Exhibition of German painter's work at the Carré d'Art, Nimes, FranceThe exhibition of paintings by Albert Oehlen at Paris City Council's Musée d'Art Moderne in 2009 made me wonder about the merits of such vast compositions. Seeing the show at the Carré d'Art in 。îmes (until 9 October) confirms the fact that Oehlen, 57, is of only limited importance. With about 30 canvases he reveals his system with absolute, but unfortunately appalling, clarity.He has chosen as his cardinal principles uncertainty and eclecticism. It being possible to use brushes, the tips of one's fingers but also computer-assisted printing, the German artist uses all these techniques. As abstraction may be a matter of gesture or geometry, he superimposes and combines the two. Painting itself being figurative or abstract he covers an image – for example a film poster – with various smudges and stains. Alternatively he lets a pictorial form trigger the representation of something else, but without going too far in that direction. Colours may be intense, subdued or even fade to grey, so he indulges in all three. In this way collectors may choose, depending on their whim or the space they wish to decorate, a lively or more gloomy Oehlen. But in all circumstances it will be large.The 。îmes exhibition soon turns into a demonstration of the various available styles, as if the only way of making art nowadays was to shift from one process to the next, much as one turns the pages of a history book, as if painting could no longer have any other subject but itself. Should the job again go to a European, the name of Christine Lagarde, the French finance minister will be floated, but of the 10 IMF bosses, four have already been French. Nobody from Italy or Britain has held the job, so Mario Draghi, governor of Italy's central bank, would be an strong bet unless he becomes the next president of the European Central Bank. As a Labour candidate I lost count of the number of times I heard when out canvassing that we had failed to get a grip on immigration – including from many ethnic minority voters. It is also a view reinforced by the fact that every time a Labour MP brings up these difficult issues, such as Margaret Hodge and housing allocation in 2007, or Jack Straw and sexual grooming earlier this year, they are always ostracised by liberal commentators.A key factor in making Labour electable again will be to come up with policies on immigration that reflect the economic insecurity that many communities now feel, regardless of race. No further details were immediately available.The artwork, which goes by two titles: Poppy Flowers or Vase with Flowers, was stolen earlier on Saturday from Cairo's Mahmoud Khalil Museum.It was the second time the painting had been stolen from the Cairo museum. Thieves made off with the canvas in 1978, but authorities recovered it two years later at an undisclosed location in Kuwait.Authorities have never fully revealed the details of the first theft. When it was recovered, Egypt's then interior minister said three Egyptians involved in the heist had been arrested, and had informed police where the canvas was hidden. Authorities never reported whether the thieves were charged or tried.The painting resembles a flower scene painted by the French artist Adolphe Monticelli, whose work deeply affected the young van Gogh. My friend Phil Kelly, who has died aged 59, was an extraordinary and gifted painter. His vibrant canvases have captured the imagination of collectors and supporters worldwide, including the poet Seamus Heaney, for whose wife, Marie, he completed a set of book illustrations, and the chef Rick Stein, for whose Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, Phil created a mural. Although raised in Ireland and England, he had lived in Mexico City since 1989 and became a Mexican citizen in 1999.Born in Dublin, Phil was educated at Rugby school, Warwickshire. He was expelled, and later attended college in Bath, where his artistic talent was immediately recognised. He moved to London, to Whitby, in north Yorkshire, and then to Portugal, subsidising his painting with a variety of occupations.His desire for light and colour took him in 1983 to Mexico City. He arrived with £50 in his pocket and no Spanish. He was on a visit to England in 1985 when an earthquake struck Mexico City, taking close friends and all of his Mexican work. He returned to work and exhibiting in London, but left for Mexico again in 1989, marrying Ruth Munguia, a cultural administrator, the following year. They had two daughters, Ana Elena and Maria José.His career was flourishing and he took up painting full time. Ruth was a major influence in this, organising exhibitions and promoting his work. After the art collector Patrick J Murphy happened upon his exhibition Babel Descifrada (Babel Deciphered), at Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art in 1996, shows followed in Dublin.Wherever Phil lived, there were always the same ingredients that reflected the man: drawings and colour trials taped to walls, good literature, blues or jazz music, wine, excellent food and paint.
