With the release of GDP for 31 provinces in China, 14 provinces have been revealed as having a GDP that exceeds 1 trillion yuan. They are Guangdong, with 3.9 trillion yuan GDP ranking first, Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang, Henan, Hebei, Liaoning, Shanghai, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Fujian, Beijing, and Anhui.
Despite experiencing a nationwide slide, China's gross domestic product (GDP) still rose 8.7 percent year-on-year in 2009 to reach 33.53 trillion yuan.

- Property prices continue to climb across country
Property prices in China's 70 major cities climbed 7.8 percent in December from a year earlier, the fastest pace in 18 months, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said yesterday.

Chinese journalist Li Junqi has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for taking bribes to help cover up a coal mine disaster. The Hebei bureau chief of Farmers' Daily was among a number of journalists paid a total of £240,000 by mine officials, who are also accused of moving bodies and destroying after a July 2008 explosion in which 34 miners and a rescue worker were killed.
