. His best-known creation, now something of a signature piece for the Paris Opéra Ballet, is Le Parc (1994), a sensuous promenade through 17th-century art, literature and erotic intrigue set to Mozart adagios.Siddharta describes the spiritual journey of the Indian prince who would become the Buddha. At the ballet's opening we discover him at an opulent court celebration, where his father is urging him to assume his princely responsibilities. Unwilling to do so, Siddharta (Nicolas Le Riche) retires to the river to meditate. There he has a vision of his own spiritual awakening, in the form of a beautiful woman (Aurélie Dupont), surrounded by handmaidens.Renouncing his former life, Siddharta dedicates himself to this vision, and he and his cousin Ananda (Stéphane Bullion) vow to live an ascetic existence. They weaken, however, and fall prey to two temptresses. Filled with remorse, the two men mortify themselves, and Siddharta is once again inspired by a vision of his ideal, who shimmers just out of reach. Finally, acknowledging that all earthly attachments are illusory, he achieves transcendence. Those familiar with Swan Lake will note the many thematic echoes, and in its presentation of women as either agents of red
The real problem with the Tories' EU alliance | Tim Bale Media interest in the 'extremism' of the Conservatives' EU allies obscures the issue of disunity within the ECR groupingAs a clutch of stories this weekend showed, no article on the Tories and Europe is now considered complete without at least a nod to the apparent extremism of the other parties involved in their new party group in the European Parliament, the ECR. Although the mud hasn't really stuck, in the sense of impinging on the consciousness of the average voter, it's one of those stories that never quite seems to go away.Yet the way that the media have handled the question – aided and abetted by the politicians themselves – obscures the more fundamental downsides of David Cameron's decision to honour a promise that at least some Conservatives wish he'd never made.As regards the reported phobias of their new allies, we can only say that in parts of central and eastern Europe the conservative-nationalist right is a continuum running from radical to moderate – categories between which there is often more fluidity and overlap than there is in the west. This is almost bound to produce some serious embarrassment. But it is inaccurate to portray the other members of the ECR as extreme rather than mainstream, at least in the context of their own political cultures. As for the more fundamental risks and problems posed to the Conservatives (and to any UK government they may shortly head up), these are unlikely to include Angela Merkel or Nicolas Sarkozy (or even, as some have suggested, Barack Obama) literally cold-shouldering Cameron. National interest, after all, normally triumphs over personal pique. That said, the Tories' decision to set up the ECR is already having practical consequences, most obviously in the European parliament itself. Letters: Tourism is essential to Africa's economy Your article (Africa needs more than latter-day Livingstones, 3 January) ignored the excellent work being conducted by Abta tour operators to ensure that their activities ensure fair and equitable benefits for local people. It is untrue that these activities merely line the pockets of tour operators and destination governments. We work with our members specifically in the area of responsible tourism, which has come on in leaps and bounds. Tour operators and tourism in Africa create jobs, preserve biodiversity and culture by giving it an economic value, and enhance local infrastructure. The benefits reach far beyond the game reserves and national parks. Almost every excursion programme in Africa now ensures that beneficial linkages are created into the local community and economy. If the above developments of the industry and consumer were mirrored by travel writers, we would be able to encourage greater participation in community engagement and benefit projects by visitors to countries all around the globe.Nicola WhiteAbta/FTO (Federation of Tour Operators)• Your article rightly highlights that more of the income from tourism needs to get to local people. But it fails to emphasise just how vital tourism is to the economy of many of Africa's poorest countries. Tourism brings much-needed income and employment and, unlike most other industries, it has the potential to benefit people in rural areas simply because of where it takes place. Done well, it can conserve endangered species and their habitats by raising awareness of just how special these animals and places are, while also providing an economic alternative to hunting. That's why the Travel Foundation is working with many travel companies.
