    • Wikileaks Afghanistan files: every IED attack, with co-ordinates. Spreadsheet and visualised
From the Wikileaks Afghanistan war logs: every roadside bomb and IED attack between 2004 and 2009, with full details • Get the data• Interactive guide to these attacks• Glossary of military terms• Guardian selection of key events: the dataThe improvised explosive device (IED) is the Taliban's weapon of choice, a deadly yet effective counter to the technological superiority of their western adversaries in Afghanistan. It is the biggest single cause of deaths of British troops in Helmand and has proven impossible to completely counter. In their simplest form, IEDs are roadside bombs triggered by command wire, radio signal, mobile phone or by the victim, usually by walking or driving over the devices. Their explosive power comes from shells, diesel or fertiliser. Despite their crudeness, the IEDs are a fearsome enemy. Insurgents employ ruses to outwit electronic counter-measures (ECM) – sophisticated devices used by western soldiers to jam radio signals. Earlier this year all-plastic IEDS, which cannot be detected by traditional mine-sweepers, started to appear on the battlefield. And they are every deadlier, with some able to penetrate the most thick-skinned armoured vehicle. Extracted from the full Wikileaks database, this spreadsheet provides a unique record of attacks since 2004. It only covers roadside bombs and does not include person- or vehicle-borne suicide bombs. We have left out hoaxes (counted as IED incidents in official figures) and only include IED explosions, IED ambushes - where an explosion is combined with an ambush by insurgents - and those that have been found and cleared. This database shows the figures soared in the run-up to the 2009 presidential elections, with more than 100 attacks in three days. The speadsheets are huge - if you're looking to naviga Wikileaksは、アフガニスタン戦争からログ:詳細は各道路脇の爆弾は、2004年と2009年の間IEDの攻撃•これらの攻撃•用語軍事用語のキーイベントの•ガーディアンの選択:dataTheは爆発装置(IEDの即興に•インタラクティブガイドデータを取得する)を選択、致命的なまだ効果的なアフガニスタンでの西部の敵の技術的優位にカウンタのタリバンの武器です

    • London Blitz 1940: the first day's bomb attacks listed in full. Map and spreadsheet
London's Blitz is recorded in meticulous detail by London Fire Brigade records. See - for the first time online - how they showed September 7, 1940, the first 24 hours of attacks• Get the dataThe London Blitz started quietly. Less than 100 incidents reported by the London Fire Brigade up to 5pm on September 7, 1940. Only a few weeks after the British victory in the Battle of Britain, what came then must have been a terrible shock for Londoners. You can read the original Guardian archive report of the night here. At 5.30pm, some 348 German bombers escorted by 617 fighters pounded London until 6.00pm. Guided by the flames, a second group attacked with more incendiary bombs two hours later, lasting into the next day. The London Metropolitan Archives holds the definitive account of the Blitz in meticulously hand typed records kept by the London Fire Brigade at the time. September 7 was just the start - by November, Coventry had been destroyed and attacks hit cities across the UK, including Plymouth and Liverpool. It lasted 79 days. At the end of the war, the city's civil engineers undertook a full study of bomb damage from 1939 to 1945, identifying every property in London hit by bombs and rockets - and the severity of the attack. These London bomb maps were published a number of years ago as a book, now out of print. But you can see the maps in person at the archive, where there is talk of making them properly available online. We wanted to see how that first day and night unfolded and the Archives have allowed us to enter the records for September 7, 1940 in full detail - thanks to Alicia Weekes and Naomi Burley-Baker for their work on this. What you see here in this spreadsheet is the first time those records have been available online. If you live in London you might eve ロンドンの空襲はロンドン消防レコードによって細心の詳細に記録されます

    • UK population estimates: how many people live in each local authority? Visualised and as a spreadsheet
… and where is the UK's population decreasing? Get the latest statistics which show how many people live where• Get the dataThe UK's population is rising fast - in fact, some estimates say Britain will be the most populous country in Europe by 2050. And figures published recently by the Office for National Statistics seem to show we are on course to pass 70 million by 2029.But - no matter what the Daily Mail might say - the picture is not quite so clear-cut as all that. As these latest statistics from the ONS show, for many places in the UK, the picture is one of population decline, not rise. The ONS publishes these mid-year estimates every May/June, and they show populations for every local authority across the UK. And, as the ONS data is coded very clearly, it's possible to compare it to previous years, going back to 1991. We wanted to see what would happen if you compared the latest figures (which cover 2009) with ten years ago. That data is below. If you go to the ONS site you can also download much more data, including age breakdowns and different geographical choices. The data presents a fascinating picture of changing Britain. The key points are:• The UK's population is now 61.8m - up 393,700 on the previous year and 5% since 1999• In 38 local authorities across the UK the population is declining, not rising• The worst-hit places are those where deaths have outnumbered - or are equal to - births (the 'natural change' column of the spreadsheet is basically births minus deaths). In order the fastest-declining populations are: Inverclyde, Belfast, Burnley, Sefton and West Dunbartonshire• The population is rising fastest in inner-London boroughs such as Westminster, Camden and Tower Hamlets. • Non-EU immigration to the UK: the statistics visualised
The government is proposing to cap non-EU immigration into the UK. So, what are the facts?• Get the dataA cap on immigration to Britain from outside the European Union will be imposed from next month, with Theresa May, the home secretary, expected to announce that a maximum of 24,100 workers will be allowed into Britain from outside the EU before April. Nicholas Watt reports that May will make the announcement as she launches a consultation process to decide the level of a permanent cap to be enforced from next April.During the general election 2010 campaign, immigration from Eastern Europe became an issue - although the government (as a member of the EU) is powerless to stop European citizens coming to the UK. Non-European migration is another matter however.Which made us wonder, exactly how many people come here from outside the EU anyway? The spreadsheet below contains the key information on migration - and the Eastern European migrants. Here's what we have:Total numbers of people coming into the UK and leavingSince the year 2000. It shows that 503,000。。 People came into the UK in the year to end June 2009 - down from 530,000 on the previous year. 361,000 people left the UK in the same year. • How Canada became an open data and data journalism powerhouse
The US and the UK might get all the attention but should we be looking to Canada for innovative open data initiatives?• Apps built with Toronto's dataImagine if you took the historic records of everyone who died in the first world war. Then you matched them to one area to see how it had been affected. Or if you wanted to see if one part of your city had an epidemic of bedbugs. Or if you wanted to find out where the most guns are. This is the work of data journalist Patrick Cain, quietly and methodically producing strikingly interesting maps of his home city of Toronto. It's the pinnacle of what data journalism is supposed to be about. And, if you're looking for innovative data journalism, vast open data resources and the latest open data apps, Canada is a good place to start.Enthralled by open data initiatives around the world, Canadians from Ottowa to Vancouver are embracing spreadsheets as never before – and producing great work which you don't often hear about outside the country.Patrick Cain works by doggedly pursuing datasets, often from official sources which don't want to know – but bolstered by a powerful freedom of information system:If something is uncontroversial (like dog licences by postal code) there are often no issues about releasing it. On the other side, we have the sex offender database, which I've been trying to get access to since the spring in 2008. Sometimes there is ineffective resistance, like the landlord and tenant appeal board that tried to get me to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Mostly I get things in the mail as the law demands … Everybody (including me) likes the rage-against-the-machine stories, but in the majority of cases the system works more or less as intended.Cain is one of the most established of the new breed. • US federal deficit: who owns America's debt?
Find out which countries are propping up the US economy• Get the dataThe US Federal Deficti is always in the news - only last week, Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, said the US is pursuing a policy of weakening its currency. In the recent past, China has defended its investment in US Treasury bonds. Meanwhile, there is concern that its position as the biggest investor in US debt may become political as well as economic.Treasury bonds are how the US - and all governments for that matter - borrow money: they issue government securities, which other countries and institutions buy. So, the US national debt is owned predominantly by Asian economies. In celebration of World Statistics Day the ONS has created the UK in a spreadsheet: Get the full list here• Get the dataAs part of World Statistics Day the Office of National Statistics has provided us with data showing the UK in a spreadsheet.London, the East and Northern Ireland have all seen high increases to the regional population whereas the North West shows the lowest increase at only 1.2% as the population in Chester and Merseyside have had a decrease in numbers. It gives us an interesting snap shot of the UK. West Somerset has the highest percentage of pensioners with 34.2% of the population being pension age or over and the South West as a whole has a percentage of 22.8% Unemployment figures focus on London with Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham having the highest unemployment rates in the UK although Leicester and Birmingham follow closely with 9.9% and 9.8% respectively. But it isn't all bad news for London, they also have the highest median earnings with those living in Kensington and Chelsea bringing home an average of £933 per week and London as a whole, an average of £598. The UK has had a 3.3% population increase between 2004 – 2009 with the City of London having a 38.8% increase alone and these statistics from the ONS show some fascinating comparisons between the regions for unemployment rates, population increases, mortality rates and pension population.Have a look at your area and see where it stands in the snapshot of the UK. The ONS integrated household survey gives a unique breakdown of Britain's religious attitudes, ethnicity and health. Get the figures for your area• Get the dataIf you want to know the state of Britain, the Office for National Statistics' flagship Integrated Household Survey is a good place to start. With typical timing, the report has come out the week after the Pope's visit to the UK. But nevertheless, it's an enormous survey: some 450,000 respondents asked questions about their beliefs, sexual identity and health. Besides the findings which show that 1.5% of the population is gay, it includes lots of other details:• 71% their religion is Christianity• 4% say their religion is Muslim• 21% have no religious affiliation• Slough has the highest level of religious belief in England - 93% - whilst Brighton and Hove has the lowest at 58%• Inverclyde has the highest level of religious affiliation in Scotland at 92%• Flintshire has the highest level of religious affiliation in Wales at 81%It also provides an interesting breakdown of ethnicity and health. Are there any links between any of the datasets - between good health and religious belief, or high ethnicity and high religious belief? Here are some completely unscientific findings:• 33% of Blaenau Gwent is in poor health, the highest percentage of people in the UK. Only 67% have a religious affiliation, one of the lowest rates in the country• Slough, besides having the highest religious percentage in the country also has a very high number of people in good health - 81%Do those two figures tell us anything meaningful?Although the report is published as a PDF (of course), the ONS has given us the spreadsheet of results and you can download them below. • CAP provides another bumper payout for landowners | John Vidal
The common agricultural policy is a rotten system that makes the rich richer – and there's nothing we can to do change itForget the dodgy bankers. The people who have consistently received the most generous handouts from the public purse over the last 30 years are the big landowners. Teachers, the police and the others are preparing for savage job cuts, tax rises and an age of economic austerity, but a very few people who do nothing more than own land are being handsomely rewarded.Last month, the watchdog group Farmsubsidy.org collated the EU figures which identify where the €55bn common agricultural policy (CAP) subsidies went in 2009. No big surprises there, with five giant European sugar companies netting €500m between them, a few dairy companies making tens of millions each and the top 1,200 landowners and companies on the continent receiving more than €5bn between them.Last year, the number of farmers and food companies who received individual payments of more than €1m increased by more than 20%. In Britain we had 32 organisations and individuals each getting more than €1m.Perhaps because one in five Tory MPs is believed to receive farm subsidies, the government refused to divulge the British figures in advance of the election, and we won't have the exact names of the UK's biggest subsidy-reapers for a few weeks. But we now have the spreadsheet of the 65,000 people who received the farm subsidies, and it's not that different from other years. The biggest handout will probably not go to a full-blooded capitalist, but to the Co-op group, which manages 16 large farming estates and is now Britain's largest farmer. Up near the top of the list, though, are the Dukes of Westminster and Marlborough, the former Lord Vestey's family, the Queen, and very many hereditary landow 共通農業政策は、富めるを作る腐ったシステム - であり、何も私たちができる危険な銀行を変更itForgetを行うことです

    • Green ... and mean? | Stephen Tomkins
Research shows that buying green products makes you more likely to behave badly. What's the ethical response to that?Is your shopping trolley full of carbon-neutral fair trade vegan goodness? Well, don't expect me to be impressed anymore. The latest research says that as soon as my back's turned you'll be stealing children's lunch money and experimenting on war widows. In their tests, Canadian psychologists Nina Mazar and Chen-Bo Zhong found that people who spent money on green products were, straight afterwards, less likely to be generous and more likely to steal than those who bought non-green stuff. Apparently we feel that ethical shopping gives us licence to be selfish in other areas. What a weight this is off the minds of those of us whose ideals bob frustratingly out of reach of reality. Yes, I could buy all my clothes from Oxfam and live on vegetables grown within walking distance, but I'd only end up whipping the kids for spilling yoghurt. Better to let things find their own level. It doesn't just apply to shopping or environmentalism, of course. The idea is that we carry round a kind of ledger in our heads for ethical double-entry bookkeeping. Doing a bad deed gives us a sense of guilt we expiate by doing a good one, and vice versa.Or if accountancy metaphors don't tot up your spreadsheet, it's as if we have reserves of goodness that we use up by volunteering for the Samaritans and worrying about dolphins, and can replenish by laughing at racist jokes and using other people's milk in the office fridge. If we accept there's something in this – and it rings true for me – it offers quite a troubling challenge to the idea of religious discipline.Any way of life that calls people to be better than they are ought to be a good thing, but runs the risk – acc 研究では、購入、グリーン製品をより行儀が悪い可能性ができますを示しています

    • A year in open data: how the Open Platform has changed what we do
We're out of Beta. Today the Open Platform is finally released to the world. Now we've realised how far we still have to go.As we pushed the Open Platform out of beta this week we started looking back at what has happened over the year. In March 2009 we launched a beta service for re-using Guardian content that took the form of an open database and a new way to publish the raw data that informs our journalism. We named the initiative the Open Platform.A year later it's easy to see that we did a lot of things right but that we actually have a lot further to go.When Simon Rogers first shared what data he could offer at our first internal Hack Day, we knew this was something that had to be opened up right away. We recognised early on that the Open Platform needed to move to a more data-focused view of journalism over time, and Simon was well on his way to defining what that world looked like. So, we created the Data Store, an umbrella brand for the data products we offer which included Simon's now world famous Datablog. There has been some truly innovative datajournalism: • The BNP vote across the UK from our spreadsheets• Aid to Haiti compared by country• Full swine flu data• UK election results as a spreadsheet - the only place you can get this• The best election datasetsThe innovation of publishing raw data using Google Docs was exactly what we needed and it came with some nice surprises, such as the ability to see when other people are also looking at a spreadsheet using Google's sharing features. This live shared reading experience is amazing to witness. Then we setup a group on Flickr where people share their data visualisations, and we add some of the things people make with Guardian data in our own Applications Gallery. We have a thriving Twitter feed too. There 私たちはベータ版のだ

    • World Cup 2010: Statistics from all the football World Cup finals since 1930
The football World Cup starts in South Africa in June. Find out which team has the best track record• Get the dataHost nation South Africa is making the final preparations for the football World Cup, which kicks off there next month. You can follow the build-up and coverage of the tournament on the Guardian microsite.Spain are the current favourites, though England are close behind with odds of 6/1. But who has triumphed at past World Cups? Who has scored the most goals (or let the most goals in)? And who has been caught offside most often in recent years? We've compiled a dataset of World Cup statistics since the first tournament in 1930, taken from the FIFA World Cup archive. Only seven teams have held the trophy aloft in the 18 tournaments held since 1930 (see table below). Brazil have the most wins, with five titles, but only top the table for the most games won (all seven in 2002). Perhaps surprisingly, Hungary have scored the most goals in a single tournament (27 in 1954), while Portugal have had the most shots on target (56 in 2006, though they only scored seven).Check out the table below for basic statistics for the winning teams, or download the spreadsheet for detailed data on every competitor at every World Cup finals tournament, including ISO codes, goals for and against, corners and penalties.Download the data• DATA: Statistics from every World Cup finals tournamentWorld government data• Search the world's government with our gatewayCan you do something with this data?Flickr Please post your visualisations and mash-ups on our Flickr group or mail us at datastore@guardian.co.uk• Get the A-Z of data• More at the Datastore directory• Follow us on TwitterData summary World Cup 2010BrazilFifaKaty Stoddardguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | サッカーワールドカップが南アフリカで6月に開始されます

    • Volcanic ash: how do you spot the next volcano to disrupt flights? Every one listed
The world's airlines fly over active volcanoes every day. Now a comprehensive list from the Smithsonian gives us a guide to each one• Get the dataThe decision not to fly any aircraft across Europe since last Thursday is based on the latest guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organisation. In turn, the UK's traffic control organisation, Nats, and the Civil Aviation Authority follow the guidance to the letter. The flight which sparked this system was BA 009 - a 747 from Kuala Lumpur to Perth where all four engines stopped at 37,000 feet in 1982. An international agreement followed - and the bottom line now is that volcanic ash means no flights. The agreement set up a number of volcanic ash warning centres around the world. VAAC London (actually based at the Met Office in Exeter) covers Iceland - which is why the UK has taken the lead on this volcano.Behind the agreement sits a mountain of data - in particular a complete list of the world's volcanos from the Smithsonian Institution. ICAO used this to categorise each volcano by its type and its eruption history. The Eyjafjöll volcano in Iceland (row 1449 on the spreadsheet) is categorised here as S0 - which typically means tall plumes of ash. It's based on historic records - the last time Eyjafjöll erupted was in the 19th century. This is the full dataset - which includes geographic coordinates and the categorisations. As the map above shows - they straddle the world's main flight routes. Can you do anything with the data?Download the data• DATA: download the full datasheetWorld government data• Search the world's government data with our gatewayCan you do something with this data?Flickr Please post your visualisations and mash-ups on our Flickr group or mail us at datastore@guardian.co.uk• Get the A-Z of data• More a 世界の航空会社は活火山で、毎日飛ぶ

    • Maternal mortality: how many women die in childbirth in your country?
A new study in the Lancet shows how many women still die in childbirth around the world. See what the figures are• Get the dataJust as many women are dying in pregnancy and childbirth in the UK as they were 20 years ago, leaving Britain trailing behind countries like Albania, Poland and Slovakia as well as the wealthier nations of Europe. The stagnation of the UK, only 23rd in the global league table, contrasts strikingly with the developing world where, according to a major new and comprehensive study in the Lancet, real inroads are being made on death rates among women in childbirth.Globally, the number of deaths dropped from more than 500,000 a year in 1980 to 343,000 a year in 2008. In the last 20 years, deaths have been declining at a rate of about 1.4% a year. The figures - shown below, show the Maternal mortality ratio (MMR) - the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. The attached spreadsheet also includes ISO country codes. • Tony Blair's testimony to the Chilcot inquiry on Iraq: which words did he use? As a wordle
Tony Blair's testimony on Iraq electrified the nation. What did he say - and how often did he say it?• Get the dataIt was the TV political event of the year. Former prime minister Tony Blair appearing before the Iraq war inquiry headed by Lord Chilcot. For an entire day last week, Blair answered - or not, depending on your view - the panel's questioning. The full transcript has just been released by the inquiry, as a pdf (obviously - when will official bodies stop relying on pdfs?). And what is clear is that some themes mattered to him more than others. Thanks to the ever-wonderful Wordle.net, this is what that testimony looked like. We've extracted just the words that Tony Blair used - not the questions - so you can really get a sense of his thinking. But, just to make it easy for you, we've also got the full transcript of the hearing as a Google doc. There's a list of his top 200 words below too - see the attached spreadsheet. • Teenagers receiving drug and alcohol treatment where you live
New figures from the NHS National Treatment Agency show the number of teenagers in England being treated for drug dependency, by regionNew figures from the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA) show the number of young people in England receiving support for drug dependency, by region. A few weeks ago we published the NHS National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse's (NTA) latest statistics on the number of under-18s in England who are in treatment for drug and alcohol misuse.Today the NTA has released the 2009 figures by region, showing the number of young people receiving support for substance misuse in each area, the primary drugs and the outcome of support and treatment. The release coincides with the launch of a new Guardian microsite, in conjunction with the NTA, aimed at promoting recovery and reintegration for former drug users. According to the data, the north west had the highest number of children being treated for drug dependency over the past year - 4,916 - half of whom were over 16 and most of whom were male. The primary drug there, as in all the English regions, was cannabis, followed by alcohol. The vast majority of patients in all regions completed their treatment for drug misuse, with only a small minority dropping out or going to prison.Check out the tables below or download the spreadsheet for the full data. What do you think? • Haiti earthquake aid pledged by country: full data
Haiti's quake has apparently galvanised the world. Find out how much different countries and organisations have pledged to the aid effort• Get the dataTracking the ever-increasing pledges of financial aid and other assistance for quake-stricken Haiti is a difficult business, but the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is attempting to do just that. The OCHA has the tricky task of trying to orchestrate the efforts of the dozens of aid agencies either in Haiti or on their way there. Its list of donors tracks both monetary sums and donations in the form of assistance and equipment, both from governments and corporations. • All the major award nominees and winners for the 2009 film season
The film industry is building up to the Academy Awards, with the Golden Globes kicking off the awards season in a few weeks. Track all the key nominees and winners hereThe 2009 film awards season, which culminates with the Oscars in March, is well underway, with the Golden Globe nominations announced a few weeks ago and several awards already handed out. Here at the Datablog we're tracking nominations and winners in all the main categories, including best actor and actress, director, film and screenplay. Those categories that have been left out, like cinematographer, short film and editing, have been ignored because they aren't presented in sufficient award ceremonies to warrant a comparison. So far, Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, about bomb disposal experts in Iraq, is leading the directing and film categories, though Michael Haneke's film The White Ribbon, set in pre-world war Germany, took the honours at the European Film Awards last month.Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man) and Morgan Freeman (Invictus) lead the acting nominations, while Sandra Bullock, recently named the biggest box office draw of 2009, has received rare critical acclaim for drama The Blind Side. Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia), Carey Mulligan (An Education) and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) are also doing it for the girls.Who will make it to the Oscars and who will fall by the wayside?
