Artist of the week 123: Sheela Gowda Indian artist who uses incense, cow dung and human hair to shed light on the lives of ordinary workersWhile the hi-tech boom is transforming many of India's major cities, some industries haven't changed in what seems like aeons. One such is the business of making incense: India supplies more than half of the world's incense sticks, as many as 60 billion a year, but it remains a cottage industry whose female labour force earns a pittance. Bangalore artist Sheela Gowda makes her own, creating what look like aerial views of blighted rural landscapes or post-apocalyptic lily ponds with intensely scented ash. Like the women who manufacture joss sticks in their homes, this work is fragile: one wrong move and it could all blow away.As well as using incense, Gowda has turned old bits of house timber into battered versions of abstract sculpture and fashioned ropes of human hair into looping drawings. Cow dung, thread, spice and oil drums have all been transfigured in her installations, subtly bringing to light the workaday lives of those living on the economic margins.Gowda, who trained at London's Royal College of Art in the 1980s, started out as a painter, but changed the direction of her work in the early 1990s. In response to cultural upheavals that included the rise of the Hindu right wing, the Mumbai riots and India's uneven economic development, she began making sculptures and installations that engaged directly with the India around her.Snaking its way through the gallery space, And Tell Him of My Pain (1998) is a vein-like installation: a dark mass of thread, stained with blood-coloured kumkum arranged in elegant visceral tangles that end in a barbed posy of needles. You can't tell by looking, but to make this work the artist had to pull a 360-foot long thread throug

Drug company's loss could be Africa's gain A decision by an Indian patent office to reject an application by one of the world's major drug companies could help save lives in Africa, by enabling the manufacture of cheap versions of a key Aids drugA very important patent decision may have just been made in Mumbai. Abbott Laboratories, one of the world's biggest research-based drug companies, doesn't like it - they are now considering what to do. But HIV/Aids campaigners are celebrating. The Mumbai patent office has rejected Abbott's application for a patent in India on its drug Kaletra - a combination of the two antiretroviral medicines lopinavir and ritonavir.Kaletra, say campaigners and doctors involved in the struggle against HIV/Aids in Africa, is crucial. Yes, there are antiretroviral drugs now in sub-Saharan Africa, where the Aids epidemic is at its worst. Five million people are now alive because they are taking them, although ten million more are in need. But a further, tougher problem looms as the virus does what viruses do. When HIV becomes resistant to the cheap first-line drugs being rolled out, the cost of treating Africans will soar unless generic versions of the newer medicines that we use in Europe and the USA can be sourced.Kaletra is one of those. When the basic drug cocktail stops working, doctors will want to put patients on Kaletra - or even better, its newer version Alluvia, which is able to withstand African temperatures without refrigeration.Cheap versions of the drug have been made by Indian generics companies and are ready to be shipped. The Clinton Health Access Initiative had negotiated a price for Africa which amounts ot $440 per patient per year - that's a lot in Africa, but a fraction of the price that antiretrovirals sell for in the rich world, which was $10,000 per patient per year

David Cameron seeks to impress India with his massive delegation | Nicholas Watt The British PM will arrive in India today with the largest UK delegation since the sun came down on the Raj in August 1947Not since the days of the Raj, which came to end 63 years ago next month, have so many Brits traipsed to India on an official visit.David Cameron will tonight fly into India with the largest British delegation since the sun came down on the Raj in August 1947.Previous prime ministers, notably Tony Blair, have led large delegations to India before. But Cameron has gone one stage better by taking captains of industry plus six cabinet ministers. There are the obvious big names like John Varley of Barclays and Richard Olver, chairman of BAE. On the ministerial side George Osborne will be heading to India's commercial capital Mumbai. William Hague will accompany Cameron. There are also some intriguing names. Pat Hewitt, the former Labour trade and industry secretary, is also flying on the prime minister's chartered plane. She is a member of the UK India Business Council.Lord Patten of Barnes, the former Hong Kong governor who is currently helping sort out the mess of the Pope's forthcoming state visit to Britain, is travelling too. He is chair of the UK-India Roundtable.Three Olympic gold medallists will add a touch of glamour. They are Lord Coe, Dame Kelly Holmes and Sir Steve Redgrave. Why all the bigwigs? The prime minister wants to open a new chapter in Britain's relations with its largest former colony. But the presence shows how the world has moved on since Brits used to pass through Mumbai's gateway to India in the days of the Raj. It is now India's former rulers who are pleading to be taken seriously by one of the world's fastest growing economies. David

Shrinivas Havanur My friend Shrinivas Havanur, who has died aged 82, was an authority on the Kannada language, his much-loved mother tongue which is spoken nowadays by some 35 million people in the state of Karnataka, southern India. He was born into a Brahmin family in the village of Havanur. He went on to become librarian of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai before leaving this prestigious post to become professor of Kannada, first at Mumbai University, then at Mangalore University. His research brought him into contact with the Basel Mission, a Protestant society with roots in Switzerland and south-western Germany, whose staff, in the 19th century, had researched the Kannada language and its literature. They had played an important part in transforming it into a language for modern discourse and media.I was archivist of the Basel Mission when Havanur came to me wanting, for his first short stay in Basel, the same kind of 24/7 access he had provided for scholars when he was a research librarian. We came to an understanding that allowed him to work night and day, as he wanted.Since that first visit, we had been firm friends and colleagues. I had no background in Indian studies, and he opened up a whole new world for me, not least in my understanding of the significance of this group of missionaries in the history of Karnataka.Havanur became almost an ambassador-at-large for the Basel Mission in Karnataka, with his pointed, critical but positive judgments about the missionaries' linguistic work in academic publications and the press. In retirement he became an honorary resident member of Karnataka Theological College. Assisted by the college archivist, he produced the definitive computer catalogue of the many Basel Mission publications in his language. Indo-Pakistani talks require caution | Anita Inder-Singh The resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan is welcome, but expectations of its outcome should be kept lowDoes the decision taken by prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Yusuf Raza Gilani to resume dialogue to settle differences between India and Pakistan offer a chance to open the door to greater regional and international security? If so, the latest summit of the eight-member South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Thimpu, the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan – which served as the occasion for the Singh-Gilani meeting – could turn out to be most memorable since its creation in 1985.Dominated by South Asia's two arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, SAARC is, in the words of India's Singh, a glass half-empty.The Indo-Pakistani schism over Kashmir is the main reason why SAARC has yet to craft the norms of co-operation that could improve the management of natural resources, prevent land and water degradation, and increase human security in South Asia.So will the resumption of dialogue ease tensions between India and Pakistan? The decision is welcome, but expectations about its outcome should be kept low.The most recent barrier to dialogue has been Islamabad's refusal to act against the seven Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) men currently on trial in Rawalpindi for their involvement in the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. And India says that the last few months have seen a rise in extremist forays into India's half of Kashmir (Jammu and Kashmir).Gilani has promised that Pakistani territory will not be misused to launch terrorist assaults on India. But similar complaints and promises have been made in the past, and New Delhi is not convinced that Islamabad intends to stop using militants as an instrument of state policy.

My Name Is Khan film review A likable and slickly constructed Bollywood tale of understanding and tolerance has unwittingly provoked a storm in MumbaiIndian superstar Shahrukh Khan (often lovingly intialised to SRK) has found this film to be a lot more controversial than expected, even allowing for its plotlines involving US homeland security and terrorism. SRK plays an Indian man with Asperger's syndrome who, for reasons revealed as the film unfolds, is on a quest to personally deliver a message to the US president. Fox paid a lot to secure the international rights to this film and while the ultimate message it delivers, of understanding, community and tolerance, is one that deserves to be heard, it seems unlikely that it will have far-reaching crossover appeal – to say nothing of its problems in Mumbai, where the large and very vocal Shiv Sena movement have been attacking Khan via the film that bears his name. Western screenwriting guru Syd Field gets a credit for story consultancy, but the film is still very much structured according to Indian traditions. For instance, the interval is still used as the point where the film changes gear. As usual, the first half is more soap opera, spending plenty of getting-to-know-you time with the appealing characters before putting them through the wringer in the more politicised second section. Khan's quest lands him in government detention and sees him helping out a hurricane-ravaged Georgia town, while the post 9-11 climate sees anyone even vaguely resembling a Muslim under verbal and often physical attack. It's stunningly shot, on mostly US locations, and tackles plenty of hard topics – its deceptively light touch gets heavier as things progress. It's a shame that much of the intended audience will not see this well-intentioned, slickly constructed and
