■ estate says film misled fans (24-6-2010) in a statement sent to the associated press earlier today, michael jackson's estate took issue with a documentary that is being released in japan on friday, the first anniversary of the superstar's death. some of the footage in the film was shot by marc schaffel, a former business partner of jackson's with whom he had a major falling out with in a messy legal trial about four years ago. now the estate is saying that the film's promoters have 'misled' jackson's fans by implying that the film was authorized by the estate. nothing could be further from the truth, the statement read. his estate was not consulted on this film, and will not endorse it. the statement also went on to say that none of the proceeds from the film will go to the estate, which benefits jackson's three young children, his mother and various charities. it also said the movie cannot legally use any of jackson's music. howard king, an attorney for schaffel, said thursday that his client had licensed footage that schaffel either shot himself or hired a crew to take for the film's producer, flamingo features. schaffel provided footage from 2003 including shots of jackson's birthday party at his neverland ranch. king said schaffel did not represent any endorsement from the estate. he said the japanese distributor of the film, a company called star sands, may have mistakenly been promoting the film as authorized, but he said advertisements were being changed early friday. marc schaffel could not have been more clear about the lack of involvement of the estate, king said in an interview. what i believe is that star sands advertised the movie as being endorsed by the estate without knowing the truth, king said. i believe they are currently changing their advertising, now that they have become aware of the estate's claim. king also said that schaffel was in tokyo for the premiere of the film with jackson's ex-wife, debbie rowe. source: mjfc / abcnews.go.com
