While none of them wants to see Yemen turn into another Somalia, the idea of a stable, prosperous Yemen is something they also find rather scary.For a start, Yemen has a large and very rapidly growing population of more than 23 million. It's also the only republic in the Arabian peninsula – all the others are monarchies – and before 1990 southern Yemen was ruled by marxists. Nominally at least, for the last 20 years it has been a democracy, with a multiparty system.
