    • Venezuela: where old traditions still have a place
In an isolated cocoa region, descendants of the slaves who worked the plantations still beat the same drums as their ancestorsAnother weekend kicks off and the party's in full swing on the waterfront in Puerto Colombia on Venezuela's Caribbean coast. A crew of drummers belts out an infectious rhythm and the onlookers are in the mood for some serious partying. It's a weekend tradition in this fishing village for groups of drummers to congregate around the communal camaco drums beneath a statue of John the Baptist and beat out rhythms into the wee small hours. The drumming sessions are fuelled by copious amounts of rum and the moreish guarapita cocktail: passion fruit and sugar-cane alcohol. The camaco drums, which can be up to two metres long, are made from an avocado trunk, naturally hollowed out by termites. The normally sleepy village is transformed on Friday evenings as hordes of weekenders pour in from nearby towns and cities to play hard after a busy week. The journey to the coast is not for the faint-hearted – the road twists and turns through dense cloud forest and lush vegetation before descending to the spectacular Caribbean coastline.Back on the waterfront, the drumming ritual begins by burning scraps of paper in front of the skin to tune the drum. When the drum's in tune, one drummer starts playing it with his hands. Others sit astride the drum and tap out fast beats with sticks on its side.Onlookers take it in turns to lead the crowd in call-and-response chants while others start gyrating in a Venezuelan take on dirty dancing. The crowd eggs the dancers on, but any touching earns the transgressor a playful slap on the wrist. That these drumming traditions survive is testament to the area's isolation. • Clytie Gordon obituary
My mother, Clytie Gordon, who has died aged 74, was the epitome of a strong and no-nonsense, yet gentle and humorous West Indian woman. In 1955 Hurricane Janet swept through the eastern Caribbean, causing widespread destruction and leaving hundreds dead. Postwar Britain was encouraging its colonial subjects to make the journey to the motherland, and in Grenada, my grandfather Cuthbert Francis, a police inspector, decided to buy his 19-year-old daughter, Clytie, a ticket on the SS Lucania. On her arrival, Clytie lived in Catford, south-east London, eventually moving to Paddington and Ladbroke Grove in the west of the city. There she met, and in 1961 married, Winston Gordon. They were one of the first West Indian families to live in Kensal Green. My mother found work at a Lyons tea shop, for British Rail and at St Mary's (Harrow Road), Hammersmith and Kingsbury hospitals, along with various nursing homes, mainly working through the night to accommodate her young family. She also studied so that she could progress in the workplace. In the late 1970s, Clytie rediscovered her Christian faith, and she and Winston became involved in the early stages of the creation of the Peckham branch of the Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church. She loved fundraising for the church and was good at it. She also raised money for the Anglican church in St George's, Grenada, after Hurricane Ivan in 2004; provided a prayer breakfast for the local refugee community; and donated funds to a women's health centre in India. She was the prayer leader for the Revival Church and in her latter years taught at the Sunday school there. She was tireless in her service and commitment.Clytie was born in St David's, Grenada, the fifth of eight children of Cuthbert and his wife, Catherine.

    • Put race equality in mental health back on the agenda | Patrick Vernon
Key issues are being overlooked in the new mental health strategy, says Patrick Vernon of the Afiya TrustRacism in mental health institutions and wider society no longer appears to be an issue if the coalition government is to be believed. The impression given is that we are moving to a post-racial big society where 'state multiculturalism' is expunged from British values and public consciousness. This move is reflected in 'No health without mental health', the new cross-governmental mental health strategy. This builds on some of the aspirations of its predecessor New Horizons developed by New Labour in its last 12 months in power. At face value we recognise the new strategy's important focus on children and young people, anti-discrimination campaigns and the ongoing commitment to psychological therapies. However, the new strategy fails to address key issues around race and mental health, typified by the absence of any black and minority ethnic (BME) and service user-led organisations in its 'A call to action' document. In the strategy, the government talks about parity of esteem in recognition that mental health services should be on the same level as other major conditions such as cancer and stroke. But what we are left with is a disparity of esteem for BME communities. The overwhelming evidence, detention rates of up to 63.6% and higher than average rates of supervised community treatment orders, is clear. Yet no attempt at dialogue is being made to take forward the knowledge and experience of BME service users, practitioners and organisations on the need to develop culturally sensitive services.BME communities, particularly African, Caribbean and Muslim people, are still perceived either as a menace to society or victims of their own misfortune in terms of culture, fait

    • Caribbean banana industry decline is no sideshow | Aurelie Walker
Europe's trade policy has sold the Caribbean banana industry down the river, exacerbating drug trafficking and povertyToday, EU leaders and their counterparts from Colombia and Peru will strike lucrative trade agreements spanning financial services, industry and agriculture – the first between the EU and any Latin American nation since 2003. The EU's attention will then focus on securing similar deals with the mighty Latin American Mercosur bloc that includes Brazil and Argentina.Another example of the power of globalisation to generate wealth? Maybe, but there is a less rosy side to the seemingly inevitable victory march of trade liberalisation. As European business interests ready themselves for new markets, it should not be forgotten that breakthrough would never have materialised without selling the Caribbean banana industry down the river. Unlikely as it may seem, until last December, there was an impasse in closer trade ties between Europe and Latin America. It came in the form of the banana – the world's most exported fruit.Since 1975, Europe protected Caribbean banana growers. But the largely American interests that controlled the vast banana plantations in Ecuador and Colombia, where workers' rights are at best an afterthought, persuaded the then fledgling Clinton administration, whose election they lavishly funded, to lodge a complaint with the World Trade Organisation demanding they overturn this perceived unjust support. For 17 years, the banana wars raged. Then, five months ago, with one eye on huge trade deals between Colombia and Peru, Europe relented.Compensation for banana farmers in a dozen Caribbean and African countries comes in the form of €190m fund. The money will be paid to Caribbean governments in the form of budget support. • Letters: Last call for Labour leader support
My friends at Operation Black Vote and previously the Labour party black sections have worked their butts off to help increase the number of African Caribbean and Asian members of parliament. As a result the figure has risen from 15 at the last election to 27 in May. After Diane Abbott announced that – in the interest of racial and gender diversity – she would stand in the all-male, pale and stale leadership contest, I expected most of our MPs to back her (Editorial, 8 June). That was what black Congress people in the US did when Barack Obama threw his hat into the ring. But no. Diane has been able to muster just three nominations from her sisters and brothers; those of black sections stalwart Keith Vaz, David Lammy, a neighbouring MP, and just one of the newcomers, Chinyelu Onwurah. Diane's four other nominations come from white MPs. Acting leader Harriet Harman said she would stay neutral in the vote, but bravely urged her comrades in parliament to follow her example and nominate Diane to ensure there is at least one woman candidate. Hot favourites, the Miliband brothers have already passed the 33 nominations threshold. Of the black MPs, David Miliband has garnered the support of former minister Virendra Sharma, and newbies Anas Sarwar, Valerie Vaz and Yasmin Qureshi. And his mildly more leftwing brother Ed has won over Chuka Umunna, Lisa Nandy and Sadiq Khan. Ed Balls is backed by Marsha Singh and Khalid Mahmood.Three black MPs remain undecided: Mark Hendrick, Rushanara Ali and Shabana Mahmood. I hope, if only in the name of sisterly solidarity, that Rushanara and Shabana side with Diane, as nominations end today. The black MPs have got to learn how to play big people's politics. • We mustn't abandon the Windward Islands' farmers | Renwick Rose and Nick Mathiason
Hurricanes, drought and disease have devastated the eastern Caribbean banana industry, and Europe should support the region's farmers through this difficult timeThe destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas in the Caribbean in recent weeks is heartbreaking. But although the destruction in Haiti received media coverage, Tomas's intensity was reserved for the eastern Caribbean. A spiralling storm lingered over St Lucia. The deluge created terrible landslides, cutting off the south of the island. The damage is similar in St Vincent and Dominica. Now we are facing up to the total destruction of the Windward Islands' rural economy. Tomas has ripped up virtually every banana tree in St Lucia and St Vincent where the entire crop has been wiped out. Coconuts, cocoa and breadfruit are also all gone.Farmers who rely on bananas face an economic disaster, and a food emergency is looming. They will have no income for at least eight months, until the next harvest. That is if they can afford to replant trees.Parents are also agonising over whether they can afford to enter their children for the summer exams. Entry fees are due in January.Agriculture is the motor of the Windward Islands' rural economy. It accounts for 9.75% of GDP, according to the IMF. It is the largest form of employment in the countryside, away from the tourist areas. And earnings from bananas allow shops and small business to survive.Farmers are relying on the compassion of banks to allow them to keep their homes. They are likely to get deeper in debt.Tomas caps one of the worst ever years for Windward farmers. The financial crisis in the Caribbean is stark. The bank crisis has not just reduced tourist numbers, it has created a damaging economic downturn thanks to the over-reliance on the offshore finance industry. Forecasters say it could turn into a hurricane as it travels towards Haiti.US navy ship Iwo Jima was heading towards Haiti today to provide disaster relief. Aid groups are currently lacking emergency shelter, water and sanitation supplies, UN humanitarian co-ordinator Nigel Fisher said in a statement.Imogen Wall, a spokeswoman for the UN, said warehouses were being emptied of stocks of rope and tents to help people still living in camps. If Tomas reaches Haiti, it would be the first major storm to strike the country since the earthquake killed 300,000 people and forced millions from their homes. It would also be the first time extreme weather for Haiti since 2008, when the storms Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike battered the country in the space of a month, killing nearly 800 people.HaitiNatural disasters and extreme weatherNorth and Central AmericaUnited Nationsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Bobby Farrell obituary
Singer and dancer in the phenomenally successful Boney MAmong the perennial Christmas hits to be heard in supermarkets and elsewhere is the pop-disco version of the carol Mary's Boy Child by the 1970s vocal group Boney M. The phenomenally successful quartet was manufactured by the German record producer Frank Farian. Its male singer and dancer was Bobby Farrell, who has been found dead aged 61 in a hotel in St Petersburg the day after giving a performance of Boney M hits with his own group.Farrell was born in Aruba, in the Caribbean. As a teenager he became a sailor for two years before settling in northern Europe. After travelling in Norway and the Netherlands, he based himself in Germany, where he worked sporadically as a disc jockey and a dancer. In 1975, Farian concocted the song Baby Do You Wanna Bump? and decided to find a team of singers and dancers to perform it in clubs. Four young African-Caribbean performers resident in Germany – Farrell, Maizie Williams, Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett – became Boney M. The foursome had a constant stream of hits across Europe (including the Soviet bloc), Latin America and Asia between 1976 and 1982.Estimates of the group's record sales vary between 100m and 150m. In Britain alone, Boney M made the Top 10 singles chart 10 times, beginning in 1976 with Daddy Cool, followed by Sunny and Ma Baker (both 1977). The 1978 releases Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl in the Ring and Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord each sold almost 2m copies. There were also three No 1 albums, Nightflight to Venus (1978), Oceans of Fantasy (1979) and a hits collection issued in 1980. Only the US remained impervious to the group's catchy sound, despite Boney M's evident affinity with the then-fashionable disco scene. The three women in the group wore exotic, glitte Frank Farian

She was 13 at the time. The decision comes after 16-year-old Abby Sunderland had to be rescued in the Indian Ocean after a similar attempt last week, prompting widespread criticism of her parents for allowing her to undertake such a dangerous journey alone.Sunderland's voyage ended when waves snapped her mast, prompting a 20-hour international rescue operation. In Holland, Dekker has taken on an intense period of training to try to convince the authorities she is capable of completing the journey, her lawyer Peter de Lange told the court. She has passed a first aid diploma, become accustomed to lack of sleep and arranged to do schoolwork online. But the court in the southern Dutch city of Middelburg ruled that she should remain under state supervision for at least another month. Social workers had asked for a two-month extension of the order.Under the conditions of the ruling, Dekker has been allowed to live at home but her parents have had to consult child protection authorities about all major decisions.Dekker lives with her father, who is encouraging her record-breaking plans, while her mother has objected. The couple are separated.Last December, out of apparent frustration at the court order, Dekker fled alone to the Dutch Caribbean island of St Maarten. When she returned two days later, she was interviewed by the police.

    • Letters: Black politics
Afua Hirsch's article about black (African Caribbean and Asian) representation in parliament was welcome in what has been a very white election campaign (My election, 27 April). She estimated that the current crop of 15 black MPs could rise to a couple of dozen after 6 May. But forgotten was that the historical breakthrough of 1987, when four black MPs were elected after an absence of more than 50 years (communist/Labour Shapurji Saklatvala lost his Battersea seat in 1929), was achieved as a result of the Labour party black sections struggle. In 1988, our members Diane Abbott, Bernie Grant and Keith Vaz combined forces with Lord Pitt to form the parliamentary black caucus, styled on the US organisation to which Barack Obama was later to belong.Paul Boateng MP refused to join, helping to trigger its eventual demise. Without a caucus, black MPs are just a bunch of careerist individuals. The statements of black MPs on race issues have been invisible. And on the illegal Iraq war and draconian terrorism laws – with the exception of Abbott – their voting records have badly let down Muslims and black people in general. They should not be surprised if some of them are punished at the ballot box. After the election I hope the new intake will form, once more, a collective voice able to articulate the concerns and aspirations of black communities. They will remain irrelevant to black people's politics if they do not.Marc WadsworthChair, Labour party black sections (1986-88)Race issuesEqualityGeneral election 2010Diane AbbottKeith Vazguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

R&B star reportedly received $2m to play at a private gig for Libyan leader's son on the Caribbean island of St BarthsBeyoncé Knowles gave at a private concert on New Year's Eve for the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, according to reports, performing five songs at a club on the Caribbean island of St Barts. The R&B star's performance reportedly followed a similar gig at the end of 2008, when her husband Jay-Z appeared with Mariah Carey at the same nightclub, Nikki Beach. While the 2008 concert was thrown by 37-year-old Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, this year's event seems to have been hosted by Saif's brother, known as Hannibal. The New York Post reports that Carey was paid $1m (£625,000) for her song and dance – $2m is rumoured for Beyonc。's hour-long warble. Usher also took the stage, with Jon Bon Jovi, Lindsay Lohan, Russell Simmons and models Miranda Kerr and Victoria Silvstedt in the crowd.Tickets didn't come cheap. According to Portuguese columnist Vivi Mascaro, the 300 attendees paid $12,000 (£7,500) per table – with more for the endless magnums of champagne. It's not clear whether proceeds from this went to Beyoncé and the other performers – or whether the Gaddafis paid out of pocket. Still, if this YouTube video shot on a mobile phone is anything to go by, the audience got a thrilling show (and Beyoncé could use a pair of trousers).Hannibal Gaddafi does not exactly have a sterling reputation. His father aside, Hannibal has been involved in several reported assaults, including alleged attacks on Italian police officers, Swiss hotel workers, and his own wife, Aline Skaf, though no charges were made.Beyonc。Urban musicPop and rockMuammar GaddafiSean Michaelsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Condi R&BシンガーによるセントBarthsBeyoncéノウルズはカリブ海の島にリビアの指導者の息子のために、民間のギグでプレーするため200万ドルを受け取ったリビアの最高指導者カダフィ大佐の息子のために大晦日のプライベートコンサートで、報告書によると、少なくとも5曲を演奏したセントBarts.

    • The Caribbean Fault | Peter Thompson
We cannot resist the temptation to find meaning in sudden catastrophes, but that does not mean it is there to be foundThe question: Whose fault is Haiti's devastation?Of course the only rational answer to this is the Caribbean Fault. Earthquakes happen because of shifting tectonic plates and there are many of them every year. Occasionally one happens near a centre of population and many die. If one happens near a centre of dense population in which poverty reigns and poor building standards apply then there are even more deaths. Haiti is just such a case. But of course this isn't the end of the question. It probably should be but it usually isn't. From the medieval lunacy (though that is probably unfair to medieval lunatics) of a Pat Robertson blaming the victims for having turned their backs on God and practised voodoo, to the liberal Anglican uncertainty of a John Sentamu about how to explain it all, there is a widespread feeling that there must be something more to be deduced from the bare facts of the event. For example the word tragedy is often (mis-)used in this context. We say it is a tragedy that so many people died even though we know that almost 16,000 children die every day in the world of hunger and that in Haiti before the earthquake living conditions were about as low as you can go and mortality rates about as high. But that was a systemic fault rather than a tectonic one. Paradoxically, although something actually is systemically to blame, the reasons for the problem are so complex that we tend not to do so, or at least we argue about the relative culpability of history, capitalism, imperialism, slavery until the very underfed cows come home.In Haiti, though the contingent event of the earthquake was no one's fault, the level of devastation can be laid at

    • Windrush Day: a fitting way to celebrate our immigrant population
It is time we had a national holiday to acknowledge the contribution of black and Asian communities to British lifeIsn't it time we had a public holiday to celebrate the contributions of black, Asian and other minority communities to Britain over the last 60 years? The call for a Windrush Day emulates a long-running US campaign for a public holiday recognising diversity and cultural identity, with Martin Luther King, Jr Day finally becoming a reality in 1986.We should choose 22 June, the day when the MV Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury in 1948: a powerful and iconic symbol of the rise of modern-day multicultural Britain. The Windrush is not simply a symbol of the 492 Caribbean men and women who arrived on that ship – the first big group of postwar immigrants from the West Indies – but of everyone who came from the Empire; British subjects who saw Britain as their mother country. The seeds of modern migration were sown in these former colonies, from which 2.5 million men and women volunteered to fight fascism during the second world war. The fight for a tolerant, respectful society goes on – and a Windrush Day would be the best answer to the BNP and its sympathisers, who believe that multiculturalism has failed and that Britain should to return to how it looked in 1950.There's an urgency to this, too, since the Windrush generation is fast disappearing. Many of those born between 1910 and 1940 may not be around at the 70th anniversary Windrush celebrations in 2018. We can't afford to wait eight years to mark their achievement, and we will be poorer as a nation if we fail to document their history and contribution to Britain and beyond. So let's have a Windrush Day, in time for the Olympics in 2012: after all, they were won for London on the strength of our cu • Haiti: Disaster beyond magnitude
It is all too easy, seeing the appalling scenes from Port-au-Prince yesterday, to forget America's historic debt to Haiti, scene of the first successful slave revolt, which defined the destiny of Africans in the New World. The establishment of the first black independent state had tangible consequences. It denied Napoleon his foothold in the Caribbean and led him to sell New Orleans and the Louisiana territories to Jefferson. But, for as long as anyone can remember, Haiti has been treated as a basket case where corruption, gang violence and natural disaster combine to drag the country backwards. Now an earthquake may have killed up to 50,000, and rendered 3 million homeless. No one can prevent shallow earthquakes, but the consequences of this one have been made catastrophic by Haiti's condition. The French saddled the nation with debt, the Americans with cheap rice imports in the 1980s; 98% of the land has been deforested, destroying watersheds, creating soil erosion and impoverishing agriculture. Self-serving Haitian elites have just spent three months getting rid of Michèle Pierre-Louis, the first effective prime minister the country has had for years. The roots of the rural exodus and exponential growth of jerry-built shanty towns lie deep, but as the first arriving international aid teams looked round in desperation yesterday for the flickering signs of a functioning state, it was brutally clear why they were not going to find any. The policemen were too busy rescuing and burying their own families to patrol the streets. Even if the physical symbols of state, like the buildings of the presidency and parliament, had stood their ground, it is doubtful what help they could have given to their own people. The institutions they represent have never been far from collapse.

    • Letters: Haiti's inspiring past and cruel present
As a Haitian living in London, I have often felt concerned about the terrible economic plight of my country, but I have never been roused enough to try to actively help. But I have never felt more helpless than today. The destruction wrought by the severe earthquake on the capital Port-au-Prince was compounded by the poor urban planning and construction standards in the poorest country of the western hemisphere. I cannot imagine what the death toll will be. Yet for all its apparent misery and chaos, Haiti is an important country.Ours was the first nation after the US to gain its independence from European colonialism, in 1804, and it was the first sovereign black nation in a region still blighted with slavery. Haiti throughout the 19th century was a beacon for freedom fighters such as Simón Bol。var and José Marti. Haitians have a lively and rich culture and have consistently produced some of the best artists in the Caribbean: in music, with bands such as Tabou Combo, Michel Martely and Wyclef Jean; and in art, with internationally renowned painters and sculptors such as Edouard Duval, Philome Obin, and Prefete Duffaut. In these recessionary times, it will be difficult to fund the level of aid needed to alleviate the pain and suffering. This is a call for help. Please donate whatever you can to the victims of this latest calamity to hit our little country.
