    • News Corp, the FCPA, and Eliot Spitzer's Longstanding Practice of Hypocrisy
Eliot Spitzer should count himself lucky that he did not exercise his right of self-representation. The former attorney general and then governor has been leading the charge for pursuing a federal indictment of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation following the News of the World corruption scandal (which includes bribery of police エリオットスピッツァーは、彼が自己表現の権利を行使しなかったことを彼自身が幸運カウントする必要があります

    • Anthony Weiner resigns, so what now? | Megan Carpentier
Shamed New York Congressman Anthony Weiner is resigning. But don't write him off for ever – just look at Eliot Spitzer nowHis was a name waiting for a scandal: Representative Anthony Weiner, a young (for Congress), pugnacious, even telegenic congressman who knew how to give the people what they wanted on camera. From rants on the House floor, applauded by progressives, to obstreperous appearances on Fox News, Weiner came to all but embody the modern internet-friendly politician, from his self-deprecating and prolific Twitter account to his fan-garnering Facebook page. And then, as we all learned, he liked himself (or, at least, parts of himself) on-camera a little more than most consider seemly for a married fortysomething congressman; he used his social media presence to connect with out-of-district fans for more personal than professional reasons. And then, those television appearances, out of keeping with Washington's regard for, well, appearances, seemed more in keeping with his love of showing off than mere political calculation. And finally, thanks to conservative media star Andrew Breitbart, we also all saw his clean-shaven nether regions in a shot more evocative of porn than politics. The question then became: could an elected official survive in Congress once a significant proportion of the country had seen his literal manhood? The answer Thursday, as it turns out, is no.With leadership calling for his head, his colleagues calling for his committee seats, reporters calling his wife and half the country still calling up his pictures, Weiner's decided to try to pull himself out of the spotlight by giving up on Congress. But even as his national poll numbers were heading down – the most recent showed that 60% of the country favoured his resignation – some of his soon null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • Why Did It Take So Long to Sue the AG?
The most surprising element in the announcement this week of a law suit against former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and Slate Magazine is that it did not happen long ago.  After all, he has been out of the governorship for over three years.  And there are a long line of bitter litigants who would like nothing better than to sue him.   Perhaps the reason is that as AG he was basically immune from such suits even after he left office. 元ニューヨーク検事総長Eliot Spitzerのとスレート誌に対する訴訟の今週の発表の中で最も驚くべき要素は、それはずっと前にそうなったわけです

    • Anthony Weiner's wife Huma Abedin reportedly pregnant
Congressman engulfed in scandal over images sent over internet and his wife reportedly tell family of pregnancyHuma Abedin, the wife of the Democratic congressman Anthony Weiner, who is currently engulfed in a cringe-inducing scandal over sexually suggestive images of himself he sent over the internet, is reportedly pregnant with her first baby.According to the New York Times, the couple have told family and intimate friends that Abedin is pregnant. The news comes out just two days after Weiner, a rising star within the Democratic party, made a grovelling televised apology in which he admitted he had sent semi-clad photographs of himself to at least six different women, some of which had occurred after his marriage. The politician at first denied he had sent via Twitter a photograph of himself in his underpants. For a week he claimed that his account had been breached by a hacker.Even within a party sadly accustomed to sex scandals – the Democratic governor of New York Eliot Spitzer was forced to resign after it was revealed that he enlisted the services of prostitutes and the former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is currently facing charges that he used campaign money to hush up an affair – the Weiner scandal has been excruciatingly embarrassing in its detail.Yet the New York representative has doggedly refused to resign. He is currently engaging in a round of calls apologising to top Democratic figures in an attempt to save his political career.Abedin is herself a prominent figure in Democratic politics. She has been a close aide to Hillary Clinton since the 2008 presidential nomination race and she continues to work for the secretary of state. As news of the pregnancy broke, the two women were in the air bound for north Africa on an official visit. AccordingとAbedinはpregnant.

    • New York state governor caught up in allegations against aide
David Paterson said to have phoned woman who had accused aide of domestic abuseThe governor of New York state called a woman who had lodged a domestic abuse accusation against one of his aides, just before she failed to show up in court to press the case, it has emerged. The apparent intervention by David Paterson, embroiled in a tough fight for a second term, was revealed in the latest article about the governor in the New York Times. The newspaper last week quoted aides and associates who said that Paterson was remote from governing, spending little time working and lots of time relaxing with friends and campaign donors as the state grapples with political gridlock in Albany, corruption allegations, ethics violations and a huge budget shortfall.Paterson, New York's first black governor, assumed office in 2008 after Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned after a prostitution scandal. But the governor has failed to garner much public support or campaign cash in his effort to win election to a second term.In the latest blow to his re-election hopes, a woman testified that she had been violently assaulted by David Johnson, a Paterson aide with whom she had lived for about four years, the paper reported. She complained in court that she had been pressured by agents of the New York state police, including one of the governor's security team. Then, just before the woman was to seek a protective order against Johnson, Paterson called her, the paper said, citing the woman's lawyer. On 8 February, she did not appear for a court hearing and the case was dismissed. The governor's office acknowledged the call took place but said it occurred the day before the court hearing, and that the woman initiated it. Paterson said he has directed the state police to investigate, and suspended Johnson _NULL_

    • The Eliot Spitzer scandal's true victims | Melissa Ditmore
The New York attorney general was disgraced for hiring escorts, but never went to jail – unlike the sex workers he prosecutedEliot Spitzer was the attorney general and then governor of New York state. As attorney general, he prosecuted prostitution rings, as well as mafia dons and corrupt financial managers. In 2005, Spitzer, then attorney general, prosecuted owners and employees of the escort agency New York Confidential, sending top-rated escort-turned-author Natalie McLennan and artist-turned-booker Hulbert Waldroup to prison. As governor, Spitzer signed a law increasing penalties for clients of prostitutes (PDF). When it came out that he was himself a client, Spitzer resigned. He was not charged with any crime. CeeCee Suwal served six months and has a felony conviction for arranging Spitzer's meeting with the escort that led to his downfall. Each appears in a new documentary, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, to be released across the US on 12 November, this week. One person who isn't interviewed, however, is Ashley Dupre. She was the escort Spitzer met in Washington, DC; after the scandal broke, she later became a NY Post columnist. Director Alex Gibney's visually beautiful film attempts to rehabilitate Spitzer's image. Dupre is slammed for her media appearances – seemingly because they inhibited a comeback for Spitzer. Her former boss, CeeCee, is far more generous, praising Dupre's ability to move ahead after her role in the scandal. Spitzer is a wealthy man with no criminal record who now hosts a CNN show. Gibney has misplaced his efforts attempting to vindicate Spitzer. Instead, those convicted felons – put away by Spitzer for so-called victimless crimes – are the people who really need the image overhaul now that they are out of jail.
