    • Information is Beautiful on the Datablog: Left v Right redux | Visualised
What's the difference between the left and the right? David McCandless goes back to the futureWhat do the left and right actually stand for? I created this visualisation with London-based designer Stefanie Posavec in 2008 to try to better understand political perspectives. I had a vague sense, but no real detail. No sense of the cartography. So I roved through the Encyclopaedia Britannica, cross-referenced with Wikipedia, and delved through sites like conservative-resource.com to shape up and create a flowing 'concept-map' of these two blocs.See the imageOf course, the political spectrum is not quite so polarised. Actually it's more of a diamond shape, apparently. But this is how it's mostly presented in the media - left wing vs right wing, labour vs conservative, democrat vs republican. And perhaps in our minds too…Version 1.5The image appeared in my book Information Is Beautiful in Feb 2009 and was immediately set upon by right-wing bloggers. They drubbed it for its left-wing bias. Fair play, I thought. They made some good points. As a left-leaning journalistic type, I had clearly - and unconsciously - biased the diagram to make the Left seem better than than the Right. So I got into lengthy (and sometimes heated) discussion with my right wing critics. Taking in their feedback - and no small-amount of fireballs in the comments - I updated the image, refining the wording and changing a few other subtle elements for a hopefully more balanced end result. (If you're curious, you can see the original images on my Flickr)Remember though: this is an attempt to depict the idealised versions of the political spectrum. It's as if I'm stretching it tight, like a piece of rubber, so the details and forms are exaggerated. • Sisters | Theatre review
Crucible Studio, SheffieldUntil Alia Bano's Shades, Muslim women rarely featured in British drama. Now Stephanie Street, who starred in Bano's play, fulfils a long-cherished dream by creating a verbatim piece drawn from interviews with female Muslims. And, while the structure is a bit wonky, Street's fascinating play helps to chip away at the myth that there is such a thing as a monolithic Muslim culture.Street's format is to suggest that we are all guests at Sunday lunch at the Khan family home in Sheffield. We meet the locally born mother, married to a British Pakistani, and three of her five daughters, ranging from the secularised Samina to the hijab-wearing Salima. Through the family gathering we get a mix of opinions and are offered a variety of food from pakoras to jam sponges. This air of inclusiveness makes it all the more shocking when Samina secretly confesses that she was once nearly driven to knife her abusive father. But the enclosed family atmosphere also creates problems: in order to admit evidence from the wider world, Street resorts to the clumsy device of having a relative read from a leaflet about Muslim women that's dropped through the letterbox. In the end, the contrivance doesn't matter because the material is so rewarding. There are two confessional monologues of jaw-dropping candour: gay Farida describes how she was abducted by her family and forced into marriage before being allowed to settle down with a female partner, and transgendered Husna recounts the agonies of being misidentified as a man before undergoing a vital operation.Embracing religion and politics as well as sex, the show constantly reminds that there is no single Muslim female viewpoint. • The shame of Orlando Figes | Robert Service
Orlando Figes's secretive rubbishing of my work, and his subsequent legal threats, are disgracefulToday I awoke to find that my fellow academic Orlando Figes had admitted responsibility for anonymous negative reviews of my three most recent books posted on Amazon. It's been quite a fortnight. Last week I heard from Rachel Polonsky, whose book had also been negatively reviewed. The strong suspicion, strengthened by a survey of the Amazon data, was that Figes was the author. I sent out an email about this to leading Russian and European historians without specifically naming who I thought was the culprit. Figes loudly objected, claiming to want to mend relations. Then quietly came the letters threatening legal action, and the assertion that Figes's wife, Stephanie Palmer, had admitted responsibility. This is a matter that has broad implications for the public interest, as can be seen from the way I've spent my week. I got up last Sunday earlier than usual. Been doing that since the week before when Figes's lawyer started to correspond. Don't know why I thought I would sleep. My wife, Adele, and I went to an afternoon concert in Goring by the Thames where a piece by her composer grandfather, Claude Cover, was played. We could have done, however, without the traffic jam on the way back on the M4. It wasn't until we re-entered the People's Republic of Hackney that the mountain of emails had to be faced again.I wasn't sure whether I could stand the tension much longer, but at least we didn't seem to have to worry about holding on to our house and home. I had my book to write, a book about agents and commissars in the Russian revolution. Adele escaped to her yoga class on Tuesday – she's been brilliant while all this has been happening. • Twilight's feminist backlash | Bidisha
That a woman created Bella's man-worshipping, abuse-excusing pathology is baffling – luckily strong heroines abound elsewhereSo. Twilight Eclipse. Wolfboy Jacob lurks nudely, rudely, buffly, looking ever-ready for some lupine tussling out yonder. Vampire Edward appears to be struggling with constipation. And Bella, how goes it with her? Do you know, I can't remember. Who is she? Nobody. What does she do? Nothing. Where is she without men? Nowhere. Want to know what Bella's secret power is? It's the power of negation. She's such a deadzone of psychic antimatter that supernatural mojo doesn't work on her. Other characters' magical skills simply dissolve when they encounter the sullen ringfence of her anticharisma.Bella's passivity, the oppressiveness of her boyfriends (presented as protectiveness), the fetishisation of female victimhood and the unstinting justification of the guys' abusiveness have spurred a strong feminist backlash against the books – a backlash which I fully support. Part of our sense of disturbance and bafflement is that while all the misogynist elements of Twilight are detectable in mainstream arts and the media, they are rarely created by women. Why would a dynamic, creative, prolific and talented woman like Stephenie Meyer write a protagonist as useless as this? Why would she create bullying males and set them up as love objects? Do young women despise themselves so much that the very best they can fantasise about is trailing around after not one but two bullies? It's puzzling. I grew up obsessively reading adventure novels by Tamora Pierce, the Worst Witch series and all sorts of bronze breastplate Amazonian guff. The women in these books bristled with chagrin and energy, as did their lovers, allies, enemies and friends. How could publishing have ta 女性が作成ベラの男-崇拝、虐待-言い。病理は不可解です - 幸いにも強いヒロインはelsewhereSoを富む

    • Philip Pullman's Jesus, Dan Rhodes, and the latest from the Bologna book fair
In this week's podcast we look at Philip Pullman's latest book, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, a rewriting of the christian story provocatively published in the week of Easter. We have an exclusive extract from the audiobook, read by Pullman himself, and our panellists answer some of the questions every Pullman fan wants to ask: why did he decide to write the book? Just how blasphemous is it? How serious are the threats made by outraged believers? We also find out what the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, made of it in the pages of this week's Saturday Review. Also on this week's show, Lindesay Irvine talks to Dan Rhodes about his award-winning novel Little Hands Clapping, while Julia Eccleshare reports on the hottest titles at the Bologna children's book fair, and tips the books for parents to read with their children over the Easter break.Reading listThe Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ by Philip Pullman (Canongate)Little Hands Clapping by Dan Rhodes (Canongate)Children's booksThe Boy Who Climbed Into The Moon by David Almond, (Walker, 7+)How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell (Hodder, 7+)The Man from Pomegranate Street Caroline Lawrence (Orion, 8+)The Great Hamster Massacre by Katie Davies, illustrated by Hannah Shaw (Simon and Schuster, 8+)Sparks by Ally Kennen (Scholastic, 9+)VampiresTwilight by Stephanie Meyer (Atom)The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith (Hodder)Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead (Simon and Schuster)Claire ArmitsteadRiazat ButtLindesay IrvineJulia EccleshareScott Cawley 今週のポッドキャストでは、フィリッププルマンの最新作では、グッドマンイエスと眠れないキリストは、キリスト教の物語挑発的なイースターの週に公開されての書き換えております
