Research by Stonewall suggests that gay people are coming out earlier. When did you tell your friends or family you were gay?The average age at which people come out has fallen over the last 40 years, according to gay rights group, Stonewall.The charity found that the average age of coming out for over-60s was 37; for people in their 30s it was 21; and for those now aged 18-24 was 17.Coming out is a very personal process, with different people able to broach the issue of their sexuality at different stages in their lives. It's a great historic moment, the repeal of the don't ask don't tell law, allowing gay people to serve openly in the military, making the US just about the last advanced country to reach this very normal point.John McCain, on whose increasingly shabby escutcheon this blot will linger, argued on the Senate floor Saturday that there's no proof that the policy has hurt the armed services. Bollocks. We know that more than 13,000 people, presumably most of them otherwise good to exemplary, have been booted from the military because of their sexuality. And of course it is impossible to know how many talented young people who were eager to lend their talents to their country simply didn't bother. If 13,000 people were kicked out and X number who wanted to couldn't serve, I'd say that's damage.The vote is interesting in certain respects. The 65-31 Senate tally included six Republicans, as you've probably read, and good for them: Scott Brown, Richard Burr, Susan Collins, John Ensign, Mark Kirk, Lisa Murkowski, Olympia Snowe and George Voinovich. Burr of North Carolina and Ensign of Nevada are the most interesting. The others are all from blue states and can credibly be called occasional moderates. Burr and Ensign are conservatives, but they represent blue-states-for-now too (in the sense that Obama won them), so we see that some historically conservative states are indeed changing.On the Democratic side, it's interesting that three Democrats from purple-to-red states who face reelection in 2012 bit the bullet and voted yes: Jim Webb of Virginia, Jon Tester of Montana and Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Less courage from Joe Manchin of West Virginia, also a red-stater up in 2012. He ducked the vote. The important yet depressing Eyes Wide Open is true to life: it shows a Hassidic community that preaches sexual intolerance and a terror of differenceEyes Wide Open may be sensitively filmed and movingly narrated, but it is also profoundly depressing. Set in a fundamentalist religious community in Jerusalem, it tells the story of two men who fall in love and embark on an illicit affair. Same-sex relationships within any conservative religious community are generally forbidden. Orthodox Judaism, for its part, teaches that men and women should marry young, have lots of babies and live as purely and God-fearingly as possible. This film follows on the heels of Sandi Simcha DuBowski's fascinating 2001 documentary Trembling Before G-d, which interviews lesbian and gay Orthodox Jews trying to come to terms with their sexuality. The fascination for me was the subjects' allegiance to their religion rather than their sexuality. Why do they stay wedded to a set of beliefs that interprets their lifestyles as an abomination? What pull does fundamentalist religion have for these people, who, unlike many others, could walk away into the arms of another community?My partner Harriet's brother, Daniel, is a Hassidic Jew living just outside Jerusalem. Two years ago, Harriet and I – out and proud lesbians – attended the arranged marriage of Daniel's 17-year-old daughter. As I stood talking to Harriet's parents, the father of the groom approached me, thinking I was Harriet. I braced myself. Although a couple of Chinese women had been ordained as an emergency measure in Hong Kong during the war, they renounced their orders after the 1948 Lambeth conference, the 10-yearly gathering of Anglican bishops from around the world, which as far as possible decides what the communion stands for.The American women who put themselves forward for ordination after the first wave of feminism in the 70s were less disposed to submit to authority. The 1978 Lambeth conference asked in vain for there to be no further women ordained; by 1988 the conference was trying to stop the Americans electing a woman bishop. In 1989 the diocese of Massachusetts chose Barbara Harris anyway.But members of the Episcopal church of the US did not all share the liberal values of New England. In the south there was a noisy and well-funded conservative backlash. In 1998, the central arguments at the Lambeth conference were about gay people, and the conservative Americans, who saw this as the issue on which to avenge their defeat over women, recruited hundreds of African bishops to their cause in advance. Two comments from members of Philippa Stroud's church are lifted above the lineIt's hard to believe but not everyone reads all the comments that appear on this site; a couple of days into the arguments about Philippa Stroud and her church in Bedford two people who knew her or belong to her church turned up. So I am copying them up here, for the perspectives they offer on the question of homosexuality and homelessness. First Micah6v8 I attended both the CitizensUK event as part of the Citizens for Sanctuary delegation and also attend a New Frontiers Church. Part of my work is in a ecumenical project welcoming refugees and asylum seekers of all faiths or none and many friends here and at my church hold differing beliefs of some issues. But we come together to help people and at times to challenge politicians. Personally I would identify as a liberal evangelical and distance myself from what I see as a hardline Christian Right who seem to emphasise family, sexuality and abortion as the only key issues for Christians. In my church I see a loving welcome to people from all cultures and backgrounds and determined efforts to serve the local community offering free no-strings attached English classes. If I witnessed a negative reaction to an openly gay attendee from some members I would question my place in the church and I would talk to leaders about it. ... I checked about praying for release from demons in my church and the guess is this has maybe happened four times in ten years, none of these related to homosexuality. General George Casey says armies ending gay and lesbian discrimination have experienced no detriment to battle readinessThe US army chief of staff today said he would consult generals from Britain and Canada about gay men and lesbians serving in the military, adding that armies ending discrimination had experienced no detriment to their battle readiness.But General George Casey and army secretary John McHugh said they opposed an effort to stop openly gay soldiers being discharged while the Pentagon takes a year to study the repeal of a policy barring them from serving.Their testimony in the Senate today dashed the hopes of gay soldiers and others that Congress will pass a moratorium on discharges while military brass review personnel policies over the next year.Barack Obama and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, oppose the Clinton-era policy that allows gay people to serve in the military so long as they keep their sexuality hidden. Since 1994 more than 13,500 gay people have been discharged under the policy, one of the last instances of official discrimination in the US.Opponents of the policy say it keeps patriotic men and women out of the military while the US is fighting two wars. In Afghanistan, US troops serve alongside British units that include openly gay soldiers, and US generals have said they have seen no problems.The remarks came today as Congress considered inserting a moratorium on discharges into the US defence budget for next year.
