    • Leading questions: Ashley Thomas, Stonewall
The workplace associate on tackling inequality in the NHSWhat does winning the 2011 Afiya future generations leader award mean to you?It was a big surprise. I wasn't previously aware of Afiya, which is a charity that specialises in trying to reduce health inequalities in black and minority ethnic (BME) communities. I've grown up around healthcare so it was interesting to finally see a person from a BME background being recognised for their contribution to the healthcare system. It was really quite meaningful. What do you do at Stonewall? Our workplace programme encourages employers across the UK to create the most inclusive workplaces possible for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees. Part of my job is to lead our work with the NHS.Why are these issues important to you?The NHS is one of the most important symbols of why Britain is a great country and has a strong foundation in fairness, and I think that's why we've been able to make significant progress on lesbian, gay and bisexual equality generally. In terms of personal interest, my family background has had an influence – my mum is a mental health nurse, my dad works at a strategic health authority and my sister used to work for a primary care trust. I was brought up to believe that the NHS belongs to everyone and that everybody should have equal access to healthcare. How good is the NHS in equality? The NHS has done great work in gender and racial equality and now it is starting to turn its attention to every strand of equality, including sexual orientation, so it is definitely improving. Diversity and inclusion is definitely more important now than it was a few years ago. What is your background?I studied psychology as my first degree, thinking I would grow up to be a psychologist, but then I realised it is difficult to NHSWhatの不平等に取り組む上で職場の仲間は、2011年Afiya将来の世代のリーダー賞を受賞するとはどういう意味勝利か?これは大きな驚きだった

    • New news now newsier | Andrew Brown
We have added links from around the web to the side of every story on the Belief siteIf you click through to individual stories, you will see that there are now half a dozen links down the right hand side pointing to remarkable or merely interesting things that are happening elsewhere on the web. Not all of these will be blogged about here: they are things that catch my eye when I look through Google Reader in the mornings. Some are too newsy to blog about: some are just interesting in themselves, and any comment I might add would simply make them duller. But do feel free to discuss them here. If they provoke enough interesting conversation, I can keep a series of open threads for people to talk about. I hope that at some stage these links can appear on the main page, too. In this morning's lot, I particularly liked the BPS story about psychotherapists whose clients confess to murder. There is nothing in it, that I can see, to suggest that they then go to the police with what they know. It looks much more like the traditional Catholic approach to the sanctity of the confessional. So, are these people operating a coverup? Obviously what they are doing can't be illegal: it isn't and couldn't be a crime merely to conceal knowledge of a crime. There are particular crimes which particular people do have a legal duty to report. In some jurisdictions, certainly, these include child abuse. But are there places where psychologists or doctors are legally compelled to report child abuse but not murder? I ask because I don't know the answer. On a related note, there is now a @GdnBelief twitter account. This tracks automatically everything published on the site, and will also have pointers to interesting tweets and stories in it. It's quite distinct from the various personal accoun 私たちはあなたの個別の記事にクリックスルー信念siteIf上のすべての物語の側にウェブからのリンクを追加すると、今半ダースは、または単に面白い驚くべきことを指して右手側を下にリンクがあることがわかります他のウェブ上で起きて

    • Green ... and mean? | Stephen Tomkins
Research shows that buying green products makes you more likely to behave badly. What's the ethical response to that?Is your shopping trolley full of carbon-neutral fair trade vegan goodness? Well, don't expect me to be impressed anymore. The latest research says that as soon as my back's turned you'll be stealing children's lunch money and experimenting on war widows. In their tests, Canadian psychologists Nina Mazar and Chen-Bo Zhong found that people who spent money on green products were, straight afterwards, less likely to be generous and more likely to steal than those who bought non-green stuff. Apparently we feel that ethical shopping gives us licence to be selfish in other areas. What a weight this is off the minds of those of us whose ideals bob frustratingly out of reach of reality. Yes, I could buy all my clothes from Oxfam and live on vegetables grown within walking distance, but I'd only end up whipping the kids for spilling yoghurt. Better to let things find their own level. It doesn't just apply to shopping or environmentalism, of course. The idea is that we carry round a kind of ledger in our heads for ethical double-entry bookkeeping. Doing a bad deed gives us a sense of guilt we expiate by doing a good one, and vice versa.Or if accountancy metaphors don't tot up your spreadsheet, it's as if we have reserves of goodness that we use up by volunteering for the Samaritans and worrying about dolphins, and can replenish by laughing at racist jokes and using other people's milk in the office fridge. If we accept there's something in this – and it rings true for me – it offers quite a troubling challenge to the idea of religious discipline.Any way of life that calls people to be better than they are ought to be a good thing, but runs the risk – acc 研究では、購入、グリーン製品をより行儀が悪い可能性ができますを示しています
