Tech Weekly podcast in Dublin Tech Weekly visits Dublin to check out the thriving local startup scene. The tech community has benefited from assistance through development agencies such as Enterprise Ireland that help to foster and fund new tech businesses. Ireland has also benefited from the presence of tech giants such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, HP, Dell and others in the country. But will all this success be put into jeopardy? Ireland has just accepted a €85bn bailout from the International Monetary Fund – will talented developers emigrate as their financial situations worsen? Will the tech giants that were attracted by favourable corporation tax rates leave the country if the government has to raise the rate? It would appear not however, and most entrepreneurs in the programme were upbeat about future prospects. Charles Arthur and Jemima Kiss tour the city, meeting up with Enterprise Ireland to hear how it helps fund and foster the country's new digital businesses. We also meet Joe Drumgoole of Cloudsplit, who tells us how punishing the cost of failure is in Ireland, and how startups shouldn't be worried – just learn from the mistakes.Dylan Collins of Jolt discusses Ireland's success as a hub for online gaming, and his role as a mentor for other startups, and Rob Martin of Infacta explains how Ireland's infrastructure such as broadband has been challenging for his business.Plus we get some interesting projects to pitch us their ideas at a listener meetup. You can find links to the startups and projects mentioned on the Guardian Technology in Ireland page.Don't forget to ...• Mail us at tech@guardian.co.uk• Get our Twitter feed for programme updates or follow our Twitter list• Like our Facebook page• See our pics on Flickr/Post your tech pics

In the wake of Taseer's murder, moderate Pakistanis must speak out We have to stand up against the fanatics determined to destroy our democratic nationSalmaan Taseer's murder is likely to have wider and more cataclysmic consequences than even the murder of his renowned leader, Benazir Bhutto, three years ago. Everyone mourned Bhutto – even her political enemies – because she was a woman, illustrious and a possible solution to what were, even then, seen as Pakistan's insurmountable problems.Taseer's death has unleashed the mad dogs of hell, inspiring the minority of fanatics to go to any lengths to destroy the democratic, secular and moderate Islamic Republic of Pakistan. We Pakistanis are at the edge of a precipice and as a consequence the stability of the entire region is at risk. The all-powerful army refuses to issue a single comment of support for the government or Taseer's family; the Pakistan People's Party government is paralysed and making concession after concession to the extremists and the political opposition; civil society has largely gone into hiding and anyone connected with defining Islamic principles (lawyers, judges, scholars, mullahs) refuses to stand up and be counted. The state of the nation is such that not a single registered mullah in the city of Lahore with its 13 million people was willing to read Taseer's funeral prayers, because they were too scared to do so.Five hundred lawyers have signed up to defend Taseer's killer Mumtaz Qadri, but Taseer's wife cannot find a single criminal lawyer to prosecute him. It is hard to see which judge is even likely to pursue the case to its obvious conclusion.Meanwhile Qadri is making YouTube videos from jail of himself singing Islamic hymns and over 70 pages on Facebook have appeared in his support (and thankfully been pulled down rapidly by Facebook Inc).Pakistan is pivotal t

Why do around 200 people accidentally drown every year?Besides the graphic above (which you can download as a PDF), we've summarised two of the datasets below: major causes of death and deaths from external causes - ie, accidents or assaults. If you want to find out how many people died after being bitten by bees or falling down stiars, this is the place to look. The NHS has visualised previous years' data already with its atlas of risk. And this data, although published last October, gathered virtually no coverage. US Army gives soldiers a few tips on social media The US Army issued soldiers a new handbook on social media this week, warning troops to think twice before divulging some information on Facebook or Twitter that could be exploited by adversaries. The guide comes a year after the Pentagon announced a new policy that officially opened the door to web 2.0 sites popular with a younger generation of soldiers. The guide encourages the use of social media but asks troops to exercise common sense and some restraint when it comes to posting on Facebook or Twitter.

Facebook unveils location service Facebook introduced a long-anticipated service called Places yesterday that could help the company tap local and small-business advertisers and sharpen its competition with Google. Facebook's Places borrows heavily from location-based social networks like Foursquare and Gowalla, which allow users to check in at places and broadcast their location to friends. But those companies, as well as others like Yelp, said they saw Facebook's Places as a complement to their own services and as an opportunity to gain additional distribution. Tech Weekly podacst: WikiLeaks, Anonymous and cyber war This week we turn the whole programme over to the extraordinary events that have taken place on the web over the past fortnight.Since the Guardian and four other newspapers around the world printed the details of US diplomatic cables that were leaked to whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, major internet companies and services have been taken offline in a battle between hackers and governments – all over the principle of the freedom of the internet. In this programme we'll discuss whether this could be the first global cyber war, as well as looking at what has happened so far and how the attacks took place. We'll hear how Tom Cruise's video on the virtues of Scientology helped spawn online activists Anonymous, and an expert on electronic transactions gives his view of the success of the Operation Payback attacks. The programme is presented by Jemima Kiss, who is joined by the Guardian's technology editor Charles Arthur, Professor William H Dutton of the Oxford Internet Institute and Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at security experts Sophos. You may also want to listen to our recent Guardian Focus podcast which looks at the future of US diplomacy and the Politics Weekly podcast which discusses whether governments can - and should - keep secrets from their voters.Don't forget to ...• Mail us at tech@guardian.co.uk• Get our Twitter feed for programme updates or follow our Twitter list• Like our Facebook page• See our pics on Flickr/Post your tech picsJemima KissCharles ArthurScott Cawley

Tech Weekly podcast: Email overload On this week's programme we discuss the waning influence of email, as users turn to different tools to communicate more effectively with one another. Are priority inboxes the answer? Or is a whole new method of communication in order? We speak with Jeff Bonfiorte from Xobni (it's inbox, spelt backwards) who explains why email isn't dead, just misunderstood. He offers his insight on how to reach the fabled Inbox Zero.Charles follows the collapse of Haystack, the US State Department's-sponsored anti-censorship software, celebrated for its role in opening up the Iranian web during the violence in the aftermath of Iran's 2009 elections. It has been found to make its users vulnerable to the authoritarian government, rather than anonymous; the team dissects the hype.We look at the latest hacker actions taken against the RIAA and the MPAA, causing their services to go down. Charles argues that there's nothing to be done to stop attacks like this in the future; it's simply part of the weather of the Internet, and we should just bring our umbrellas. And Jemima weighs in on the open-source social network Diaspora, which has released it's first code. The project promotes personal data ownership, a criticism levied against Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook.Plus - we want your questions for the next in our installment of the Startup Surgery. Next week corporate finance specialist Simon Carmichael of Torch Partners will be answering your questions on refining your proposition to take your business to the next level. Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to give $100m to Newark's crumbling schools | Richard Adams Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to appear on Oprah and make $100m donation to rebuild Newark's struggling schoolsMark Zuckerberg, a newly-minted member of the Forbes Rich List, is using some of his wealth to revive Newark's long-struggling public schools, thanks to overtures from Newark's charismatic Democratic mayor Corey Booker. On Friday, Booker and Zuckerberg will appear alongside New Jersey's Republican governor Chris Christie on Oprah Winfrey's talkshow to formally announce the donation and the package of reforms accompanying it. Booker is expected to find matching donations for a total of $200m.According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Christie and Booker will say that the Newark school system, under state control for the last 15 years, will be placed under Booker's authority. Booker, with the governor's support, plans an ambitious series of changes opposed by local teaching unions, including an expansion of charter schools and new standards and teacher appraisal. The city of Newark, the largest in New Jersey, has an unenviable record of corruption, crime, poverty and unemployment that puts it among the worst-off metropolitan areas in the the US.But in recent years, especially since the election of Booker in 2006, the city has seen a modest revival – and earlier this year celebrated its first murder-free month for 44 years.Newark's schools have been no exception to the city's record of woe, and in 1995 the state of New Jersey took over direct control of the school system. In spite of the change of management, 46% of the district's 40,000 students fail to finish high school and only about 40% have basic reading and writing skills by the third grade (aged 8).According to the New York Times, Zuckerberg has no previous connection with the city until he met Booker at a Facebookのファウンダー、Mark Zuckerbergはオプラに表示されるとZuckerbergを、フォーブスリッチリストの新しく鋳造したメンバー、ニューアークの苦労schoolsMarkを再構築するためには$ 100M寄付するアークさんの長期の公立学校に苦しんで復活させる彼の富の一部を使用している場合、申し入れに感謝からニューアークのカリスマ、民主党の市長して、Corey Booker.
Can apps save news journalism? | Adrian Monck Wired argues that apps have supplanted the web – but whether the model works for news organisations is another matterJust when you thought the web was the unassailable media platform of the 21st century, it is cut down by that killer app from the 18th, ye olde magazine.Well Chris Anderson to be precise, who argues in Wired that applications have supplanted the web. Strangely, Anderson makes his case for apps below a chart headlining video as the internet's single biggest growth area for traffic (51% of all US internet traffic, to be precise). But taking Anderson's argument face on, where does the rise of the app leave the news business, the flatulent Rottweiler in the dog shelter of online content? Can apps give it a caring home at last? The web is already a winner-takes-all environment with Facebook its portal, and Google its yellow pages. Journalism failed to take its chance in the information revolution. But now with the move to social and mobile, phones and e-readers, is there a second chance?Serious news organisations have placed their bets. With Apple selling a million iPads in barely a month, paid iPad applications from the likes of the Times and the Financial Times line up on app stores with free offerings from the BBC and Thomson Reuters. But already there are signs that native newsreaders like Flipboard for the iPad and LeNewz for the iPhone are stealing a march on the standalone offerings of news providers. Numbers may still be modest but design, usability and social integration all place them well ahead of individual apps. Flipboard (my own app of choice) visualises the content of links shared on social networks. In other words, it builds a newspaper out of things you know other people are reading because they are sharing them – every editor's nightmare.
BlackBerry users in the Gulf have their say Angry reaction from people who live and work in the Gulf on the proposed BlackBerry banBlackBerry users who work in the Gulf states offer their views on the ban. (They all wished to remain completely anonymous.)• I work as a sales executive in Dubai. I think the ban is very unfair. It is so selfish of the authorities to ban an essential part of people's life.I use the BlackBerry for keeping in constant touch with my family and friends back home in Zambia; BlackBerry Messenger is the most cost effective way of keeping in touch. I'm always on the move so I use my BlackBerry to check the news as well as updating my Twitter and Facebook accounts.I work for a freight forwarding company and since I don't sit in the office for long, I use my BlackBerry to email and edit documents on the move. The BlackBerry is practically part of me and I use it from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed. I really don't know what I will do when the ban comes into effect, without it I feel a bit handicapped.• I live and work in the UAE. I have a corporate BlackBerry, which I use for work purposes such as emails, phone calls, and occasionally texts. It makes my job much more efficient as I don't have to log in to a computer to check basic emails. I do travel a lot so the BB is very handy when I don't have time or the ability to log into a computer. As for impact, it will mean less timely responses to emails, and it means more emails to deal with at certain points during the day.I believe it will set back business in Dubai, since business and technology seem to go hand in hand. Some businesses need to operate out of places like the UAE more than others, so it may persuade businesses that don't need to operate in the region to set up shop elsewhere.I'm not sure what the replacement strategy
