China confiscates tainted milk products Authorities find melamine left over from 2008 scandal in six-month crackdown on dairy industryAuthorities in China say they have detained dozens of people and confiscated huge caches of dangerous milk powder in the latest bid to root out the melamine-tainted products that killed six children and sickened hundreds of thousands in 2008.Launched in July, the crackdown has shown China's dairy industry remains stubbornly contaminated. Partly to blame were incompetent product safety officials who had failed to do their jobs, the official Xinhua news agency said.Over the last six months authorities had detained 96 people for violations linked to melamine-tainted milk and confiscated more than 2,100 tonnes of tainted milk powder, Xinhua said, citing a report by the food safety commission of China's cabinet, the state council.Xinhua said the seized powder was not newly manufactured but leftover from 2008 or earlier. China ordered all contaminated dairy products burned or buried, including infant formula, yoghurt and other goods, but the government did not carry out the destruction itself. Some people have apparently saved the tainted products.In the 2008 scandal some dairy farmers, middlemen and distributors were accused of adding melamine to watered-down milk to make it appear to still be rich in protein in quality tests that measure nitrogen, which is found in both the melamine and protein. I read those pages less when I was 15 than I did Robert Christgau's rock reviews. But as I became more interested in this journalism thing, I started reading up on the scandals involving city councilmen and assembly members from 400 miles away, and about the deals hatched on this exotic sounding thing called the New York City Board of Estimate. That Voice was shaped by Jack Newfield, one of the great investigative reporters in the US of the 20th century. His supporting cast included people who were pretty formidable in their own right: Joe Conason, whose name and excellent work I'm sure you know; Bill Bastone, who went on to found the great and innovative web site thesmokinggun.com; and Wayne Barrett and Tom Robbins.Wayne and Tom have been two of New York's best investigative journalists for decades. One response to this risk is the leaker, someone who believes that key elements of political life are being wrongly kept from public view, and who circulates that material on his or her own.Because this tension between governments and leakers is so important, and because WikiLeaks so dramatically helps leakers, it isn't just a new entrant in the existing media landscape. But what is truly scandalous is that his mother had to fight to discover the circumstances of her son's death, after hearing of a sniper's involvement at a reunion for soldiers returning from Afghanistan. Facts known widely within his regiment were kept from his family.Part of the problem is a military system of reporting that, both in its mechanics and its language, is closed and opaque and allows for little cross-examination even by relatives of the deceased. It creates the opportunities for lies and evasions – occasionally intended to prevent further hurt, but most often to avoid blame. Many of the most eloquent attacks on the church, such as that from Christopher Hitchens in a recent article in Slate magazine, come from enemies who would never give it the benefit of doubt, and for the moment public opinion is with them.The Catholic church has been framed as an institution for paedophiles, and truth is no defence to that perception. Even in Britain, where all the big scandals involving children being abused or even murdered have involved state care and secular institutions, and where according to Camila Batmanghelidjh more than half a million children are brought to the attention of the social services every single year and most of these are ignored to keep the figures looking good, there's no doubt that the Catholic church is written about as a more serious threat to the children in its care.Less than half of 1% of the Catholic clergy in the UK over the last three decades or so have been accused of child abuse. That's too many, of course. Nor do such comparative statistics suggest that two wrongs make a right. A big bill that people think is going to pass is just an irresistible target for legislators: hey, that thing is going to pass, and the vote will really be about A, so if I can get a provision about B or C or D attached to it, it'll sail through cuz no one's going to vote against the whole thing just because of my little provision.Happens all the time -- and yes, in this case, on both sides. It just so happens that student loan reform has been a big priority of the Obama administration.Under it, private lenders will be out of the student loan business. All the lending will be issued and managed directly by the Department of Education. Here's what happened in a nutshell, via the New America Foundation:The roots of the 9.5 student loan case go back to the 1980s when Congress guaranteed non-profit lenders, which use tax-exempt bonds to finance their loans, a minimum rate of return of 9.5 percent on federal student loans made with these bonds. As interest rates on all other student loans fell in the 1990s, policymakers became concerned that these nonprofit student loan providers were making a killing. This is a thank you note for everyone who has done soI have been sitting quite hard on the comments in the last few posts on the Catholic scandals, and I wanted to thank everybody who played along, and to point out exactly what has been gained as a result. I could say that the comments have been much more interesting and pleasurable to read if they weren't full of expressions of disgust and accusations of complicity in paedophilia or its cover-up. That's true so far as it goes, but you might object that there are plenty of people who delight in abuse and love to breakfast off a cappucino of hot frothing outrage on a base of acid bitterness. Why should those poor souls have to go elsewhere for nourishment? Because we don't learn anything from them, that's why. The great thing that comments can supply is contact with the people who do know better than the writer does about the story, either because they are smarter, nicer, better informed, or more experienced, or have spent longer thinking about it. These aren't always the people they think they are. Like any decent journalist, I am confident that I know more about any particular story than 98% of the readers. This may sound horrendously arrogant, but that's the nature of news. The person who has it does think themselves better informed than the one who hasn't. I am also conscious that I know a lot less about any given subject than the remaining 2% of the readers. These figures are of course adjustable up and down to taste, and depending on the subject involved. If I were to write about piano music, or football, the novels of Charles Dickens, or East Enders, almost anyone interested in the subject would know a lot more than me. The issue of women priests should also get an airing. We have created the independent supreme court, and guaranteed individual liberties through the Human Rights Act. We have created an independent regulator for parliamentary standards. Next we are ending the outdated hereditary principle in the House of Lords. These are important changes of which progressives can be proud. But the cause of renewing our politics has been put back by the damage of the expenses scandal.That is why I want to launch a rallying call for a new progressive politics. To be blunt, we need to give politics back to the people. We need the people to know it's their parliament, not ours. As part of this I believe it is time to look afresh at the electoral system.
