    • Andean voices: Jiovanny Rivadenaira
Community leader Jiovanny Rivadenaira, of Kichwa Anago, Napo river, Ecuador, talks to John VidalWe emphatically do not want to work with the oil companies any more. None of our community will ever do so again. We don't like them because they contaminate our land, soil and water and they bring climate change. We are famous for fighting them. When they first came many people went to them to find work. But the companies have brought nothing but problems like oil spills and polluted water. These days we see the sun when our knowledge says it should be raining. We have seen the climate change. We say that Mother Earth is sick. So, in response to this climate change and the oil companies, we have turned to tourism. With the help of a foundation in Quito we have built a wildlife centre and a lodge. We rotate the work and everyone in the community gets $250 a month when they work. About 70 people work there at any one time, but 170 families directly benefit and 2,000 do so indirectly. We get around 250 tourists a month and they are welcome. Our target is 280 but we never want more than 300. We don't want or need more people. The money we earn from the community hotel pays for the school, and computers, as well as health needs. That's all we need.We are considering opening another lodge, deeper into the forest. Life is better without oil. It makes you want more of everything. I think we must all change the way we live.EcuadorOilEnergyFossil fuelsJohn Vidalguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds Kichwaあなご、ナポ川、エクアドル、ジョンVidalWeと協議のコミュニティリーダーJiovanny Rivadenairaは、断固としてそれ以上の石油企業と仕事をしたくない

    • Forgotten spy and escape artist extraordinaire comes in from the cold
Heritage plaque for Edward Yeo-Thomas – secret agent in second world war who escaped Nazi captors in occupied FranceHis exploits as a secret agent put fictional heroes to shame. His bravery and sheer physical resilience were remarkable. He escaped from a Russian prison by strangling a guard, and was captured behind enemy lines during the second world war and repeatedly tortured by the Gestapo. He escaped again. Even when compared with other, more celebrated, members of the Special Operations Executive, who showed extraordinary courage, he stood out.Now little known, Forest Frederic Edward Yeo-Thomas – the White Rabbit, Seahorse and Shelley were among his codenames – today became the first secret agent to be commemorated by an English Heritage blue plaque. It was unveiled by his niece, Carol Green, at Queen Court, Guilford Street, Bloomsbury, London, where he lived with his wife Barbara. Present at the ceremony were Mark Seaman, historian and writer of Yeo-Thomas's biography, The Bravest of the Brave, and Squadron Leader Lee Roberts on behalf of the RAF.Lying about his age, 16-year-old Yeo-Thomas joined the US army in the first world war, then served with the Polish army in their struggle against the Soviet Union. Captured in 1920 and facing the prospect of execution, he strangled his prison guard and escaped to France. He joined the RAF at the outbreak of the second world war but was turned down for an active role as being too old. French-speaking Yeo-Thomas then joined the SOE and was dropped into occupied France to contact resistance groups and report back to London, where he persuaded Churchill that they were playing a valuable role and needed British support. • Poland and Russia: reconciled in tragedy | Jarosław Kurski
The air crash that killed Poland's leaders has led Russia to face its role in past horrors in KatynThere is no such thing as a good death. Every tragic death is senseless and aimless. But today Poles can bring some sense to this unprecedented tragedy in their country's history. For the last 70 years, the name Katyn had little resonance for most people in the west. It was also seen as a symbol of Russophobia on the part of Poles. Paradoxically, what happened on Saturday in Smolensk makes this notion obsolete.Due to last weekend's tragedy, the killing of 22,000 Polish officers by Russians in 1940 will become common knowledge. We Poles do remember that, but because they wanted to keep Russia happy, its western allies chose not to challenge Russian propaganda blaming Germans for the Katyn massacre. Now, the truth will become widely known – and truth is the very first criterion of any reconciliation.A second paradox is that the Russian reaction to the deaths – a crash that claimed the life not only of the Polish president, but of many senior government officials and the entire top brass of the military on their way to Katyn – is creating a unique situation. Authentic reconciliation between Poles and Russians, just like that of French and Germans under Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, has now become possible.Across Russia people are crying together with us today. And there are stunning, from our perspective, things happening in Russia as we speak. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin talks about Soviet crime in Katyn. He bows his head for the victims alongside the Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk. After the tragedy in Smolensk, Russia's president, Dmitry Medvedev, talks to the Polish people and declar ポーランドの指導者を殺害した航空機墜落事故は、ロシアKatynThere過去恐怖の役割に直面してつながっている良い死のようなものです
