Liberal Judaism looks forward to celebrating civil partnerships under its roofs. We hope that other religions follow suitIn 2005, the rabbinic conference of Liberal Judaism published Covenant of Love, a service of commitment for same-sex couples, and in doing so became the first religious movement in the country to produce official liturgy for this purpose. The same-sex commitment ceremony affirms the importance and holiness of marriage and Jewish family life. We remain steadfastly committed to the justice of civil partnerships and we see this as an extension of our belief that all are equal and created b'tselem Elohim – in the image of God. Our rabbis have long acknowledged that modern ethical, psychological and scientific insight demands a change in traditional attitudes to same-sex relationships, and have welcomed lesbians and gay men as members of its congregations, as teachers and as rabbis. We truly celebrate this inclusion and with it the enrichment that it brings to our community.Liberal Judaism's engagement in such ceremonies is not forced on our rabbis or congregations. Our rabbis have simply created the possibility for an affirmation of the sanctity of a loving and committed same-sex relationship within the bounds of Judaism. Neither do we seek to enforce our beliefs and practices on any other religious denomination, Jewish or otherwise. However, we have seen that our courage in making such blessings possible has emboldened other religious movements and individuals to follow suit, albeit timidly at times.Likewise, the amendment to the equality bill, proposed by Lord Alli, does not seek to force any organisation or individual to do anything in respect of civil partnerships. Respected British expert in American history, prolific author and cricket fanaticJack Pole, who has died aged 87, was one of the most erudite and insightful of British historians of early American history, and one of the first British historians of America whose work was taken seriously by US historians. It is promiscuity that is undermining marriage in modern society; civil partnerships do exactly the oppositeThe majority of those who enter into a civil partnership do so with the same sense of commitment as those who get married, sometimes, as events prove, with a rather greater commitment in reality. As with a wedding, they usually wish to surround the ceremony with celebration. Those with a religious faith see it as one of the most solemn and sacred moments in the living out of their faith, and not surprisingly, wish to set it in a religious context with a religious blessing.At the moment those who wish such a blessing must arrange it after the legal ceremony, which cannot take place on religious premises, and if the legalities and the blessing are on the same secular premises, the registrar must have left before the religious service can begin. But three faith communities, the Quakers, Liberal Jews and Unitarians, want the freedom to set the legal ceremony itself in a religious context. They wish to hold it in a meeting house, synagogue or church and surround it with appropriate prayers. For them, as for the couples concerned, the bringing about of such a partnership is not a mere legality, it is a solemn and serious commitment undertaken in faith before God, which they wish to perform in a place of worship. That is why Lord Alli has been so passionate about his amendment to the equalities bill now going through parliament, which would allow this.Some Church of England bishops, who were hardly enthusiastic about civil partnerships in the first place, fear that if this is allowed it would blur the distinction them and marriage. French theatre-maker and Beckett specialistPierre Chabert, who has died of a cerebral haemorrhage aged 70, was one of France's leading actors in the intellectual theatre. At first it was set to sit in secret, which would have effectively guaranteed that the Chilcot committee of the great and the grand would prove a damp squib. Howls of protest soon forced Gordon Brown to remove the wraps from the Iraq inquiry. But even then it remained tainted by the suggestion that he himself would appear only after the voters had returned their judgment on him. Now, after the adroit application of Liberal Democrat pressure, the prime minister and this establishment probe have belatedly agreed they should meet before polling day.Not before time. Sir John Chilcot's initial hints that keeping above the political fray necessitated the saving of prime ministerial blushes suggested a big misunderstanding of his task. He is not required to write a history book but to hold people and processes to account for their role in the shaping and taking of what was always a profoundly political decision. For most, it is true, the war is now a mere memory, albeit a miserable one. Yet for a significant minority it remains live, precisely because no one has yet apologised for what proved to be the most disastrous single act of any modern British government. Among those who are still angry are large numbers of voters who abandoned Labour in 2005 precisely because of the war. It is of course a grave inconvenience to Labour that – at the very point when these people might otherwise be contemplating rallying round to see off a resurgent and vehemently pro-war Conservative party – they will now be reminded of New Labour's great sin not merely by Jack Straw's squirming, or by Tony Blair's predictable defiance next week, but also by Mr Brown's own awkward attempt to explain why, as chancellor, he signed the cheques.Labour will have to lump it. The call for a Windrush Day emulates a long-running US campaign for a public holiday recognising diversity and cultural identity, with Martin Luther King, Jr Day finally becoming a reality in 1986.We should choose 22 June, the day when the MV Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury in 1948: a powerful and iconic symbol of the rise of modern-day multicultural Britain. The Windrush is not simply a symbol of the 492 Caribbean men and women who arrived on that ship – the first big group of postwar immigrants from the West Indies – but of everyone who came from the Empire; British subjects who saw Britain as their mother country. The seeds of modern migration were sown in these former colonies, from which 2.5 million men and women volunteered to fight fascism during the second world war.The fight for a tolerant, respectful society goes on – and a Windrush Day would be the best answer to the BNP and its sympathisers, who believe that multiculturalism has failed and that Britain should to return to how it looked in 1950.There's an urgency to this, too, since the Windrush generation is fast disappearing. Many of those born between 1910 and 1940 may not be around at the 70th anniversary Windrush celebrations in 2018.
