- Google's quarterly profit falls short of some estimates
Google Inc. on Thursday reported that its profit rose nearly 37 percent in the first quarter of this year, slightly better than consensus estimate but falling short of some analysts' higher expectations.
In the three months ended on March 31, Google earned 1.96 billion U.S. dollars or 6.06 dollars a share, compared with 1.42 billion dollars or 4.49 dollars a share in the year-ago period.

Sands China Ltd, Asia's biggest listed casino operator, said 2009 profit rose 22 percent on higher spending in the world's biggest gambling hub.
Net income increased to $213.8 million from $175.7 million a year earlier, Sands China, which has the second-biggest market share among Macao casinos, said in a statement to Hong Kong's stock exchange on Tuesday. Copper prices recorded the largest gain in 11 months on Monday after a massive quake in Chile halted the production of four mines in the world's largest copper producer.
The May delivery gained 20.3 cents, or 6.2 percent, to 3.4870 U.S. dollars a pound at 10:05 a.m. Sydney time (0005 GMT) in after-hours electronic trading on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg reported.
It was the largest intraday gain for the most-active futures since April last year.
