But this time Boehner was out-played by the tea party, the Club for Growth and even Sarah Palin, all pushing for the conservative rump to oppose his plan on the grounds that it didn't go far enough in throttling the government.Palin even put out a chilling message on Facebook – that's modern politics for you – before the planned vote on Thursday, hinting at primary challenges from the right against those Republicans voting for the Boehner bill.Some of the Republican nay-sayers may even believe the – how can one put this politely? – nonsense about a default being a way of curbing the growth of government. Well it is, assuming you also think that one way to lose weight is by cutting off your head.What happens next? Formed in Seattle in 1987, the band came to be regarded by many as second only to Nirvana when grunge rock became popular in the early 1990s.Starr, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, had previously played with the guitarist Jerry Cantrell and the drummer Sean Kinney in a group called Diamond Lie. Shortly after being joined by the vocalist Layne Staley, they renamed themselves Alice in Chains and developed a sound that mixed huge, Black Sabbath-flavoured riffs with the aggression and nihilistic angst of punk.Alice in Chains quickly won a loyal following around Seattle and Washington state. Cantrell's expressive guitar textures meshed well with Staley's weary vocals while Starr and Kinney locked down huge, rolling rhythms. A local promoter, Randy Hauser, was so impressed by the band that he financed a recording demo and passed it on to Susan Silver, the manager of another emerging Seattle group, Soundgarden.With Silver as their manager, the band signed to Columbia Records and released an EP, We Die Young, in July 1990, attracting a strong response from US rock radio. A month later, the group's debut album, Facelift, was released to a positive critical response but modest initial sales.Seattle was becoming known for a popular new American rock sound dubbed grunge, which blurred the boundaries between heavy metal and hardcore punk and eschewed the posturing that had rendered the Los Angeles rock scene a cartoon. Barbican, LondonIt's a familiar challenge: how do you turn a multi-artist concept album into a coherent live event? Too many individuals and it becomes too bitty; too few and it can lose the grand idea that made it work in the first place.In the case of Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura, the concept was to feature the new sound of Cuba. At the heart of the project is musical director and virtuoso pianist Roberto Fonseca. The double album, which comprises a new studio disc coupled with a 16-track compilation, embraces more than a dozen flavours of style and rhythm, and many different artists.In performance, DJ and taste-maker Peterson stands to one side of his 10-piece band, occasionally twiddling knobs or triggering beats from a portable console.On record, Peterson and his team seem to have the final cut; in concert it is Fonseca who dominates, revealing the creative tension between the pianist's world-jazz ambitions and Peterson's more populist, inclusive approach. Fonseca's predilection for ultrafast, dazzling pianism means that mid-tempo pop songs unexpectedly mutate into finger-busting virtuosity. And his regular quintet is much tighter than the full lineup, which includes genial rappers Ogguere.Peterson sets the pace for certain numbers, mixing in samples, atmospheres and field recordings, or triggering a thumping four-on-the-floor kick drum.
