During the second world war he made training films for the US navy. Although never a musician himself, he loved jazz and blues, and his first exposure to folk music was in the early 1940s, when he heard Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston at the leftwing Camp Unity in upstate New York.At a square dance in 1948 he met Ritchie, who came from a large Kentucky family whose members had sung for the English folk collector Cecil Sharp in 1917, and again for the American folklorist Alan Lomax. With her large repertoire of Anglo-American balladry, Ritchie was lauded by the emerging American folk scene in Greenwich Village, New York.Eager to discover the origins of her songs, Ritchie, accompanied by Pickow – they married in 1950 – spent more than a year in Britain and Ireland in 1952-53, funded by a Fulbright scholarship. But lost in that unbridled contempt is any acknowledgment of the potential of a certain Republican senator-elect from Kentucky to act as a sorely-needed boon to progressive causes. You'd hardly know it from all the handwringing, but Rand Paul – much maligned as the Tea Party's crazed kingpin – has actually opposed both the Iraq war and the Patriot Act with admirable consistency, denounced corporate welfare, questioned the premise of federal drug policy, called for meaningful cuts to defense spending, chastised his own party for supporting torture, and generally advocated a platform that is structured to impede the unwarranted exertion of government power. Once upon a time, that was the kind of thing progressives stood for. Those on the left who reflexively conflate the Paul brand of libertarianism – embodied most robustly by his father Ron – with the aims of cynical theocrats like Sarah Palin or Jim DeMint not only abdicate any pretence of intellectual responsibility; they deprive themselves of a powerful ally. There's a reason why Mitch McConnell and the rest of the Republican establishment were spooked by the idea of Rand Paul in a GOP senate primary. He'll be a thorn in their sides for years to come and, along the way, likely foster a few schisms within an otherwise absurdly uniform caucus. This must be a positive development.An anti-war Republican holding his party accountable and shaking things up in an institution mostly known for its insufferable stagnation? If the Republican challenger prevails there, it could mean a few more pick ups. It looks like the R's beat Rick Boucher in Virginia, and that's one the D's were counting on holding.In Florida, Republican Daniel Webster has clobbered Democratic incumbent Alan Grayson. Clobbered. This is one liberals need to pay attention to. Here's a guy the liberal blogosphere limned as a hero, and he got his clock cleaned.The exit polls had Reid-Angle neck-and-neck, at 47 apiece (there's a third candidate in the race, on the right). Also Illinois is reportedly neck-and-neck. In Colorado, Democrat Michael Bennet was a couple of points ahead of Ken Buck. If those flip toward the D's, it's not a bad night in the Senate at all, with loses as few as five. Joe Manchin already won in West Virginia. But five is unlikely. Seven, like I said.It's way too early to know a lot of things, but it's not too early to know one thing. Speaker Boehner. Probably the functional end of Nancy Pelosi's career.
