    • Policing protest: When the line is crossed | Editorial
It must be ensured that the boundaries – between intelligence and evidence of crime, and between evidence collection and entrapment – are rigorously upheldIn a society under the rule of law, few things matter more than upholding the proper line between legitimate and illegitimate action. Two high-profile public order cases this week exemplify the sensitivity of this truth in powerfully contrasting ways, from opposite sides of the barricades. In the first, due in Southwark crown court today, an A-level student is charged with throwing a fire extinguisher from the roof of Conservative party headquarters during the tuition fee protests. Here, the dividing line is between the citizen's right to demonstrate and the crime of violent disorder, for which Edward Woollard, who has pleaded guilty, now faces a long prison sentence. In the second case, which collapsed in Nottingham crown court yesterday, six green activists went free when revelations about the undercover role of PC Mark Kennedy destroyed the reliability of a conspiracy case against them. This time the dividing line was between the proper police role of preventing crime – an alleged attempt to shut the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station – and the improper one of potential entrapment of peaceful protesters, a possibility which raises many serious questions about public order policing today. The green campaigners' solicitor yesterday highlighted some of these: the questionable legitimacy of mass pre-emptive arrests of more than 100 people; the imposition of controversial pre-charge bail conditions on them; the allegedly arbitrary winnowing of the initial numbers arrested down to those who were finally charged, and the restrictive disclosure rules under which the defendants were not permitted to learn about PC Kennedy's role

    • Letters: Even DHL found sex hard to write about
Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water! Germaine Greer attacks DH Lawrence rightly for his worst and, I find, unreadably silly book, Lady Chatterley's Lover (Arts comment, G2, 15 November). How did she ever get through it? But to damn him completely for a single book he wrote when he was dying of consumption and crazily angry in his denial of that fact – and when he made the absurd error of trying to fight through the prudery that existed in his society by camouflaging the sexual encounters of his protagonists in loopy language – is equally silly. He wrote many better books, including Kangaroo, which to this day gives us a remarkable understanding of Australia, its landscape, people and early politics – even though Lawrence himself spent only a few weeks in that country. If Greer is really interested in understanding relationships between men and women, husbands and wives, she should perhaps try The Rainbow again.Mick WilsonBury St Edmunds, Suffolk• As a professor of English literature, Ms Greer should not make the basic mistake of confusing the author's views with those of one of his characters. Mellors is not Lawrence; nor is his treatment of Clifford merciless or contemptuous – this is just a misreading. Most serious writers are capable of making a hash of writing about sex, and Lawrence is no exception, but this should not lead to a wholesale condemnation of their work. To expect Lawrence to conform to the canons of contemporary political correctness shows a parochialism of time and opens to ridicule serious feminist criticism.Andrew MortonBirminghamDH LawrenceAustraliaFeminismguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Letters: Frail economy needs another stimulus
The Conservative party's calls for immediate cuts to the economy have been met by a growing chorus of criticism, warning that this risks sending the economy back into recession (Report, 8 March). The government was right to stimulate the economy with a variety of measures last year and so offset some of the worst effects of the recession. Yet, as some of the world's leading economists have pointed out, the fragile nature of the recovery means that fiscal stimulus is still required. However, according to the IMF, Britain is one of only two G20 countries not currently planning any such fiscal stimulus in 2010.A programme of government investment would not only stimulate the wider economy in the short term, but would increase long-term growth, thereby lowering the debt levels through a higher tax take. To this end, we encourage the chancellor to use the forthcoming budget to announce a second fiscal stimulus – especially in housing and transport, where investment has fallen most, and with a focus on developing a low-carbon economy – which would both help to secure economic recovery and create much needed jobs.Colin Burgon MPAlex Smith, Editor, LabourlistAustin Mitchell MPAnne Cryer MPAlexandra Kemp, Chief Executive, West Norfolk Women and Carers' Pensions Network (personal capacity)Bellavia Ribeiro-Addy, NUS National OfficerBilly Hayes, General Secretary, CWUByron Taylor, National Trade Union Liaison Officer, Trade Union & Labour Party Liaison Organisation (TULO)Cat Smith, Vice Chair, London Young LabourChris Edwards, Senior Research Fellow, UEA,Chris McCafferty MPChris McLaughlin, Editor, TribuneChristopher Cramer, Professor of Political Economy of Development, SOASClifford Singer, Director, The Other TaxPayers' AllianceColin Challen MPCompass Youth ExecutiveDave Anderson

    • Pitching nightmare spells doom for the Texas Rangers | Richard Adams
The Texas Rangers have ruined their World Series hopes against the San Francisco Giants after a disaster in game twoIt was pitching that won the second game of the World Series for the San Francisco Giants – but not their own. Instead it was an hilariously inept performance by the Texas Rangers bullpen in the eighth inning, almost unbelievably bad at this level, that cost the Rangers the game and, more importantly, their dignity. The Rangers' psyche may have been fragile enough after Cliff Lee – hailed as the lovechild of Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson (an interesting ethnic mix) by the US media – was beaten up in game one. But game two's eighth inning was a nightmare that the Rangers may never recover from.Leading 2-0, the Giants had two out and no-one on when Buster Posey reached out to poke a flare over second base for a single. Ron Washington promptly brought on Derek Holland – so deadly against the Yankees in the ACLS – only to see him throw 11 balls in a row.Bizarrely, the Rangers' managers failed to warm up another pitcher until far too late, as Holland loaded the bases and walked home a run in 13 pitches. At last Holland was yanked and Mark Lowe took the mound, only to walk Juan Uribe for another run and give up a hit to Edgar Renteria for two more.Lowe then departed and Michael Kirkman came in, hanging a pitch over the plate that Aaron Rowand smacked for a triple, bringing in two more runs. Then Andres Torres batted Rowand in with a double. At this point Nolan Ryan could have brought himself on for all the difference it would have made. As it was the Rangers in desperation had Tommy Hunter, down to be the game four starter, throwing in the bullpen when Kirkman finally got the third out of the inning – 30 minutes, 28 balls, four walks, four hits and seven runs after

This is how they did it:The data is derived from tweets sent via a mobile device that includes the location at the time of sending the message. The contours correspond to the density of tweets, the mountains rise over active locations and cliffs drop down in to calm valleys, flowing out to tweet deserts. • Guardian Daily podcast: Darling on debt; plus disparities in NHS death rates
Alistair Darling speaks exclusively to Michael White after the release of growth and debt figures from the new Office for Budget Responsibility. Britain's annual borrowing will be more than £20bn lower than predicted, but growth forecasts have also been slashed. • Scratching the surface of America | Sasha Abramsky
Hiking in the Grand Canyon, you can leave the political realities of the US behind – and they're easier to navigate on your returnFrom Plateau Point, seven miles hard walk from the top of the Grand Canyon, there's a sheer drop, thousands of feet, to the muddy brown Colorado River below. Craggy cliffs on the other side of the river soar upwards, in layers, like a demonic wedding cake, a hallucination, a dream. Behind Plateau Point, the path snakes back through a flatlands of prickly-pear cactus, into the Indian Gardens oasis, and then up, in switchbacks, the ascending cliffs, the path getting ever-steeper, in early April ever-more snow-covered, as it rises. High, high above, invisible from Plateau Point, the fierce path ends and the cacophony of Grand Canyon Village begins.Only 5% of visitors, according to park rangers, venture anywhere down the canyon trails; iconic paths like Bright Angel and Kaibab. A far smaller percentage go down to Plateau Point, or, beyond that, to the river itself, its frigid waters fed by snow melt.At the top of the canyon, it's all noise and chaos; bus-loads of tourists pulling up to the rim just long enough to snap a few photos and move on. It's easy to get contemptuous of the tourism culture up at the Village. It's overly commercial, everything's handed to visitors on a plate, it's superficial and so on and so forth. There are an awful lot of people at the top who seem to view the majesty of nature as something to be absorbed at speed, in between visits to snack stands and trinket stalls, for subsequent conversion into a screen saver. They are, I snootily imagine, doing their utmost to make John Muir, founder of modern American naturalism, and Teddy Roosevelt, the president who kick-started America's National Park system, turn in their graves

    • Timothy Radcliffe on the crisis | Andrew Brown
More Catholic thoughts on the abuse crisis, from the admirable Dominican Timothy RadcliffeAlso this morning, Timothy Radcliffe writes in the Tablet on why he is still a Catholic. He is one of the most personally impressive Christians I have ever known; I don't like to write about that sort of thing partly because of an old joke which says that the superego is that part of the personality dissolved by alcohol. Well, goodness is that part of the personality which dissolved in journalism and any attempt to describe or testify to it results in absurdity or worse – cf Malcolm Muggeridge. However, I listen carefully to anything Timothy Radcliffe has to say, and his defence of the Vatican is interesting as well as well-informed: It is generally imagined that the Vatican is a vast and efficient organisation. In fact it is tiny. The CDF only employs 45 people, dealing with doctrinal and disciplinary issues for a Church which has 1.3 billion members, 17 per cent of the world's population, and some 400,000 priests. When I dealt with the CDF as Master of the Dominican Order, it was obvious that they were struggling to cope. Documents slipped through the cracks. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger lamented to me that the staff was simply too small for the job.People are furious with the Vatican's failure to open up its files and offer a clear explanation of what happened. Why is it so secretive? Angry and hurt Catholics feel a right to transparent government. I agree. But we must, in justice, understand why the Vatican is so self-protective. There were more martyrs in the twentieth century than in all the previous centuries combined. Bishops and priests, Religious and laity were assassinated in Western Europe, in Soviet countries, in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Many Catholics still s

    • A game of threes | Andrew Brown
We all believe in being rational and open-minded. We all think we might be wrong. So here is a small and simple challengeThis may be the shortest thread ever. I was prompted by an exchange in comments to wonder whether it was really true, as A. N. Whitehead claimed, that everyone thinks their own beliefs are the summit of western philosophy. So the challenge is a simple one. Name three people, preferably contemporaries, whom you honestly believe are smarter, better educated, and more honest than you are, but who disagree with you about God. So atheists must name believers, and vice versa. It would be nice if these people were well-known enough for their names to mean something, but I don't think that's essential, and, let's face it,most of us don't know anyone well-known personally, and journalists only know them professionally. In a spirit of fair-mindedness, I will kick off with three of each. Among Christians, Margaret Spufford, John Bowker, Timothy Radcliffe; among atheists, John Sulston, Richard Lewontin, Pascal Boyer.ReligionAndrew Brownguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Emma Watson is named Hollywood's highest paid female actor
Harry Potter actor Emma Watson reportedly earned £20m in 2009, putting her in 14th place in Vanity Fair rich listThere was little doubt that Emma Watson had come a long way since playing the bespectacled swot Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first blockbuster hit featuring the boy wizard. But just how far she has progressed in financial terms was revealed today when the 19-year-old was named Hollywood's highest paid female actor.Towering above more seasoned performers such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie, the star raked in £20m last year in Vanity Fair's list of Hollywood's top 40 earners. She came 14th in the overall list, and alongside Cameron Diaz was one of only two women in the top 20. She reportedly earned £10m for the final two instalments of the Potter films, The Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2. Co-star Rupert Grint came just behind her in 15th position.A regular sight on the front rows of fashion shows in London and Paris, Watson last year won a lucrative advertising deal with Burberry and this year launched a clothing collection in collaboration with the ethical label People Tree.Meanwhile Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry in the films, made £26m, putting him sixth in the table, and bestowing upon him the honour of being the highest paid actor on Vanity Fair's list, the top five positions all taken by directors. His earnings are also likely to be higher than estimated, as other sources of income, such as a promotional deal with Orlando's new Hogwarts theme park, were not counted. The title of top earner went to Michael Bay, the maker of the latest Transformers film, Revenge of the Fallen, with an income thought to exceed £78m, while Steven Spielberg was in second place with more than £53m estimated earnings. It's been a g

    • Chile's earthquake: the view from Santiago | Margaret Snook
While Chile's earthquake was strong, this is no Haiti. But some new buildings cannot have respected anti-seismic regulationsWhen the earthquake hit Chile, my husband and I were at the coast, in Concón (this is the final weekend of summer). We were in an apartment on the eighth floor of a building on a cliff overlooking the sea – all very nice, but man, does that shake, rattle and roll unnerve you at 3:35am.The thing about seismic activity is that you never know when it will start – nor when it will stop – so you don't know if you should just roll over and go back to sleep or get the hell outta Dodge ... we got out. This one seemed to last an eternity – they say it was a full minute, which by seismic terms is pretty much an eternity.Fortunately there was a full moon, so we could see a where we were going. Everyone from the building went downstairs into the parking lot. We could get some radio signals in our cars, but had no cell phone signal for several hours. Although Twitter worked for the first five or 10 minutes, so I was able to find out about people from several areas around the country, and my daughter could deduce that we were ok, we lost the signal very quickly. It made for a long night. (My daughter only signed up to Twitter this morning because she knew that I would send a tweet – and that was the only way she could get info on me.)There have since been aftershocks and more aftershocks (the seismologists say to expect them for the next couple weeks – again, you never know how hard or long they will be). So you start to get skittish ... We decided to come home to Santiago this morning. Ironically, Santiago was harder hit (8.5, while the central coast was 7), but here we have lights, gas, internet, etc. In Concón we were still without basic services until about

    • Peter Fraenkel obituary
Award-winning civil engineer responsible for worldwide projectsPeter Fraenkel, who has died aged 94, was a civil engineer at the heart of a movement of British consulting engineers responsible for infrastructure all over the rapidly developing post-colonial world of the 1970s and 80s. He built up a 160-strong practice that produced innovative, heavy engineering solutions to such problems as how to support the world's then longest cable-stayed bridge in Thailand and how to build the biggest road projects at that time through the challenging topography of Hong Kong.In the UK, he quickly made a name for himself by carrying out research that led to the regeneration of Britain's stricken canal network. Fraenkel was asked to put together teams to walk along some of the country's 3,100km of canals to research the feasibility of bringing them back into commercial use. Many had fallen into dereliction and only through the efforts of enthusiasts had the occasional pumping house or lock been restored. The Fraenkel report (1975) argued persuasively that there was a case for restoring much of the network, aided by central government funding. This report, for the Department of the Environment, was a catalyst for some early projects, such as the restoration of 39 locks on the Kennet and Avon canal and the restoration of the Avoncliff aqueduct, which Peter Fraenkel and Partners (PFP) carried out. By the turn of the millennium, he was able to look back with pride at his role in the UK-wide regeneration of the 18th- and 19th-century waterways.Fraenkel was born in Breslau, Germany, now Wroclaw in Poland. His German parents – his father was Jewish, though Peter was brought up as a Lutheran – horrified at the rise of nazism, sent Peter to London aged 16.
