    • BAA airport strike: travel advice
Advice for people using BAA airports, including information about insurance and package holidaysWhich airports are affected? If the strike goes ahead, BAA would be forced to shut its six airports: Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton. When are the strikes?Members of the Unite union voted today for strike action, but the union must give seven days' notice before going on strike. Its leaders will meet on Monday to decide when the walkout will begin and how long the action will last. The earliest a strike could begin is 23 August. It is thought Unite could target the August bank holiday weekend, which starts on Saturday 28 August, as this is likely to be a very busy period for the airports. Why is this happening? The strike action has been called over a pay dispute. BAA is offering staff a 1% pay rise plus another 0.5% linked to changes to the current agreement on sickness. But Unite wants more for its members, partly because staff had a pay freeze last year. There is also disagreement over performance-related bonuses worth £1,150, which staff will not receive this year. What are the chances of the strikes not happening?BAA says no previous union action has ever completely shut down its airports. In the last planned walkout in 2002, the strike was cancelled after the company made an improved offer to the union. What should you do if your flights are cancelled? When airlines have previously been affected by strike action not carried out by their own employees, they have generally offered passengers a refund or an alternative ticket – unless a flight can be found that is within two hours of the original scheduled time of departure, or within four hours of the original scheduled arrival time.If your flight is set to be affected, you should contact your a

Cairn Energy was founded in 1981 by Bill Gammell and is now India's fourth-biggest oil and gas companyFounded in 1981 by the former Scotland rugby player Sir Bill Gammell, Cairn Energy, which is in talks with Vedanta over a stake in Cairn's Indian spin-off, is an oil exploration and extraction company, headquartered in Edinburgh. Cairn's first big strike was in Pennsylvania. After being set up as a venture capital start-up it was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1998. Gammell, who is still chief executive, was knighted in 2006.Cairn Energy grew rapidly after moving into south Asia in the 1990s, and between 1990-2010 average output increased from 5,000 boe (barrels of oil equivalent) a day to more than 77,000 boe/day. Since 2004, it has moved between the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250, as its market capitalisation has fluctuated. However, its current market capitalisation of over £6bn puts in the top 50 capitalised companies listed in the UK.But the last five years have been turbulent. During the commodity boom of 2007, the company's share price soared to a high of 373p, only to fall by 70% in the latter half of 2008as a result of the global recession and turbulence in commodity markets. Its current market capitalisation of more than £6bn puts it in Britain's top 50 companies. In 2004 Cairn India – which is majority-owned by Cairn Energy – discovered the Mangala oilfield in Rajasthan, the largest oil discovery in India since 1985. Cairn India, listed since 2007 on the Bombay stock exchange, has a market capitalisation of $13bn, making it the fourth-largest oil and gas company in India.Cairn Energy has identified Greenland as an important future site for exploration and extraction, but will also maintain its focus in South Asia.Cairn EnergyOilOil and gas companiesIndiag

    • Letters: Are the police beyond the law?
I am writing you regarding the disturbing circumstances surrounding the death of Ian Tomlinson (Report, 23 July). If you or I launched an unprovoked attack on a fellow member of the public, in front of numerous witnesses, and the act was captured on film, would we face prosecution? If this does not merit a criminal charge, what exactly would a UK policeman have to do in order to face legal sanction? It seems, in light of these events, impossible to resist the conclusion that the police are above the law.Aside from the fact that an innocent man is dead, and his family will receive no justice, the most depressing facet of this is that this outcome was not surprising. The police will, given the option, always protect their own. Presumably, the almost certain knowledge that he would face no legal sanction, was one reason the officer in question felt free to administer an unprovoked, vicious and cowardly beating to Mr Tomlinson.I do not fear crime or terrorists; they do not impinge upon my daily life. However, I now hesitate to express my freedom of speech by attending political demonstrations, for fear of the violence and intimidation of the police. Is this paranoid? We now know that the police are free to strike innocent members of the public (whether engaging in protests or simply walking home as Tomlinson was) without sanction; worse, the police know this too.How can politicians ask us to engage in politics, when political demonstrations are met with extreme violence, and the police are beyond the law?Dr Anders IngramEdinburgh• The failure to prosecute the officer who struck Ian Tomlinson is bad for everyone. • From the West Bank | Theatre review
Tron, GlasgowAfter blanket coverage of the intricacies of the British political system, how refreshing to be reminded of the wider world. And how invigorating, in this opening salvo of Mayfesto, a two-week programme of politically inspired drama, to see it done so consummately. In three short and substantial plays, actor-directors Cora Bissett and Ewan Donald – joined on stage by an equally authoritative Benny Young – take us to a Palestine where righteous anger vies with philosophical resignation as the only workable response to an unjust occupation. Performed with grace and clarity, these vignettes capture the rage, bewilderment and hope-against-hope that is born out of oppression. It opens with An Imagined Sarha, a new adaptation by David Greig of a memoir by Raja Shehadeh, whose When the Bulbul Stopped Singing he adapted for Edinburgh's Traverse in 2004. As in that play, Shehadeh comes across as the wise and urbane Palestinian, this time bridging a seemingly impossible cultural divide as he joins a hashish-smoking Israeli settler in the Ramallah hills and, transcending prejudice, discovers a common humanity. In contrast to Shehadeh's guru-like patience, the Bedouin refugee in Franca Rame's An Arab Woman Speaks is a fiery activist with no tolerance for injustice. Superbly played by Bissett, she tells a distressing and inspirational true story that makes the link between the oppression of women and the subjugation of a people. It is a story that ranges from domestic violence to political assassination, a narrative arc that is hard for the outsider to contemplate. It is this sense of disconnection that Greig captures in the third play, Ramallah, a wry sketch in which a playwright finds himself incapable of communicatin トロン、英国の政治システムの複雑さのGlasgowAfter毛布カバー、どのようにさわやかな、より広い世界のことを思い出したする

An almighty row has broken out at Leeds University, where the Leeds student newspaper has been accused of antisemitism for an interview it published with a leading Palestinian journalist. In a special report for Sounds Jewish, Henrietta Foster visits the Leeds campus and speaks to the students caught up in the dispute. The Guardian's Jonathan Freedland and the founder of Muslims4UK, Inayat Bunglawala, join Jason in the studio to discuss whether free speech is rapidly turning into hate speech on British campuses. Also in this month's show: what's the true meaning of one of the most expressive Yiddish words, broigus? Is it just a slight grudge – or a bitter hatred that can split a family for generations? And why is it that occasions that should be a source of joy – weddings, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs – often end up causing a broigus? We'll hear some real-life stories of family rows that started small and went nuclear. Finally Jason is joined by two special guests – Ronna and Beverly – two motormouth yentas from America, pushy, noisy, adorable Jewish ladies of a certain age – as they serve up their unique brand of advice on life, sex and Streisand in London's West End and at the Edinburgh Festival later this year.Sounds Jewish is produced with the Jewish Community Centre for LondonPost your comments on the blog below or find us on Facebook and TwitterJason Solomons 全能の行はリーズ大学、リーズの学生新聞は、反ユダヤ主義のインタビューのためには、主要なパレスチナのジャーナリストで公開されて非難されているで壊れている

    • Gordon Strachan obituary
My friend Gordon Strachan, who has died aged 76, was a maverick theologian, a Church of Scotland minister who loved to turn ideas inside out and challenge orthodox assumptions. His studies led him from history at Oxford to theology at New College, Edinburgh, where he did his PhD on Edward Irving, a 19th-century Scottish divine denounced as a heretic. In between research, Gordon was active in the Iona Community, spending summers helping rebuild the ruined medieval abbey on Iona in the Inner Hebrides. He became a minister in Dalmarnock in the East End of Glasgow, engaging his parishioners in the kind of inspiring activities integral to his character.Gordon had a wicked sense of humour and occasion. No one who was there will ever forget him dressed as Merlin at the pageant organised in celebration of the launch of his book The Return of Merlin (2006), when friends became a vast cast of characters from the Arthurian legends, with Gordon's son Christopher and friends as the knights of the Round Table.Tall and striking in looks, Gordon was a pied piper figure, particularly for the many students he taught in 25 years of tutoring Edinburgh University's Lifelong Learning courses. He led groups on Merlin quests to Glastonbury; Ruskin walks, imbued with nature poetry; and pilgrimages to Chartres, to explore links between architecture and sacred geometry. He came into his own when he met his wife, Elspeth, in the early 1970s across a crowded New College library. They went on to run the Netherbow Arts Centre in Edinburgh for six years, establishing a crucible of creativity involving artists, poets, musicians, ecologists and feminists. My wife, Monica Macmillan, who has died aged 62, was born in Zomba, the former capital of Nyasaland, now Malawi, where her family had close links with the nationalist leaders who fought for independence in 1964.When these leaders split with the dictatorial Hastings Banda in the cabinet crisis of October that year, the Malawi government attempted to recall Monica from Orpington, Kent, where she was training as a nurse. She fled, with nothing more than the clothes she was wearing, pursued by members of the Malawi High Commission, to Scotland. She was given refuge by the Church of Scotland, with which her family was closely associated, and continued her training in Edinburgh, but became a political exile. She moved in 1973 to Zambia, where she worked for eight years as a midwife in Lusaka. It was through the South African ANC in exile that we met, in 1978. We were married in 1980.If an army marches on its stomach, Monica made her own contribution to the liberation of South Africa – cooking hundreds of meals for ANC members who often had to flee their homes in Lusaka for fear of attack. Among those she fed were many of the leaders of the ANC who were to form the post-apartheid South African government. In the early 1990s, when the HIV/Aids epidemic was gathering ground, Monica began to work as a nurse and counsellor at Hope House, a testing and counselling centre in Lusaka. As a researcher, she contributed to a number of social scientific papers and delivered one on Aids and traditional healers at a world conference on HIV/Aids in Canada in 1995.Moving to Umtata in South Africa in 1996, she was shocked to find how uninformed people there were about HIV/Aids. • Letters: High-speed rail plans should benefit us all
Simon Jenkins (High-speed rail will bleed us all for a few rich travellers, 6 January) argues that upgrading existing lines is sufficient to improve north-south rail connections, and a new high-speed line is unnecessary. London already experiences the benefits of high-speed rail to the continent, having cancelled the northern connections, and Jenkins appears reluctant to extend the privilege northwards. For many years we have endured line closures to squeeze every last drop from existing lines, which run close to full capacity. Meanwhile access is restricted by high fares designed to create profit in a model for franchising established in another era.I can now travel to Preston in two hours, but without stops for my connection at Wigan (or anywhere else), and the stopping train that Jenkins advocates takes 30 minutes longer. Perhaps funding for the Crossrail project, itself rendered obsolete by the crash of the City and the unpopular third runway at Heathrow, should transfer to an HS2 project, also designed to carry articulated trailers by night, which will regenerate northern manufacturing industry.Dr Jim Ford Southport• At last, a sensible appraisal of the high-speed rail bandwagon. Why is shaving minutes off already fast rail connections so important? London to Manchester in two hours, and to Edinburgh in four and a half, is already competitive with air travel. It is the rest of the system that needs to be modernised. When Plymouth to York takes six hours, and Truro to Liverpool takes eight, it's clear why regional air travel is still attractive.Michael ThornHelston, CornwallRail transportTransportTransport policyRail travelBusiness travelguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds サイモンジェンキンス(高速鉄道のすべての1月6日)をアップグレードする既存の生産ラインの北を向上させるのに十分である南鉄道の接続など、新たな高速回線は不要であると主張するいくつかの豊富な旅行のため私たちに出血します

My dear friend 。ános Kass, who has died aged 82, was Hungary's foremost graphic artist and book illustrator. He made many friends within the British graphic art fraternity while spending some months in London during 1980, working on one of the earliest, fully digitised computer-animated films, Dilemma, with John Halas. He had already won recognition with his illustrations and book designs. At the 1973 Leipzig book fair, his work was awarded the title of best illustrated book at the fair. This accolade was repeated at the Frankfurt fair in 1999.。ános's drawings, etchings and silk-screen prints were exhibited in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge in 1989 and in 1990 at London Olympia. He later held a one-man show in Edinburgh. His artistic versatility was quite remarkable, ranging from postage stamps (including a beautiful series on the history of medicine) to fine and tender etching/aquatint illustrations for Shakespeare's Hamlet, or bold and colourful silk-screens inspired by Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle.。ános was born in Szeged, Hungary. He illustrated something like 400 books, classical novels and children's stories, among them an elegant edition of Imre Madách's 19th-century drama The Tragedy of Man, published in Iain MacLeod's translation by Edinburgh's Canongate press in 1993. He won Hungary's highest artistic award, the Kossuth prize, and was an elected member of the Széchenyi academy.Eszter Kass, his daughter from a first marriage to the artist Gabriella Hajnal, also became an artist. • Letters: Kyrgyzstan – hopes for a positive future
The Guardian is to be congratulated on its recent coverage of the humanitarian disaster in southern Kyrgyzstan. Edward Stourton's article (Kyrgyzstan: Stalin's deadly legacy, 21 June) set out some of the potential causes of the conflict. However, we now need to focus on how people in the UK can help make sure that vital aid – food, shelter, medical help – gets to those people who have been dispossessed and whose family and friends have been so brutally murdered in Osh and Jalalabad.Uzbek people who haven't been able to flee across the border to Uzbekistan have been forced to live in isolated ghettos where they still fear for their lives. Help is needed in order to fund and support activities that promote peace between Uzbek and Kyrgyz people. There is now hope that this could happen as the recent referendum result (Report, 28 June) is real positive progress for Kyrgyzstan in its move towards parliamentary democracy.A new voluntary initiative – Action for Peace in Kyrgyzstan – has been launched in order to help build bridges in these communities as well as provide emergency aid. Immediate plans involve supporting conflict victims in rebuilding their houses; building trust and promoting peace among people living in the city; restoring the basic infrastructure of Jalalabad and Osh by involving both Uzbek and Kyrgyz volunteers.Action for Peace is working in partnership with the Kyrgyz Red Cross/Crescent. This initiative must be given all the support it needs so that people whose lives have been so brutally shattered can now be helped to find peace and security.Penny RichardsonEdinburghKyrgyzstanUzbekistanInternational aid and developmentguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds ガーディアンは、南部のキルギスでの人道災害の最近の報道に祝福される

The decision to close the Middlesex University philosophy department has roused the indignation of the academic community across the world (Reason for being, Education, 18 May). Rated the highest of all Middlesex's departments in the Research Assessment Exercise, it is recognised internationally as a beacon of philosophical study. As publishers we have benefited in many ways from the skills of those teaching at the department, and from the lively atmosphere of debate engendered across the disciplines by its work. Consequently, we feel bound to speak up in its defence. The closing of this department would be disastrous for the academic and intellectual life of this country, and we urge that the decision to do so be reconsidered.Further, we wish to express grave concern at the suspension, on 21 May, of Professor Peter Hallward, Professor Peter Osborne and a number of Middlesex University students.
