    • Never mind the bullfights | Rosa Montero
Our Spanish character has changed – we've left the xenophobic machismo of the Franco era behindStereotypes stick in the mind like parasites: it's easier to increase a country's GDP per head twelvefold – in the last 40 years Spain's has gone from $2,413 to $29,651 – than to eliminate our neighbours' prejudices about us.Take the business of women murdered by their partners. I'm sick of repeating, to the amazement of foreigners and Spaniards alike, that if the issue of domestic violence seems ever present in the country, it's not because we're rampant barbarians who kill more women than anyone else; on the contrary it's because Spain has led the way in recognising and taking a stand against this savage behaviour. Moreover, according to the Reina Sofía Centre's third international report on violence against women, which analyses 40 countries (others, including the likes of France, are not included because they don't publish data on male violence), Spain comes in last place for the number of female murders, with 3.5 deaths per million inhabitants a year.In the United States the level is 9.1 per million; in Germany, 4.6 per million; in Britain, 4.4; in Norway, 5.5 per million; in Finland, 9.6. In the cool-headed, civilised, fair-minded countries of the north, there are far more victims. For many it would be more fitting if Spain – the land of bullfighting – was also notable for cutting the throats of its red-blooded womenfolk, as depicted in the opera Carmen – written, lest you forget, by French composer Georges Bizet – but the ineluctable fact is that the Nordic peoples are, according to the data, much more prolific killers.I wonder if this could be the result of a deadly mix of higher alcohol consumption with a bitterness engendered by the progress of feminism in th 私たちのスペイン語の文字が変更されている - 私たちはフランコ時代behindStereotypesの外国人嫌いの男らしさを残してきた寄生虫のような心に固執:それは頭twelvefoldあたりのGDPを増加させる方が簡単です - スペインのは、2413ドルと29651ドルから消えている最後の40年間で - よりについての彼らのパートナーによって殺害女性の業務をus.

    • Eurosceptic True Finns party surprise contender in Finnish election
Populist far right party led by Timo Soini is neck and neck with main parties after threats to block Portuguese bailoutFinland votes on Sunday in its most closely watched general election in years, with the campaign hijacked by a Eurosceptic maverick riding roughshod over the consensus that has long characterised the country's politics.Timo Soini has alarmed the European and Finnish elites by leading his True Finns party into a neck-and-neck position with the three mainstream parties that traditionally dominate Finnish politics. The quadrupling of support for the True Finns since the last election in 2007 puts Finland firmly in line with the cardinal trend in politics across Europe in the past year – the emergence of the populist far right combining nostalgia for disappearing values and traditions with anti-immigrant and anti-EU appeal. An opinion poll on Friday put the True Finns at around 16% in a coalition system, soaring from 4% in 2007 albeit sliding a little from their position in surveys last week. That put True Finns neck and neck with the Centre party of the prime minister, Mari Kiviniemi, and the opposition social democrats, and a few points behind the poll leaders, the National Coalition party led by the finance minister, Jyrki Katainen. The campaign has highlighted the impact of the year-long crisis of the euro single currency sparked by sovereign debt emergencies among the weakest of its 17 members. The euro crisis has felled two governments – in Ireland and Portugal, sapped support for chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany, and triggered bailouts of Greece, Ireland, and Portugal to the tune of €270 bn (£239bn).Soini has run a popular campaign threatening to block the Portuguese bailout, sparking alarm in Brussels and elsewhere. The National Coalition party, tippe ティモSoini率いる人。

    • Raise high the crucifix! | Andrew Brown
The attempt to drive religious symbols from Italian classrooms was wrong and potentially disastrous. We should be glad it failedThe decision of the European court of Human Rights that Italian schools may continue to display a crucifix in the classroom is obviously a victory for common sense, which only fanatics would disapprove. But it is also, in a small way, something to help rescue the European project, and to preserve us from the wilder excesses of American political life. The idea that human rights legislation should be used to prevent children from being exposed to a crucifix is a profoundly totalitarian and superstitious perversion of one of our civilisation's best inventions. To understand why, consider another family which would want their children protect from crucifixes, but this time not secular Finns, but Muslims. They exist. One Shia Muslim girl I know was not allowed as a child to walk through much of the Victoria & Albert museum, because to do so would expose her to Christian symbolism. My family thought this was ridiculous and no doubt secularists would be a great deal ruder about it than that. But by the logic of superstition it was completely undeniable: Christian art had a magical power which might weaken her Muslim identity, so she must be protected from this contagion. Of course this line of argument is entirely atavistic and has nothing to do with reason or liberalism. The trouble is that it is the same kind of argument that is used to pretend that a crucifix in a classroom will somehow corrupt the children exposed to its baleful presence. And if a secularist is able to protest against the presence of a crucifix in a classroom on the grounds that it breaches her children's human rights, why shouldn't a Muslim bring a lawsuit against the V&A for dis

    • Blow for tourism as Irish hotels third dearest in Europe
Alcohol in Ireland is the most expensive in Europe while the cost of staying in a hotel or eating out is the third highest. How can tourism ever recover?Ireland is desperate to get tourists back into the country and for a moment it looked like everything was on track with the worldwide publicity generated by the Queen and President Obama's visits and surveys left, right, and centre showing hotel prices have never been cheaper. Then along comes pesky Eurostat and undoes all of that. Statistics released by the European commission agency show that prices for hotels and restaurants in Ireland for 2010 were the third highest in Europe – just behind Denmark and Sweden and on a par with Finland. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are the second dearest in Europe (just behind Denmark). Worse, Eurostat is reporting that Ireland has the highest prices in Europe for alcohol. None of this comes as a surprise to anyone living in Ireland where a bottle of average plonk that might cost £4.99 in the UK, costs €10.99 (£9.99) or a pint of lager that might cost £3.50 costs at least a fiver. But it might come as a bit of a surprise to the Irish government, tourist boards and the hotel bodies who are still woefully deluded about the cost of holidaying in Ireland.IrelandLisa O'Carrollguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Letters: Another rod to beat the nuclear industry
It's hardly a surprise that building nuclear power stations on seismic fault lines, as Japan has done, turns out to be a foolish thing. The Fukushima disaster may mean meltdown or worse, but what it will certainly mean is extra expense (Disaster in Japan, 14 March). Nuclear has always been an expensive white elephant. UK taxpayers subsidise nuclear to the tune of £1bn a year. Half the civil servants at the Department of Energy work on nuclear power, which makes a mockery of energy secretary Chris Huhne's claim that no public money will be spent on new nuclear. A report by the US Union of Concerned Scientists last month said nuclear power in the US had never operated without public subsidies. The cost of decommissioning old nuclear in the UK is estimated to be at least £73bn. Surely, therefore, anyone wishing to provide new nuclear should have to put that sort of sum into an upfront clean-up fund. But of course they can't possibly afford to. Nuclear power is uninsurable. It's too risky and the potential payouts are too big. The taxpayer will have to pay, as we did to bail out the banks.Only two nuclear power stations are under construction in western Europe: one in France and one in Finland. The Finnish reactor – supposed to be the first of a new generation of safe and affordable units – is being subsidised by the French nuclear industry as a loss leader in the hope that it will spark a new nuclear building boom. The project has been plagued with cost overruns and delays, is under investigation by the Finnish nuclear safety regulator and is probably the single best reason why new nuclear is a mistake.Alexis RowellDirector, cuttingthecarbonNuclear powerEnergyJapanJapan earthquake and tsunamiChris HuhneFinlandguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of

    • Pizza – the latest weapon of protest
Pizza joint gets orders from around the world to feed anti-cuts demonstrators in WisconsinSolidarity, as Middle Eastern potentates are quickly discovering, is a powerful thing. And it can take some rather unusual forms. One night last week, Ian's Pizza in Madison, Wisconsin, received an order from some hungry protesters at the state capitol – where the Republican government is attempting to pass a bill that, among a range of harsh budget cuts, proposes to remove the collective bargaining rights of about 300,000 workers – asking if they had any leftovers. They did, and, even though it was 3.30am, obliged. The next day they took a couple of calls from people who had heard about their gesture and wanted to order more pizzas for the protesters, who number in the tens of thousands, and have been demonstrating for nearly a week. A trickle, to coin a cliche, became a flood: by 5pm on Saturday, when they gave away 1,057 free slices at their restaurant and delivered more than 300 pizzas to the capitol, Ian's had to suspend normal business. On Sunday it all began again.Calls were coming in not just from the States (38 of the 50, at last count), but from all over the globe: Ian's Facebook page (of course) carries a picture of the chalkboard on which they are keeping track – Canada, Denmark, Finland, Australia, Germany, China, the UK, the Netherlands, Korea, Turkey – and Egypt. Take on Mubarak and win, apparently, and you can take on the world. • 2010: probably the hottest year ever recorded
Temperature records tumbled in Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Burma and Pakistan, causing heatwaves and devastated harvests2010 was the year of the heatwave, with record temperatures set in 17 countries. Two leading groups of scientists say it was the warmest since records began in 1850; another suggests it was the second-warmest.But the year that saw an unprecedented month-long heatwave in Russia will be followed by cooler global temperatures in 2011, say climate scientists monitoring sea temperatures in the Pacific that are thought to determine temperatures around the world. The final ranking of 2010 will not become clear until November and December data are available in early 2011, but November global temperatures are similar to those observed in November 2005, suggesting 2010 is on track for near-record levels. This decade also proved to be the hottest on record, with temperatures averaging 0.46C above the 1961-90 average, 0.03C above the 2000-09 mean and the highest value yet recorded for a 10-year period. The Russian heatwave, which saw temperatures in Moscow nearly 15C above normal for a month, led to thousands of deaths as well as forest fires across a wide region. But the heatwave extended across the Middle East, and northern India, devastating harvests and leading to food shortages.Previous temperature records tumbled in 17 countries including Russia, Ukraine, Finland, Chad, Kuwait, Burma, Sudan, Niger and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan had Asia's hottest-ever recorded day when the temperature in the abandoned city of Mohenjo-daro in Sindh province reached 53.5C.The most extreme temperature anomalies in 2010 occurred across most of Canada and Greenland, where annual temperatures were 3C or more above normal, and across much of Africa and south Asia, where annual temperatur

    • Podcast: Latin America at the checkpoint
In a week of escalating violence near Mexico's border with Texas, we call on two experts to explain what is going on and why. The journalist Ed Vulliamy travelled the length of the 2,000-mile border while researching his book Amexica. He reports on the violence he found there, and also the warmth and courage of ordinary people trapped in an increasingly bloody war.Colombian historian Oscar Guardiola-Rivera points out that Latinos will be the majority in the US by the middle of this century, and suggests some of the ways in which Latin America could offer a lead to the developed world as it struggles to come to terms with social, economic and environmental meltdown.Plus we go to New York to interview the fourth of the authors shortlisted for this year's Guardian first book award, Maile Chapman. We ask why, with so much going on in the here and now, she should have have chosen to set her debut novel in Finland in the 1920s.Prize drawWe also have two signed copies to give away of Patti Smith's memoir Just Kids, which this week won the US's prestigious National Book Award for non-fiction. • Is a federal Nordic state on the cards? | Eirikur Bergmann
The Nordic nations together would have economic and political clout – if they could overcome their fierce independent spiritsToday the leaders of the five Nordic states are meeting to discuss the possibility of creating a Nordic federal state. Ever since the Kalmar Union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden – reaching to Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland and Orkney – collapsed in 1523, the idea of reinstating some sort of a supra-national Nordic state regularly crops up. Now this old idea has resurfaced in a book the Swedish history professor Gunnar Wetterberg submitted to the Nordic Council in Reykjavik today.Wetterberg argues that together the Nordics (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with the three micro territories the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Aland), will be stronger and more stable and prosperous than they are on their own. After Sweden and Finland joined Denmark in the European Union in 1995, leaving Norway and Iceland in the European Free Trade Association (Efta) (and within the European Economic Area, which brings them in to the European internal market), the Nordic Council has been in search of renewed purpose. Over the last 15 years the cracks have become ever more obvious in Nordic co-operation: it has been downgraded to cover soft policy issues such as culture, while economics and other hard policy has been transferred to the European level. With a joint government and a parliament based on a common constitution, the federal Nordic state should concentrate on foreign policy and defence, the economy and the labour-market, and research, leaving most other policy areas to the regional authorities in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Reykjavik and Stockholm. Wetterberg compares his Nordic federation to the Swiss model and links
