    • Ivory Coast's illegitimate president must go | Patrick Achi
Laurent Gbagbo has been voted out. Events in Egypt and Tunisia must show his African supporters the world has changedThere are few who would not argue that when the clear will of the people has been expressed at the ballot box and an incumbent president has been defeated, it is time for him to make way.On 28 November last year, Laurent Gbagbo, until that point the president of Ivory Coast, was decisively defeated in the second round of the presidential election. The result, announced by the independent electoral commission and verified by the international community and its observers, had Gbagbo trailing by nearly 10 percentage points.Since that time Gbagbo has refused to stand down and allow our new, democratically elected administration to take charge. Control of the army and the national broadcaster has enabled him to cling to power, and more than 400 civilians have been killed in street crackdowns as they demonstrated in support of their democratic rights. Gbagbo's militias have encircled the hotel where President Alassane Ouattara's new administration is being protected by UN forces. Gbagbo has used public funds to buy the support of American political lobbyists to try to build support across the world for his untenable position. And he has threatened to restart civil war and plunge Ivory Coast back into the years of conflict the recent election result resolutely rejected.Yet there are splinters in the African response to Gbagbo. A small number of African leaders have continued to publicly support him, and some even fund him, in total disregard for the democratic will of the Ivorian people. To those leaders who continue to assist in denying Ivorians what they have clearly expressed, this must be said: in the months since the election the world has changed, dramatic

Ronald Reagan ran for office promising, among other things, to shut down the Energy and Education Departments.  When I worked in the Clinton Administration, I often found myself wishing he'd succeeded.  Energy Department officials, all the way up to the very enthusiastic Secretary Bill Richardson, seemed from my perspective to be nothing more than lobbyists for industry.  Back then, it was usually oil and gas.  Now, they're enthusiastic promoters of ill-fated subsidies for green technology.

    • How The Wealthy Plan to Finance The American Aristocracy With Middle Class Dollars
The quest for influence, power and control at all levels of government has long played out through large political contributions and the big bucks paid to lobbyists to accomplish special interest objectives. And while the game has often been ‘rigged’ to benefit the wealthy in our society, there was always a role to be played by the nation’s unions, thanks, in no small part, to their substantial treasuries filled by the dues paying membership.

    • Obama and the Populists
Greg Sargent writes: This has to be the clearest sign yet that Obama has taken a very sharp populist turn as he seeks to frame the contrast between the parties heading into 2012. During his remarks this morning, Obama directly responded to Republicans accusing him of “class warfare,” but rather than simply deny the charge, he made the critical point that the act of protecting tax cuts for the rich is itself class warfare, in effect positioning himself as the defender of the middle class against GOP class warriors on behalf of the wealthy. He excerpts this apparently ad-libbed section of the speech: Warren Buffett’s secretary shouldn’t pay a higher tax rate than Warren Buffett. There’s no justification for it. It is wrong that in the United States of America, a teacher or a nurse or a construction worker who earns $50,000 should pay higher tax rates than somebody pulling in $50 million... We’re already hearing the usual defenders of these kinds of loopholes saying, “this is just class warfare.” I reject the idea that asking a hedge fund manager to pay the same tax rate as a plumber or a teacher is class warfare. I think it’s just the right thing to do. I believe the American middle class, who’ve been pressured relentlesly for decades, believe it’s time that they were fought for as hard as the lobbyists and some lawmakers have fought to protect special treatment for billionaires and big corporations. Nobody wants to punish success in America ... All I’m saying is, that those who have done well, including me, should pay our fair share in taxes to contribute to the nation that made our success possible. I think it's important to note that Obama's plan actually keeps taxes quite a bit lower than the do-nothing plan, which would allow the Bush tax cuts to

    • The Mafia, as seen on HBO | Joe Queenan
Just when the mob seemed a figment of TV writers' imagination, an FBI sweep recalls a bygone era of blue-collar crimeWhen the feds carted away more than 100 mobsters on Thursday, many Americans reacted with disbelief, shocked to learn that the traditional Mafia was still running that sizable an operation. After all, most of the attention directed at shake-down artists in recent years has focused on Washington lobbyists, or Hamid Karzai's relatives, or the thugs who run Wall Street. And ever since Dandy Don John Gotti got put away for life, the mob has tried to keep a much lower profile. The mythical era of Vito and Michael Corleone, the golden age of Murder Inc, seem so far in the past that it is hard for some people to wrap their heads around the idea that organised crime still exists. Perhaps, as one pundit has suggested, the public became so transfixed by the Sopranos in the last decade that it stopped believing that real-life gangsters walk among us. This is like watching the contestants on American Idol and forgetting that people who can actually sing still exist. Well, they do. A couple of them are on the judges' panel. The sight of so many alleged hoodlums being hauled off to the slammer is not so much surprising, as anachronistic. It evokes powerful images from a bygone era, such as the famous 1957 FBI raid on a huge mob confab in upstate New York. Much as I hate to admit it, one would have a heart of stone to be able to gaze at these new images and not feel a certain quivering nostalgia for old-time gangsters, mainstream gangsters – the kinds of old-school gangsters who built organised crime from the ground up.Unlike east European gang rings, who hack into bank accounts and steal credit card passwords by the truckload and hijack people's identities, but who have

    • Operation Barbour-ossa | Michael Tomasky
I spent most of the day trying to avoid reading Politico's big Haley Barbour puff piece, but I finally succumbed, as I knew I would. He's the most powerful man in GOP politics, they say, because he runs the Republican Governors' Association and has lots of money to dole out to candidates. And then:Barbour's clout is also derived from his serious interest in running for president in 2012, a point he is making clear in private conversations. His logic, one adviser told POLITICO, is simple: When he surveys what most Republicans consider to be a weak field, he sees no reason he couldn't easily beat them. He's a better strategist and fundraiser than any other candidate currently considering running — and just as good on television and in debates, his thinking goes. There's actually something to this. Culturally, he is about as perfect a Republican delivery box as exists. Southern with a deep south accent. For our British friends, we should explain that neither Clinton nor Dubya had a real southern accent. They were from the southwest, and the accents are a bit softer over there. But Barbour is as southern-fried as they come. And deeply reactionary, and an old tobacco lobbyist, and porcine, and governor of a state that's 49th or 50th in everything and perfectly happy about that, and just the kind of guy you can picture being most at home hanging around in a corporate hospitality tent at Augusta National during Masters week.I think he has a real chance of becoming the GOP nominee. The corporate conservatives will love the guy, and on the Kulturkampf front, which is really where the GOP's collective heart beats these days, there's no one who makes such a stark contrast with the incumbent. He may be a harder sell in Iowa than someone like Tim Pawlenty, but if the contest drags out 私はThe Politicoの大きなヘイリーバーバーパフの部分を読んで回避しようとして一日の大半を費やして、私は最終的に死亡、私は知っていたとして

    • Obama's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, to quit
Gibbs will stay in president's inner circle to prepare for 2012 electionRobert Gibbs, the White House press secretary and one of President Barack Obama's closest confidantes, is to quit his post but will continue to give advice as an outside consultant. His departure – scheduled for next month, two years after taking the job – has been rumoured for months.Gibbs is liked by many White House press correspondents who fell under the spell of his old-school courtesy, but others found him abrasive. As press secretary he shared responsibility for the Obama administration's failure to sell its political achievements, one of the biggest criticisms made of it.Gibbs is not seeking to become a lobbyist or take on any similar outside work. He will continue to be part of the inner Obama circle, although he will no longer be in the White House, in a similar way to David Plouffe, who masterminded Obama's campaign strategy but did not take a post after the election.Gibbs will help prepare for the 2012 election campaign and make television appearances in support of White House policy. His successor as press secretary has not yet been announced. The move is part of a widespread reshuffle by Obama to freshen up his team for the remaining two years of this presidential term.Gibbs joined Obama's team early, in 2004, and is one of about half a dozen people he came to rely on and who shared the long hours on the campaign road.Gibbs, 39, had previously been press secretary for various Democrats. He worked for John Kerry during his 2004 presidential bid but left in protest at the sacking of a colleague.Along with the political strategist David Axelrod, he was the public face of the Obama presidential campaign in 2007 and 2008. • Big Ben Nelson tolls for Wall Street | Richard Adams
The Republicans and Democrat Ben Nelson unite to filibuster Wall Street regulation reform bill in the SenateJust as he did at crucial times during the healthcare reform bill passage, Nebraska's Ben Nelson again split with the rest of the Democratic party and voted with the Republicans to hold up the financial regulation reform legislation. The Democrats plan to bring fresh votes to end debate – and thus over-riding the filibuster – tomorrow and Wednesday if needed, and remain confident that they can win the additional Republican vote required to get over the 60 vote hurdle to do so.Nelson's grand-standing may be a temporary gesture but it could give the Republicans valuable political cover, since it allows them to deny the charge that only Republican obstructionism is holding the bill back. The suspicion is that Nelson has been swayed by Nebraska's most famous financier, Warren Buffett, who has been lobbying hard for an exemption on existing derivatives contracts from the new bill.In response to the vote, President Obama was quick to attack the Republicans in strong language:I am deeply disappointed that Senate Republicans voted in a block against allowing a public debate on Wall Street reform to begin. Some of these Senators may believe that this obstruction is a good political strategy, and others may see delay as an opportunity to take this debate behind closed doors, where financial industry lobbyists can water down reform or kill it altogether. But the American people can't afford that … I urge the Senate to get back to work and put the interests of the country ahead of party.US CongressDemocratsRegulatorsRepublicansObama administrationFinancial crisisUS economyUS politicsRichard Adamsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is s Nelson。。

    • German arms lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber jailed for eight years
Lobbyist at centre of 1990s slush fund scandal found guilty of tax evasion after 10-year extradition battleKarlheinz Schreiber, a major player in a slush fund affair that plunged Germany's Christian Democrats into chaos in the 1990s and paved the way to power for the current chancellor, Angela Merkel, was convicted today of tax evasion and sentenced to eight years in prison. The 76-year-old former arms industry lobbyist was found guilty in Augsburg state court of failing to report some 14.6m Deutsche marks (equivalent to about €7.5m) in income.Prosecutors had asked for nine and a half years in prison, while Schreiber's defence lawyers had argued for his acquittal. It was not immediately clear if either side would appeal.Schreiber was accused of taking undeclared commissions from a deal in the early 1990s to deliver Fuchs armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia.Schreiber, who has German and Canadian citizenship, was arrested in Canada in 1999 under a German warrant. He was sent to Germany in August for trial after losing a 10-year battle against extradition. He also allegedly gave a cash donation in 1991 to the former treasurer of then chancellor Helmut Kohl's Christian Democratic Union party, Walther Leisler Kiep. That allegation triggered a scandal that only deepened with Kohl's 1999 admission that he had personally accepted off-the-books – and therefore illegal – donations from supporters. The party financing scandal tainted the reputation of Kohl, who was chancellor from 1982 to 1998, and led to a criminal investigation. However, prosecutors in Bonn closed the case in 2001 without charging Kohl after he agreed to pay approximately 300,000 Deutsche marks in fines.Schreiber was indicted initially on charges of tax evasion, bribery and of being an accessory to breach of trust an
