- Afghanistan has poetry in its soul | Reza Mohammadi
A Taliban poetry book may have raised eybrows but Aghans' lives have been threaded together by verse throughout its historyWhen the Taliban's poetry book was published in the UK this month, many found it very strange indeed, but someone who understands the culture and lifestyle of Afghans knows how important poetry is to Afghans. On a visit to Jalalabad during the orange flower blossom celebration, I have felt the power of poetry within the people. As each word was recited by poets, people would rise up, cheer, and then sit down. This is how Afghans live and breathe poetry and drown in an illusion and dream. The Taliban are like other Afghans, humbled by poetry, and their connection to poetry is older than their connection to radical Islam, the Kalashnikov and grenades. The history of poetry in Afghanistan dates back millennia. It flourished during the reign of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, who ruled from 998 to 1030, and was a man of literature and poetry, with more than 700 poets living in his palace. But 100 years before the Sultan of Ghazni, Persian literature was born in the court of the first Persian king, Yaqub, in Nimruz, a western province of Afghanistan. It is said that one day a poem was recited in Arabic to praise him, but as Yaqub didn't understand Arabic he ordered that no poem should be recited in a language he did not know. So the literary men of the court were forced to compose poems in Farsi, the language of the king. And the rest is history.Poetry is everything to Afghans, we hear and recite poetry from cradle to grave. Regardless of our ethnicity, whether we are Tajik, Hazara, Pashtun, Uzbek, Turkmen, Nuristani, Baluch, or any other of the hundreds of sub-ethnic groups, Afghans are threaded together by poetry.Babies are rocked to sleep with spontaneous poet null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Three Attributes Of Enormously Successful Companies
Customer service is an important concept being touted by all types of companies. In many company mission statements, you will probably find a statement or inference that the organization seeks to make consumers? lifestyle better through the use of its products and/or services. The basic problem of customer service is that many companies either don?t know how to offer customer service, forget to monitor the customer services its employees provide or identify the attributes that comprise customer service. Customer service is a complex, often vague attribute. Think about the number of retailers that ?promote customer service? yet you can?t get waited on, are unable to find a cash wrap or the merchandise is out of stock. I recently went to a fast food restaurant during lunch hour; the service was not fast even though the restaurant business was slow. Perhaps the manager was in training. Perhaps the employees didn't care. Regardless of the reason, the customer service was inferior. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

The boxer wants a seat in the Philippines congress, but great sportsmen tend to make mediocre statesmenManny beware. The man generally considered to be the greatest pound-for-pound boxer in the world is hoping to make the leap from pugilist to politician, with a run for the Philippines congress. But sportsmen generally don't make good statesmen. Yes, they have plenty of natural advantages: a large support base, widespread recognition, sometimes money, presence, and an undeniable will to win. But of the scores who have tried to reinvent themselves, you could count the genuine successes on the finger of one hand. Perhaps it's the subtleties, the policy nuances, the shifting allegiances that stump them. Perhaps it's that most are used to simple win-or-lose formula that rarely apply in politics.Or perhaps it's simply that the public prefers its heroes to be raising cups and trophies, not issues.Imran Khan, PakistanPakistan's foremost sporting hero through the 1970s and 1980s, Khan led his country to its only World Cup triumph in 1992. - Marrying for spiritual pride is divisive | Roz Kaveney
The history of trying to maintain marriage as the heterosexual gold standard of human relationships is one of crueltyThe question: What is marriage for?The question has always been less, what is marriage for than what do people use it for? And it is fairly clear from some of the discussion here that part of what people use it for is to convince themselves that they, and their relationships, are in some special and transcendent way better than other people's. There is a name for that, and it is spiritual pride, and just because I don't happen to believe in God any more, doesn't mean that I think it, not sinful perhaps, but deeply unhealthy and divisive. It's clear, for example, that for a lot of people marriage is a way in which the state and the church reward them for happening to be heterosexual. (Which, let us be clear, is no less a valid lifestyle choice because it happens at present to be a majority one.) To go further, as both Harriet Baber and Austen Ivereigh appear to, and argue that marriage should be monogamous, lifelong and with no time off for good behaviour, is already to ignore the reality of what actually happens in the society we live in. To argue, as Ivereigh explicitly does, that marriage should be restricted to heterosexual couples is implicitly to argue that it should be restricted to couples that know in advance, whether through deeply held religious conviction or some kind of existential leap in the dark, that they will never divorce or commit adultery, even in their hearts. This is horribly unforgiving to the ordinary messy muddle of human lives on the one hand and, on the other, assumes that lesbian and gay couples never feel that overarching sense of permanence to their relationships. There is a reason why society and many of the churches have chos
- Is Gen Y's Live-At-Home Lifestyle Killing The Housing Market?
The housing market, traditionally a harbinger of economy recovery, continues to falter and the reality of college grads boomeranging back to the nest is, in large part, to blame for the sluggish numbers. As The Washington Post reports, two-thirds of the excess vacant housing in the US is directly attributable to a drop in demand caused by the recession, with a delay in new household formation by twentysomethings being a significant contributor to the lack of property purchases. But if the housing industry is waiting for Millennials to get back on their financial feet and take their rightful place as America?s next generation of homeowners, they might be in for a surprise. - There is no age limit in the fight for health
This week the United Nations is bringing together world leaders to discuss the global health crisis of non-communicable diseases (NCDs): strokes, cancer, heart attacks, lung disease and dementia (Report, 17 September). These diseases are on the rise like never before: by 2030, the World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that the top four killers in the world will be NCDs. What is most striking is that their impact is felt most on those over the age of 60, yet the emphasis of the summit is clearly on younger people. According to the WHO's own statistics, 75% of deaths from NCDs globally occur in people aged 60 and over – an estimated 27 million people. Population ageing, as well as lifestyle factors, is inextricably linked to this global challenge. The rise of NCDs is not a problem isolated to wealthier countries. According to some estimates, the over-60 population in developing countries is increasing 3% per year (compared to 2% in developed countries) and will grow from 473 million people in 2009 to 1.6 billion in 2050.An ageing population brings a new set of critical health challenges. Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, for example, affect 12% of those over 65 and more than 30% of those over 85. Over the next two decades, the number of people aged 65 and older suffering from diabetes is expected to increase by 134%. And then there's cancer, which, according to one British study, is six times more likely to affect women aged 60 to 64 than women aged 35 to 38.To win the fight against NCDs, governments and stakeholders must come together to create solutions that are appropriate for people of all ages, with no age limits being set for good health.Richard Blewitt HelpAge International, Michelle Mitchell Age UK, Marc Wortman Alzheimer's Disease International, Mic _NULL_

- Tunisian court sentences Ben Ali to 20 years for inciting violence
Ousted dictator, already sentenced to decades in jail for other crimes, is unlikely to be extradited from Saudi ArabiaA Tunisian military court has sentenced the ousted dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali to 20 years in jail in his absence for inciting violence during a police attempt to smuggle his nephew out of the country during last year's revolt.Ben Ali, who fled to Saudi Arabia as protests engulfed Tunisia on 14 January 2011, has already been sentenced to decades in jail – also in his absence – on charges ranging from corruption to torture, and he faces more charges.Last month, a Tunisian military prosecutor demanded that the death penalty be imposed on the former strongman for his role in the deaths of protesters in the towns where the Arab spring began last year. There was, however, little indication that Riyadh would be willing to extradite Ben Ali.No senior officials have so far been convicted for the deaths of more than 300 people in last year's uprising, angering the families of the dead and raising pressure on the Tunisian government to ensure justice was done.Tunisia's government has faced persistent criticism over its failure to persuade Saudi Arabia to hand over Ben Ali and his wife, Leila Trabelsi, a former hairdresser whose lavish lifestyle and clique of wealthy relatives came to be seen by many Tunisians as a symbol of the corrupt era.TunisiaZine al-Abidine Ben AliArab and Middle East unrestMiddle East and North AfricaAfricaSaudi Arabiaguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Lifestyle magazines rarely have a section in them for swaps. Gadget marketing is also light on what to do with your device once you feel it's overstayed its welcome. - Could abolishing tax havens solve Africa's financing needs? | Charles Abugre
Increased financial transparency is critical to stem the illicit capital outflows that are crippling AfricaThe past month, the spotlight has been on James Ibori, the governor of Nigeria's Delta state from 1999 to 2007, who pleaded guilty at in a London court to 10 counts relating to conspiracy to launder funds from the state he governed.Ibori was accused of siphoning off an estimated $250m and laundering it in London through a number of offshore companies and financial intermediaries to fund his extravagant lifestyle of lavish mansions, expensive cars and private jets. This mode of illicit capital flight is by no means restricted to one rogue Nigerian governor or even African leaders at large, nor is it the most important means by which capital leaves the continent (and developing countries generally) illicitly.True, $250m from one source is substantial. But this pales into insignificance compared with the estimated $100bn that left Nigeria illicitly between 1970 and 2008, according to Global Financial Integrity (GFI). The bulk of this haemorrhage, contrary to popular belief, is not through the laundering of corrupt money but through commercial activities, and particularly through multinational corporations.According to GFI's conservative estimates, more than $1.8 trillion left African shores illicitly between 1970 and 2008. Of this, only 3% is attributable to bribery and theft by government officials, 30%-35% results from the laundering of criminally acquired wealth (drugs, illegal arms sales, human trafficking, etc), and the bulk – 65%-70% – is from commercial activities, especially through trade mis-pricing of goods.Over the last 10 years, the average annual outflows of this sort exceeded $50bn. This compares with annual aid inflows of less than $30bn. The outflows null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

- China executes driver for herder death
The herder was killed while blocking the road through his village during a protest against noise and pollution from coal trucksChina has executed a truck driver for killing an ethnic Mongolian herder in a case that sparked Inner Mongolia's largest demonstrations in 20 years. The official Xinhua news agency said in a brief report that Li Lindong had been executed on 18 August. The report, dated 19 August, was posted to a regional news website and appeared not to have been widely circulated. The herder, Mergen, who like many Mongols used just one name, was killed on 10 May while he and others were blocking the road through their village to protest against noise and pollution produced by coal trucks driving across the grasslands. Police said Li ran over Mergen and then dragged his body for 145 metres before he died. His death and that of another Mongol in a clash with Chinese coalminers sparked protests across the sprawling northern pastureland by herders and students demanding justice and greater protection for Mongol culture and the nomadic herding lifestyle.Li was sentenced in June after a six-hour trial at the intermediate people's court in the region's Xilingol League area. Fellow driver Lu Xiangdong, who had been sitting in the cab of Li's truck when he drove over the herder, was also convicted of homicide and sentenced to life in prison, state media said earlier. Two other people, Wu Xiaowei and Li Minggang, were convicted of obstructing justice and given three-year sentences for blocking police who arrived at the scene, allowing Li Lindong and Lu to escape.Mass migration to the Inner Mongolia region by members of China's majority Han ethnic group and a booming mining industry have placed traditional ways of life under severe pressure.China is the world's largest enforc 石炭trucksChinaから騒音や公害に対する抗議の間に彼の村を通過道路をブロックしながら、遊牧民は20 years.The新華社に内モンゴル最大のデモをきっかけ場合には、民族モンゴルの遊牧民を殺すためにトラックの運転手を実行している殺された李林洞は8月18日に実行されていたことの簡単な報告書で述べた

But it was also his death which proved just how strong his selling power was.His estate received a huge boost in the wake of his death and saw him generate £173m in the 12 months after he died. With a succession of timeless hits, sales of his material increased dramatically as fans rushed out to capture some of the magic which saw him labelled the King of Pop.Coupled with radio play royalties, the star earned more than Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna and Jay-Z combined during the year after his death in June 2009.While it is not uncommon for major stars to get a sales spike following their death, figures complied by Forbes magazine showed Jackson was the highest earning dead celebrity of 2010, beating the pooled income of the next 12 stars on the list, and four times greater than second-placed Elvis Presley. An increase in radio play and a massive boost in album sales is said to have brought in around £32m, while video games sales, memorabilia and a reissued autobiography also brought in a similar amount.Sales from the This Is It film, assembled from footage of rehearsals for the 02 Arena concerts for which he was preparing when he died, helped add to the millions. But Jackson's greatest money maker had always been his rights to other people's songs, which include his half-share in a catalogue of hits by artists such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles, which famously led to the end of his friendship with Sir Paul McCartney. With his lavish lifestyle, Jackson would rely null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - The inside track ... on siestas
Spanish-style naps in the afternoon bring many benefits, but a regular sleep routine is vitalSleep deprivation is a major problem. Over time, it will cause significant metabolic changes, such as an increase in appetite, and cravings for salt and sugar. How many of us reach for a cupcake, or a packet of crisps, when we're tired? So, the best reason to take a siesta is to ensure that you're getting enough sleep. It's especially useful to take a nap or short siesta before a high-pressure situation, such as travel or a major meeting. If you drink two coffees, and then sleep for 20 minutes – no longer, or you'll find yourself entering a deep sleep – and on waking the caffeine will just be kicking in, so you'll feel doubly alert.A lot of research has been done into the potential health benefits of Spanish-style siestas. In 2007, a study by Greek researchers appeared to offer evidence that regularly taking a nap in the afternoon protected you against death from heart disease, but it's very difficult to separate factors such as sleep from the other potentially beneficial aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle.People who regularly find themselves feeling sleepy in the afternoon, however, might need to look at how much sleep they're getting, and whether they have any underlying sleep problems. And regular sleep times are actually much more beneficial than siestas. When it comes to sleep, routine is good for us – we should all aim to get to bed at the same time each night, and get up at the same time each morning.• Mary Morrell is professor of sleep and respiratory physiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College LondonSleepHealth & wellbeingguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions 午後にはスペイン風の昼寝は、多くの利点をもたらす通常の睡眠のルーチンは、vitalSleep欠乏は大きな問題です

- How to Create a Lifestyle Company for Your Personal Brand
At a time when the US unemployment rate is 9.8%, professionals are struggling to get a job, keep their job, and advance in their job. Accenture recently reported that more than 50% of professionals around the world don't like their jobs. The reasons included: being underpaid, a lack of opportunity for growth, no opportunity for career advancement, and the feeling of being trapped. I recently spoke to Ryan Paugh, an online community expert, about the type of businesses that professionals should focus on to be happy and enjoy life. Together, we came up with the idea of a "lifestyle company." A lifestyle company is one that you either create or join based on passion, enthusiasm, and expertise. Based on your dream (but realistic) lifestyle, you're able to make the company part of your daily routines and it doesn't feel like work.

- Germany is kicking away props of global recovery | Phillip Inman
Germans must realise their desire for a rich lifestyle will destroy everything the European Union had painstakingly constructedThe Germans are getting out of hand. First, they play a key role in causing the financial crisis. Then, just as the world starts to claw its way back to some kind of normality, they start kicking the props away. This accusation is not about fighting the second world war again or inciting xenophobia, but a reality check on how those peace-loving, social-democratic Germans are selfishly jettisoning ailing European Union countries, starting with Greece, to maintain probably the richest, most all-embracing cradle-to-grave welfare state on the planet. The fault lies mainly with Germany's large baby-boomer middle class, which now share the same aspirations as the aristocrats of the past – namely, a long and prosperous and supremely idle retirement.Like a rogue elephant in search of food, German investors have stripped the bark from almost every tree in the savannah. To maintain an artificially high standard of living and that promised retirement, they seem intent on eating what remains. If we go back five years to the point where the US subprime housing boom was beginning to implode, German investors were begging for homes to buy. Not directly, that would be risky. They wanted derivatives of US home loans that could be valued, insured and traded. They had already bought billions of pounds worth of mortgage-backed securities and were on the look out for more. Deutsche Bank was one of the biggest players in the market.German investors love bonds. They are deemed safer than shares and offer a steady return. Except that, by 2005, a steady return was not enough. - Costly life-saving drugs: you have to draw the line somewhere | Ben Goldacre
The press reported Avastin's 'life-saving properties' with an anecdote about one person, totally ignoring the treatment's realityFor simpletons and amateurs, there are good research methods and bad research methods. In reality, different tools are valuable in different situations, and sometimes even very tiny numbers of people can give you a meaningful piece of information: even an anecdote can be informative. For example, if you produced a research paper about just two people who had gone into space, in a rocket or in a space shuttle, and then an extra eye had physically opened in the centre of their forehead, I would be concerned. That's because going into space is a very rare lifestyle risk exposure: maybe 1,000 people in total. And I've never seen a third eye physically open in the centre of someone's forehead. In this context, even though there are just two anecdotes, even though they are unsystematically gathered, it's still interesting information, because the exposure and the outcome are both very rare, and because this is the first information available on the issue. I would want to look into it more carefully, and more systematically, but these anecdotes are still useful evidence. That was a special case. This week the newspapers were filled with stories about The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence's (Nice's) recommendation not to fund Avastin, a bowel cancer drug that costs £21,000 a patient, in draft guidance. This drug has been studied in a large randomised trial of 1,401 patients receiving either chemotherapy with Avastin or chemotherapy with placebo. The trial isn't perfect – no trial is, you can read the details online – but it gives the best estimate of the true benefit of this drug, and overall, it shows Avastin extends survival from 19.9 マスコミは一人の逸話とアバスチンの。。u0026#39;救命プロパティが。。u0026#39;は、完全に治療のrealityForの単純さとアマチュアを無視して報告し、良い研究方法と悪いの研究方法があります
- Eyes Wide Open reveals the homophobia of Orthodox Judaism
The important yet depressing Eyes Wide Open is true to life: it shows a Hassidic community that preaches sexual intolerance and a terror of differenceEyes Wide Open may be sensitively filmed and movingly narrated, but it is also profoundly depressing. Set in a fundamentalist religious community in Jerusalem, it tells the story of two men who fall in love and embark on an illicit affair. Same-sex relationships within any conservative religious community are generally forbidden. Orthodox Judaism, for its part, teaches that men and women should marry young, have lots of babies and live as purely and God-fearingly as possible. This film follows on the heels of Sandi Simcha DuBowski's fascinating 2001 documentary Trembling Before G-d, which interviews lesbian and gay Orthodox Jews trying to come to terms with their sexuality. The fascination for me was the subjects' allegiance to their religion rather than their sexuality. Why do they stay wedded to a set of beliefs that interprets their lifestyles as an abomination? What pull does fundamentalist religion have for these people, who, unlike many others, could walk away into the arms of another community? My partner Harriet's brother, Daniel, is a Hassidic Jew living just outside Jerusalem. Two years ago, Harriet and I – out and proud lesbians – attended the arranged marriage of Daniel's 17-year-old daughter. As I stood talking to Harriet's parents, the father of the groom approached me, thinking I was Harriet. I braced myself. When Harriet's father introduced me as his daughter-in-law, the father of the groom blanched and turned away, not out of rudeness or open hostility, but because of his inability to cope with the knowledge of my lesbianism. The odd thing about the wedding was the sex segregation. - Fidel Castro's Potbelly amigo Max Marambio finds brother Raul Castro is not so friendly
Max Marambio had it all from the Cuba leader Fidel Castro. Now Raul Castro wants him on corruption chargesA globe-trotting guerrilla befriends a dictator, goes into business and makes a fortune but ends up accused of corruption and betrayal. How the story ends remains unclear, but Max Marambio's rise and apparent fall could already fill several novels – and shed light on Castro rule in Cuba.It begins in 1973. Marambio, pictured, a Chilean leftist and bodyguard for president Salvador Allende, flees to Havana after Augusto Pinochet overthrows his boss. Fidel Castro promotes the exile through the ranks of Cuba's special force guerrillas. Over time, Marambio swaps a Kalashnikov for a pen and sets up a company, Rio Zaza, in partnership with Cuba's communist authorities. The food and beverage enterprise thrives and makes the Chilean rich. His waistline expands along with his bank balance, earning the nickname Potbelly. After Pinochet leaves power, Marambio returns to Chile with a lavish lifestyle including a helicopter and ranch outside his home town of Santiago. He maintains a close friendship with Fidel. But last week it all went wrong. After months of investigation into Rio Zaza, Cuban authorities accused Marambio of bribery, fraud, embezzlement and falsifying documents. They demanded he appear before investigators by 29 July or face an international arrest warrant. Through his lawyer, Marambio protested innocence and said he would fly to Havana. In a regime as hermetic as Havana's, analysts were left guessing. Corruption rumours swirl round many companies in Cuba so why pick on Marambio's? And why now?One theory is that since succeeding his brother, Raúl Castro has emboldened auditors to go after big fish, regardless of links to the government. - Keep our war veterans out of prison | David Ramsbotham
That so many ex-servicemen end up in prison is shocking. We owe our veterans help returning to civilian lifeToday a conference will be held by Veterans in Prison, of which I am president, to examine a problem that was drawn to the attention of the public last year by the National Association of Probation Officers, which published the surprising and shocking figures that some 20,000 ex-members of the armed forces were in the hands of the criminal justice system, more than 10,000 of them in prison. The ministries of defence and justice responded by denying that figure, suggesting that the figure was nearer 5,000 and admitting that, while exact records were not available, the total included a number who had served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan and were suffering from various mental problems including post-traumatic stress disorder.Whatever the actual numbers turn out to be, the exposure of the situation demands a national response in line with the much-vaunted military covenant. The nation is reminded of the debt that it owes to the men and women who serve in its armed forces, most obviously when images of hearses containing union flag-draped coffins passing through Wooton Bassett appear on our TV screens. The military covenant is the term used to describe that debt, which should include help given to enable servicemen and women to return to civilian life at the end of their service. However, this highlights the Greek tragedy of this process for many of them, who joined the armed forces to get away from the chaotic and dysfunctional lifestyle which had been theirs at home. The armed forces, as institutions, are often accused of overprotecting service people from the realities of life, meaning that the shock of exit is something that many cannot absorb. - A date with death | Open thread
Scientists are getting closer to predicting the date – and cause – of our deaths. But would you want to know?It may sound like the stuff of horror movies and spooky fortune tellers, but predicting the date of someone's death seems to be drawing ever closer to becoming scientific reality.Last week, US scientists developed a genetic test that would help to predict a person's chances of reaching the age of 100. And now, researchers at King's College London have discovered that a simple blood test could be developed to predict Alzheimer's disease up to 10 years before symptoms develop. They suggested that high levels of a protein called clusterin in the blood could be an early sign of the condition, allowing patients to have early treatment and make lifestyle changes to minimise the impact of the disease. But, as ever more sophisticated tests are developed, we ask: would you really want to know how long you will live, or when you may suffer the onset of dementia? Do you think it would help you to make informed decisions about how you live your life, or would the sense of doom hanging over you be too much to bear? Tell us which conditions you would want to be warned about in advance.Medical researchAlzheimer'sUnited Statesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- The Catholic church should free its priests from celibacy | Editorial
Pope Benedict XVI needs to break with tradition and allow priests to marrySpare a thought for the typical Catholic priest. His image has been blackened by successive child abuse scandals, first in Ireland and America, now in Germany, Holland and Italy. His vocation is vanishing – only seven men were ordained in England and Wales last year – and as a result, his work-load has multiplied. With several parishes to tend, his isolation grows. Hardly the kind of vibrant and healthy culture to inspire men with the strength to deal with society's ills.Clearly this is unsustainable. The church needs to grapple with the issue at the heart of its scandals: sex. Rome must review its position on celibacy and an all-male priesthood. When a priest is locked into a solitary lifestyle as part of his contract with his church, rather than with his God, resentment will surely follow. In a lonely and sometimes hostile environment, that resentment will fester. It is now an open secret that many priests have live-in lovers, with parishioners sympathetically keeping quiet. Priests involved in homosexual relations have been more covert, but anonymous polls have repeatedly showed that homosexuality is common among the clergy. These shadow-lives need to be allowed into the open. There is now hope that they will. The arch-traditionalist cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna is calling for an urgent examination of the celibate priesthood.
