In May of 2009, Markus Persson, better known as Notch, released the alpha version of a game called Minecraft. It operated on a unique model - players could buy discounted versions of the game while it was still in development, and the money used to purchase the game in turn funded more development. As time went on, Notch added more and more features, enabling the players to build, mine, explore, and fight zombies. In December of 2010, Minecraft officially entered its beta development phase, and it will be officially released as a full game this November at MineCon - a Minecraft convention to be held in Las Vegas. 2009年の月では、よりよいノッチとして知られているマルクスペルソンは、、Minecraftと呼ばれるゲームのアルファ版をリリースしました

    • Ahmed Wali Karzai obituary
Murdered half-brother of Afghan presidentThe death of Ahmed Wali Karzai, who was killed by a close associate this week, epitomised the chaos, uncertainty and betrayal that have characterised much of the post-2001 western intervention in Afghanistan. The course of his life, both as a refugee after the invasion of his homeland by Soviet forces in 1979 and after returning at the fall of the Taliban regime, reflected the troubles afflicting Afghanistan in recent decades. The half-brother of the president, Hamid Karzai, Ahmed Wali was shot three times in his residence-cum-office in the southern city of Kandahar by a trusted commander, who had worked for his victim for many years as a bodyguard.Ahmed Wali Karzai was born in the small southern Afghan town of Karz, son of a senior leader of the Popalzai tribe and well-known politician who was later killed in exile by the Taliban. He had six brothers and a sister. Little is known about his childhood, but the 1960s and early 1970s are now seen as a golden time of relative stability in the country. In his late teens, however, Karzai was forced to leave Afghanistan. His father opposed the Marxist regime in power in Kabul since 1978, and fierce fighting had broken out, pitting rebels against government and then Soviet forces, which arrived in 1979 in the part of the country where the family lived. These southern and eastern provinces were to suffer massive damage during the subsequent decade-long Soviet occupation and the civil war that followed.Karzai found his way to the US and worked in an Afghan restaurant in Chicago. He travelled to Pakistan regularly and was in Quetta, the southern Pakistani city, when his brother, Hamid, headed into Afghanistan as the Taliban regime crumbled. • Arthur Marx obituary
Novelist, screenwriter and biographer whose subjects included his father, GrouchoArthur Marx, who has died aged 89, grew up in the shadow of his father, Groucho, and was steeped in the controlled chaos of the Marx Brothers. Torn between trying to distance himself from a demanding father, yet also prove worthy of his genius, he enjoyed a long career as a writer of screen and stage comedies, novels and biographies. Not surprisingly, however, his most successful work capitalised on the public's interest in his father and his uncles, Chico, Harpo, Gummo and Zeppo.Marx wrote several works about Groucho, the first of which, Life With Groucho (1954), published at the height of his father's television popularity, was a warts-and-all portrait punctuated by Groucho's own annotations. When excerpts appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Groucho threatened to sue. Marx sent his father a dummy set of altered proofs and published the book as it was originally written. In 1970, Marx and Robert Fisher wrote the musical Minnie's Boys, which opened on Broadway with Shelley Winters in the titular role as his grandmother, who started her sons in vaudeville. Marx published a second memoir, Son of Groucho, in 1972. After his father's death in 1977, he and Fisher wrote a TV biopic, Groucho (1982), starring Gabe Kaplan, and a play, Groucho: A Life in Revue (1986), which became a hit off-Broadway and was nominated for three Olivier awards in London, including best comedy performance of the year (for Frank Ferrante, in the lead role). The play became a TV movie in 2001. Marx also wrote the book My Life With Groucho: A Son's Eye View (1988) and trawled through the family albums in Arthur Marx's Groucho: A Photographic Journey (1998).Arthur Julius Marx was born in New York, the eldest of Groucho's 小説家、脚本は、伝記、その対象89歳で死去した父親を、GrouchoArthurマルクス、含まれて、そして、彼の父、グルーチョの影で育ち、マルクス兄弟の制御カオスに染まっていた

Though the ancient city of Carthage is today a suburb of Tunis (capital of Tunisia), in Greek and Roman times Carthage was seen as the capital of a much larger empire called ?Libya? (which signified all of known Africa). Energetic, eloquent, yet stoic Roman statesman Marcus Porcius Cato (a.k.a. Cato the Elder) reportedly ended all his speeches with a signature line, ?Carthago delenda est? (trans: ?Carthage must be destroyed?).  It became his motto. • Mary Rosser Hicks obituary
My wife, Mary Rosser Hicks, who has died of cancer aged 73, often found herself in the eye of a leftwing political storm. She began working for the Morning Star in 1976, taking charge of the fighting fund, which raised much-needed money from supporters. The following year she became chief executive of the newspaper, working with grassroots supporters as well as leading trade unionists and politicians in the UK and abroad.During the struggles for control, brought about by divisions within the Communist party, she played a key role alongside the editor, Tony Chater, in ensuring its continued existence. In 1988, just before the demise of the Communist party of Great Britain, Mary took part in the re-establishment of its successor, the Communist party of Britain. After 10 years, she was one of almost 50% of executive committee members of the Communist Party of Britain who were virtually forced out of office and membership during a time of sharp political differences. She faced crises with determination and courage, characteristics which had already found expression when, in the late 1960s, she took the radical step of leaving the Catholic church and joining the Communist party. This was a challenging move for Mary, who was born to a Catholic family. It represented a fundamental change in the direction of her life. Educated at a convent school in Bournemouth, where she had been born Mary Hanlon, she received a rigorous education which enabled her to develop the writing and rhetorical skills which enhanced her political activism. From 1965 Mary was a member and, for many years, chair of the Marx Memorial Library in Clerkenwell Green, central London. In this time, the building was restored, the collections developed and the finances stabilised. Mary took part in Marxist-Christia 73歳がんで死亡した妻は、メアリーロッサーヒックス、多くの場合、左翼政治的嵐の目で自分自身を発見した

Meg Clothier, author of The Girl King, a historical novel on the life of Georgia's legendary queen, Tamar, and Kira Cochrane, former women's editor at the Guardian, come into the studio to debate the place of heroines in fiction, and to ask why there are so few of them in contemporary novels. Cochrane has also just published a new collection of 40 years of feminist writing at the Guardian; she tells us about the inspiration behind it, the process of putting it together, and whether the women who feature can be considered heroines themselves. We also attend an event held to launch a new collection of letters from the Marxist theorist and feminist Rosa Luxemburg, and hear from Susie Orbach and David Edgar on why her work has been so personally inspirational for them.Reading listThe Girl King by Meg ClothierWomen of the Revolution: Forty Years of Feminism edited by Kira CochraneThe Letters of Rosa Luxemburg Moon Tiger by Penelope LivelyHome by Marilynne RobinsonTales of the City by Armistead MaupinRoom by Emma DonoghueA Far Cry from Kensington by Muriel SparkOdd Girl Out by Elizabeth Jane HowardSarah CrownKira CochraneMeg ClothierTim MabyClaire Armitstead 国際女性の日の週には、我々は文学のヒロインに目を向ける

    • Before the Revolution – review
The 22-year-old Bertolucci made an impressive debut in 1962 with The Grim Reaper, a Rashomon-style thriller about the murder of a prostitute scripted by his mentor, Pier Paolo Pasolini. But it was his second film, Before the Revolution (1964), now rereleased to accompany a well-deserved retrospective at London's BFI Southbank, that made his name. Semi-autobiographical, partly inspired by Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma, and set in 1962 in his native Parma, the film is deeply indebted to the French new wave and centres on Fabrizio, a 20-year-old introspective haut bourgeois student both attracted to and repelled by middle-class conformity and revolutionary Marxism. He has an incestuous affair with his attractive young aunt (a recurrent theme in Bertolucci's work), and it is altogether a dazzling film, both continually vital and something of a time capsule. I think, however, that his best movies are The Conformist, The Spider's Stratagem, the first part of 1900, and, with reservations, his version of one of my favourite novels, Paul Bowles's The Sheltering Sky.Bernardo BertolucciDramaRomanceWorld cinemaItalyPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds 22歳Bertolucciは死神、彼の指導者、ピエルパオロパゾリーニスクリプト売春婦の殺人事件の『羅生門』スタイルのスリラーで、1962年に印象的なデビューを果たした

    • Marjane Satrapi | Top 100 women
Graphic novelist behind Persepolis, an autobiographical account of an Iranian youthWith her deceptively simple line drawings and witty, sparse writing, Marjane Satrapi, 41, has set new standards in graphic novels. But her autobiographical series, Persepolis (which has sold more than a million copies), and the Oscar-nominated film based on them, disseminated a more nuanced view of Iran. The daughter of wealthy westernised Marxists, Satrapi lived through the bombing of Tehran during the Iran/Iraq war, before being sent to school in Austria aged 14. Always the rebel, she was expelled and was homeless and selling drugs before she returned to Iran at 19. Her criticism of the theocratic regime led to her exile at the age of 24. In 2009 Satrapi took part in demonstrations in Paris in support of Iran's Green Movement – the protests against the supposed rigging of the elections that saw Mahmoud Ahmedinejad returned to power.Marjane SatrapiWomenIranHoma Khaleeliguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds ペルセポリスの背後にあるグラフィック小説家は、イランのyouthWith彼女の一見単純な線画や機知に富んだ、。執筆、マルジャンサトラピ、41の自伝的なアカウント、グラフィックノベルの新しい基準を設定している

    • Paul Olive obituary
My husband, Paul Olive, who has died suddenly aged 67, was a quiet visionary. Born into a Jewish Communist family in Chelmsford, Essex, he grew up with the dream of a fairer world, where each individual could lead a fulfilled life. The dream evolved, and he worked tirelessly to turn it into reality. On leaving the King Edward VII grammar school in Chelmsford, Paul read philosophy at Edinburgh University. He devoted time and energy to political causes, including the anti-apartheid movement and a local community newspaper. Throughout the 1970s, Paul worked full-time for the Communist party, editing its fortnightly magazine, Comment. He also contributed to Marxism Today.Paul was a key figure in the Eurocommunist faction, arguing for a more open and democratic strategy. His scholarly demeanour, deep and resonant voice, and his gentle, courteous manners lent him the air of an Oxbridge don rather than a communist revolutionary. From Comment, he moved to the party's daily paper, the Morning Star, and later edited the journal of the local government union Nalgo. In 1988 Paul joined the Guardian, where he became chief sub-editor on the foreign desk. His colleagues remember his gentle insistence on the highest possible standards and his infinite patience.Paul and I met in 1977 through our local Communist party branch and married 25 years and two children later, in 2002. Paul retired in 2008 to devote himself mainly to music, playing the trombone in a local orchestra. Still in pursuit of his dream and mindful of the capacity of music to bring people together, he leafleted and knocked on doors in search of amateur musicians. The results were extraordinary: first our street and then our area developed its own band. • Ireland's Fine Gael and Labour set to enter coalition
Agreement reached after talks between the parties went on into the early hoursFine Gael and Labour are inching closer to an agreement on forming the next government in Dublin.Labour delegates are meeting in the city this afternoon to endorse a plan to enter into coalition with Enda Kenny's party. The special delegate conference is taking place at University College Dublin, while Fine Gael will hold a meeting of its members at the Shelbourne hotel.Talks between Kenny and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore went on to 1am on Sunday and afterwards both parties said they had concluded an agreement.Gilmore said he intends to recommend the package to the Labour delegate conference. He stressed that final drafting work on the proposed programme for government was continuing.Gilmore said how many ministers each party would have would be decided before Wednesday.Neither leader would say what timetable had been agreed to reduce the budget deficit to 3% of GDP, which was a key area of difference in the parties' approach to economic recovery during the election campaign.Fine Gael believes Ireland should adhere to the conditions set down by the International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank, which want to see Ireland drive down its national debt by 2014. During the election campaign, however, Labour said it would prefer a target of 2016 to give the economy more time to recover from the recession and the impact of severe cuts in public spending. If both parties back the agreement, Kenny will be elected taoiseach on Wednesday and Gilmore will become tánaiste (deputy prime minister). • Britain's illiberal attitude to the church has driven me away | Theo Hobson
The Anglican church's version of Christianity is full of charming but deadly imperial ghosts. It needs an almighty exorcismI have moved to New York, for I don't know how long. I don't think I've emigrated, but for the first time in my life it's a possibility. I used to assume I was too patriotic to think of living elsewhere for long, but I have gradually found my patriotism wearing thin. Religion is at the heart of this.I have found the English way of religion to be dominated by nostalgia, class, and embarrassed evasion. It has no real interest in reforming itself; indeed it is deeply inoculated against reform. It would take an uber-Luther to get the necessary debate rolling.Nostalgia is the most obvious, and serious, charge. Christianity has taken many forms in its time, and it has been mixed with all sorts of other creeds, from Thor-worship to Marxism, but never has it been so deeply mixed with nostalgia. To be an Anglican is to subscribe to a version of Christianity that's full of charming but deadly imperial ghosts. It needs an almighty exorcism. The unholy ghost-in-chief is of course establishment, which is the pretence that we still live in the pre-liberal era, when nations had official established religions that unified them. Isn't this just a harmless link to our past? Yes and no: in secular political terms it doesn't seem to bother people, so maybe we should let sleeping unicorns lie. But it ought to bother Christians very much. For it sows enmity between Christianity and the modern liberal state. It idealises the theocratic monoculture we used to be. • A word from our partners ... focusing on financial inclusion
The Katine project has helped us identify innovative ways to provide disadvantaged, remote communities with access to financial services, says Barclays Group chairman, Marcus AgiusAs we approach the end of the third year of the Katine project, now is a good time to reflect on some notable achievements and on the contributions that have been made.Looking back, we have come a long way and, at the beginning, I do not think we could have predicted just what a difference we would be able to make to the lives of Katine's people. We have been able to address a major cause of poverty in a targeted and integrated manner, creating a lasting and sustainable legacy. More importantly, the people of Katine are now more empowered and able to take responsibility for aspects of their own lives, from health and education to water, sanitation and income generation. This involvement in local governance is an important step in creating a sustainable and harmonious community, and in stark contrast to the social issues facing many people in Uganda after years of conflict and war.Having been to Katine and experienced the project first hand, I have closely followed progress ever since, and seen the strides taken in generating income and wealth by giving people the ability to save their hard-earned money. The project is progressing well, with real social outputs being delivered.Estimates suggest that 2 billion people globally do not have access to basic financial services, making it harder, if not impossible, for them to save for the future or invest in their own businesses and communities. Things we take for granted, like bank accounts, loans and insurance, are simply not available to many people in poor and remote communities. The Barclays-led community finance component has been acknowledged Katineプロジェクトは、私たちは、金融サービスへのアクセスと不利な立場に、遠隔地のコミュニティを提供する革新的な方法を特定する助けており、バークレイズグループ会長は、マルクスAgiusAs我々はKatineプロジェクトの3年目の終わりに近づく、現在いくつかの反映しても良い時間だという特筆すべき成果とバックmade.Lookingされているの貢献、我々が先頭に、長い道のりを歩いているのは、私は、我々はKatineの人々の生活に作ることができるのと同じ何の違いと予測している可能性はないと思う

    • Hyman Frankel obituary
Hyman Frankel, my friend and comrade for 40 years, who has died aged 91, will probably be best remembered for Out of This World: An Examination of Modern Physics and Cosmology, published in 2003. In this book, Hyman applied the philosophy and methodology of dialectical materialism, derived from Marx, to explore crises in physics, the economy and society as a whole. Although it was intended to be read by professional physicists, cosmologists and philosophers, Hyman made the book accessible to general readers.By the time I met him, Hyman had already had an amazingly diverse career. In the early 1940s, he was a research technician in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, where pioneering work on nuclear physics was undertaken. When the rest of the team migrated to the US, Hyman decided to stay in the UK and went to work as a coalminer in the South Yorkshire Coalfield, until ill health forced him to quit.He then trained as a teacher of mathematics, took a degree in sociology from Birkbeck College and became a trade union official. In 1970, he published Capitalist Society and Modern Sociology, in which he challenged the orthodox sociology being taught in universities.Hyman was born into a Jewish community in the East End of London; his father was the beadle of a local synagogue. By the age of 18, he had rejected the Zionist ideology with which he had grown up. His experience of seeing Oswald Mosley's Blackshirt marches through east London prompted him to join the Young Communist league. He was a member of the Communist party of Great Britain until it was disbanded in 1991. After that, he joined the Alliance for Green Socialism. He chaired his local branch of the trade union Amicus, which became Unite, until two years ago. Hyman's mind remained active to the last. ハイフランケルは、私の友人との仲間40年、91歳で死亡した、おそらく最高のアウトオブディスワールドの記憶されるだろう:試験を現代物理学と宇宙論、2003年に出版された
