Liberals across all faiths should create a coalition to turn the fundamentalist tideThe compromises of coalition government are presenting many of us who are political liberals with the unsettling prospect of seeing cherished principles watered down in favour of policies driven by conservative ideology. For theological liberals this is an all too familiar state of affairs. For much of the last hundred years theological conservatism and its close ally, fundamentalism, have been in the ascendant across the world's major faiths, and liberalism in steady retreat.The consequences of this are all too clear to see: rising levels of bigotry within and across faiths, judgmental attitudes leaving no room for generous, fuzzy broad-mindedness, and an obsessive interest in sexual behaviour expressed especially in rampant homophobia.Increasingly, the divisions within Christianity are not denominational but rather between liberals and conservatives. Powerful new alliances are being forged between Roman Catholics, evangelical Protestants and Pentecostalists against abortion, homosexuality and liberalising social and cultural tendencies. It is not inconceivable that fundamentalist Muslims and Jews will soon also be entering these coalitions.What can those of a liberal theological inclination do in the face of this fundamentalist tide? We, too, need to band together across both denominational and faith boundaries. There are strong liberal traditions within all three of the great monotheistic faiths. In Judaism it is the rabbinic approach of imaginative interpretation of the Torah, so different from the literalism of the scribes and the Pharisees with whom Jesus clashed. Apparently we feel that ethical shopping gives us licence to be selfish in other areas.What a weight this is off the minds of those of us whose ideals bob frustratingly out of reach of reality. Yes, I could buy all my clothes from Oxfam and live on vegetables grown within walking distance, but I'd only end up whipping the kids for spilling yoghurt. Better to let things find their own level.It doesn't just apply to shopping or environmentalism, of course. The idea is that we carry round a kind of ledger in our heads for ethical double-entry bookkeeping. But the manufacturer, Genentech, has developed and trialled and licensed a version of Avastin, in the right-sized shots, which it calls Lucentis. And Lucentis costs - in the UK - over £700 an injection (a course is something like 14). Avastin is a fraction of the price.With 26,000 new cases of wet AMD in the UK every year, the bills are starting to look prohibitive. The UK government is taking unprecedented steps which could allow the use of cheap Avastin instead. Barack Obama's healthcare bill shows the right wing's failure of imagination – a fact we should recognise in our own electionIn a 50-year involvement in politics, I have often found that friendship is perfectly possible with people of very different political views from my own. Over a 20-year period as a member of the House of Commons, I often found that some of the more stimulating and amusing companions came from the ranks of those whose political views I abominated. I have often puzzled over the fact that people who are so agreeable in personal terms can hold views about society and social issues that are so unattractive. People who are kind to animals, generous to their friends, supportive of family members who need support, exhibit a breathtaking and at time cruel lack of generosity, compassion and understanding when it comes to those who are a little more distant from them in social or cultural or ethnic terms.My explanation of this apparent paradox is that people who hold rightwing views (excluding those who are just plain nasty) often suffer from a failure of imagination. Their impulses are fine and generous when they relate to people who are recognisable and close to them – my own dear parents were a case in point. But they are unable to project those commendable responses to a wider range because they are simply unable to understand that society is made up of people who are just as dear to others as their own friends and family are to them.These thoughts were prompted all over again by reports of the debate over Barack Obama's healthcare bill. Is it all just pointless talk about a non-existent being?What does theology have to do with reality? Serious question; if you take the Dawkins view – that theology is the study of a non-existent being – all theological talk is about nothing. It isn't even nonsense. Then there is a more generous atheist view, which says that theology is whatever theologians do, so part of it is philosophy, and part, perhaps, is history, or textual criticism. Christians, of course will have a third take, or a fourth. Most, in practice, suppose that atheists are half right: theology is airy-fairy stuff that interests theologians, but normal people just get on with worshipping. Theologians themselves, however, have clear views on what they are doing and how it relates to reality. China's largest steel mill Baoshan Iron & Steel (Baosteel) has raised March manufacturer prices.
The price hikes range from 200 to 700 yuan per ton, with prices of generous plates up 200 yuan per ton, and prices of hot rolling and cold rolling plates rising 300 yuan per ton.
