- Finland recognizes South Sudan
Finland on Friday recognized South Sudan as a sovereign state.
Finnish President Tarja Halonen decided to grant Finnish recognition of the world's newest independent state, Finnish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
President Halonen also approved at the same time the establishment of diplomatic relations between Finland and South Sudan, the statement said.
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on July 9 following a referendum on secession in January.

Flags were at half-mast across Finland on Sunday in mourning for the victims of the twin attacks in Norway that have claimed 93 lives.
Some Finnish people spontaneously came to the Norwegian embassy in downtown Helsinki. They lighted up candles and presented flowers to mourn the victims.
The Social Democratic Youth of Finland held a memorial in the front of the Norwegian embassy in the evening. Its members observed silence in respect for the deceased.
