- AMD Earnings Could Propel Stock To $9.50
AMD plans to report its Q2 2011 earnings tomorrow following its much larger rival Intel that reports today, and many believe that 2011 could stack up as the company’s most profitable year since 2000. This implies that investors will looked for improved profits in Q2 vs. last year as well. We take this opportunity to look at some key areas that investors should watch out for given several significant developments that have taken place in first half of 2011. Our price estimate for AMD stands at $9.50, implying a premium of about 45% to the market price.

- AMD's SeaMicro Deal Will Strengthen Server Market Presence
AMD recently stated that it will acquire SeaMicro for $334 million. SeaMicro builds micro servers that essentially pack together several chips to save space and energy. AMD’s attempt comes as a result of the company’s consistently poor performance compared to Intel in the server market over the past few quarters. Going forward, this market is only going to get more competitive as Nvidia and others companies enter with ARM-based server chips. Therefore AMD is looking to leverage this acquisition to gain server processor market share as soon as it can. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

- Apple's Stock Down 10 percent from its All Time Highs, is the Correction Over?
Apple?s (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock continued its descent on Monday. In early afternoon, Apple was trading near the $580 mark, down 3.32 percent for the day, and 10 percent below its all-time highs of $644, though there were no major corporate developments to count for such decline. One thing worth noticing, however, is that Apple had plenty of company in its descent among high priced stocks: Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) was down 2.52 percent for the day, and Pricelinine.com (NASDAQ:PCLN) was down 3.83 percent; both stocks have also been on the correction mode in the last ten days. At the same time, low-priced high-tech stocks like Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) posted modest gains; the broader market was also trading slightly higher with SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE:SPY) up 0.15 percent. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Is intelligent design bad theology? | The question
Christian biologists say it is. The sociologist, Steve Fuller, claims it is not. Who's right? The theory of intelligent design was decisively ejected from American public (state) schools at the conclusion of the 2005 Dover trial, when Judge Jones found (pdf) that it was a religious doctrine, and not a scientific one. In its narrow form, championed by Michael Behe, intelligent design raises a direct challenge to Darwinism by claiming that there are certain biological mechanisms that could not have arisen as a result of natural selection working on natural variation. Instead, they are so complex that they must be evidence of a supernatural designer. It is generally agreed that this is bad science. The explanations for any particular complexity can be produced by science without allowing any room for miracles, even if this will take time. But is it also bad theology? Christian evolutionary biologists claim that it is. The sociologist of science, Steve Fuller, who testified for the defence at the Dover trial, claims it is not. This week we examine his claim, and the reactions to it.ReligionAtheismChristianityguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Challenges Ahead for Windows 8 on ARM
One of the most anticipated technology events in 2012 will be the commercial release of Microsoft's Windows 8. Microsoft not only wants to demonstrate their commitment to the Windows PC platform but also show that they can provide deep levels of innovation in new platforms like tablets and convertibles. Microsoft must also demonstrate to many that they can compete on many fronts with Apple, Google and Amazon on platforms, apps and services. Microsoft turned over every stone possible in their planning stage, eventually deciding to make a very huge hardware change in supporting the ARM processor architecture, a major departure from PC Windows platform exclusivity with X86, namely Intel and AMD. With risk comes return, but only if one mitigates the risk. What's becoming increasingly clear is that Windows 8 on ARM architecture, aka WoA, will face many hurdles which will need to be quickly overcome to successfully position it. If not, it will be very challenging for Microsoft, ARM, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, their customers and their retail channels. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Pyongyang has denied involvement in the sinking, which killed 46 sailors.Relations have been particularly rocky since a pro-US, conservative government took office in Seoul in early 2008 with a tough policy on Pyongyang. The newspaper report said it had not confirmed when and where Kwon was executed. - DNA Sequencing Firm Apes Apple Computer's Ads
Companies that make machines to sequence DNA like to compare themselves to the personal computer industry in its early days. Part of the reason is that cost of decoding a base pair of DNA is increasing at a speed that can only be compared to Moore's law -- the doubling of microprocessor speed every eighteen months put forward by Intel's founder. Part of the reason is that the guys who run sequencing companies idolize the early days of the PC, with a particular strain of hero worship resolved for Steve Jobs.

- Unthinkable? L'entente militaire
It makes sense for two European military powers to co-operate on warheads and joint submarine patrols but why stop there?A report, dismissed on both sides of the channel as speculation and therefore probably true, that the UK and France are negotiating an agreement which would see British nuclear warheads serviced by French scientists does not go far enough.French defence analysts rightly say that for this to happen Britain would have to break its very special relationship with America in this field. Would that be such a bad thing? It makes eminent sense for two European military powers, both of whom have nuclear deterrents which are independent in name only, to co-operate with each other on warheads and joint submarine patrols. But why stop there? Why not consider transport aircraft, helicopter capacity and carriers? Why should French warplanes not operate from British aircraft carriers and vice versa? The Royal Navy is still considering ordering cheaper catapult-launched aircraft for its future carriers, a move which would enable French Dassault Rafale M planes to land on them, because the cost of the alternative – the American F-35 Joint Striker Fighter – has ballooned. The price of ordering two carriers and the 140 F-35s planned to go with them would be to scupper the rest of the fleet. France and Britain have much in common at the moment. Both are proud, postcolonial and broke.Between them, they have 460 nuclear warheads. Each has conventional forces that neither can afford.Signals intelligence (eavesdropping) should also be combined. Distracted by conspiracy theories surrounding David Kelly's death, we have let those who drove him to suicide off the hookThe publication of the pathologist's report into the death of Dr David Kelly should finally lay to rest conspiracy theorists' views that he was murdered by the security services. It provides harrowing detail of the self-inflicted wounds he sustained and no evidence whatsoever that he had been attacked or fought off attackers.Unfortunately, the failure to publish the report during Lord Hutton's investigation in 2004 and the original decision to keep it secret for 70 years fuelled the notion that the manner of his death was a cover-up. Yet careful examination of the evidence given by Roy Green, a forensic biologist and crime-scene specialist, to the Hutton Inquiry on 3 September 2003 – it is still on the inquiry website – will show that many of the details in the pathologist's report were made public at the time.It would also be extraordinary that Lord Hutton and the inquiry secretary, Lee Hughes, who forced the PM's aggressive press secretary, Alastair Campbell, to release his private diaries and the intelligence agencies to publish internal Whitehall minutes, should be suborned by the government to suppress evidence of a murder. The Hutton inquiry, whatever one feels about its findings, was one of the most open and transparent investigations ever held – and Hughes is an unsung hero in Whitehall in pressing for the Freedom of Information Act.The explanation is much more mundane. Lord Hutton wanted to safeguard the privacy of Kelly's family, and he knew at the time that any request to keep the details secret could be overruled because of the Freedom of Information Act.The real scandal is not the belief in a conspiracy to cover up a murder, but the fact

- Nouri al-Maliki's return would damage Iraq | Nussaibah Younis
A coalition government dominated by Nouri al-Maliki and the Iranian-backed Sadrists would do little to solve Iraq's problemsCoverage of the Iranian-brokered deal between Nouri al-Maliki and Muqtada al-Sadr has focused on fears that Iranian influence is eclipsing US power in Iraq. But the threat to the US is exaggerated. Being forced to turn to Iran for help has been embarrassing for Maliki, who ran an Iraqi nationalist election campaign that distanced itself from Iran and emphasised Iraq's sovereignty.Rabid anti-Iranian sentiment among both Shia and Sunni Iraqis, including many of Sadr's supporters, mean that Iran's grip over Iraq is largely limited to times of political desperation. Among ordinary Iraqis, Iran is almost as unpopular as the US. Thus, with some political will, the US can claw back the narrow strategic advantage that the Iranians may win through a Shia coalition deal.A far more worrying prospect is the irreparable damage that a Maliki-Sadrist government could inflict on Iraq. Maliki's power and intransigence have been a major cause of delay in the formation of a new Iraqi government. Early in the post-election period both the Sadrists and the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) offered to negotiate a coalition with Maliki's al-Da'wah party on the condition that Maliki would not be prime minister. Maliki refused.Negotiations with Iyad Allawi, leader of the secular-Sunni Iraqiya list, broke down over the same issue, namely Maliki's insistence on remaining top dog. And Maliki is not a force to be ignored. As he used his first term in office to build a formidable power base among supporters and in the military and intelligence establishments, many fear the level of power that Maliki may be able to accrue with another four years in office. - We mustn't let the lure of trade blind us to Russia's failings | Observer editorial
The west still needs to be wary of Moscow's abuses of powerDuring the cold war, Russian dissidents tended to be intellectuals: poets, artists, scientists. Mikhail Khodorkovsky does not fit that pattern. He is one of a post-Soviet generation of businessmen who acquired lucrative shareholdings in state enterprises in exchange for supporting the former president, Boris Yeltsin. Most Russians consider that deal a colossal theft of public assets. The beneficiaries became known as the oligarchs. Now Mr Khodorkovsky is in jail, convicted of fraud in 2005 and facing new charges that would see him imprisoned for another 20 years. His fate reveals a lot about the direction Russia has taken in the decade since Vladimir Putin took power.Mr Putin offered the country's media and energy barons a deal. They could keep some of their wealth if they renounced any ambitions to meddle in politics. Most acquiesced; Mr Khodorkovsky did not, seeking to fund liberal trends in an increasingly authoritarian, nationalist climate. That is why he lost his freedom.Writing in today's Observer, he describes himself as a political prisoner and calls on Britain to challenge Russia on human rights and corruption. Many Russians would question the authority of a former oligarch in passing moral judgments. Khodorkovsky is no Solzhenitsyn. But the thrust of his argument is sound. The Kremlin exercises power capriciously and without regard for the rule of law. At the domestic level, that makes for individual tales of injustice. At the global level, it poses a strategic threat. Russia is a nuclear power and a major supplier of energy to Europe.Britain alone cannot change the course of Russia's political development. But it can resist the temptation to ignore abuses of power in exchange for investment favours.
- Somalia: Roots of war
Almost two decades on from the overthrow of Mohamed Siad Barre Somalia's internal conflict continuesSomalia's descent into anarchy began in 1991 with the overthrow of the dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. But the roots of the current power struggle, and its religious nature, are more recent. It began with the growing influence of a network of Sharia courts, which were established to dispense justice in the absence of a functioning government, and to provide social services and security.By late 2005 the influence and popularity of the Islamic courts union (ICU), which included moderate clerics as well as radicals, was sufficient to threaten the reign of powerful warlords who carved up much of the country. In the capital, Mogadishu, a warlord alliance began working with US intelligence agents to attempt to keep hold of power. In return for large cash payments they promised to hand over alleged al-Qaida suspects within the ICU.News of the US involvement only increased the ICU's popularity, and by mid-2006 they had taken over Mogadishu and quickly expanded their territory. While some saw the new Islamist administration as the best hope for Somalia in more than a decade, Ethiopia saw the irredentist tendencies of some of the ICU leaders as an existential threat. In December 2006 Ethiopia's powerful army swept through Somalia. The ICU disintegrated, but a new resistance quickly emerged. The Shabaab rebels were the most radical and effective. After Ethiopia withdrew in early 2009 Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, a moderate former ICU leader, was installed as president of Somalia in an effort to placate the Shabaab and other Islamist militant groups, though, it turned out, without success.SomaliaXan Riceguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to

- Theresienstadt weekend | Classical review
Wigmore Hall, LondonThe greatest musical experiences radically alter our perspectives. This was very much the case with the Nash Ensemble's Theresienstadt weekend. Concerts, films, talks and exhibitions examined the extraordinary cultural flowering in the ghetto-camp near Prague, set up by the Nazis in 1941, where, among thousands of others, the Czech-Jewish intelligentsia were held before transportation to death camps. The event's force lay in its broadening of our contextual awareness, and in its revelation of the quality of the work produced.Paintings and drawings by children, unflinching witnesses to history, hung on the walls of the Wigmore's subterranean Bechstein room. Three extraordinary women – an actor, a painter and a singer – spoke with wise eloquence of surviving both Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. Creativity was an existential affirmation of life, though traditions died along with people. Krása and Pavel Haas, Janáček's rightful successors, were murdered in the gas chambers. The ironies of Weimar Republic cabaret were kept alive, for a while, in bittersweet songs by Adolf Strauss and Otto Skute。ky.Many works were outright masterpieces. Haas's Four Songs on Chinese Poetry, Erwin Schulhoff's Duo for Violin and Cello, and above all Krása's Passacaglia and Fuga and his Rimbaud settings for baritone, clarinet, viola and cello belong in the regular repertory, irrespective of the circumstances of their composition. The Nash, an ensemble of stars, played with great technical power and depth of feeling. The singer was Wolfgang Holzmair, richly expressive, if overly score-bound. The Nash should tour this internationally – it deserves to be heard around the world.

- North Korea jails relatives of economic officials – report
Human rights group says regime has rounded up 34 people after executing officials blamed for botched currency reformNorth Korea sent relatives of former economic officials to a prison camp over the country's botched currency reform, a South Korean aid group has said. The ministry of state security sent 34 family members of former economic chief Pak Nam Gi and others to a detention centre on the outskirts of the northern city of Hoeryong last month, Seoul-based Good Friends said. The communist north redenominated its currency late last year to fight inflation and reassert control over its burgeoning market economy. The measure reportedly sparked unrest as it left many North Koreans stuck with piles of worthless bills.Pak spearheaded the reform as the former finance and planning department chief of the ruling Workers' party. He and an unidentified senior official were reportedly executed by a firing squad at a Pyongyang stadium in March as punishment for the policy failure. On 14 June the relatives of Pak and other officials were collected and forced into a wagon before being sent to the prison camp, the organisation reported, citing an unidentified official at the north's security ministry. The authorities transported the relatives in the middle of night in part to keep it a secret and avoid international criticism, the official was quoted as saying.South Korea's unification ministry, which handles relations with the north, said it could not immediately confirm the report. - Kim Jong-il's youngest son 'being groomed for North Korean leadership'
Speculation about Kim Jong-un role in North's succession plans has intensified since leader reportedly had stroke in 2008The youngest son of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, became a member of parliament last year, South Korean news reports said today. The reports are another sign that Kim Jong-un is being groomed to succeed his father as the head of the communist regime. It is widely believed that 68-year-old Kim plans to hand power to his third son at some point, although little is known about him. Speculation about the North's succession plans has intensified since the senior Kim reportedly had a stroke in 2008. He has led North Korea since 1994, when he took power in a hereditary succession.Kim Jong-un reportedly ran for a parliamentary seat in elections last March. His name, however, was not on the list of Supreme People's Assembly legislators, sparking speculation that he may not have run in the polls or could have used an alias. On Tuesday, the mass-circulation Dong-a Ilbo newspaper quoted a high-level western source as saying Kim was elected in the rubber-stamp legislature's Constituency No 216. The source said he obtained the information from unidentified North Korean figures about two months after the vote.Another national daily, JoongAng Ilbo, carried a similar report, saying the comments would confirm that Kim had formally entered government service after being touted as the North's next leader. The paper also said Constituency No 216 has a special meaning in North Korea because Kim Jong-il's birthday falls on 16 February. It said the western source spoke during a meeting with journalists in Seoul yesterday.A spokesman at South Korea's main spy agency, the National Intelligence Service, said his organisation believed there was a low probability the younger

- Afghanistan war logs: How the Guardian got the story
Secret military files have been opened up by Wikileaks in a joint venture with the Guardian, the New York Times and Der SpiegelThe Afghanistan war logs series of reports on the war in Afghanistan published by the Guardian is based on the US military's internal logs of the conflict between January 2004 and December 2009. The material, largely classified by the US as secret, was obtained by the whistleblower website Wikileaks, which has published the full archive. The Guardian, along with the New York Times and the German weekly Der Spiegel, was given access to the logs before publication to verify their authenticity and assess their significance.A team of investigative reporters, regional specialists and database experts spent weeks combing the data for matters of public interest. After establishing the meaning of more than 400 abbreviations and military acronyms they were able to authenticate the logs by comparing them with other records and cross-checking with other sources. They were able to dismiss some of the more lurid intelligence reports as unfounded and establish that some aspects of the coalition's recording of civilian casualties is unreliable. But taken together, the logs provide a revealing and important picture of how the war is being conducted: the continuing escalation of the conflict; the weakness of much coalition intelligence; and the gap between the polished account of the war offered for public consumption and the messy reality experienced by commanders on the ground. This is one side's raw, immediate first hand account of the conflict as it happened.Although the material has a relatively low level of secrecy classification, the Guardian has taken care not to publish information that could identify intelligence sources, expose unknown intelligence-ga 秘密軍事ファイルは、Wikileaksがガーディアンとの共同事業に開かれている、New York TimesのアンデアSpiegelTheアフガニスタン戦争は、米国の軍隊のinternal conflict ofログon based、アフガニスタンガーディアンでpublishedの戦争on一連のレポートをログに記録2004年1月2009年12月の間

- Letters: Intellectuals give one-sided picture of Iran
I read the article by Timothy Garton Ash (Iran's tortured Green movement is down but not out, 10 June) with great interest, a lot of respect and little empathy. What I did agree with wholeheartedly was the sentiment in the final paragraph which suggests that whatever we do, we should do no harm. This highly honourable ideal seems at a variance with almost every other sentiment expressed.I was visiting Iran about a year ago, at the time of the run-up to the contentious elections. I drove thousands of miles around Iran, not specifically visiting large cities like Tehran and Tabriz but staying within my comfort zone and talking to my type of person. (I have passable if basic Farsi.) The opinions of these people were almost universally in support of the establishment. I had been warned to stay clear of politics and religion, but it was these subjects that people wanted to talk about and those of my type that I talked to held these established views. My type of people are my type of socialists. Mucky-handed, hard-grafting socialists who are as far removed from the intellectual ideal as the Guardian is from the Daily Worker. If we feel the need to bang the drum of democracy and universal suffrage then we must be prepared for the occasional disappointment. The highly vocal and media-savvy opinion of the academic and intellectual is worth exactly the same as the opinion of a farmer or truck driver who does not have the opportunity or the inclination to seek out an audience for his opinion. Iran, outside Tehran, is a safe country with high morals and a code of civil conduct that we must admire and respect and may in fact be envious of. - Wikileaks and the ISI-Taliban nexus | Peter Galbraith
Pakistan's intelligence leaders should ask whether their support of the Taliban is worth the price the country may have to payThe Wikileaks documents, splashed in the Guardian and several other papers, provide useful confirmation of what is readily discerned from public sources: the Afghanistan War is going badly, the Taliban are exceptionally brutal, US forces have not always attacked the right targets and elements in Pakistan continue to support the Taliban. The most striking feature of the documents – an unprecedented 90,000 pages of mostly raw intelligence that could only be leaked thanks to 21st-century technology that enables large volumes of data to be compressed into a tiny thumb drive – is the inconsistent quality of the intelligence. Americans should be asking why they are paying upwards of $50bn for this kind of information and why military officers and diplomats so rely on it.Of all this information, the most troubling concerns the duplicitous double dealing by Pakistan's powerful spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI. While some of the intelligence seems wildly implausible (surely the ISI did not plot to poison Kabul-bound beer, an enormously complex operation with limited pay off since US troops are not allowed to drink alcohol in Afghanistan), the Wikileaks documents show a continued relationship between the ISI and the Taliban. This is not surprising. In the 1990s, the ISI helped create the Taliban and Pakistani support was decisive to the Taliban's capture of Kabul in 1996. The US has known since 2001 that Pakistan did not break its ties with the Taliban as President Pervez Musharraf had promised President Bush. After all, Mullah Omar and his close associates have been in Pakistan since 2001 and it is not plausible that Pakistan did not kno

- Pakistan and Afghanistan: interdependent, distrustful neighbours | Michael Semple
The relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan is a lot more complex than described in the stories of ISI goonsNo one should be surprised that 180 of the leaked intelligence reports sound alarm bells about the involvement of Pakistan's ISI intelligence service in Afghan insurgency. Plenty such alarm bells have been sounded in the public domain already. But it is important that policymakers draw the right conclusions.During the period covered by these reports, I sat in on one of the first national workshops of the Afghan reconciliation commission, headed by former president, Sebghatullah Mojadedi. Provincial police chiefs and governors and other officials split into small groups to discuss the causes of ongoing conflict. Encouraged by Mojadedi himself, every single working group fed back the conclusion that Pakistani ISI interference was the prime cause of conflict in the country. This was more an article of faith than an empirical finding. Assembled Afghan officialdom simply worked on the basis that Pakistan had supported the Taliban, was opposed to the post-Taliban set-up and must be behind any resistance to this new setup. In an even more blatant fashion, while visiting one of the Afghan provinces bordering Pakistan I asked the provincial intelligence chief to explain his role. He described his main function as being to inculcate in the people of the province a belief that Pakistan could never tolerate a stable Afghanistan, so that they would always be on their guard to check ISI interference. The point is that Afghanistan and Pakistan are countries with a complex history of interdependence. Although most of Afghanistan's trade comes through Pakistan and Pakistan was the main place of refuge for Afghan refugees during the 1980s, the most popular way of establishing cr

The core PREVENT strategy adopted is in tatters – misunderstood, mistrusted and messy. Anti-terrorism initiatives remain pedantic, paradoxical and reactionary. The struggle for hearts and minds is in a stalemate – but in the global wired village our young and angry youth are increasingly vulnerable and at great risk. The anti-terrorism industry is now worth billions globally. Despite their being so many tanks there is really little that is dynamic, innovative or courageous thinking at the core. Hypotheses based on ignorance are heavily mixed with those fuelled by fear to produce an extremely unhealthy situation. What is needed now is not recrimination but a gutsy and robust retrospection.Security matters – like all other fundamental issues affecting our quality of life and existence – are a concern for all of us. A strategy based on an aggressive demonization of an entire community for the actions of a tiny minority was destined to be still-born. The majority of British Muslims loathed being lumped together and made to look like a fifth column of Al Qaeda rather than bona fide citizens of a country to which they are making so much of a contribution. The lager mentality that developed was further enhanced by irresponsible mixing of legal enforcement efforts with community capacity building. The uncoordinated and sometimes contradictory thinking at the top was soon reflected at the community level leading to haphazard, half-baked projects filled not with a united purpose but with jealousy, unhealthy competition and suspicions.
- Can we choose what we believe? | The question
How do you believe the things you do, and are they things you can change? Some of our beliefs we hold after conscious deliberation. Others just seem to have been there forever, as a natural part of life. And sometimes, beliefs seem to take hold of us, almost against our wills. But how is the balance struck? Faith positions, whether positive or negative, can take of these forms. There are careful, slow rational conversions and losses of faith; there are sudden moments of enlightenment, and for some people faith or lack of it is entirely taken for granted. No one here has to explain why they are not followers of Astarte. So this week we are interested in personal answers: how do you believe the things you do? Would it be better to believe them in different ways – more rationally, or perhaps with greater feeling? Is that in fact something you can change? A lot of Christian advice deals with strengthening the different components of faith, so that it is both intellectual and emotional. Do atheists need the same kind of disciplines? Do Muslims, or even Buddhists? What works and why?ReligionPhilosophyAtheismguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

This letter, evidently what DG Mariot Leslie was referring to in her April 14 meeting with DCM (ref a), requests that ALL future requests to use UK territory for intel flights be conveyed by Embassy London and be accompanied by enough information that ministers can fully consider whether sensitive missions might put the UK at risk of being complicit in unlawful acts. - Smolensk crash passengers' connections to Katyn victims
Many of the Poles killed on their way to commemorate the massacre were closely connected to the people murdered by the SovietsWhen the plane carrying the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and 95 other people went down in fog last Saturday, near the site where an estimated 22,000 Poles were massacred 70 years earlier, there were terrible echoes in those who died. In 1940, it was army officers, lawyers, intellectuals, academics, historians, engineers, priests; among those who died last week were General Franciszek Gagor, the army chief of staff, Aleksander Szczygło, the head of the national security service, and 。ławomir Skrzypek, the president of the national bank. The party also included political activists, such as Anna Walentynowicz, and historian Janusz Kurtyka. But there were others on board who had personal connections to the massacre in Katyn. Wojciech Seweryn, 70, was an artist who lived in Chicago; his father, a Polish infantryman, died at Katyn when Seweryn was just a few months old. He emigrated to the US in 1976, and was a prominent member of his adopted city's Polish community. His sculpture commemorating the Katyn massacre – the Virgin Mary cradling a wounded soldier – stands at St Adalbert cemetery in Niles, Illinois. Also travelling was Leszek Solski, 75, a retired civil engineer, who lost his father and uncle in 1940, and spent his life trying to uncover documents about the massacre. Ewa Bakowska, 48, the library curator of Kraków's Jagiellonian University, was the granddaughter of Mieczysław Smorawinski, one of only two Polish generals identified among the victims of the massacre.Canon Bronisław Gostomski, 61, travelled from his home in London to represent the families of those murdered. - So why do we need another religion website? | Jeremy Lott
Because we can present the big picture well. And because religion is vital – serious and silly, scandalous and sublimeThis week, after some effort, the Real Clear family of websites births two new offspring: Real Clear Religion (RCR) and Real Clear Science. I am the editor of the first and associate editor of the latter. The Guardian was kind enough to ask me to write a few words on the pressing subject of: why another religion website? There are two ways of answering that question. The first, and easiest, answer is technical. Real Clear websites offer what we call intelligent aggregation. We are both high- and low-tech. Some parts of our websites are automated, but the main product that we offer readers is our judgment. We read many, probably far too many, emails and scour countless websites to give a growing audience what we believe to be the best information and analysis on a timely, manageable schedule. It's a tall order but I'd like to think we pull it off. Our flagship website, Real Clear Politics, is the daily cheat sheet for American politicos and political junkies of every party, as well as interested observers around the world. It does a reasonable job of corralling the whole of American debate into one place. No site really does that for religion, so it seemed like a good area to expand Real Clear. The other answer is a bit more philosophical, and uncomfortable. Narrow the question to: why religion?, and one is forced to drop any pretence and admit to being an interested party. That's me. I'm the son of a Baptist minister and a Catholic convert. While RealClearReligion.org is not a Catholic website or a Protestant website, or a Scientologist website for that matter, it does have a point of view.In my inaugural post on the website's blog, Casting Lots, I took a s

Jeffrey John is rejected for a bishopric in a farcical rerun of 2003 (Gay cleric barred, 8 July), while the supreme court embraces those at risk due to their sexual orientation (Gay refugees entitled to asylum, judges rule, 8 July)). Yet again, the secular state reflects the values of a humane progressive society, while the church remains in thrall to its bigots and backwoodsmen. It never ceases to amaze me how the church's primeval behaviour is so constantly at odds with the values of love and compassion which are supposed to be at its very heart, kicking and screaming against every measure of enlightened social change in the last 50 years. Meanwhile, decent, intelligent people quietly ignore the whole idiotic tribe of them and get on with the job of creating a more civilised and caring world. - Is science teaching undermined by religious instruction in some state-funded faith schools? | Dr Evan Harris
The evolution-creationism debate in schools must be about religious education lessons not just science lessons. This is my blueprint for better REFrom time to time there are concerns raised that some state-funded religious schools teach creationism, or intelligent design, in their science lessons. The last Labour government and the Conservatives in opposition have always denied this is a problem and have always said that they will not stand for the teaching of creationism in science lessons. Ministers always say that creationism can't be taught in science lessons Whenever this issue cropped up in parliament I was always concerned that the debate was missing the point. It is no good teaching about evolution (which is a scientific fact) in a science lesson at 9am then at 10am, in a religious education lesson, instructing pupils not to believe it. The whole problem with RE lessons is not that they exist but that they amount to religious instruction. There is no basis for allowing state-funded schools to indoctrinate their pupils, even if that is what their parents want. They can provide this in optional after-school (or lunchtime) classes or clubs. They could even have something on a Sunday where children are taught to be believers. They could call it Sunday School! The recognition that RE lessons are proselytising is reflected in the right that parents have to withdraw their children from these lessons. In contrast, they can't withdraw their children from biology lessons even if they have profound religious objections to their being taught about sexual reproduction or evolution – these subjects are recognised as non-proselytising. Secularists like me believe that RE is a valid subject for study in the curriculum but should be about what different religions (and other worl 学校でのevolution -創造の議論は、宗教教育の授業だけでなく、理科の授業でなければなりません

He was convicted on charges of passing secret information about Russian agents working under cover in the US and about American sources working for Russian intelligence. A US global intelligence company, Stratfor, said that Zaporozhsky was rumoured to have passed information leading to the capture of Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames, both extremely valuable double agents in the US intelligence services.Sergei Skripal, a former colonel in the Russian military intelligence, was found guilty of passing state secrets to Britain and sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2006. - Press watchdog joins Le Monde in legal action over journalists' sources
The international press watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, is to become a joint plaintiff in a complaint by Le Monde alleging that President Sarkozy's aides violated a law protecting the confidentiality of journalists' sources. It is claimed that government officials used the country's counterintelligence services to identify an Elysée Palace source who leaked information to the newspaper, as Kim Willsher reported last week. The leaks relate to claims of tax evasion and illegal party funding by the L'Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt. Reporters Without Borders, which is based in Paris, campaigned for years for a law explicitly protecting the confidentiality of journalists' sources, which was eventually adopted. Now the organisation is outraged that the law appears to have been breached by the president who placed it on the statute book.Source: Reporters Without BordersPress freedomFranceNicolas SarkozyGreenslade on Europeguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- George Bush: Worst. President. Ever? | Richard Adams
Academic poll ranks George Bush as one of the worst presidents in US history. But was he really as bad as all that? It's time for another one of those pseudo-serious polls rating the US presidents. This one, from Siena College's research institute, asked 238 presidential scholars to rank the 43 presidents [pdf], and judged that George Bush was among the worst of all time.According to the survey:Today, just one year after leaving office, the former president has found himself in the bottom five at 39th rated especially poorly in handling the economy, communication, ability to compromise, foreign policy accomplishments and intelligence. Rounding out the bottom five are four presidents that have held that dubious distinction each time the survey has been conducted: Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren G Harding, and Franklin Pierce. To no one's surprise, FDR was ranked as the number one best president, followed by Teddy Roosevelt at number two (he's on the rise, it seems) and Abraham Lincoln and George Washington at three and four.Let's admit straight away that these sorts of polls, while fun, are silly and pointless, and that no real comparison can be made by politicians of different eras. With that out of the way, let me say that George Bush does not deserve this calumny – although he does deserve some criticism, as most US presidents do. But this just isn't fair or reasonable. For example, Richard Nixon is ranked 30th, while Bush junior is 39th. Now it seems plain to me at least that by resigning in disgrace, ahead of certain impeachment, as well as his foreign policy in Laos and Cambodia, Nixon should sit below GWB in any ranking. Both men had fairly disastrous economic policies, but Nixon's did far more damage to America, although I'd be open to arguments on that.

- US sends more soldiers on covert missions
Pentagon confirms expansion of undercover operations in Middle East, central Asia and Horn of AfricaThe US military is expanding covert operations in the Middle East, central Asia and the Horn of Africa, sending troops on undercover operations that were previously left mainly to the CIA and other civilian spy agencies.Pentagon officials confirmed today that General David Petraeus, the head of US Central Command, signed the order in September to broaden the scope of surveillance and other undercover work in these regions. It opens the way for clandestine operations more extensive than those approved under the Bush administration. There are few details in the order about specific operations, but US military teams have been variously reported to be active in Iran, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.Special operations teams will work, sometimes alongside local forces, to penetrate and disrupt groups such as al-Qaida and prepare for future attacks, possibly against Iran. The New York Times, which disclosed the existence of the new order, said it was aimed primarily at intelligence-gathering rather than the kind of offensive covert actions directed by Donald Rumsfeld while he was Bush's defence secretary.According to the Times, the focus of the intelligence-gathering is to identify militants and it would be carried out not only by American troops but by business workers, academics and others. This revelation will increase the already existing suspicion in some of these countries of people travelling for business or study. The order reflects the shift from traditional warfare between countries to combating groups such as al-Qaida. But it creates a potential hazard for troops, who would not be covered by the Geneva convention and would be treated as spies.

- Is reason always right? | Richard Harries
Reason is fallible: the mind is bound up with our whole being, including our feelings, upbringing and experiencesThe Liberal Democrats, it is said, were torn between heart and head. Their heart went out to Labour but their mind argued that it was best to go with the Conservatives. So they made a rational decision. But whom was it best for? The country, the party, civil liberties or what? Rationality cannot be seen apart from the context in which the mind is trying to be rational, together with a host of other considerations including any prior assumptions, and what it is to make a wise decision.A very senior public figure spent some years in one of our more prestigious universities. He was heard to remark, sotto voce, that never before had he come across an institution where it was impossible to have a rational conversation. What did he mean? As the people he was referring to were intellectual leaders in their field he obviously did not mean that that were stupid. Could he have meant that they seemed incapable of taking into account another point of view? That they started with a certain fixed outlook and used the whole force of their formidable intellectual power to crush the argument of their opponent without realising that the opponent was looking at the issue from a different but equally valid point of view?Albert Camus said that the body is as good a judge as the mind. We know what he means. When we meet someone for the first time the whole of us responds to that person. Later the mind may reflect on the encounter and think that they were likeable, or not, but that first meeting will be an important element in whether we want to follow up the relationship or not. Yet, though there is a great truth in what Camus said, I believe that in the end the mind must be the f _NULL_

- She must be a Lacanian, no? | Michael Tomasky
Okay, even though I largely forswore them, I never wholly forswore them, so here is this week's Christine O'Donnell post. It's kicking around the blogosphere today, e.g. see this by Greg Sargent, that she embellished her resume (c.v.) by claiming to have studied at the University of Oxford. It turns out that she took one class from an outfit called the Phoenix Institute, which merely rented space from Oxford. This is what the rest of the media are focusing on, but here at Tomasky blog, our interests are slightly different. It's the class she took that caught my eye: Post Modernism in the New Millennium.Say what? Post-modernism? Christine O'Donnell? What did she read, Judith Butler? I mean, this adds a whole new layer to that witchcraft business, doesn't it?I spend time (not much time, but time) wondering things like, how many members of the United States Congress know, for example, who Michel Foucault is? In that subset, how many could offer a vague, two-sentence summary of his work: he studied prisons, and he hated the power structure, something like that? It's not that I think you need to know these things in order to be an effective senator. Although I would say in fact that a glancing familiarity with certain philosophical matters probably can't hurt, but here admittedly I mean more political philosophy than, say, post-structuralism. Most politicians don't want to come within a million miles of that stuff, especially those on the right. But along comes our Christine, so resistant to category (isn't there a philosophy joke buried in there somewhere?), that I just bet if one walked up to her on the street and said Jacques Derrida, she'd say something halfway intelligible. Men in English departments across America would swoon.I suddenly find her more interesting It。。

- Why shouldn't spies live in suburbia?
Clearly, no one in the FBI has ever seen a David Lynch filmSo, this alleged Russian spy-ring thing? It can't be for real. Invisible ink? Handler-assignation in Peru? Nubile young Anna Chapman, with her smouldering portraits posted on Facebook? Taking snapshots of suburban streets from gliding cars, like Google Earth never happened? Getting huge bundles of cash for winkling out the obvious?Actually, that bit makes sense. The big journalistic angle on this odd story is that this intelligence-gathering was supposedly going on in ordinary US suburbs. How amazing! Well, amazing if you've never seen a David Lynch film. Or the news. In a world that continues to find it incomprehensible that weird shit might be happening even in the suburbs, the ongoing need for special intelligence is surely quite an obvious one.Russian 'spy ring'United StatesRussiaDeborah Orrguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Death penalty: Judicial killing in the free world | Editorial
Ending the practice in G8 countries such as Japan and the US would mark significant step towards global abolishmentIt is, by all accounts, an unremarkable room – but for the noose hanging from the ceiling and the trapdoor beneath. Yesterday, for the first time, the Japanese justice minister Keiko Chiba allowed the media into one of Japan's execution chambers. It is a small but important advance for a country that less than a year ago was accused of driving death-row inmates insane by refusing to reveal the day of their execution. Significantly, Chiba is a long-time abolitionist: her appointment, campaigners hoped, would mark the beginning of the end of capital punishment. Then last month she personally witnessed the hanging of two convicted murderers, a decision only partly mitigated in her critics' eyes by her simultaneous announcement of a review of the death penalty.Of course, Japan is not the only G8 country where judicial killing continues. Next month, in the United States, Teresa Lewis may become the first woman to be executed in Virginia since 1912. She is convicted of organising the murder of her husband and stepson, by offering herself and her daughter for sex, in order to cash in on life insurance. These are terrible crimes. But the courts have been told that Lewis, like many on death row, is of limited intelligence and was dependent on prescription drugs at the time of the killing. One of the men who carried out the killing, now dead, even confessed he had manipulated her in order to get the insurance money himself. It is a familiar pattern on death row, where mentally inadequate Americans are grossly overrepresented. The Guardian's investigations editor, David Leigh, will be online at 1pm today to answer questions about the Afghan war logsThe Guardian, along with the New York Times and the German weekly Der Spiegel, has today published a series of documents that give a detailed and often disturbing picture of the conflict in Afghanistan. These disclosures come from more than 90,000 records of incidents and intelligence reports about the conflict obtained by the whistleblowers' website Wikileaks, in what has been described as one of the biggest leaks in US military history. The three news organisations were given access to the Afghan war logs before publication to verify their authenticity and assess their significance. For the past few weeks, a team of investigative reporters, regional specialists and database experts has been working on the story. - Letter: Basil Davidson obituary
Michael Barratt Brown writes: I first met Basil Davidson (obituary, 10 July) in Cairo in 1943, and established a lifelong friendship with him and his wife Marion. Basil was head of the Yugoslav section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), and I was working for the Middle East Relief Administration, later the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.Basil was dropped into occupied Yugoslavia, and when he came out of the territory of Vojvodina in 1944, I invited him to speak to our group of relief workers, based in Italy and preparing to go into Yugoslavia as and when the Germans retreated. What this tall man in immaculate battle dress and enormous boots had to tell us was of great importance. The food and medical supplies we were to take to the starving areas of Bosnia and Croatia were desperately needed, but we should recognise that the local authorities established by the partisans would be perfectly capable of ensuring their distribution in the fairest possible manner. As a result of this talk, some of the Americans present, who had expected to be in charge of relief distribution, returned to the US.Long after the event, Basil told me of something he had organised before he went to Yugoslavia. This was the recruitment into SOE of a number of Canadian communist sympathisers who were of Yugoslav origin and spoke the languages. Basil was able to organise this because he met Vlado Dedijer, a partisan colonel, who had been evacuated to a British hospital, and had a brother, Stefan, living in the US.The British and Soviet intelligence services had an agreement to exchange information during the war, so Basil was able to find the names of Canadians of military age who were Communist party members. He communicated these to Stefan, who smuggled himself

- Ann Widdecombe is not cut out to be Vatican ambassador | Andrew Brown
Making Ann Widdecombe our woman at the Vatican would be a diplomatic disasterIf Ann Widdecombe is really a serious candidate as the next British ambassador to the Vatican, should we next expect the appointment of Melanie Phillips as ambassador to Washington? They are not as different as they may seem – both of them intelligent and energetic women, wildly out of step with majority British beliefs on the things they really care about, and neither known ever to express someone else's opinion. These are qualities that make for good columnists, but the role of a diplomat is a little different. The British ambassador to the Holy See is someone whose job is to understand and mutually interpret the attitudes of the Vatican and the British government and to broaden their mutual sympathy. I can't easily imagine Widdecombe expressing anyone else's opinions, yet that is one of the central skills of diplomacy. Purely as a piece of symbolism, there is something in this appointment to upset most people. For the Vatican, there is the fact of a woman who won't hesitate to tell them what to do; but she won't, when she does so, be representing any significant strand of British opinion. Since she left the Church of England in principled disagreement over women priests, she clearly represents a minority opinion among British Christians. Her contempt for Anglicanism doesn't really fit her to explain the religious landscape of this country. For secularists she is anyway anathema, rather like the post she is proposed to fill. Within the Catholic church, as a prominent straight single lay conservative, she forms part of a minority of, oh, about two. She is certainly not the candidate of the Bishops' conference, but she has also been attacked by the conservative Damian Thompson, who calls her th
- REF Smith obituary
Professor REF Smith, who has died aged 87, was the foremost British historian of medieval Russian agrarian society, and a linguist. These two interests resulted in more than 10 major books: on medieval Russian agriculture and peasantry; several translated works; and a Russian-English Social Science dictionary that went into two editions. He saw his task as a scholar to interpret – literally – from one culture to another. There was therefore a logic, although he was primarily a historian, to his appointment as professor of Russian at Birmingham University in 1967, although it ruffled feathers in a department firmly set in the study of high literature. However, his determination and leadership helped to make the department one of the leaders in the country, and it figured high in the dreaded Research Assessment Exercise.Bob came to Birmingham (where he spent all his academic life) in 1951, as a research fellow in the newly established department of Economics and Institutions of the USSR. This became the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, of which Bob was later deputy director.Bob was born in London and in common with many other young intellectuals he had been briefly attracted to the Communist party during the second world war. This may be one reason why he went as an undergraduate in Russian studies to the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, London University. But his interests were drawn to the medieval period. His postgraduate dissertation was published in 1959 as his first book, The Origins of Farming in Russia. This, and later works, won him an international reputation as an expert on the Russian peasantry. He probably regarded his Peasant Farming in Muscovy (1977) as his major work. His last monograph was Bread and Salt: A Social and Economic Hist
- Torture inquiry to investigate accusations against British agents
William Hague says coalition government will launch judicial inquiry into allegations against security servicesThe government is to announce a judicial inquiry into allegations of British complicity in torture by UK intelligence agents, the foreign secretary William Hague announced today. His commitment will be turned into a formal announcement in the next few days.He had advocated a judge-led inquiry into the allegations when in opposition and the Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman, Ed Davey, had pressed for the same move.Davey has been appointed to a major job in the business department, prompting some to suggest that the coalition government would go cold on the proposal. But Hague said he would be announcing the inquiry shortly, after the coalition government published a statement insisting it will not condone torture. It had also been expected that the intelligence agencies would lobby against such an inquiry, and it is not yet clear whether any or all the evidence will be taken in public. No announcement has been given yet on whether the inquiry report will be published, but it is thought that at the very least a summary will be made available. The inquiry will need to find a way of offering immunity to anyone who comes forward to give evidence. Although immunity deals are rarely granted to those who are complicit in torture, lawyers who advised Tory shadow ministers in the run-up to the election eventually came to the conclusion that it is possible. An immunity deal would be of clear benefit to the two MI5 and MI6 officers who are currently at the centre of a Scotland Yard investigation into their alleged criminal wrongdoing. An inquiry may also help to resolve the many civil cases being brought by victims of torture and rendition, and which the new government

- Michael Tomasky: Intellectual consistency can be overrated
When we write about libertarianism, most liberals feel compelled to say something like, you know, I disagree with that viewpoint, but I respect that it's principled and intellectually consistent.I say balderdookey. Libertarianism is kookoo. There can be no such thing as a basically stateless society (except for national defense and barest administration of law, I think are the exceptions they typically allow for). It's just ridiculous. Civil society would collapse without the state.I've written this before, a few months ago. Conservatives, and libertarians, seem to think that we have regulations in this society because we have a bunch of underemployed pencil pushers sitting around dreaming up ways to make small business people's lives miserable. It's ridiculous. We have regulations because throughout history people in various pursuits did really sleazy and unethical things. They swindled investors, they dumped toxins into bodies of water, they made children work long hours for slave wages. Et cetera. And so laws were passed and regulations were written. And unfortunately such is man's endless capacity for sleaze and unethicality that this process will never end: as technology presents new ways to be sleazy, we'll always need to invent new ways to prevent sleaze from happening.Yes, fine. Some regulations are onerous. Liberals should always be sensitive to legitimate concerns along these lines. But you need a state. Time and history have proven no one else will perform these tasks. So there's nothing in the least inellectually respectable about libertarianism. Intellectually consistent? Great. So was Goebbels. That doesn't mean much to me.We all support a few libertarian-ish principles; we all agree that the state should have some limits.
- South Korea on alert as tension grows over patrol boat sinking
South Korea's president expected to refer sinking of vessel to UN security councilSouth Korea and the US may raise their state of readiness against the military threat posed by North Korea to the second-highest level in response to the sinking of the patrol vessel Cheonan.Level one, the most serious condition of the five-level scale known as WatchCon, has not been in force since the end of the Korean war in 1953. Level two was last reached when North Korea conducted a nuclear test in 2009.The deliberations come as South Korea's president, Lee Myung-bak, is expected to refer the sinking in March of the Cheonan to the UN security council. The United Nations command, which signed the armistice ending the war on the south's behalf, yesterday launched its own investigation into whether the sinking of the South Korean ship, which led to the death of 46 sailors, violated the truce.South Korea's defence ministry is understood to have contacted its counterpart in Pyongyang to ask it to attend a meeting with the UN command to discuss the findings. These moves follow the publication on Thursday of a multinational investigation into the sinking which concluded that a North Korean submarine sank the ship. A motive for the attack remains unclear.A raising of the WatchCon level would trigger increased US-South Korean reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering efforts targeting the north. Also under consideration is an additional joint US-South Korean military exercise, perhaps as early as June, to signal to North Korea Washington's support for Seoul. The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, appears to be facing an uphill diplomatic struggle to win China's support for penalising North Korea over the sinking of the warship.China, North Korea's primary ally and financial supporter, has b

- Letters: Save this beacon of philosophical study
The decision to close the Middlesex University philosophy department has roused the indignation of the academic community across the world (Reason for being, Education, 18 May). Rated the highest of all Middlesex's departments in the Research Assessment Exercise, it is recognised internationally as a beacon of philosophical study. As publishers we have benefited in many ways from the skills of those teaching at the department, and from the lively atmosphere of debate engendered across the disciplines by its work. Consequently, we feel bound to speak up in its defence. The closing of this department would be disastrous for the academic and intellectual life of this country, and we urge that the decision to do so be reconsidered.Further, we wish to express grave concern at the suspension, on 21 May, of Professor Peter Hallward, Professor Peter Osborne and a number of Middlesex University students. We believe this to be an unwarranted and unjustifiable act of intimidation by the administration and board of governors of the university, and we call for the immediate reinstatement of suspended students and staff.Pete Ayrton Serpent's Tail, Julian Baggini Philosophy Press/The Philosophers' Magazine, Anne Beech Pluto Press, Nick Bellorini Earthscan, Ashley Biles Saqi Books, Tony Bruce Routledge, Michael Dwyer C Hurst & Co, Matthew Frost Manchester University Press, Tariq Goddard Zer0 Books, Emma Hutchinson Polity Books, Jessica Kingsley Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Michael Leaman Reaktion Books, Wendy Lochner Columbia University Press, Carol McDonald Edinburgh University Press, Tristan Palmer Acumen, Jenna Steventon IB Tauris, Rowan Wilson Verso, Caroline Wintersgill Bloomsbury AcademicPhilosophyProtestMiddlesex UniversityCuts and closuresStudentsLecturersHigher educationUnivers _NULL_
- Dubai 'identifies more suspects' in Hamas assassination
Latest suspects bring to 32 the total alleged to have been involved in killing of military commander Mahmoud alMabhouhDubai police have identified up to five more suspects in the alleged assassination of a senior Hamas official by Israeli secret agents, it was reported today.Abu Dhabi's National newspaper said at least one more false passport had been used by the hit squad in the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. The new suspects make a total of 32 who are alleged to have been involved in the operation, travelling on 13 British, as well as assorted Australian, Irish, French and German passports. The Dubai police chief, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, declined to comment on the report but he has blamed the assassination of the Hamas military leader in his hotel room on the Mossad, Israel's secret service.Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency concluded that a state intelligence agency was behind the passport theft and the Foreign Office then ordered the expulsion of a Mossad officer from the Israeli embassy in London. The UK has demanded a formal guarantee that its passports will not be abused in future.South African security officials confirmed yesterday that two of the suspected Mossad agents using false UK passports passed through Johannesburg's OR Tambo airport before and after the killing on 19 January. Israeli sources have described Mabhouh as the man in charge of smuggling Iranian-supplied rockets into the Gaza Strip. The Wall Street Journal has reported that one of the suspects in the Dubai investigation could be Israeli Zev Barkan, wanted in New Zealand since 2004 for passport fraud. Barkan has been sought for alleged involvement in a case in which two other Israelis were sentenced to six months' jail for attempting to fraudulently obtain a New Zealand passp
