    • Politics Weekly podcast: A new politics?
According to David Cameron it's time for a New Politics, but what doesthat really mean? We ask how the new coalition will work and what the make-up of the new cabinet tells us. Jonathan Freedland thinks the Liberal Democrats have done OK on numbers, but not on big jobs. Julian Glover ventures that even though Nick Clegg has been given the job of parliamentary reform thinks it's going to be tough for him to push all that much through. We ask whether this is a new liberal moment. Jonathan says there is potential for a huge realignment of British politics while Seumas Milne thinks the Lib Dems have been drawn in to the hawkish Tory line. Finally we look at Labour, as candidates for the leadership start to emerge. Julian Glover gives his vote to John Cruddas while Seumas thinks that the party has to move from the New Labour style that has dominated the party for the last 13 years.

    • Guardian Focus podcast: The future of Polish football
Six years after writing Behind the Curtain and finding Polish football at all time low, Jonathan Wilson returns to see how preparations for the 2012 European Championships are progressing.Back in 2005, interest in the beautiful game was zero - but this wasn't always the case. Jonathan meets the leader of the Solidarity movement and the first president of post-communist Poland. Lech Walesa, who explains how football was a symbol of resistance against the ruling Communist party. After 1989, Polish football has mirrored the wild-west capitalism which dominates other walks of life. The sport has been plagued with match-fixing, the involvement of organised crime, and violence in the stands. Jonathan meets fans of Legia Warsaw, Ruch Chorzów striker Pawel Abbott, and legendary player Grzegorz Lato, now president of the Polish FA, to find out what's being done to clean up Polish football. • In the beginning of the King James Bible readathon | Robert McCrum
The appropriately grand, 120-hour public reading of the entire text is well underway in Bath. Give thanksAs I write this at my desk in London, down in Bath, at the brighly-lit lectern in St Michael's Without someone – one of about 400 volunteers – will be reading out a chapter from the King James Bible as part of a five-day non-stop marathon to celebrate the 400th anniversary of this monument of English prose. It's a fundamentally secular event, though there are moments of unexpected spirituality, and it all began when, at the end of 2011, I wrote a column challenging one of the UK literary festivals to mount an anniversary reading. If Joyce fans can do this for Ulysses and Melville-ites for Moby-Dick, why shouldn't an English literary festival organise an event to mark the 400th birthday of this seminal British text? After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, James Runcie, director of the Bath Lit Fest, stepped up and made the commitment. And here we are.The event was launched on the evening of Tuesday 1 March, when a group of actors led by Jonathan Pryce and his wife Kate Fahy, together with Bill Paterson and Tim Pigott-Smith, launched into Genesis. The vicar lit a five-day candle, and off we went. It's thrilling stuff. Whatever else you may think of him, when it comes to storytelling, the Almighty knows his stuff. In the first two hours we'd covered Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah's flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Tower of Babel and Abraham's sacrificial offering of his son Isaac.Sitting in the church (with a changing congregation of about 150 wellwishers, gawkers and thrill-seekers) the experience was rather like sitting in on a concert of language. The majestic cadences of the KJB echoed from the lectern as a rota of readers, brilliantly organised by the festival, ploughe テキスト全体の適切な壮大な、120時間の朗読もバスで進行中です

    • The Malcolm X Republicans | Michael Tomasky
The political scientist Jonathan Bernstein, writing at the New Republic site last week, made a point about the Senate and Supreme Court nominations that hadn't occurred to me and caught me in my tracks:Meanwhile, the real question here is what will happen in 2011-2012. As I said, five Republican Senators -- Collins, Graham, Lugar, Snowe, and the retiring Judd Gregg -- defected [voting for Elena Kagan]; Ben Nelson also defected [voting against], but said he would vote for cloture. The obvious question is: what would have happened if there were only 52 or 53 Democrats in the Senate, or for that matter 48 or 49. Elena Kagan appears, by all accounts, to be a mainstream Democratic nominee; she certainly wasn't on the short list of liberal advocates, although she was broadly acceptable to most of them. Can any Obama nominee be confirmed to the Supreme Court next year? The problem here is that compromise is almost impossible to imagine over the Court. Does anyone believe that Thune, DeMint, and the other Senators who may be running for president next year could accept any nominee from Barack Obama? And, after Bob Bennett and the rest of the primaries this year, does anyone believe that more than a handful of Republicans will stand up to the threat of a primary?I don't really expect a full-blown train wreck over the budget, or over any must-pass legislation next year, no matter how well the GOP does in November. But if there's a Supreme Court opening, and if the Democrats hold fewer than, say, 55 seats in the Senate, I think the odds of a real train wreck, a total stalemate, have to be well over 50/50. And, again, if the Democrats fall below 55 Senators, I'll be surprised if the Senate manages to confirm very many Appeals Court nominees. In other words, imagine, say, the cancer- 政治学者ジョナサンバーンスタイン、ニューヨーク共和国のサイトで先週の書き込み、上院と最高裁の指名について、私に発生していなかったと私のトラックで私を捕まえポイント:した一方で、本当の問題はここで何が起こるでしょう2011年から2012年

The UAE's push (refs A-C) to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) complements its political and financial commitment to encouraging renewable energy production and consumption. Although the fourth largest oil producer in the world, the UAE is expanding its commitment to environmental protection, and more importantly, positioning itself for what it sees as a post-hydrocarbon based future. The UAE has launched a major effort to promote renewables by encouraging research, development and innovation in the UAE and abroad. This includes an ambitious effort to build the first zero-carbon, zero-waste city, Masdar City. The UAE has serious resources to put into the international search for alternative energy sources, and as such, UAE interest in these issues should be seen as an opportunity for the USG. Moreover, the UAE is clearly signaling that it wants United States to support its IRENA bid, given UAE support for many of our political, security and financial priorities and the Administration's focus on environmental issues. End Summary.2. (SBU) Since the creation of IRENA in January, the UAE has actively campaigned to host the headquarters in Abu Dhabi. • Letters: BBC Hindi still offers vital service
We are astonished at the news that the BBC management has decided to stop transmission of BBC Hindi radio on short wave from 1 April (Jonathan Freedland, Comment, 9 February). For nearly seven decades BBC Hindi radio has been a credible source of unbiased and accurate information, especially in times of crisis: the 1971 war, the emergency in 1975, the communal riots after the demolition of the Ayodhya mosque in 1992.Today India is facing other serious problems: the ongoing conflicts in Kashmir, in the north-east and in vast areas in central and eastern India, where Maoist militants are fighting the state.Ten million listeners in India – most of them in rural and often very poor areas – need BBC Hindi radio and the accurate, impartial and independent news it provides.BBC Hindi transmissions are accessible in rural and remote areas and, as short-wave receivers can be battery-operated, they are available in places without electricity or during power cuts; they are an essential source of learning for schoolchildren and college students in rural India preparing for competitive exams; and they cannot be silenced in times when democracy is under threat. We strongly urge the UK government to rethink its decision to severely cut the funding for the BBC World Service to enable the continued transmissions of BBC Hindi on short-wave radio.Sir Mark Tully Broadcaster and authorGillian Wright Arundhati Roy Booker Prize winnerVikram Seth AuthorWilliam Dalrymple AuthorRam Guha HistorianKuldip Nayyar Journalist and columnistAmjad Ali Khan MusicianInder Malhotra Journalist and columnistMJ Akbar Editor, India TodaySam Miller Journalist and authorSunita Narayan Environmentalist and Editor, Down to Earth magazine, New DelhiKiran Bedi Reformist and the first woman IPS officer of IndiaTessa H 我々は、BBCの管理4月1日(ジョナサンFreedland、コメント、2月9日)から短波のBBCヒンディー語ラジオの送信を停止することを決定したというニュースに驚いている

    • The job of chief rabbi isn't worth the hassle | David Goldberg
When Jonathan Sacks retires as Anglo-Jewry's chief rabbi, the role will need redefiningIt was announced this week that Lord Sacks will be retiring as Orthodox chief rabbi – in three years' time. Why such long notice? Nowadays, all ambitious politicians and aspiring clerics (all of whom share many of the same characteristics, as Trollope's novels show) demonstrate their person-in-the-street credentials by declaring their lifelong passion for the local football team; in Jonathan Sacks' case, Arsenal. It is surprising, therefore, that he didn't remember the lesson of the Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who has said that the biggest mistake he ever made was to announce his going prematurely. Discipline wavered. Everyone relaxed and players got lippy. One told the press that he would still be there next year, the manager wouldn't. So when Fergie changed his mind, it must have given him particular pleasure to offload that player on to, erm, Arsenal. It is a risky strategy by Sacks and his United Synagogue employers. Sacks is despised by the Orthodox far-right for his lack of Talmudic expertise (a Cambridge double first doesn't carry much weight with them) and irritates his moderates with his timidity in engaging with the religious and secular two-thirds of Anglo-Jewry where his writ doesn't run. At a dinner the other evening before the retirement announcement, two popular and liberally inclined rabbis criticised his habitual wavering over whether or not to permit United Synagogue clergy to attend Limmud, the enormously successful, inter-denominational conference held annually over Christmas.Sacks may be the favourite religious spokesman of those Anglicans who prefer his neatly trimmed beard and crisp delivery to the equivocations of their endearingly hirsute Archb 三年後には - ジョナサンSacksはアングロサクソンユダヤ人のチーフラビとして引退すると、redefiningItを必要とする役割が主Sacksは正教会チーフラビとして引退することを今週発表された

    • Stars and stripes in our eyes: what's so special about the American way?
America's cultural influence is stronger than ever – as British excitement at the Oscar success of The King's Speech showsIt is hard to read a newspaper or newspaper site nowadays without being told yet more details about the downfall of America. From Wikileaks to the Obama administration's attempts to find the right approach to revolution in the Middle East, it seems that every event in this fast-moving century can be seen as yet more proof of the failure of American power. But are rumours of US decline exaggerated? A look at the cultural sphere suggests the superpower's obituarists may be getting ahead of themselves. This week saw – according to breathless promoters of Britishness – a great cultural triumph for the land of tea and biscuits. Yes, the Oscars were invaded by our directors, our actors and our royal history, courtesy of the success of The King's Speech. But wait ... Why are we so chuffed? Because we got some recognition from America! It was the popularity of the film there that made it famous, and it was the approval of Hollywood, USA that confirmed its glory. So we don't respect America any more? Phooey. We revere America, imitate America, lap up its inventions. The last time I looked, Apple was a US company. And as The King's Speech has proved, our little British culture never means more to us than when it gets a bit of acclaim in Big America. No wonder, for America becomes more culturally influential all the time. The best contemporary novelists – Philip Roth, Jonathan Franzen – are American. Lady Gaga is American. So is Eminem. The Wire and other HBO dramas are American. Coffee culture is American (disagree if you wish, but at least recognise the paradox if you are reading this in a Starbucks). In Britain, we are past masters at the hypocritical game of la アメリカの文化的な影響はこれまで以上に強い - 王の音声showsItのオスカーの成功で英国興奮はアメリカの没落についてはまだ詳細を言われなくても新聞や最近の新聞社のサイトを読むことは難しいよう

China has overtaken the US as the world's biggest consumer of energy, according to preliminary data from the IEA• Get the dataChina's energy use has more than doubled over the last decade to overtake the United States as the word's biggest user, according to preliminary data from the International Energy Agency. As the data from the IEA shows, China has gone from using 1,107 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in 2000, to 2,131 Mtoe in 2008 and is estimated to have consumed 2,265 Mtoe in 2009. The US has been the world's biggest energy user since records began. Guantánamo Bay has now been open for torture and arbitrary detention for nine years. During that time, the former government secured the return to the UK of all British nationals held there, and all but two of the former British residents, but was complicit in their ordeal. Almost a year after the expiry of President Obama's deadline to close Guantánamo, with 174 prisoners remaining there, there is still a long way to go.We welcome recent efforts by William Hague and Nick Clegg to raise the case of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in Guantánamo, with Hillary Clinton; but this must translate into his immediate return to his family in the UK. • Ivory coast: War of attrition | Editorial
There is much that can be done, short of military intervention, to make life difficult for Mr GbagboAfrica has so far stood firm in face of the crisis created in the Ivory Coast by the refusal of the incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo to stand down. No one bought the line that there were flaws in an election which the president clearly lost. Nor do they think they are part of a Franco-American conspiracy to install his rival Alassane Ouattara. Nor, with five other elections in the offing in the region, is there an appetite for the sort of power-sharing deals that defused similar crises in Kenya or Zimbabwe. The reluctance to initiate the use of force is understandable. Nigeria, the largest military power, has similar divides between north and south, Muslim and Christian. It holds the rotating presidency of Ecowas, the Economic Community of West African States, which has threatened to intervene if diplomacy fails. But the Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has little incentive to wage a war in a year when he himself faces an election.West African interventions have been successful in Sierra Leone and Liberia, but only when supported by outside forces. In this case the helping hand would be French: there are already 900 French soldiers at the airport. But as a former colonial power, their use in combat would be politically unacceptable. That leaves diplomatic pressure and the mission that Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga mounted in Abidjan yesterday. There is much that can be done, short of military intervention, to make life difficult for the Sorbonne-educated Mr Gbagbo. A travel ban has been imposed and the World Bank and the West African Central Bank have frozen his funds, which will complicate the task of paying soldiers and loyalists. 軍事介入の氏GbagboAfricaの生活が困難になると短いので、あまり行われることがあるはずですまで下がって立っている現職の大統領ローランGbagboの拒否でコートジボワールで作成した危機に直面して会社を立っていた

    • Letters: Single-state solution in the Middle East
The proposal by the Israeli right of a single state (Jonathan Freedland, 28 July) is not new. Greater Israel has always been the goal of rightwing Israelis and Zionists. This is just as unacceptable to the Palestinians, and the wider Arab world, as the present situation. The single state proposed would be much the same as it is for Palestinians in Israel today: separate roads for Palestinians and Israelis; Jewish-only towns; the best land taken by the Jewish population; and a political system that ensures a permanent majority of Jews. So no right of return for the Palestinian refugees and no rights for Gaza's citizens in this proposed single state. Palestinians in this new single state would have to be controlled in some way to maintain the demographic advantage for Jews. It may be that we have reached a point of no return where a two-state solution is now unfeasible due to the expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the annexation of East Jerusalem and the continued destruction of Palestinian homes. If that is the case, there would only be a one-state solution left; but for peace to come about between the Jews and Palestinians, only a single, secular, democratic state, with equality among all the citizens, would suffice; the Zionist ideology must go.Doug ScorgieLondon• Since the UN caused the problems by creating the state of Israel against the wishes of most inhabitants of the region, could it not solve the problem by creating a Palestinian state in the same way? • A slender win keeps World Series hope alive for Texas Rangers | Richard Adams
Texas Rangers were nervous and unconvincing winners of World Series game three against the San Francisco GiantsIt's said that Texas Rangers president Nolan Ryan doesn't like the American League's designated hitter rule. After last night's fraught 4-2 win for the Rangers over San Francisco, he might have changed his mind. With Texas playing the third game of the World Series back in their home ballpark, the difference between the two teams came when the Rangers number nine hitter Mitch Moreland – batting where the pitcher would have been hitting in a National League park – smacked Jonathan Sanchez for a two-out, three-run homer in the second inning that was enough to win the game.On the evidence of the three games so far, though, the Rangers haven't yet made a convincing case for winning the World Series. There was very little to separate the two teams on Saturday night: both scored all their runs from a brace of homers, both stranded five on base. Colby Lewis pitched a solid number for the Rangers – just as he did in beating the Yankees twice in the ALCS – while Sanchez only staggered into the fifth innings. That must be worrying the Giants.Still, the Rangers should be counting their lucky stars because some dumb managing and bullpen weakness almost caused them to blow it in the eighth innings.Lewis – who in 2009 was playing for the Hiroshima Carp, which shows how far he's come – pitched into the eighth but may have been tiring. With one out Andres Torres hit him for a solo home run, and then Freddy Sanchez was robbed by Nelson Cruz after hitting a line drive that appeared to be zipping over Cruz's shoulder until he just snagged it running backwards. Lewis then hit Aubrey Huff with a pitch. It was at this very point – two out in the eighth inning – that the Rangers bullpen テキサスレンジャーズは、サンフランシスコGiantsItのに対してワールドシリーズ3戦の緊張と説得力の勝者はテキサスレンジャーズ社長ノーランライアンは、アメリカンリーグの指名打者のルールのようにしないと言われている

    • Nigeria: It needs Goodluck
Goodluck Jonathan made a good impression on Barack Obama during a recent visit to WashingtonThere can be few better names for a head of state than the one Pa Ebele Jonathan, a canoe-maker from southern Nigeria, chose for his son, Goodluck. His final turn of good luck was to be sworn in yesterday as president of Africa's most populous state after the death of Umaru Yar'Adua. The main achievement of Yar'Adua's illness-plagued presidency was to engineer a ceasefire with the rebels in southern Delta and mass disarmament in return for an amnesty. But all those heady promises of reforming the electoral system, ending the culture of impunity and state-sponsored violence, went unfulfilled. His nickname, Baba Go-slow, referred not just to Nigeria's notorious traffic jams – it became a symbol of the reform movement itself.Jonathan assumed executive powers three months ago and in that time he has left little to chance. Acting more aggressively than many thought possible, he sacked his cabinet, the national security adviser and attorney general. Two of Yar'Adua's most stringent reformist critics, Nuru Rubadu and Nasir El-Rufai, are being tempted back from exile amid reports they could be offered top posts. As a former executive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, one of two anti-corruption instruments, Rubadu accused 31 sitting governors of corruption and arrested James Ibori, the former governor of Delta State. Ibori was cleared of the allegations, and Rubadu was dismissed and forced to flee the country. Now the tables have turned and Rubadu has been asked to return. These are positive signs and, some say, evidence of Jonathan's intent to clean up Nigeria's corruption-ridden political class. • Love the Sinner | Theatre review
Cottesloe, LondonThis new play by Drew Pautz raises a number of big issues: clerical schism, marital hypocrisy, patronising attitudes to the developing world. But while Pautz's play is entertaining and well acted, it is also muddled, substituting rhetorical gesture for real argument.Pautz's target is public and private evasiveness. He starts with a gang of wrangling Anglicans, at an African conference, failing to come up with a clear line on gay clergy. He then shows Michael, a lay volunteer, bullied by an evangelical porter, Joseph, with whom he has just had sex, into easing the latter's passage to England. We then switch to Michael's problems with his wife, who is desperate to have a baby in spite of her husband's moral and religious doubts about IVF. These issues come to a head when Joseph, inevitably, turns up in England and exposes Michael's equivocations and the riven Anglicans. The parallel between a dishonest marriage and a divided church is forced, however. The domestic issue is capable of resolution, but the public problem is a source of debate. Pautz's arguments are undermined by his portrayal of character. He attacks the Anglican church for its inability to deal with illegal asylum-seekers such as Joseph, yet Joseph is as much exploiter as victim, and the leading cleric, seemingly modelled on the Archbishop of Canterbury, strikes me as a figure of compromising common sense.Even if Pautz's case is unproven, Matthew Dunster's production has a surface liveliness. Jonathan Cullen sweats persuasively as the bisexual Michael, Fiston Barek impresses as Joseph, and there is excellent work from Ian Redford as the top churchman and Scott Handy as his smooth PR man. Refreshing as it is to find religious issues getting a theatrical airing, I wish the play had some o コッテスローは、ドリューパウツでLondonThis新しい遊び、発展途上国への態度を愛。大きな問題の数を:事務分裂、配偶者の偽善が発生します

Since 1948, Britain has supported the principle of social solidarity through state pensions, healthcare, education and other public services provided by society as whole. This idea is now under threat.Whoever wins the next general election will be targeting the welfare state and public services as a way of cutting public expenditure to pay for the mistakes of the bankers and speculators. Never was so much put at risk by so few. What they seem to forget is that good public services are important to everyone at every stage of their life from the cradle to grave. That is why we are supporting the demonstration in London on 10 April to remind all politicians that a civilised, compassionate society needs a welfare state and decent public services that pool life's risks and provide support to all who need it, irrespective of their individual ability to pay.Brendan Barber TUC, Lee Billingham Love Music Hate Racism, Christine Blower NUT, Brian Caton POA, Bob Crow RMT, Jeremy Dear NUJ, Gerry Doherty TSSA, Peter Fisher NHS Consultants' Association, Dot Gibson National Pensioners Convention, Sally Hunt UCU, Tony Kearns CWU, Chris Keates NASUWT, Paul Kenny GMB, Prof Harry Keen NHS Support Federation, Jonathan Ledger Napo, Hamish Meldrum BMA, Lesley Mercer Chartered Society of Physiotherapists, Gerry Morrissey Bectu Keith Norman Aslef, Peter Pendle ACM/AMiE, Dave Prentis Unison, Alan Ritchie Ucatt, Wendy Savage Keep Our NHS Public, Mark Serwotka PCS, Eileen Short Defend Council Housing, Derek Simpson Unite, Vanessa Stanislas Disability Alliance, Christine Steel Carers Poverty Alliance, Gordon Taylor PFA, Tony Woodley Unite, Matt Wrack FBUPublic services policyTax and spendingPublic financeGeneral election 2010LabourConservativesProtestFinancial crisisguardian.co.uk © Guardi 1948年以来、英国は国家年金、医療、教育など公共サービス、社会全体で提供される社会的連帯の原則をサポートしています

    • New Yorker's 20 under 40: a diverse and interesting line-up
Authors from countries including China and Ethiopia bring a fresh tempo to the story of life in 21st-century AmericaAnyone concerned that America is becoming an insular nation should take heart from the latest New Yorker list. Here are writers from China, Ethiopia, Russia, former Yugoslavia, all of whom are winding new immigrant stories into the narrative of American life in the early 21st century, much as the fugitives from war-torn Europe did in the 20th century.Dinaw Mengestu, whose first novel won the Guardian first book prize in 2007, speaks for a generation of young Ethiopians who have made Washington their home.Published in the UK as Children of the Revolution, the novel appeared in the US as The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears – somewhat bizarrely, given its downbeat subject matter.Mengestu's cast of braggarts and drifters look on helplessly as the yuppies move in on their deadbeat neighbourhood, gentrifying the houses while boycotting the mouldering cornershops.Yet it is not only new characters that writers such as Mengestu or another Guardian prizewinner, Yiyun Li, bring to the party, but fresh tempos and tempers. Mengestu's prose is so restrained as to seem at times almost lethargic, while Chinese-born Yiyun Li's debut story collection and the novel that followed it have a flatness of style that is not incidental to her storytelling but an essential part of it.Compare these with the neurotic realism of the one married couple to appear on the list, Jonathan Safran Foer – another Guardian prizewinner – and the undersung Nicole Krauss, both of whom write within the rich European Jewish tradition of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Philip Roth. Or with Joshua Ferris, whose first novel, Then We Came to the End, offered a pin-sharp post-modern portrait of office life.O 中国やエチオピアなどの国々から筆者らは、21世紀のAmericaAnyoneでの生活の物語は、アメリカは、最新のニューヨーカーのリストから心臓を取る必要があります島の国になっている関係者に新鮮なテンポをもたらす

58-year-old had undergone months of medical treatment in Saudi Arabia before returning home in FeburaryPresident Umaru Yar'Adua, who returned to Nigeria in February after months of medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, has died at the age of 58.A presidential spokesman told the Associated Press that Yar'Adua died at 9pm yesterday at the Aso Rock presidential villa.Yar'Adua had not been seen in public since he returned from the Middle East. He went for medical treatment at a clinic in Jeddah for pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart.Rumours swirled about his health, and his prolonged absence led to protests about the lack of clear lines of authority in a country of 150 million people.Just before Yar'Adua returned to Nigeria, parliament voted to transfer power to Goodluck Jonathan, the vice-president, until the president was fit to resume his duties. At the time, many Nigerians doubted that Yar'Adua would ever be well enough, casting a question mark over the leadership of the ruling party in the runup to next year's presidential election.Yar'Adua, who has also suffered kidney problems, left the country several times for what his advisers called medical checkups before he went to Saudi Arabia in November. He was admitted to a hospital the day after he arrived, leaving Nigeria in a political vacuum.Last month, Jonathan sacked all cabinet ministers in an attempt to stamp his authority on Africa's most populous country. He dissolved the cabinet without explanation in his first major act since assuming executive powers. • Michael Tomasky: Jobs and Congress
Well, the jobs report is bad today, just 80,000 private-sector jobs gained, and economists are all warning that this is how it's going to be for a while. You'd think, as Jonathan Cohn notes in his new blog at TNR, that there would be calls in this case for more stimulus:But most of the economists I know and trust think numbers like these are proof that we need a major new stimulus package, in order to create jobs and--oh, by the way--help everybody who's out of work. Meanwhile, conservatives--most but not all of them in the Republican Party--continue to block action even on a much smaller jobs package. But you knew that already, didn't you? Sigh.Yup. Think Progress has produced this handy chart of the 17 senators whose states have double-digit unemployment rates but who have blocked, in most cases three times, the extension of unemployment benefits. It's really indefensible, both their actions and the Beltway conventional wisdom that more stimulus is a terrible thing. Obviously, this is a terrible situation politically for Obama and the Democrats, after those glimmers of recovery in the spring seemed to suggest a narrative that now doesn't exist. But more importantly it's really bad for the people of the country. I'm really starting to believe the talk of 9% unemployment for a long time to come.US economyUS CongressMichael Tomaskyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds さて、仕事のレポートが悪い、今日だけで80,000民間ジョブが得であり、経済学者はすべての警告は、これがどのようにしばらくの間になることだです

    • Apple iPhone4: an object of rare beauty that leapfrogs the competition
Jonathan Ive has designed his masterpiece, says Stephen Fry. And there's video-calling and the crispest display everJust as the frenzy of the iPad launch subsides, it is time for anti-Apple frothers to have a new device waved in their angry faces and for pro-Apple droolers to get verbally bitch-slapped in the blogosphere for falling once more for Steve Jobs's huckstering blandishments.A year ago, iPhone 3GS was released with a new operating system and now iPhone 4 arrives with iOS 4.0, offering an array of long-awaited functions. Since that 2009 3GS launch, the Taiwanese manufacturer HTC in particular has upped its game and risen to Apple's challenge, producing handsets for the Android OS that offer slews of features, including free turn-by-turn navigation, multi-tasking, removable batteries and highly customisable interfaces. What can Apple do to wrench back the crown? The iPhone 4 is an object of rare beauty. Noticeably slimmer but a trifle heavier than predecessors, its new heft only adds to the profound feeling of quality and precision that the device exudes. Sharper edged, it is girt by a stainless steel band which cleverly houses all the antennae required by a modern smartphone. Jobs himself made a comparison between iPhone 4 and a classic Leica. With this device in my hand, I feel that I am holding its designer Jonathan Ive's personal prototype, hand-machined as a proof-of-concept model. Ive is surely one of the most influential and gifted designers Britain has ever produced and the iPhone 4 may well be his masterpiece. The phone is available unlocked in the UK.
