    • Albums of 2010, No 10: John Grant - Queen of Denmark
Largely unknown a year ago, the former Czars frontman surprised many with his weird and wired take on soft rockExclusive session: John Grant performs Where Dreams Go To DieLast year, John Grant was known to perhaps a handful of hipsters as the former frontman of the Czars, a band who enjoyed a measure of critical acclaim if not commercial success. Twelve months on, his name features in many 2010 roundups for an album that is one of the year's word-of-mouth triumphs. After the Czars imploded, Grant descended into booze, drugs, suicidal thoughts and self-loathing, but subsequently had the kind of epiphany that can follow such a crisis. The result is a scarred but revelatory album. Queen of Denmark recalls Dennis (brother of Brian) Wilson's 1977 masterpiece, Pacific Ocean Blue: it has a similar feel of gazing out on to something endless and darkly inviting. With Midlake as his backing band, Grant assembled a tapestry of flutes, piano, strings, eerie synths and gentle drums; almost a weird, wired take on 70s soft rock with some deliberate, ironic nods to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Dean Friedman. Marz and Where Dreams Go to Die take cocked glances at capitalist America while the perkier Jesus Hates Faggots pokes fun at redneck attitudes, which Grant was forced to endure as a gay child in a religious Colorado household. But the sucker punch arrived with the emotionally wringing ballads Queen of Denmark, Sigourney Weaver and Caramel, on which the 41-year-old croons like a latterday, acid-scarred Sinatra. Grant has written almost supernaturally beautiful hymns of love, despair, chaos and ultimate redemption. His are the sort of songs that some artists spend their entire careers wishing they had written.

    • Nato summit: Start must not be stopped | Editorial
Republican efforts to undermine the Start treaty threaten to destroy the rapprochement between Russia and the westBarack Obama's decision to overturn the neoconservative policy of containing Russia has become the major foreign policy achievement of his presidency. It was meant to be only the start of a series of moves to cool international tensions – including direct talks with Iran, and starting final status talks on Israel-Palestine. As fate had it, pressing the reset button with Moscow produced real dividends. They are worth listing, because they stretch beyond Europe's borders. It transformed Poland's fraught relations with Russia. It produced a new strategic arms reduction treaty (Start), cutting the number of deployed strategic warheads by one-third; it secured Russia's (reluctant) backing for sanctions on Iran and stopped it delivering S-300 air defence missiles to Tehran. It helped non-proliferation efforts as Russia shut down its last remaining weapons-grade plutonium-producing power plant. Russia became a vital route for supplies and troops heading for Afghanistan, and provided one-third of the fuel US troops use. When ethnic violence broke out in Osh and Jalal-Abad in Kyrgyzstan, Russia and the US sang from the same hymn sheet. It could have been a repeat of Georgia, a proxy war in the middle of volatile central Asia. Both Russia and US have airbases there. It turned out to be anything but.All of this progress and more has now been put in jeopardy by Republican threats to put a stop to Start. Two-thirds of the Senate are needed to ratify the treaty, which means nine Republican votes in the current lame-duck session (an outside possibility) or 14 votes in the new Senate that comes into session in the new year (an impossibility). • In praise of … Englesea Brook | Editorial
This chapel and museum in a Cheshire hamlet is celebrating the founding of Primitive MethodismWhen visitors arrive at Englesea Brook chapel and museum in a Cheshire hamlet near Crewe, they are offered a smile, a cuppa and maybe a chocolate digestive. Which is more than they will be given at the British Museum or the Tate. This year (and rather more next year) Englesea Brook is celebrating the bicentenary of the founding of Primitive Methodism by Hugh Bourne, a Staffordshire wheelwright, with the help of William Clowes, who was a potter, an evangelist and an exceptional dancer. In 1807 both attended, on the hill known as Mow Cop, an open-air meeting that mixed fiery preaching and noisy hymn-singing, and which drew inspiration from the gatherings of the Great Awakening that revived American evangelicalism. Such associations soon saw both men evicted from Wesleyan Methodism. The museum tells the story of the duo and their working-class nonconformity simply and with affection. The chapel, whose exterior resembles the comfortable home of a farm worker, has been Victorianised downstairs but retains box pews in the gallery. Next door in the Sunday school room are banners, piously inscribed cups used at love feasts, and celebratory tea sets (Stoke's potteries are not far away) featuring portraits of the two preachers. One case holds Bourne's right boot, which had been cut to ease the pressure on a foot swollen from the hundreds of miles he walked to preach to the faithful. His simple grave is in a peaceful little burial ground across the road from the chapel.ChristianityReligionHeritageguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
